The St. Lucie Shores Water en-US Quality Project opened in early April, and Martin en-US County officials say its going to provide a big en-US boost to thwart the effects of nitrogen and phosen-US -en-US phorous in the Indian River Lagoon and elseen-US-en-US where.en-US The project is one of more than 30 within the en-US county, and they are designed to treat stormwater en-US runoff before it enters the IRL and St. Lucie River en-US Estuary. It is located on the All American Ditch en-US Watershed near Mapp Road in Palm City and en-US St. Lucie Shores could reduce pollution about 40 en-US percent in the case of nitrogen and a 70-percent en-US reduction in phosphorous.en-US Also, it is located on what was one of the en-US most-polluted waterways on the Treasure Coast. en-US It took about two years to build from start to finen-US -en-US ish and came in at a total price tag of roughly en-US $5.2M. The treatment process takes about 54 en-US days.en-US The project serves a 268-acre watershed, and en-US the majority of the land was first platted in the en-US 1920s, said Greg Nolte, Martin Countys senior en-US project engineer for the Ecosystems Management en-US Division of the Public Works Department. en-US Mr. Nolte said when it was built, the goal was to en-USMartin County benefits en-US from water-quality project en-USCounty en-US shuts out en-US Harmony en-US Ranch en-USSTUART The Martin County en-US Commission shut the door April 24 on a en-US developers request to amend the Comen-US-en-US prehensive Growth Management Plan to en-US extend municipal water and sewer seren-US -en-US vices to a massive development proen-US -en-US posed near the intersection of Southeast en-US Bridge Road and Pratt Whitney Road.en-US The developer of the 2,600-acre Haren-US -en-US mony Ranch project, Thomas Kenny III, en-US wanted Martin County to ask the state en-US to approve an amendment to the Comen-US -en-US prehensive Plan extending both the Prien-US -en-US mary and Secondary Urban Service Disen-US -en-US tricts to incorporate the property in en-US order to provide county utilities to the en-US homes. The Local Planning Agency had en-US previously recommended denial of the en-US amendment March 14. Samantha Loveen-US -en-US lady, a principal planner with the en-US Growth Management Department, read en-US from a definition of urban sprawl incoren-US -en-US porated into the Comp Plan before also en-US recommending denial of the project. en-US The proposed expansion of the prien-US -en-US mary urban service district covers 788 en-US acres, and the proposed expansion of en-US the secondary urban service district en-US covers 1,111 acres, she said. Urban en-US sprawl is defined as a development paten-US -en-US tern requiring the extension of public en-US facilities and services in an inefficient en-US manner and failing to provide a clear en-US separation between urban and rural en-US uses. Although the Harmony Ranch en-US property is close to the Martin County en-US Utility Plant, the development pattern en-US proposed cannot be considered an effien-US -en-US cient expansion of public facilities.en-US Clyde Dulin, Martin Countys comen-US -en-US prehensive planning and site complien-US-en-US ance administrator, concurred with that en-US assessment. en-USEnjoying a cold drink en-USSeeen-US en-US WATERen-US, page 2 Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Lee en-USOn April 28, The Arbors subdivision located off Seabranch Blvd. in Hobe Sound en-US put on a family-friendly celebration commemorating Arbor Day and the subdien-US -en-US vision's 25th anniversary. en-US 3 en-USSTUART With any company, longevity en-US and quality are constant objectives. And en-US when it comes to providing style, comfort en-US and long-lasting products, its tough to beat en-US Verticals Plus. en-US Sue Sherwin has owned and operated en-US Verticals Plus for more than 29 years and en-US she has stayed active and successful by treaten-US-en-US ing her customers well. She maintains her en-US spot at the top of the heap by focusing on en-US their needs and desires and ensuring a range en-US of quality products that people use to dress en-US up their homes in a jiffy.en-US We do all sorts of window treatments en-US and we do free estimates when we come to en-US peoples homes and bring samples so people en-US can see what works best, Ms. Sherwin said. en-US Most blinds and window treatments can be en-US done in two weeks time from start to finish.en-US Many of her customers have been with en-US her for almost three decades and her client en-US list continues to grow up and down the en-US Treasure Coast. Verticals Plus covers an area en-US from St. Lucie West down to Hobe Sound en-US and much of her new business is derived en-US from word-of-mouth. en-US I always try and make sure the customer en-US is happy and try to stay on top of things to en-US make sure they get their products in a timeen-US -en-US ly fashion, Ms. Sherwin added. I stand en-US behind everything I sell.en-US The shops specialties include vertical en-US blinds, mini blinds, woven woods and wood en-US minis, pleated shades, arches, duettes and en-US interior shutters. Sherwin says vinyl shutters en-US are her best sellers because they block out en-US more heat and sunlight and are easy to wash. en-US In addition, they also are a quick way for en-US people to improve the curb-appeal of their en-US homes with a minimal cost. The company