en-US 2 en-USnow.en-US The event was developed by Chrystal Lucas, who was a en-US teacher for the Martin County School District, but it was en-US handed off to the ESC this year. The K-12 student film festien-US -en-US val will be the first event of its kind in Martin County, and en-US the mission of Youth Driven Cinema is to educate and en-US engage youths in Martin County by fostering community en-US involvement in the arts and sciences. Tickets are available en-US ahead of time at the Lyric Box Office and the night of the en-US event, but seating is limited.en-US The theme of the evening will be Spread the Word, Florien-US -en-US das Ecosystems Need Our Help, and the program asked en-US students to find ways they can positively impact the envien-US -en-US ronment. The film crews are comprised of up to four stuen-US -en-US dents within the same grade level category, and there is a en-US category for videos by larger groups or classrooms called en-US School of Fish. The top-five short films from each category en-US will be presented at the film festival, and prizes will be en-US awarded in four categories, including School of Fish, eleen-US -en-US mentary, middle and high school.en-US The Environmental Studies Council has a group called en-US the Earth Savers, and the great thing is that theyre able to en-US help us with the event and they pick the theme, Mr. Mott en-US said. Its kind of a broad topic, but it allows the students to en-US go ahead and pick something within Martin County or en-US Floridas ecosystem and talk about why there may be an en-US issue or how we can make it better.en-US Mr. Mott added that the event is a fantastic learning en-US opportunity for the students, because it combines art, eduen-US -en-US cation and environmental conservation, and gives them the en-US ability to express, in their own words and be very creative, en-US how they can send an environmentally positive message to en-US both their peers and local community.en-US For more information about the event, please see the en-US website at www.youthdrivencinema.com or call 772-219-en-US 1887 ext. 101. en-US 3 en-USEarl Stewart is the owner and general en-US manager of Earl Stewart Toyota in North en-US Palm Beach. The dealership is located at en-US 1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park. en-US Contact him at en-USwww.earlstewarttoyota.com, en-US call 561-358-1474, fax 561-658-0746 or en-US emailen-US earl@estoyota.com.en-USAen-USs many of you know, I communicate en-US directly with my customers. Some en-US would say to a fault. I dont have a en-US secretary or administrative assistant. My en-US dealerships telephone receptionist never en-US asks the caller whos calling or may I ask en-US the nature of your call? and she puts my en-US calls (and the calls to all my employees) en-US right through. If I am not in my office, she en-US puts them through automatically to my cell en-US phone seven days a week. I also have five en-US red phones in five locations of my dealeren-US -en-US shipthe showroom floor by the receptionen-US-en-US ist, the service customer waiting lounge, en-US outdoors in the service drive, the used car en-US department and in the body shop waiting en-US lounge. Each phone has a picture of me en-US with the message, Customer Hotline to en-US Earl Stewart. The Buck Stops Here. Have en-US We Not Exceeded Your Expectations? en-US Please Let Me Know. Simply Pick Up the en-US Receiver and Wait For Me To Answer. As if en-US all this wasnt enough, I put my personal en-US cell phone number on my business cards en-US and pass them out to my new customers at en-US our bimonthly New Owners Dinner.en-US I say all this, not to brag (or maybe just a en-US little). It might surprise you that I am not en-US deluged with phone calls. I get quite a few, en-US but considering I sell 400-500 cars a month en-US and service thousands of cars each month, I en-US doubt if I average more than 25 calls per en-US day. Most of them are positive, complien-US -en-US mentary calls. I believe one reason for this en-US is that my employees are motivated to work en-US harder to satisfy my customers because they en-US know, if they dont, Im going to hear about en-US it very quickly. Another reason is that my en-US customers are remarkably respectful of the en-US fact that they can call me and do not take en-US advantage of it. When you extend your trust en-US to people, they almost always respect that en-US and do not take advantage.en-US Of course, you are not going to find a lot en-US of car dealers who do what I do. But here is en-US how you can improve