The en-US department has a myriad set of responsibilities, en-US which involve being in city and rural areas and en-US even on the countys waterways.en-US Martin County is the best-kept secret in the en-US State of Florida, so dont let it out, said Chief Wilen-US -en-US liam Schobel with a laugh. The diversity of chalen-US-en-US lenges in Martin County is second-to-none if you en-US look around the state because we literally have the en-US full gamut of risk here for a fire rescue agency.en-US Not many fire rescue agencies have 911 comen-US-en-US munications, ocean rescue, emergency manageen-US-en-US ment, fire prevention, fire emergency medical en-US services, en-US fleet services en-US all under one en-US roof, and so en-US that to me is en-US special in en-US and of itself.en-US Chief en-US Schobel has en-US been a fireen-US -en-US fighter since en-US 1984 and en-US with MCFR en-US since 2010 en-US after coming en-US over from the city of Seminole in Pinellas County. en-US He said the Treasure Coast was once a vacation en-US spot for he and his family, and visited the area as a en-USNew fire chief touts en-US team effort for success en-USWater en-US District en-US approves en-US buying en-US land for en-US reservoir en-USWEST PALM BEACH -With its en-US long-term goal in mind of constructing en-US a 14,000-acre water storage facility south en-US of Lake Okeechobee, the South Florida en-US Water Management District agreed earen-US -en-US lier this month to pay the Seventh Day en-US Baptist Church Memorial Fund $5 milen-US-en-US lion for 490 acres just west of the A-2 en-US parcel slated for the same project. en-US The SFWMD Governing Board had en-US previously approved a much smaller en-US purchase of 10 acres adjacent to the A-2 en-US parcel to continue cobbling together en-US land to build the 10,100-acre Everglades en-US Agricultural Area Storage Reservoir en-US capable of storing 78 billion gallons of en-US water spilling out of Lake Okeechobee en-US before it heads south to the Everglades. en-US Plans for the project also include a en-US 6,500-acre stormwater treatment area to en-US aid in the filtration of the water.en-US Board Member Dan OKeefe attributen-US-en-US ed at least part of the success to the en-US efforts of Florida Gov. en-US 3 en-USchild. Ive always been an east-coaster at en-US heart, so when the opportunity came availen-US-en-US able I put in for it. I knew it was going to be en-US very competitive to be the training chief en-US here, because its a great department and en-US attracts a lot of quality folks from around en-US the region.en-US Among the challenges are that the area is en-US obviously a coastal community and the coven-US -en-US erage of an airport, railways, highways and en-US the interstate system along with the wildlife en-US urban interface that includes western Maren-US -en-US tin County. MCFR just last week had to baten-US-en-US tle a fire in Jensen Beach near Ballantrae, en-US and even that short distance west contained en-US significant fire danger because of recent dry en-US conditions before trecent rains.en-US Firefighters will come down from up en-US north and beat on their chest on how great en-US they are because they do one thing really en-US well, and I say, Well, Im kind of fond of my en-US folks because they do everything really well, en-US Chief Schobel said. Its literally mind-bogen-US -en-US gling to realize that these folks can be going en-US to two structure fires, a bad accident on the en-US Turnpike and multiple medical calls to a en-US brush fire later on and they dont know en-US whats coming in next, but they handle it en-US all.en-US The inter-agency cooperation among that en-US diverse range of responsibilities is key, Chief en-US Schobel said, because these public-safety en-US partners like City of Stuart Fire/Police en-US Department, Jupiter Island, Martin County en-US Sheriffs Office, the US Coast Guard, Florien-US -en-US da Forestry Service and Wildlife Commisen-US-en-US sion and Sewalls Point Police Department en-US combine to ensure the safety of all the citien-US -en-US zens. But it doesnt matter whether its engien-US -en-US neering, the health department, the library en-US system or the parks system, Chief Schobel en-US said they all work together, and the utilities en-US department recently came forward with a en-US 7,000 tank for watering and retrofitted it en-US with fire-department threads to help assist en-US with dry areas when they present a danger. en-US Also, the MCSO is outfitting a new boat en-US called Guardian 1 with a water cannon to en-US fight boat fires on the waterways.en-US Its amazing, because its always people en-US looking