en-US provides impeccable service after the sale en-US and also performs repairs and replacements.en-US Its that customer-first attitude that en-US allows much of Ms. Sherwins business to en-US grow by word of mouth. Most of her cusen-US -en-US tomers come from recommendations, en-US although she tries to spread the word as best en-US she can in other ways.en-US I treat the customers as though theyre en-US my friends and we put out a good product, en-US Ms. Sherwin said. Everything is covered en-US under the manufacturer and theres always a en-US good warranty behind the blinds. We dont en-US sell products that are going to cause anyen-US -en-US body any problems and make sure everyen-US -en-US body is happy.en-US The company provides a 10 percent disen-US -en-US count to anybody who mentions this story, en-US but its the constant attention to low prices en-US and quality products that keep people comen-US -en-US ing back over and over again. Ms. Sherwin en-US makes all the vertical blinds, in-house, with en-US her son, Tim. Some of the products need to en-US be sent to a manufacturer, but they usually en-US receive them quickly. The manufacturer has en-US been working with Verticals Plus for about en-US 25 years and Ms. Sherwin has a solid relaen-US -en-US tionship with them. en-US There are examples of the full range of en-US products the company offers on the walls of en-US the store, and Ms. Sherwin has an easy-goen-US -en-US ing approach to satisfying the customer.en-US She says people buy their blinds for all en-US sorts of reasons, from style to function and en-US for energy savings or shade. There is a difen-US -en-US ferent blind for every purpose, she said, and en-US many people try and combine their needs en-US into one perfect solution that she is happy to en-US provide.en-US The business hasnt changed much over en-US the years, but the patterns and colors are en-US different now, Ms. Sherwin said. We have en-US a lot of the newest styles whenever they en-US become popular and sometimes things en-US come back in style.en-US Shutters are the most updated look you en-US can get because its like buying new furnien-US -en-US ture for your windows. Theyre very easy to en-US clean and maintain.en-US The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. en-US Monday through Friday. Evening appointen-US -en-US ments are available. Likewise, if a en-US woman self identifies as a man, she should en-US be allowed to use the mens restroom. Well, en-US if I self identify as a NASCAR driver, can I en-US drive 200 mph anywhere I want? If I self en-US identify as a cop, are the laws about imperen-US -en-US sonating a police office then void? It seems en-US to me that, what were once called deluen-US -en-US sions are now being passed off with a en-US straight face as self identification. Transen-US -en-US genders dont bother me. Transdead aka en-US zombies do.en-USSome adviceen-USA recent Can you help me plea asked on en-US how to deal with telephone solicitations. In en-US short why are you answering the phone? en-US The call back method is very effective. Callen-US-en-US er ID is helpful as it identifies friends, en-US important vendors/customers and relatives. en-US As for calls you dont recognize simply let en-US them go to voicemail. A phone with call en-US memory will allow recall of unknown numen-US -en-US bers. When I call back a solicitation usually en-US the following occurs: 1. the line is dead (no en-US answer); 2. the marketing company en-US announcement answers your call and asks if en-US you wish to be removed from their call list en-US (very handy); 3. a live person answers but en-US this is rare and they do not usually get call en-US backs and are off script. At my business we en-US keep a call log on a spreadsheet and this is a en-US great way to ID repeat solicitations (offenden-US -en-US ers). en-USMore help for robocallsen-USEveryone finds nuisance telephone calls en-US annoying. After I moved en-US here, I started buying solar lights to illumien-US -en-US nate my yard. However, my electric bill was en-US atrocious. en-US Suddenly it occurred to me to get solar en-US panels to circumvent the high cost of elecen-US -en-US tricy. I contacted a solar company and I was en-US amazed to find out that Florida is not giving en-US any kind of rebates to homeowners to install en-US solar energy panels.en-US The Internal Revenue Service gives 30 percent rebates, however, the state of en-USFlorida does not. I wrote to Gov. Rick Scott en-US with no response.en-US I found out many other states offer incenen-US-en-US tives for homeowners to install solar panels. en-US I wonder why the Sunshine State is not en-US offering good incentives for homeowners.en-US Energy is a precious commodity and if en-US our state would incentives then we'd have en-US surplus energy that could easily be sold to en-US other states.en-US I cannot comprehend why Florida is not en-US doing anything to use nature for our pleaen-US-en-US sure and pocketbook.en-USDont worry, its not your faulten-USThroughout society we have seen a steady en-US progression in the thinking that nobody is en-US required to take responsibility for their en-US actions. Todays buzz word is termed milen-US -en-US lennial thinking. This includes not only the en-US freedom to do anything you wish without en-US being burdened by repercussions as well as en-US it no longer requires hard work to achieve. en-US You