your communications en-US in other ways that will allow you to get en-US problems solved and promises kept. Always en-US ask for the business card of every person en-US you deal with. If they dont have a card, be en-US sure to get their name. This improves your en-US service right away because the person is no en-US longer anonymous. Ask the person for his en-US cell phone number. There was a time when en-US it was considered wrong to call someone on en-US his cell phone, but that was before cell en-US phone rates became so cheap and the cell en-US phone became universal. If this is a critical en-US person you are dealing with, ask for his en-US home telephone number too. Here is a little en-US trick that I use when I do this. I always start en-US out by giving them my cell phone and my en-US home phone number. Then I say, and may en-US I have yours? I cant remember ever having en-US been refused. If someone you are doing en-US business with refuses to give you his cell en-US phone number, maybe you should wonder en-US why.en-US Also, make it a point to be introduced to en-US this persons manager. Get the managers en-US business card and as many contact numbers en-US as he is willing to share with you. When you en-US do this, you have put the salesman or en-US service advisor on notice that if he doesnt en-US return your phone calls you will be calling en-US his boss. If you really want to have an edge, en-US ask to meet the general manager and/or en-US owner of the dealership. Get his telephone en-US numbers. Now you will have everybodys en-US attention when you come into the dealeren-US -en-US ship to transact business. Also, when you en-US have their cell phone number, you can also en-US text them which is less invasive than a en-US phone call.en-US If you are a computer person, collect en-US email addresses from everybody you deal en-US with. Email is not as timely as a telephone, en-US but it has the advantage over the telephone en-US because it is on the record. When you en-US make a request of a person by email, he en-US cant deny it because you have a copy of the en-US message. I know that with Microsoft en-US Outlook email, I get an acknowledgment en-US every time somebody opens an email that I No Dealer FeesDealer fees average about $1,000 in South Florida. I chose to have en-US Hospice care for him at home. Well, these en-US people are just wonderful. Everyone of en-US them. They were so caring. You could tell en-US that they loved their jobs. They also care en-US deeply for the caregiver and offer assistance. en-US Toward the end, they gave him round-the-en-US clock care, sitting by his bedside. It brings en-US tears to my eyes just remembering what en-US wonderful care they gave him. Thank you en-US Hospice. I know there is a spot in Heaven en-US waiting for you. God Bless You.en-USMore about guns in schoolsen-USAs a retired educator, I would like to en-US respond to the recent misinformed post en-US regarding this subject. This writer, like so en-US many have fallen to the exaggerated hyperen-US -en-US bole, perpetuated by the ideological media en-US and politically driven.en-US The proposal insists nothing about ranen-US-en-US domly bringing guns to schools as insinuaten-US -en-US ed in the post.It would be a voluntary sysen-US -en-US tem only to be awarded to those individuals en-US who have completed an extensive backen-US -en-US ground check (which was the norm just to en-US teach during my career).Once that has been en-US verified, an individual would be required to en-US complete a 140 hour training period prior to en-US entry into the school.Im confident that this en-US training would require weapon security and en-US implementation in the face of any cataen-US-en-US strophic event.en-US During my teaching career, I have know en-US responsible colleagues who owned conen-US -en-US cealed weapons permits. I would trust them en-US implicitly if this proposal was initiated in en-US my school district. In our school, however, it en-US would not be necessary as the School en-US Resource Officer, an active county sheriff en-US who was admired by all, would not have en-US behaved in the same manner as the video of en-US the SRO in the Florida shooting indicated.en-US I am not an NRA member but I do supen-US -en-US port common sense approaches to problem en-US solving and feel individuals should underen-US -en-US stand details of resolutions before rushing to en-US ill informed, emotional conclusions.en-USCompliments to en-US the draft houseen-USMy compliments to the St. Lucie Draft en-US House for hosting monthly breakfast