out for each other in the communien-US -en-US ty, and what I call it is community lenses, en-US because all of us live and work here and we en-US want to make it safe and make it great every en-US day, Chief Schobel said. We also partner en-US with the Martin County Sheriffs Office on en-US heavy water weekends like Memorial Day en-US and July 4th, when we will have people on en-US each of the vessels and were working togethen-US -en-US er to create a SWAT/medic program. en-US These days, people are less territorial en-US and realize that in order to do the best for en-US the community we have to work together.en-US For more information about Martin en-US County Fire Rescue, please visit https://en-US www.martin.fl.us/government/departen-US -en-US ments/fire-rescue-department or call 772-en-US 288-5400.en-USCommunity notes Committed to Our Customers & Our Community We Work For You!!Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8:30am-5:00pm772.600.80206181 SE Federal Hwy. en-US 4 en-USCelebrate Earth Day 2018en-USWen-USith all of the things that have en-US been evolving with our earth, en-US Earth Day is becoming more and en-US more of an important event in our society. en-US Earth day is a day we can look around and en-US see all the wonders that nature has en-US bestowed on us. It is also a great time to en-US think about how we can protect and en-US beautify our environment. This task can be en-US as simple as planting a single tree to en-US beautify our yard or possibly planting a en-US colorful garden for all to enjoy on your en-US property or even to donate your time to a en-US local garden club to help beautify an area of en-US your city or town. With the growing needs en-US of our fragile environment, now more then en-US ever, 2013 will be an important year to do en-US everything we can to both beautify and en-US balance our environment. en-US The idea of Earth Day was initiated in en-US 1962 as a way to get people aware of what is en-US going on in our environment. It started en-US with President Kennedy in 1963 when he en-US took a five-day conservation tour of our en-US nation. The first official Earth Day was on en-US April 22, 1970. Since then, Earth Day has en-US blossomed into a national celebration en-US where people initiate ideas that can help en-US make our environment more eye appealing en-US and a better place to live.en-US With all the hype on how we are en-US depleting our cypress forests by the use of en-US cypress mulch, there are many other natural en-US alternatives we can use that are both en-US functional and also will save our natural en-US resources. One thing we can use that we all en-US have plenty of is natural grass clippings. en-US Thats right; grass clippings can make an en-US excellent mulching material that you can en-US use on almost all your plants and flowers. en-US You do need to be sure, however, that your en-US turf has not been recently treated with any en-US herbicides. The herbicides may damage en-US some of your tender plants. Place the en-US clippings around your plants in layers. en-US Make each of your layers thin and do not en-US make it too thick, as the mulch will produce en-US a smell. Apply the next thin layer after the en-US initial layer has been allowed to dry out. As en-US the clippings decompose, they will produce en-US a fertilizing effect on your plants. The en-US clippings tend to add nutrients back to the en-US soil as they decay and work their way into en-US the dirt. Remember, every time you buy a en-US bag of mulch, trees had to be cut down to en-US produce it!en-US Another great natural mulching material en-US is pine needles. This material is not suitable en-US for all plants, but is great for the majority of en-US plants we use in this part of Florida. You en-US can use pine clippings on any plants that are en-US acid loving. This list can include ixoria, en-US hibiscus, bottlebrush, azalea, gardenia, en-US junipers, and banana trees along with many en-US other plants that require a high acid content en-US in the soil. Not only do many of these en-US natural remedies save resources, they also en-US save you money. Doing large areas of your en-US yard with commercial products can cost a en-US fortune. With the money you save on en-US mulching materials, you will be able to en-US purchase lots more colorful flowers!en-US Many of your favorite plants that you en-US have in your yard can be easily propagated en-US into new plants without the need to keep en-US buying new plants. Roses are a great en-US example of this. In the spring, you can en-US choose cuttings that are healthy and green en-US and they will make good candidates for en-US cuttings. Using a sharp knife cut off the soft en-US tip of the cane and then cut it into 4to en-US 5-inch pieces. Each piece should have at en-US least two nodes and some leaves. Strip off en-US the bottom leaves to expose a node, and en-US then plant the cutting in moist soil and en-US keep it in bright shade and high humidity. en-US You can use containers covered with plastic en-US bags, or set them in the ground in the shade en-US and cover them with plastic jugs. Either en-US method should work fine. Take several en-US cuttings to be sure you have success with at en-US least several. You are now on your way to en-US propagating your own Rose garden!en-US Remember, earth day is April 22, 2018.