are, after all, entitled to everything en-US you want in life. en-US Take the case of a person that goes to a en-US bar and has far too much to drink. They get en-US into their car and drive in a severely en-US impaired state and kill someone. The real en-US culprit certainly cannot be the poor person en-US that now has to live with this on their conen-US -en-US science. It is, instead, the bartender that en-US served him too many drinks.. en-US We saw the McDonalds fiasco with the en-US coffee which the lady spilled on herself. I en-US believe the award she received was over $80 en-US million. McDonalds then had to insert a en-US notation on their coffee cups that the conen-US -en-US tents were hot since the public cannot be en-US expected to know this without fair warning. en-US Sounds right to me.en-US In recent months we have seen a couple of en-US cases much closer to home. We have had en-US two incidents where people were struck and en-US killed by a Brightline train. These were ceren-US -en-US tainly tragic events and I extend my condoen-US -en-US lences to the friends and families of the vicen-US-en-US tims. However, the initial gut reaction en-US disseminated by many was to go after en-US Brightline. The very thought that Brightline en-US is to blame for individuals knowingly standen-US -en-US ing on the tracks or walking/bicycling in en-US front of a train is a classic example of how en-US far weve gone to make certain the truth, en-US common sense or simply what is right is no en-US longer the reaction of our societal mores. If en-US the gates are down across an intersection, en-US the crossing alarms are operating and the en-US train is blowing its air horn, I see no way en-US how we can deflect blame onto the train. en-US One cannot legislate stupidity. To be fair, it en-US is possible that the victims may have had en-US mental or physical situations which preventen-US-en-US ed them from realizing what they were en-US doing. If so, then how does the family allow en-US a loved one with said conditions to have the en-US freedom to put themselves into such situaen-US -en-US tions? Again, an offshoot of personal en-US responsibility.en-US This penchant towards PC extends to law en-US enforcement as well. Sometimes those that en-US are really wearing the handcuffs are not the en-US perpetrators but our law enforcement memen-US-en-US bers themselves. Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Lee en-USOn April 28, The Arbors subdivision located off Seabranch Blvd. in Hobe en-US Sound put on a celebration commemorating Arbor Day and the subdivien-US-en-US sion's 25th anniversary. A local manufacturing apprenen-US -en-US ticeship program, the first of its kind in en-US Florida, will allow 30 locals to learn a skilled en-US trade while earning a living.en-US The program is a dynamic, fast-track en-US comprehensive manufacturing apprenticeen-US-en-US ship program, a press release stated, and it en-US is a combination of paid on-the-job learning en-US and related classroom instruction that is en-US sponsored by the Treasure Coast Manufacen-US -en-US turers Association (TCMA) and funded by en-US CareerSource Research Coast through a en-US Sector Strategies Grant from CareerSource en-US Florida.en-US The 30 men and women will participate en-US in an 18-month, 3,000-hour earn-while en-US you-learn program, making at least $11 at en-US the start of the program and with wage en-US increases every six months and can earn en-US up to $18 per hour at the completion of the en-US program.en-US The majority of the training takes place en-US on the job itself, and the classroom is two en-US nights a week, said Marcelo Dossantos, vice en-US president of strategic development for en-US CareerSource Research Coast. The beauty en-US of it is that it can go across multiple indusen-US -en-US tries, so you can be a marine manufacturer, en-US aircraft manufacturer or a general manufacen-US -en-US turer and thats why we put it into this foren-US -en-US mat.en-US We have six participating employers now en-US and are looking for more, said Susan Hagen-US -en-US gard, sector strategy coordinator for Careeren-US -en-US Source Research Coast. They all seem preten-US-en-US ty excited about it, and they are just trying en-US to retain the skilled workers that they have en-US and some desperately need more because a en-US lot of these young adults will leave town en-US looking for work when there are great manen-US-en-US ufacturers here and they dont have to.en-US The apprentices will be selected by the en-US TCMA Apprenticeship Committee. This is an en-US unmatched opportunity for our manufacen-US-en-US turers and for the apprentices.en-US It also has the potential of offering not en-US just a job to candidates, but a career instead.en-US Not everybody goes to college, and thats en-US one thing weve struggling with, Mr. Dosen-US -en-US santos said. It doesnt make en-US any sense to most of us to encourage or en-US require septic tanks when you have a propen-US -en-US erty that can be --and should be -serviced en-US by central sewer and water. This is not a en-US project approval; this is a transmittal en-US approval. A transmittal does not vest any en-US right to a future approval.en-US His words also failed to sway the more en-US than three dozen members of the public en-US signed up to speak out against the proposen-US -en-US al. Jupiter Island Commissioner Peter en-US Conze