meeten-US-en-US ings of Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers.. en-US Crime Stopper is an international program en-US designed to stop, solve and prevent crime in en-US partnership with law enforcement, the en-US media and the public. Loyal local law en-US enforcement personnel and Citizens On en-US Patrol & other volunteers work diligently to en-US protect our homes and persons along the en-US Treasure Coast each day. By hosting the en-US monthly breakfast meeting, St. Lucie Draft en-US House supports this worthwhile program en-US and demonstrates a dedication to social en-US responsibility in our communities. en-USWhats with the tiny white flies?en-USOur community seems infested with tiny en-US white flies, out lanai screens are peppered en-US with them daily, both front and back. We en-US live next to a small lake, not sure it its conen-US-en-US tributing to our infestation? I called the en-US Indian River Extension office for help, but en-US does anyone know of a solution to get rid of en-US them or is this just a pest problem we need en-US to live with for a short time? We live in en-US Sebastian and I see them all over when I en-US walk the little blond terror. Im curious if en-US others see them too?en-USWe need to do betteren-USFlorida barely made a C average with en-US An opinion editorial by former Judge en-US Ashley Moody, candidate for Florida en-US Attorney General en-USFen-USlorida has always drawn seniors with en-US its warm weather and white sandy en-US beaches. And, unfortunately, where en-US seniors go, fraudsters follow to steal their en-US hard-earned retirement savings. As a en-US former federal prosecutor and having en-US served over a decade as a circuit judge, I en-US know as threats evolve, we must evolve en-US with them to protect seniors across en-US Florida. en-US Increasingly, we have seen that the en-US fraudsters no longer need to be here to en-US prey on seniors. Fraudsters can now be en-US sitting across the country or even across en-US the world and make themselves look like en-US they are calling from a government agency en-US or a specific area code. In the last five en-US years, law enforcement has seen a en-US proliferation of scams directed at seniors en-US that are all too often successful. The en-US scams run the gamut of threatening arrest en-US or government action if money is not en-US immediately wired to promising winen-US -en-US nings, jackpots, or refunds if a senior en-US provides personal or financial informaen-US -en-US tion, or prepays en-US taxes or fees. One en-US example, en-US fraudsters posing en-US as IRS workers en-USdemanding tax en-US payments that are en-US not and were not en-US due have victimen-US -en-US ized 12,716 en-US victims who have en-US collectively paid en-US over $63 million en-US to fraudsters since October 2013. Such en-US scams can be easily avoided with vigien-US -en-US lance. en-US First, if what is being offered sounds too en-US good to be true, it likely is. Never give en-US personal or financial information over the en-US telephone to someone you do not know. If en-US a caller asks you for that information, it is en-US a scam. en-US Second, always use common sense en-US when dealing with someone that you do en-US not know. Stop and verify the information en-US before you send or wire money to anyone. en-US Call the government agency, a family en-US member, or someone you trust first. Do Photo courtesy of MaryAnn Ketcham en-USDuring the Easter Eggstravaganza at the Children's Museum of en-US the Treasure Coast, on Saturday, March 31, twin sisters Kailey and en-US Hailey Sherber of Stuart get ready to imprint tiles with their handen-US-en-US prints that will adorn the front of the Childrens Museum.en-USProtecting seniorsen-USSeeen-US en-US SENIORSen-US page 7 Moody en-USSeeen-US en-US RANTSen-US, page 7en-USDouble the fun!

en-US 7 en-USnot simply call back the number provided en-US by the caller. Look in the phone book or en-US online for the number to call. If the caller en-US tries to prevent you or dissuade you from en-US verifying what he has told you, it is a scam. en-US Third, government agencies will not en-US contact you by telephone first and they will en-US not threaten to bring in the police, other en-US law enforcement, or otherwise arrest you. en-US And, the government will send you en-US something in writing first demanding en-US payment before reaching out to you. If the en-US government has not written you or the en-US caller threatens you, it is a scam. en-US Fourth, if the caller says you can only pay en-US a certain way, and