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. Send en-US e-mails toen-US hometowngarden@gmail.com en-USor en-US visit his websiteen-US www.hometowngarden.en-US com. GARDEN NOOK en-USJOE ZELENAK en-USyear, which identified these particular lands en-US as crucial to the EAA Reservoir project. The en-US District itself attributed the successful negoen-US-en-US tiation of the land purchase to the assistance en-US of The Nature Conservancy in Florida in an en-US April 12 press release. Nature Conservancy en-US Executive Director Temperince Morgan en-US said the organization has always supported en-US the purchase of the lands identified in Senen-US -en-US ate Bill 10.en-US We are thrilled the Board has approved en-US the purchase of this critical property for en-US inclusion in the reservoir project, she said. en-US The Nature Conservancy has had a long-en-US term commitment to the restoration of the en-US Everglades, including assisting with land en-US acquisition in the Everglades Agricultural en-US Area.en-US The EAA Reservoir is slated to store en-US 240,000 acre-feet of water on the 10,100-en-US acre site comprised of the A-2 parcel and en-US lands immediately to the west. Through the en-US use of the reservoir and man-made marsh, en-US the District predicts sending approximately en-US 370,000 additional acre-feet of clean water en-US annually southward to the Everglades to en-US benefit the fragile ecosystem. Officials also en-US believe the project will reduce the number en-US of damaging discharge events from Lake en-US Okeechobee to the northern estuaries of the en-US St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee rivers by 63 en-US percent when used in conjunction with en-US other projects.en-US Martin County Commissioner Ed Fielden-US -en-US ing, who also serves on the Indian River en-US Lagoon National Estuary Program Council, en-US said April 15 he didnt have enough inforen-US -en-US mation to make an official comment on en-US how the latest purchase might aid in preen-US-en-US venting the plagues of algae blooms from en-US Lake Okeechobee that have led to beach cloen-US-en-US sures in Martin County in recent years. The en-US county does have its own water farming en-US projects sanctioned by the state to help clean en-US up stormwater runoff into the Estuary, en-US including the 3,275-acre Caulkins Water en-US Farm inaugurated last October after a smallen-US -en-US er, successful pilot project on the land along en-US the banks of the C-44 Canal off of Citrus en-US Boulevard. Orchestrated in cooperation en-US with the South Florida Water Management en-US District, the Florida Department of Envien-US-en-US ronmental Protection, the Florida Departen-US -en-US ment of Agriculture and Consumer Services en-US and Florida Senate President Joe Negron, en-US Caulkins Water Farm now has a 10-year, en-US $62.5 million contract to filtrate water en-US through its extremely porous soil. Experts en-US predict Caulkins Water Farm will filter en-US approximately 26 billion gallons of water a en-US year and effectively prevent up to 37,500 en-US pounds of phosphorus and 271,000 pounds en-US of nitrogen from entering the St. Lucie River en-US Estuary. Sen. Negron believes the Martin en-US County operation will play an essential role en-US in the cleanup of Lake Okeechobee disen-US-en-US charges. en-US This successful project demonstrates en-US that Florida can achieve short-term soluen-US -en-US tions to reduce discharges while at the same en-US time building the long-term water storage en-US infrastructure to solve the problem once en-US and for all, he said. en-USReservoiren-USFrom page 1en-GB pancake after party. After staying at one last en-US week, I have to say they are interesting. Did en-US you know that its preferable to put the bathen-US -en-US room light switches outside the bathroom in en-US the master bedroom? Just in case you need en-US to use the facilities in the middle of the en-US night, you also