warned those in attendance that en-US county residents could end up bearing the en-US cost of providing essential services to the en-US proposed subdivision. The land is currenten-US-en-US ly zoned for 20-acre ranchettes, but Mr. en-US Kenny proposed a mix of two-acre and en-US five-acre homesites, along with residential en-US estate density allowing two units per acre.en-US The proposed amendments would en-US establish a dangerous precedent and create en-US a domino effect by opening up land en-US between U.S. 1 and I-95, which now has en-US very low density, Mr. Conze said. Conseen-US -en-US quently the fiscal impact on Martin Counen-US-en-US ty taxpayers is potentially enormous.en-US Martin County resident Carly Batts en-US reminded commissioners that the county en-US had previously purchased adjacent lands to en-US set aside for the Indian River Lagoon South en-US segment of the Everglades restoration projen-US -en-US ect and asked them to carefully weigh their en-US decision.en-US By expanding the urban service bounden-US-en-US ary and changing the future land use on en-US these remaining parcels, we may not know en-US what effects it will have until its too late, en-US she said. As county commissioners, you en-US have the opportunity to protect the land, en-US not once, but twice.en-US Thomas Hawkins, the policy and planen-US -en-US ning director for 1000 Friends of Florida, en-US made the trek down from Tallahassee for en-US the meeting and lauded the efforts of counen-US -en-US ty staff to properly analyze the proposed en-US amendment, which he believed failed to en-US address key concerns. en-US It does not address issues like conserven-US-en-US ing open space, conserving agriculture, en-US conserving water or building a community en-US that incorporates non-residential uses so en-US folks can walk to nearby shops, he said. en-US Simply put, this application doesnt have en-US those kind of commitments to future high en-US quality development in Martin County that en-US you would want from a change thats as en-US substantial as this.en-US Unlike most controversial development en-US requests in Martin County, none of the en-US commissioners opined on the issue before en-US voting unanimously to deny the request. MARTIN COUNTY Pet pampering en-USwill be the order of the day at the Palm City en-US Animal Medical Center Dog Wash, which en-US will be hosted by Palm City Animal Medical en-US Center and the Humane Society of the Treaen-US-en-US sure Coast. The event will be on Saturday, en-US May 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the medical center, en-US located at 3090 S.W. en-US 12 TREASURE COAST If you pay atten en-US-en-US tion to gas prices, youve noticed them en-US creeping up all across the Treasure Coast. en-US From Sebastian to Stuart, gas prices are en-US higher than they were at this time last en-US month and last year.en-US According to GasBuddy.com, which proen-US-en-US vides crowd-sourced details on prices at en-US over 135,000 gas stations, gas prices have en-US reached their highest prices since at least en-US 2015. Just in April, prices surpassed recent en-US highs three times.en-US On April 12, GasBuddy reported a en-US national average of $2.68 per gallon for regen-US -en-US ular gas, which it said was the highest since en-US July 2015. By April 23, the average had risen en-US to $2.76. On April 29 it had shot up to en-US $2.808.en-US Gas price increases gripped 49 of the en-US nations 50 states again last week as oil prices en-US continued their upward move to new multi-en-US year highs, said Patrick DeHaan, head of en-US petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. In addien-US -en-US tion, government data highlighted a new en-US record for gasoline demand was breached en-US last week, and were not even into the sumen-US -en-US mer driving season yet. The road ahead at en-US the pump looks quite ominous if that en-US demand number proves common in the en-US coming weeks.en-US In Stuart, the lowest prices were $2.72 at en-US RaceTrac, 1755 NW Federal Hwy. and 16th en-US Place, $2.72 at Mobil, 5275 SE Federal Hwy. en-US near Salerno Road, $2.72 at Speedway, 3201 en-US SE Federal Hwy. and Indian St., $2.72 at en-US Speedway, 100 SW Monterey Road and S. en-US Kanner Hwy., and $2.72 at Shell, 5750 SE en-US Federal Hwy. and Cove Road.en-US In Vero Beach, the lowest prices for reguen-US -en-US lar gas as of April 29 were $2.59 at The Beven-US -en-US erage Stop, 310 27th Ave. SW, $2.64 at en-US 7-Eleven, 210 Highland Dr. SW & 2089 Old en-US Dixie Hwy. SW, $2.67 at RaceWay, 9490 en-US 108th Ave. and Fellsmere Road, $2.68 at en-US Sams Club, 5565 20th St., and $2.69 at en-US Mobil, 3365 Aviation Blvd.en-US In Sebastian, the lowest prices for regular en-US gas were $2.65 at Mobil, 9490 90th Ave. and en-US CR-512, $2.67 at BP, 10950 CR-512 and en-US I-95, $2.69 at Sunoco, 9020 Fellsmere Road en-US & Watervliet Ave., $2.69 at Cumberland en-US Farms, 957 Sebastian Blvd. and Barber St., en-US and $2.69 at Speedway, 700 US-1 & CR-512 en-US (eastbound).en-US In Fort Pierce, the lowest prices were en-US $2.64 at Mobil, 2200 S US-1 and Virginia en-US Ave., $2.64 at Speedway, 3045 S US-1 and en-US Emil Road, $2.65 at BP, 1203 South US-1 en-US near Park Way, $2.65 at Sunoco, 3110 S. en-US US-1 & Edwards Road, and $2.65 at Cheven-US-en-US ron, 511 S US-1 and Delaware Ave.en-US In Port St. Lucie, the lowest prices were en-US $2.61 