that way seems odd, it is en-US a scam. Fraudsters often ask their victims en-US to wire money, put money on a gift card, en-US load money onto a cash reload card, or en-US otherwise require a specific payment en-US method, other than a check. They will en-US claim it is urgent and try to justify the en-US specific method. Do not fall for it. en-US Fifth, never pre-pay taxes, transfer fees, en-US or other expenses in exchange for a en-US promised jackpot, sweepstakes win, or en-US refund. Legitimate organizations do not en-US and will not ask for prepayments. If a en-US prepayment is required, it is a scam. en-US Almost as important as avoiding being en-US scammed, is to report any attempted scam en-US immediately. You can file a complaint with en-US the Florida Attorney Generals Office online en-US atwww.myfloridalegal.comor by phone at en-US 1-866-9-NO-SCAM. en-US If I am elected Attorney General, I will en-US work tirelessly to put these fraudsters out of en-US business and protect our seniors. 2.50% APY 60 MONTHS Member FDIC www.OculinaBank.com Annual Percentage Yield rate is effective as of February 28, 2018 and subject to change without notice. When she was examined by a veterinarian en-US here at HSTC, the vet found that she had incredibly poor dental health in en-US addition to being emaciated. Poor Ginger had a lot of dental work done, en-US has put on some weight, and is now ready to be adopted! Ginger enjoys en-US leash walks around the building and is currently living in our cat feature en-US room with a handful of feline friends. She is very social and affectionate en-US with people. en-US 8 ing the applicants density at several meet en-US-en-US ings and he is well aware of our concerns, en-US she said. However, rather than working en-US with residents of adjoining communities, en-US the applicants revisions have in fact made en-US the impacts on our community worse. A en-US dead-end road for accessing the ALF [assisten-US -en-US ed living facility] was added 65 feet from en-US our homesites where originally there was a en-US retention pond. Every delivery and service en-US truck going in has to make a U-turn and en-US come out the same way, doubling the disturen-US -en-US bance to our residents.en-US Mariner Village resident Patricia Restaino en-US worried that developers were inundating the en-US region with such residential care homes en-US whose older residents could end up overen-US -en-US whelming the emergency room at Martin en-US Memorial South. en-US In my opinion, the area is saturated with en-US assisted living facilities, she said. Theres a en-US huge one being built south of us a half-a-en-US mile away next to a housing development. en-US Theres another big one being built two en-US miles away on Cove Road. My concern is en-US that these assisted living facilities are satuen-US -en-US rating the area with elderly folks who are en-US relying on a 25-year-old small hospital for en-US medical assistance and attention, as well as a en-US very limited emergency room. This concenen-US-en-US tration of elderly to a very, very small area en-US jeopardizes not only the current residents, en-US but these elderly people as well.en-US Morris Crady, a Stuart-based landscape en-US architect and representative of the Mariner en-US Village Square developer, disputed Ms. en-US Dadarios accusations and claimed he had en-US met several times with neighborhood resien-US -en-US dents to get their input and suggestions on en-US the project.en-US We originally had a contract and were en-US working on a neighborhood grocery store in en-US this phase, he said. After meeting with the en-US residents of Mariner Village we met with en-US them twice, and we also invited them to the en-US county workshops one of their concerns en-US was with the grocery store and the loading en-US noise. When we came up with the assisted en-US living facility, we came up with a different en-US loading zone. en-US Mr. Crady emphasized that, out of all the en-US general commercial uses permitted on the en-US 20-acre site, a residential care facility and en-US mini storage facility would be the least en-US intrusive. Even so, he said he has incorpoen-US -en-US rated several changes into the plan since the en-US Feb. 15 LPA meeting, including the eliminaen-US -en-US tion of outdoor storage of recreational vehien-US -en-US cles and boats typical of mini-storage facilien-US-en-US ties. en-US We listened to the comments from the en-US LPA members and we listened to the comen-US -en-US ments from the public, he explained. To en-US address their concerns, we also have