get to wake your spouse so en-US she knows where you are at all times. en-US Usually the hard water will cause the en-US shower-head to point in various directions, en-US unfortunately none of them downward in en-US your direction. They also make sure you en-US know about their amenities when you turn en-US on the TV. All their sets start on their chanen-US-en-US nel, which has a volume setting twice the en-US level of what the other channels need to en-US use. I learned to turn the volume down to en-US five before I shut off the set when I was done en-US watching sports, it needs to be at twenty five en-US to actually hear the announcers, otherwise if en-US my spouse turned it on in the morning she en-US would be blasted out of bed, not a pretty en-US sight, Ive learned from past experience. I en-US just want to share these couple tips if you en-US plan on staying at a local resort in the near en-US future. Gotta Love Floridaen-USCan you help me?en-USHELP: Can anyone tell me how to stop en-US the incessant phone calls from robo calls? en-US My phone rings all day long. Is there any way to stop en-US these. I cant even block these numbers en-US because its always a different number and en-US from all over the country. I am on the No en-US Call registry, but that doesnt seem to do any en-US good.en-USHow do you stop all these en-US mailings looking for money?en-USI received 49 last month. They fill up the en-US wastebasket very quick. Now, I am getting en-US some from people I have never heard of. My en-US husband also gets the same mailings, so add en-US that up. We do give to several of these, but at en-US my choosing, not theirs. Again, they fill up en-US the garbage can very quickly. Any ideas how en-US to stop this? Traveling across en-US Western Europe England, Portugal, Spain, en-US France, Italy we saw drivers who were not en-US only courteous, but knew the rules of the en-US road and obeyed them and traffic laws.en-US Almost without exception, I cannot drive en-US on a 55-mph road without being passed by en-US car after car doing at least 70-mph, or better. en-US My wife was almost killed nine years ago by en-US an aggressive driver whose speed was estien-US -en-US mated to have been 100-110 mph before he en-US rear-ended and totaled her car. He weaved en-US in behind her but couldnt pass because of a en-US dump truck in the other lane. People, slow en-US down obey speed limits and other traffic en-US laws before you injure or kill someone.en-US As a side note, our county and city comen-US -en-US missioners seem to want to raise taxes to en-US boost income. I have an idea: ENFORCE en-US TRAFFIC LAWS, and the fines will be more en-US than adequate for all the pet projects. en-USSpreading her knowledge

The horse is out en-US of the barn and they want me to give them en-US advice on how to get it back. Most of these en-US car buyers went car shopping and bought en-US their car alone. Most of the complaints en-US involve verbal promises by the sales person, en-US not committed to writing. Bringing at least en-US one other person when youre car shopping en-US doesnt negate the importance of getting all en-US promises in writing, but substantially en-US lowers the chances of a car salesman trying en-US to pull a fast one. The salesman and his en-US manager know that, in court, two peoples en-US word trumps that of one.en-US A woman wrote me a letter in response en-US to one of my columns. Her husband had en-US recently passed away and this was the first en-US car she had bought on her own. The dealer en-US did not have the model car with the en-US accessories she wanted and was unable to en-US locate one at another dealership. She did en-US not want to decide without seeing the en-US actual car she wanted to buy but the en-US salesman and manger talked her into en-US signing a buyers order, assuring her that en-US she was under no obligation to buy. They en-US also included two accessories that she did en-US not want because they said that the en-US manufacturer required it. Ive heard of en-US distributors ordering cars with certain en-US accessories from the manufacturer which en-US essentially makes them standard, but en-US never $250 floor mats which was one of en-US the accessories she mentioned. I get a lot of en-US emails, phone calls, and letters from people en-US who made a bad deal in their car purchase en-US and want to know how they can get out of en-US it. This is one of the less egregious, but I en-US chose it because it was a simpler and en-US shorter example.en-US There is strength in numbers when en-US shopping and negotiating to buy a car. In en-US fact, this applies to any serious decision in