at Sams Club, 1754 SW Gatlin Blvd., en-US $2.64 at 7-Eleven, 1650 SW St. Lucie West en-US Blvd. and California Blvd., $2.64 at Speeden-US -en-US way, 149 NW Bayshore Blvd. and Prima en-US Vista Blvd., $2.64 at Shell, 701 N. Airoso en-US Blvd. near St James Dr., and $2.64 at en-US Walmart, 902 SW St. Lucie W. Blvd. and en-US Wakulla River Trail.en-US Across all of Florida, the average on April en-US 29 was $2.719, compared to $2.629 one en-US month ago and $2.412 one year ago. The en-US lowest price reported in the state was $2.34 en-US at a Shell in Deerfield Beach. The highest en-US price in the state was $3.97 at a Chevron in en-US North Miami Beach.en-US Across the U.S., the average April 29 was en-US $2.808, compared to $2.658 one month ago en-US and $2.386 one year ago. The lowest average en-US prices in the U.S. are $2.491 in Oklahoma en-US and $2.496 in Louisiana. The highest averen-US -en-US age prices are $3.593 in California and en-US $3.564 in Hawaii.en-US All signs point to some additional en-US upward movement before prices peak and en-US perhaps drop slightly around Memorial Day en-US into the month of June, said Mr. DeHaan.en-US GasBuddy says the sudden surge can be en-US blamed on oil prices rising to nearly $67 per en-US barrel, the highest level since 2014, on fears en-US of military action in Syria and trade conflict en-US with China. U.S. oil inventories also stand en-US 20 percent lower than a year ago, the result en-US of higher crude oil exports and OPECs en-US agreement to cut oil production, now in its en-US 15th month.en-US Higher oil prices have enticed U.S. proen-US -en-US ducers to ramp up crude oil exports, effecen-US -en-US tively draining U.S. oil inventories at a highen-US-en-US er pace than that oil is being replaced, said en-US Mr. DeHaan.en-USFuel Saving Tipsen-USGasBuddy offers the following tips to save en-US fuel. These tips closely mirror those of AAA en-US and others.en-US 1. Avoid high speeds. Increasing speed en-US increases aerodynamic drag exponentially, en-US dramatically increasing fuel consumption.en-US 2. Avoid frequent accelerations and hard en-US breaking. Simply trying to maintain a conen-US -en-US sistent flow can increase fuel economy by 20 en-US percent.en-US 3. Keep tires properly inflated. One tire en-US underinflated by two PSI can increase fuel en-US consumption by one percent. Pay attention en-US to manufacturer recommendations for air en-US pressure and check them regularly.en-US 4. Use air conditioning as little as practien-US -en-US cal. The air conditioner can increase fuel en-USconsumption by 20 percent.en-US 5. Keep windows closed, but choose open en-US windows over A/C when you need one or en-US the other. Open windows at highway speeds en-US can increase fuel consumption by 10 peren-US -en-US cent. Thats 50 percent better than A/C, but en-US still a loss.en-US 6. Service vehicle regularly. Fuel efficienen-US-en-US cy gets worse if you have dirty air filters, old en-US spark plugs or low fluid levels.en-US 7. Use cruise control to maintain a conen-US -en-US stant speed. But avoid the temptation to en-US move your legs away from the peddles or en-US divert your gaze from the road, as you must en-US remain prepared to respond to any situaen-US -en-US tion.en-US 8. Avoid heavy loads. Those bags of kitty en-US litter or top soil or extra cases of water in the en-US trunk will cost you more in fuel than you en-US saved by buying them in bulk. Empty heavy en-US items from your car as soon as you can.en-US 9. Avoid long idles. Its often hard to anticen-US-en-US ipate how long youll be waiting for someen-US-en-US one outside a school or store, but the general en-US rule is that if you will be stopped in place for en-US more than one minute, youll save gas by en-US turning the car off and then restarting it.en-US 10. Purchase a fuel efficient vehicle. Peoen-US -en-US ple buy more vehicles when gas prices are en-US low, and then they ignore fuel and go for a en-US big truck or SUV. Think ahead and chose en-US the smallest vehicle that will suit your needs, en-US with the best rated fuel efficiency you can en-US afford. Choosing a manual transmission will en-US often save you extra money, though thats en-US not for everyone.en-US Finally, use a smartphone app to help you en-US find the least expensive gas wherever you en-US are. GasBuddy is a free and easy app, but en-US you can find others that work just as well.en-USWith gas prices rising, en-US some tips to save moneyen-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.com

en-US 17 en-USMARTIN COUNTY The Boys & Girls en-US Clubs of Martin Countys Palm City Club en-US serves more than 300 youths and teens en-US annually. Recently, the club director worked en-US with members of the Palm City Torch Club en-US a leadership service club for teens to en-US identify community needs and the ways in en-US which the club can help.en-US After visiting several local businesses, en-US speaking to their employees and managers en-US as well as talking to the local middle en-US school assistant principal it was discoven-US -en-US ered that many middle school-aged kids are en-US hanging out at local businesses after school en-US such as Annas Pizza, Starbucks and McDonen-US -en-US alds. Due to customer complaints, these en-US teens are regularly asked to leave. As a result, en-US they are starting to hang out in business en-US parking lots riding bikes and skateboards