the en-US 40-foot buffer and a 25-foot buffer, along en-US with a six-foot wall. Along that wall, were en-US putting in 14-foot oak trees. In my opinion, en-US this [residential care] building will not be en-US able to be seen behind these residences.en-US Commission Chairman Ed Ciampi asked en-US whether the applicant would consider both en-US raising the height of the buffer wall and en-US keeping the mini-storage facility at only two en-US stories to pacify some of the neighborhood en-US resistance.en-US I would personally trade some of that en-US open space for a larger, two-story storage en-US facility versus a smaller footprint and three en-US stories, he said. en-US Mr. Crady agreed to the first condition en-US but flatly rejected the second. en-US Unfortunately we do have a contract en-US pending for this three-story facility, but I en-US think if we can agree to an eight-foot wall, en-US he responded. en-US Commissioner Sarah Heard cast the lone en-US dissenting vote against the amendment and en-US peppered Mr. Crady with questions about en-US parking and buffering requirements and the en-US PUDs required public benefit. She also woren-US -en-US ried there would be a future county liability en-US after the developers $50,000 contribution to en-US beautify the median of Federal Highway.en-US What kind of agreement do we have with en-US Mariner Sands that theyre going to be proen-US -en-US viding for the maintenance of the landscapen-US -en-US ing? she asked. Im representing the counen-US -en-US ty, and I want to make sure that the county en-US taxpayers arent paying for the continued en-US maintenance.en-US A representative and resident of Mariner en-US Sands, Jack Carmody, said the community en-US had agreed to utilize the donation to buy en-US and plant the new greenery for the Federal en-US Highway median but wanted the county to en-US maintain it in the future. en-US We are on the opposite side of U.S. 1 but en-US we have a certain impact thats going to en-US come from that development, he said. It en-US just so happened that our beautification en-US committee was working on this when this en-US project came up, and we decided to try and en-US work out something that was mutually satisen-US -en-US factory. We have 771 homes and were payen-US -en-US ing taxes ourselves, and we believe for the en-US county to maintain that median after we fix en-US it is not going to take a lot of money off of en-USthe Martin County taxpayers.en-US Senior Assistant County Attorney Krista en-US Storey also addressed the publics concerns en-US about assisted living facilities popping up all en-US over the county, explaining that no current en-US regulations could limit such development.en-US The county does not have a requirement en-US in its code that considers a need or a lack of en-US a need for any type of facility, she said. en-US Thats generally true of commercial and en-US industrial projects, and the county does not en-US have a need-based land development reguen-US-en-US lation that would limit particular types of en-US facilities. en-US For his part, Chairman Ciampi encouren-US -en-US aged the nearby residents to continue paren-US -en-US ticipating in the future site-plan approvals en-US for the project.en-US As youve heard from some of my colen-US -en-US leagues and staff, this is a multi-step proen-US -en-US cess, he said. Youre in this for the long-en-US haul, and youre going to have to continue to en-US stay abreast of the situation. en-US 9 en-USMARTIN COUNTY A new group that en-US meets every other Sunday at 2 p.m. at the en-US Blake Library in Stuart, is seeking to build a en-US community of mothers who can get togethen-US -en-US er during their post-partum period. The en-US organization, known as It Takes a Village: en-US Mom-to-Mom Support got started in Feben-US-en-US ruary and is for mothers who are entering en-US into early motherhood with young children en-US and give them a safe place where they can en-US keep their identities and connect with paren-US -en-US enting resources.en-US This is an opportunity for people to en-US express their feelings during that time, said en-US Nicky Treadway, licensed mental health en-US counselor who leads the group. I have a en-US practice where I specialize in maternal menen-US-en-US tal health and so this is a way for these en-US women to have access to support services en-US through the community.en-US It is also a chance for women who might en-US not be able to afford therapy to be involved en-US with the group and process the many emoen-US-en-US tions and feelings that come during the