en-US life. You might be the sharpest, shrewdest en-US negotiator on the block, but your odds of en-US striking a better deal and not get taken en-US advantage of are enhanced when you have en-US others on your side. Personally, I make a en-US habit of always having at least one partner en-US when I am engaged in a serious, adversarial en-US decision-making process. When meeting en-US with those on the other side, I make it a en-US point to arrive with at least as many people en-US as they have present. One reason is the en-US psychological factor. When you are in an en-US office by yourself with two or three others, en-US it can be intimidating. Another reason is No Dealer FeesDealer fees average about $1,000 in South Florida. US Hwy 1, Port St. Lucie TREASURE COAST A program started en-USby a pair of Florida women is helping to preen-US -en-US vent drownings. The Baby Otter Swim en-US School is a state-wide teaching plan that en-US helps children as young as 8-months-old en-US learn how to save themselves in the event en-US they fall into a pool or body of water and is en-US designed to make Florida a no-drownen-US-en-US ing-state, according to creators Marlene en-US Bloom and Mindy York.en-US They said the tragedy is that drowning en-US deaths in Florida are far too common in the en-US Sunshine State, which holds the moniker as en-US Drowning Capitol of the U.S. Their take en-US on the subject is that the drowning deaths en-US are usually a completely preventable occuren-US -en-US rence.en-US While they may have a long way to go, en-US Ms. Bloom, 71, and Ms. York, 62, earlier this en-US month signed on vacation destination giant, en-US Club Med in Port St. Lucie, to help further en-US their mission. Best of all, Club Med has en-US opened its Sandpiper Bay Resort to local en-US area residents, who can now have their en-US youngest of children learn to swim in just en-US five, 30-minute private lessons.en-US It is designed to ensure that even the en-US youngest of children are safe in the water, en-US and the Baby Otter Swim School is now celen-US-en-US ebrating 40 years in business and may possien-US-en-US bly be the worlds fastest learn-to-swim and en-US water survival program.en-US Also, new franchises are popping up en-US every day, and on the website are instrucen-US-en-US tions on how nearly anybody can join in the en-US effort and help save lives. Licensing and en-US training take only a few weeks and then en-US people can earn money while teaching en-US young children to save themselves. Ms. York en-US added one story that involved a young boy en-US who ended up in a pool while attending a en-US backyard gathering with his parents. The en-US child had previously gone through the proen-US-en-US gram and fell into the water unbeknownst en-US to anybody there and eventually came en-US inside the house soaking wet, and the paren-US -en-US ents quickly realized that he had made his en-US way out of the pool due to the training he en-US received from Baby Otter.en-US In the pursuit of establishing Florida as a en-US Zero-Drowning State, Club Med has starten-US -en-US ed using Baby Otter-licensed instructors en-US and its proprietary Turn, Kick, Reach sysen-US -en-US tem at its lone Florida property Sandpipen-US-en-US er Bay resort in Port St. Lucie. en-US Ms. Bloom is an elementary school teachen-US -en-US er who founded the company 40 years ago en-US after being unable to find someone to teach en-US her 18-month daughter because she was en-US too young, while Ms. York, joined Ms. en-US Bloom 10 years later after finding her own en-US 18-month old daughter at the bottom of her en-US backyard pool and performing CPR to save en-US her life. Thirty years later, Ms. Yorks daughen-US -en-US ter is one of the companys top instructors.en-US I called the Red Cross and the YMCA, en-US and she wasnt 3 years old yet, so they said en-US there were no programs for her, Ms. Bloom en-US said. So I spent the summer experimenting en-US with my friends children, and came up with en-US this five-day Turn, Kick Reach program, en-US which saves lives now instead of taking en-US months for a child to learn how to swim.en-US I realized that Marlene was really onto en-US something, and as an educator she realized en-US that lesson plans that work in a classroom en-US would work as well in the pool, Ms. York en-US said. So, what sets us apart from others is en-US that we are program-based and not lesen-US -en-US son-plan based children can learn to en-US swim to the steps, to the wall and if they fall en-US into the water they can turn around and get en-US out.en-US The company ambassador is baseball Hall en-US of Fame outfielder Andre The Hawk Dawen-US-en-US son, 62, who is now a Miami resident who en-US utilized Ms. Bloom and Ms. Yorks program en-US to learn how to swim at the age of 49.en-US For more information about the Baby en-US Otter Swim School, please visiten-US https://babyen-US -en-US otterswimschool.com/.en-USBaby Otter swim program prevents drownings By Gaylon Parker en-USgparker@hometownnewsol.comen-USMarlene Bloom & Mindy Yorken-USCalendaren-USFrom page 4en-US Seeen-US en-US CALENDARen-US, page 10