en-US putting themselves and others in a potenen-US -en-US tially dangerous situation.en-US For only $35 per year (a $2,500 value), the en-US MCBGC after-school enrichment program en-US provides youth in Palm City with a fun, safe, en-US and educational place to go after school and en-US during the summer. Annually, the Boys & en-US Girls Clubs of Martin County serves 3,000 en-US youth ages 6 to 18 in 5 clubs in Hobe Sound, en-US Indiantown, Palm City, Port Salerno and en-US Stuart. In addition, they operate two extenen-US -en-US sion sites in Jensen Beach High School and en-US Stuart Middle School. Daily, they transport en-US youths from school to the club, where they en-US are provided a snack and nutritious meal, as en-US well as high-quality programming in the en-US areas of academic success, good character en-US and citizenship and healthy lifestyles.en-US This year, the Palm City Club is re-invigoen-US-en-US rating its teen program in order to attract en-US and better meet the needs of the youth in en-US our community who need us most middle en-US school-age kids. These are the kids who are en-US hanging out in parking lots after school, en-US engaging in risky behaviors. In fact, the club en-US has an asset that most clubs in the county en-US lack a teen house that is intended to be en-US converted into a teen center so that they can en-US provide middle and high school kids with en-US fun, educational, and enriching activities en-US and programs like art, robotics, STEM (scien-US -en-US ence, technology, engineering, and math), en-US music, and tutoring. In addition, teens will en-US receive mentoring and programming in the en-US areas of academic success, good character en-US and citizenship and healthy lifestyles with a en-US focus on art and culture.en-US Currently, the Teen House a 900 sq. foot en-US building on our Palm City Club property is en-US vacant and in disrepair. In order make the en-US Teen House operational, funding is needed en-US so that staff can make the building a safe, en-US functional and inviting place for teens to go en-US after school. In addition, equipment and en-US supplies are needed so that there will be a en-US fun, educational and enriching after-school en-US experience for teens. en-US The vision for the Teen House is to create en-US a dance/drama/music studio in one room en-US which will serve multiple functions. With en-US hardwood floors, a mirrored wall, and ballet en-US bar, teens will be able to dance, play music en-US and perform skits, facilitated by youth en-US development professionals and community en-US volunteers. In addition, the Teen House will en-US feature a lounge with high-top tables, comen-US -en-US puters, and gaming chairs where youths can en-US participate in the art and culture programs en-US listed below, as well as hang out, study, comen-US -en-US plete homework, play video games, listen to en-US music and complete art projects. Art and en-US culture programming will include a mix of en-US the following BGCA programs: en-US Drama Matters is designed to promote en-US the club members love of drama, while en-US increasing their appreciation of this art en-US form, building self-confidence, inspiring en-US creativity and increasing academic achieveen-US -en-US ment. en-US Music Makers is a music education proen-US-en-US gram designed to promote young peoples en-US natural love of music and to increase their en-US appreciate for music; building skills so that en-US they can express themselves using musical en-US instruments, as well as developing critical en-US thinking, self-discipline, self-esteem, en-US self-confidence and teamwork. en-US The National Photography Program is en-US designed to help members go beyond snapen-US -en-US shots and develop skills to take photographs en-US that can truly impact the viewer. The goal, is en-US to enable youth to develop their creativity en-US and cultural awareness through the apprecien-US-en-US ation of photography. The program provides en-US teens the opportunity to express themselves en-US creatively, build confidence, learn new skills en-US and showcase the artwork of club members en-US to the community. en-US My.Future engages youth in productive en-US after school activities, developing important en-US 21st Century skills. Supported by Comcast en-US NBCUniversal, My.Future has a powerful en-US digital presence. It is a safe, fun, en-US mobile-friendly social platform with access en-US to over 100 BGCA program activities in en-US areas like STEM (Science, Technology, en-US Engineering and Math), leadership and en-US visual arts including programs like:Lyrien-US -en-US cism 101 (hip-hop, musical collaboration, en-US and performance) and Media Making (phoen-US -en-US tography, audio production, video produc en-US-en-US tion, and design).en-US The goal is to raise $6,000. This will cover en-US rehabilitation on the Teen House so that it is en-US aesthetically attractive, safe and functional. en-US In addition, they will be able to purchase en-US needed equipment and supplies including en-US computers, tables/chairs, photography/viden-US -en-US eography equipment and software, art supen-US -en-US plies, drama accessories, instruments/music en-US equipment, games, shelving, tablets, speaken-US-en-US ers, couches, gaming chairs and a television. en-US 18 en-USFen-USor a few years now the PGA of en-US America has had the For Sale sign en-US out at St. Lucie Trail Golf Club, in St. en-US Lucie West. The organization purchased the en-US club more than two decades ago when it en-US opened the PGA Village just on the other en-US side of I-95.en-US When it first opened in the late 1980s the en-US course was the jewel of St. Lucie County. en-US Over the years it has gone through every en-US step of being cared for from neglect to en-US pampering. One thing the course never lost en-US was its variety. The course remains a lot of en-US fun to play with a solid mix of holes that en-US challenge you to hit every club in your bag.en-US The new owner is CGI St. Lucie, the same en-US group that owns The Evergreen Club in en-US Palm City. Having played Evergreen and en-US witnessed the great conditions that course is en-US always in, I am quite excited for St. Lucie en-US Trail. Apparently the community is as well, en-US with over 100 new members joining just in en-US the few weeks since the course sold.en-US Were excited to be here, said General en-US Manager, Matt Boyd. We love the layout en-US and the design. We will do everything we en-US can to promote golf here.en-US The new owners plan to address some of en-US the drainage issues the course experiences en-US when those summer thunderstorms move en-US through. They are also listening to the en-US community to see what the members and en-US customers want.en-US If the course was paid a little more en-US attention (by the previous owner), everyone en-US would have been thrilled, said Boyd. We en-US are giving it that attention.en-US A benefit of purchasing the course at this en-US time of year is that business tends to be a en-US little slow. This gives the new owners a en-US chance to address the issues and get the en-US course primed and ready for season.en-US One thing the membership was missing en-US was the country club atmosphere. The club en-US has a beautiful clubhouse that wasnt being en-US used to its potential. The dining room saw en-US over 200 people show up for a dinner en-US shortly after the purchase. The pool and en-US tennis courts were also included in the en-US purchase and the green clay courts may be en-US the best-kept secret in the area. However, en-US CGI purchased the club because it loves the en-US golf course.en-US The course has five sets of tees and plays en-US anywhere from just over 5,000 yards long to en-US just over 6,900. The par-4 third hole, at 458 en-US yards from the tips, may just be the longest en-US par-4 in the area. en-USKaryn en-US Kolchin, of en-US Vero en-US Beach, en-US visited en-US Disneyland en-US in Califoren-US -en-US nia last en-US month. en-US Thanks for en-US taking us en-US along! en-USAre you a fan of the Hometown News? en-US 19 en-USIn the 2013 the PGA of America en-US renovated the club. Dick Gray was brought en-US in to focus on getting the course up to its en-US tough standards. The focus was on the en-US playable areas. Getting the course cleaned en-US up and looking good from tee to green was en-US first and foremost. It took a while, but the en-US greens were rebuilt and re-grassed. With a en-US few years of growth in them now, they are en-US about perfect.en-US One recent trend in course renovation is en-US where the areas around the perimeter of en-US the holes are cleaned up and thinned out. en-US Not having thick clumps of palmettos to en-US gobble up slightly errant shots serves a trio en-US of purposes. First, it speeds up play and, en-US second, it makes for a less frustrating en-US round for the average golfer. Thirdly, it en-US creates more airflow across the fairways en-US and greens and allows the course to en-US breathe.en-US If you played en-US here years ago, you en-US will surely en-US remember the en-US palmettos that en-US gobbled up almost en-US every wayward en-US shot. Most of these en-US are gone or en-US well-trimmed. en-US Fairways are en-US wider, and the en-US greens a bit larger. en-US The tall grasses in en-US the wetlands have en-US been cut to a en-US proper height. en-US Now to see what other improvements en-US CGI makes over the coming months. I en-US have a feeling this club is back and ready en-US to re-take its place as a jewel on the en-US Treasure Coast.en-US For more information on the club, en-US memberships and tee times, visit en-US www.en-US stlucietrail.com en-US or call the pro shop at (772) en-US 340-1444.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at en-USwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US emailen-US earl@estoyota.com.en-USSen-UServicing your car might be just as scary en-US as it was buying it. However, buying a en-US car is something you only do every few en-US years. During the time between buying cars en-US you will bring it in for service maybe a en-US dozen times (and that doesnt even count en-US repairs).en-USCar dealers make more money servicing en-US your car than they do selling you one. The en-US more service they sell you, the more money en-US they make. Todays automobiles are of far en-US better quality than they used to be and are en-US much less likely to need repairs. Increasingly, en-US basic maintenance is all you really need to en-US do for your car. Also, many manufacturers en-US are providing free maintenance for the first en-US two or three years. This new dynamic is a en-US threat to the car dealers most profitable en-US departmentsservice and parts. Many car en-US dealers are compensating for this by selling