Every call is a different en-US challenge and most of the time it can take a en-US half hour or more just looking around en-US trying to get a handle on whats going on en-US before the actual repairs even start. en-US Virus and malware cleanup calls usually en-US always involve running one or more scans en-US to sweep the computer for infected files en-US and these scans can really run up the clock. en-US There is nothing more frustrating than en-US having to wait for a scan to complete and en-US watching as the progress bar inches its way en-US across the screen. The temptation to do en-US other things while a scan is running is high en-US but doing other things while a scan is en-US running on an already sick machine can en-US just make matters worse. Its best to tackle en-US additional tasks after an infection is en-US cleaned. en-US Lets face it, computer maintenance is en-US expensive. At the typical hourly rate one en-US unexpected glitch like a virus infection or en-US registry problem can quickly add up to en-US hundreds of dollars. And whos to say that en-US next month it wont be something different?en-US And to add insult to injury, most of en-US theissues that I regularly clean up wouldnt en-US be an issue if people would just take the en-US time to keep their machines properly en-US maintained. But what steps should people en-US take? en-US Everyoneknows that they should have en-US their system backed up and their antivirus en-US up to date but hardly anyone takes the time en-US to learn how to do it properly let alone do it en-US every month! en-US Most computer manufacturers assume en-US that everyone already knows what they en-US need to do to keep their new machine en-US maintained properly but that can be an en-US unreasonable assumption to make especialen-US -en-US ly if the new computer owner has little or en-US no experience. And with computers as en-US inexpensive as they are today more and en-US more people who have never used one en-US before are coming home with powerful en-US systems that can confound even the most en-US seasoned computer user. Without proper en-US maintenance its only a matter of time en-US before something goes wrong and the repair en-US bill can approach the price of a new en-US machine! en-US Theres got to be a better way.en-US en-US Wouldnt it be smarter to have an expert set en-US up your machine and then maintain it every en-US month and avoid costly repairs that could en-US have been avoided with regular mainteen-US -en-US nance? Doesnt it make sense to have en-US someone who knows what theyre doing en-US keep regular tabs on things and nip en-US problems in the bud rather than letting en-US them grow to the point where an expensive en-US service call is inevitable?en-US Well, I think it is and Ive spent some en-US time putting together a program that does en-US just that gives regular computer users a en-US way to keep their machines maintained on en-US a regular basis at a cost that wont break the en-US bank. en-US What Ive put together here a computer en-US service club if you will is a way to offset en-US the high cost of sudden repairs by performen-US -en-US ing regular monthly check-ups to make en-US sure things are running smoothly. This way en-US we can stop little issues before theybecome en-US big ones.en-US We want to start out with a clean system en-US so when a person joins our club, we en-US connect to their system and do a full tune en-US up and get it running in tip top shape. Even en-US if its infected with viruses or malware, well en-US clean it first. Well even set up the backup en-US system and make sure its configured en-US properly. en-US Then, once a month we reconnect and en-US give the system a once over. We encourage en-US people to use this time to ask any questions en-US that they have and well address any issues en-US that may have come up over the previous en-US month. Well verify the system, the en-US antivirus, the backup and the security en-US settings. And we make sure they are all set en-US for the next month. In between monthly en-US check ups, help is just a phone call away. en-US Its been more than 5 years since I started en-US the monthly remote support club and all en-US of my club members seem pretty satisfied en-US so far. We have also been able to nip a few en-US problems in the bud before turning into big en-US issues; just the way I planned. en-US If this sounds like something you would en-US like to take part in, drop me a line or give en-US me a call. en-US 12 en-USthat you always have people on your side to en-US corroborate what was said. If a salesman or en-US a sales manager makes a verbal promise en-US that can be corroborated by a friend or two, en-US it is far less likely to be broken. It will also en-US hold up in court, if it must come to that. Of en-US course, the better solution is to see that all en-US promises are committed to writing.en-US Buying a car, especially a new car, is more en-US often than not, an emotional decision. en-US Having a friend or two with you can help en-US you make more of an analytical, logical en-US decision. Another point of view is always en-US useful when making an important decision. en-US Also, having one or two friends with you en-US slows down the process to a level more en-US easily absorbed and understood by you. A en-US friend will often think of a question you en-US should have asked but forgot.en-US Ideally you should bring someone with en-US you who is skilled in negotiation and en-US experienced in buying cars. However, if you en-US dont know someone like that, somebody is en-US better than nobody.en-US Please understand that asking a friends, en-US family member, or associates to join you in en-US the purchasing of a car is not a sign of en-US weakness; on the contrary, its a sign of en-US intelligence and a sign of understanding en-US how to stack the deck in your favor in a en-US negotiation.en-US By the way, most car dealers are unhappy en-US when prospective customers bring in en-US advisors and friends. Licensed since 1982 Serve hot food hot and cold food cold en-USBen-USeing a chef can be like the character en-US from the TV series Monk, who had en-US outstanding powers of observation he en-US called a blessing and a curse.en-US Being a chef, I have been trained in the en-US culinary arts, which I take seriously. That en-US has been a blessing for me.en-US Hot food should be served hot and cold en-US food served cold is an important part of en-US that training and that is where the curse en-US comes in. My family does not understand en-US that simple action. en-US People everywhere that love to cook will en-US tell you they get their satisfaction from en-US cooking and watching others enjoy their en-US labors. Unfortunately, in creating a great en-US hot meal and then serving it cold, there is en-US no satisfaction. That is the curse for a chef en-US a great meal gone bad. en-US My wife came from a large family and hot en-US food probably wasnt high on the list at en-US dinner, because just trying to get everyone en-US fed was the goal. Serving food at the proper en-US temperature for a chef is a rule that cannot en-US be broken. It goes against all of my training en-US and drives me totally bonkers. en-US Let me give you a few examples. Its time en-US to eat and I announce dinner is ready, then en-US everyone disappears. People are going to en-US the bathroom, going out to get the mail, en-US answering the phone. It's dinner time!en-US So now I announce dinner 5 minutes en-US early to give everyone a chance to prepare en-US to eat. When I make salad, which is usually en-US every day, I keep it in the refrigerator just en-US prior to eating and not letting it sit on the en-US table for 10 minutes. I also keep the salad en-US dressing refrigerated as well. I have the en-US oven on low to keep food warm, and I place en-US the serving plate in the oven also on very en-US low just prior to eating. Hot food hot en-US plate, its not that hard. en-US Here are a few tips when serving en-US pancakes or French toast. Heat the syrup or en-US honey in the microwave for a few seconds. en-US Next time you make steak or chops and en-US want steak sauce, heat it up in the microen-US -en-US wave for a few seconds. en-US If you have a ceiling fan in the dining en-US area, turn it off. It will cool off food quicker. en-US Serve hot food hot, cold food cold and this en-US will make everyone happy, especially me.en-USSWEET POTATO SOUP en-USServes 4-6 (serve hot)en-US Ingredientsen-US 1-1/2 pounds baked sweet potatoes,en-US peeled or (3-3/4 cups canned sweet en-US potatoes)en-US 2 tablespoons butteren-US 1 cup red onions, choppeden-US 2 cups celery, choppeden-US 2 teaspoons ground gingeren-US 5 cups chicken stocken-US 1 cup half and half creamen-US 1 teaspoon white ground pepperen-US 1 tablespoon honey en-US