en-US you more service than you really need.en-US Did you know that virtually every employen-US -en-US ee in a service department gets a percentage en-US of the total amount of service he sells? The en-US guy that writes up your service order when en-US you drive in is on commission. They are en-US service salesmen but they dont like to be en-US called that. Their title is usually service en-US advisor or assistant service manager. The en-US mechanic that fixes your car is on commisen-US -en-US sion. The service manager that supervises en-US the mechanic and the service salesman is en-US paid on commission. The dealer and service en-US manager expect the service salesman to en-US up-sell you. This is typically accomplished en-US with a free inspection purportedly to find en-US maintenance and repairs that you didnt en-US know you needed and was probably not en-US mentioned in your owners manual. After en-US the service salesman sells you as much en-US service as he can, the mechanics role is to en-US find anything that needs to be fixed on the en-US car that the service salesman or you were en-US unaware of. He then calls the service en-US salesman and tells him about the additional en-US repairs you need the second up-sell. I en-US recommend that you stick to what your cars en-US manufacturer recommends for maintenance en-US in your owners manual. When your service en-US salesman tells you what he recommends, be en-US sure that the manufacturer recommends it en-US too. There are some exceptions to this, based en-US on certain local environmental conditions, en-US but very few. Always question any service en-US not recommended by your owners manual. en-US When a repair is recommended that you en-US were unaware of, get a second opinion from en-US another service department, especially if its en-US an expensive repair. Be especially leery of en-US transmission and radiator flushes. Theyre en-US not recommended by auto manufacturers en-US but very popular with car dealer service en-US departments; their high-priced and en-US unnecessary.en-USNow, dont get me wrong; just because en-US people are paid on commission doesnt en-US make them dishonest or uncaring. However, en-US if theres a rotten apple in the barrel he will en-US take advantage of a commissioned pay plan en-US to maximize his earnings. There are very en-US few companies with zero rotten apples. A en-US good company does its best to ferret out the en-US rotten apples but its a constant battle. In en-US fact, there are companies that have more en-US rotten apples than not. When you have a en-US department or company where everybody is en-US on commission, it takes an awfully altruistic en-US manager to fire a top-producerbecause his en-US paycheck enhanced by that individual. The en-US more his rotten apple sells the more en-US money the supervisor earns. This applies en-US also to the supervisors supervisor, all the en-US way up to the guy that owns the company. en-US The higher up the ladder you go, the harder en-US it is to identify these more passive, unseen en-US rotten apples that aid and abet the en-US front-line apples. The head guy usually has en-US what many CEOs insist onDENIABILIen-US -en-US TY. You hear a lot about that in government en-US scandals. The press always wants to know, en-US Who knew what and when did they know en-US it? Everybody remembers Watergate where en-US the rotten apples extended from the bottom en-US of the barrel all the way to the top. It took en-US Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein over en-US several years to follow the tracks all the way en-US to the top of the barrel.en-US Often, there are people in all companies en-US that are honest and caring for their customen-US -en-US ers. The point of this article is that youre en-US better served to look for that good person en-US than only a good company. There is no en-US surefire way to do this, but I can suggest a en-US few methods. Clearly, youre more likely to en-US find a good service salesman in a company en-US that has a good reputation. You find good en-US companies by personal experience, en-US recommendations by friends, and ratings by en-US various services like Google (most reliable), en-US Yelp, Dealer Rater, and BBB. If you read the en-US reviews, often the individuals are menen-US -en-US tioned. If youve dealt with this company en-US before, others in that company, like the en-US salesman sold you the car, can refer you to a en-US particularly good service salesman. All en-US manufacturers measure the customer en-US satisfaction index of every service salesman. en-US Insist on seeing these scores and find out en-US how the service salesman ranks among his en-USpeers, both in the company and the entire en-US region. Finally, always make an appointment en-US to see that service salesman youve chosen. en-US If hes on vacation or not available for other en-US reasons, wait for your service until he can en-US see you.en-US Finally, when you find yourself a good en-US apple for a service advisor, dont keep it a en-US secret. Tell your friends and tell the service en-US manager and the owner of the dealership. en-US When you do this, youre doing your en-US friends, the service advisor, the service manen-US -en-US ager, and the owner a great favor. Youre also en-US spreading the word that treating customers en-US with honesty and compassion is good for en-US business. ON CARS en-USEARL STEWART