Directionsen-US Heat the butter in a six-quart pot and en-US cook over medium heat. en-US 19 en-USMen-USany year-round Florida golfers en-US take the winter off. Between en-US crowded tee sheets and higher en-US prices, many choose to let their games en-US hibernate. By now, some of you are dusting en-US off your clubs in anticipation of that first en-US round since late last year. If you plan to play en-US your best golf this spring and summer, its en-US important that your equipment is up to the en-US task.en-US You need to take a good look at your en-US clubs. Examine the heads, grips and shafts. en-US Most importantly, make sure that they are en-US as ready to play as you.en-US Start with your grips. Grips are probably en-US the most overlooked part of a club. Since en-US the grip is the only place that you actually en-US contact the club, your grips must be in good en-US shape for you to maintain control and hit en-US good shots.en-US If your grips are simply dirty, wash them. en-US Its a good idea to wash your grips every en-US couple of weeks in soap and water. Between en-US the dirt and oil on your hands, and the dirt en-US and dust that settle into your golf bag, youd en-US be surprised how much crud you need to en-US remove.en-US Have you ever watched the pro caddies as en-US they hand a club to or take a club from their en-US player? They almost always wipe the grip en-US off with a towel. Players want a dry and en-US clean grip for every shot. Many have their en-US grip s replaced every month or so on Tour. en-US Of course, they get all this done by the club en-US or grip companies that they have contracts en-US with, but it does give you an idea how en-US important your grips truly are. en-US If your grips are hard or show wear in en-US spots from where you hold the club, then en-US its time for replacements. When you en-US replace your grips, take a look at your hand en-US size in relationship to the grip size. Properly en-US sized grips are an easy change to make and en-US one that will make you a more consistent en-US player. en-US Larger grips take your wrists out of your en-US swing and may help you if youre hitting an en-US ugly hook. Smaller grips will help to en-US promote a release and may help get rid of a en-US push or fade. Think about making sure that en-US all of your grips, except for your putter, are en-US the same. This is one way to allow your en-US hands to have the same feel with every club en-US in the bag. en-US The shafts are next. Check for rust. en-US Surface rust can be removed with WD-40 en-US or a No. 2 pencil. If the rust returns, its en-US time to replace the shaft before it fails. A en-US more serious shaft problem would be a en-US dent, ding or bend in a steel shaft. These en-US make the shaft weak and inconsistent, and en-US it should be replaced to avoid having it fail en-US during a swing.en-US With graphite shafts en-US check to make sure en-US that the shafts arent en-US wearing where they en-US touch the top of your en-US golf bag. Over time, en-US many graphite shafts en-US will have a worn patch en-US from rubbing against en-US the bag. A good en-US solution to this is using en-US covers that protect that en-US area or a bag designed en-US to protect graphite en-US shafts.en-US How do the en-US clubheads look? Clean out the grooves with en-US a brush and some soap and water. The en-US buildup of dirt in the grooves prevents the en-US club from imparting the proper spin on the en-US ball. A ball with little or no spin acts like a en-US knuckle ball in the air and doesnt penetrate en-US the wind or fly very far.en-US I am surprised at some of the clubs that I en-US see when I play. Ive seen wedges with so en-US much dirt in the grooves that its no wonder en-US they cannot stop a shot or put spin on the en-US ball.en-US Lastly, check the loft and lie. Clubs can en-US get out of alignment through normal play. en-US A properly lofted set will not have any en-US distance gaps. en-US A club that sits too flat will cause the toe en-US to dig in, opening the clubface giving you a en-US slice or fade. A club that sits too upright en-US will allow the heel to dig in, closing the en-US clubface, producing a hook.en-US If youre not sure how to check all of en-US these items yourself, call your local shop. en-US Most shops charge a small fee to adjust your en-US clubs, and many will check them for free en-US when replacing your grips.en-US This weekend take some time to check en-US your clubs and get them ready for the en-US season. Who knows, maybe your swing isnt en-US what needs to be fixed.en-US James Stammer has been an avid golfer en-US and golf enthusiast for nearly 40 years.