en-US post-partum timeframe. It also is an opporen-US -en-US tunity for them to learn about others en-US thoughts and experiences on the subject and en-US provide lots of conversation.en-US The first two meetings went really well, en-US we were anticipating a slow start and in the en-US first one we had several moms show up and en-US the conversation flowed very easily and en-US thats a testament to the fact that moms need en-US this, Ms. Treadway said. They need to talk en-US and connect to other moms. In the second en-US one, we had a few moms show up, but we en-US also had some professionals from the comen-US -en-US munity there and assess the group to see if it en-US is a safe space for their clients to show up en-US and that was a great conversation about the en-US many resources that are available and what en-US is needed.en-US The style is very casual, and the sessions en-US begin with meditation and segue into local en-US commentary from a member of the comen-US -en-US munity to do a 15-minute presentation on en-US their area of expertise. The rest of the time is en-US devoted to open dialogue and is guide by en-US Ms. Treadway and another facilitator. In the en-US event that somebody needs counseling outen-US-en-US side the group, Ms. Treadway and others are en-US there to guide them in the appropriate en-US direction. The big platform that we stand en-US on is connection, Ms. Treadway said. en-US The support group is sponsored by The en-US Friends of the Martin County Library, and en-US the number of women who participate will en-US determine whether Mom-to-Mom will be en-US able to continue operating into the future. en-US The next meeting is April 8 from 2 to 3 p.m.en-US Everybody leaves saying, Oh my gosh, I en-US didnt know just how much I needed this, en-US and with smiles on their faces, Ms. Treaden-US -en-US way said. en-US 10 MARTIN COUNTY Students with a en-USpassion for art in Martin County now have a en-US way to express themselves and support a en-US good cause at the same time.en-US House of Hope has asked students to help en-US raise awareness about the National Letter en-US Carriers food drive by participating in the en-US inaugural Stamp Out Hunger Student Art en-US Contest. During the contest, young artists en-US can employ their creativity and talent to en-US bring attention to the issue of facing hunger en-US in the community and how important the en-US annual food drive is for residents.en-US We want to keep the youths engaged and en-US introduce them to philanthropy and being en-US aware of their community around them and en-US how they can have an impact in a positive en-US way from various levels of effort, said Tara en-US Jacobs, House of Hopes communications en-US and marketing specialist. Just having them en-US be familiar with what we do here, if that en-US were to inspire future volunteers and their en-US efforts that would definitely be an added en-US bonus.en-US A grand prize will be awarded to each of en-US the three divisions: elementary artists in en-US kindergarten through fifth grade; middle en-US school artists in sixth through eighth grade; en-US and high school artists in ninth through en-US 12th grade. The three grand prize winners en-US will receive a $100 Visa gift card, have their en-US artwork printed on limited edition T-shirts en-US and will be given a recognition plaque. All en-US Stamp Out Hunger Art Contest submissions en-US will be exhibited at the Martin County en-US Administration Building, as an added bonus en-US to the participants.en-US Were hoping for several-hundred entries en-US and so far the feedback weve gotten has en-US been very positive, said Lauren Mustelier, en-US who is House of Hopes volunteer manager. en-US Weve had a lot of our partners forward it en-US to groups they think would be appropriate en-US and I think those winning prizes are someen-US -en-US thing that has piqued the interest of the stuen-US -en-US dents.en-US While most 2D art mediums are accepten-US -en-US able, the artwork should include elements en-US such as the Letter Carriers and their trucks, en-US food donations, food pantries, and how the en-US donated food helps Martin County houseen-US-en-US holds, according to a press release. All en-US entries must be received at House of Hope en-US no later than 4 p.m. Friday, April 20. Comen-US -en-US plete contest rules and registration materials en-US can be found online at www.hohmartin.org/en-US artcontest.en-US The winner from each category will be en-US determined by the number of likes a piece en-US of artwork receives on House of Hopes en-US Facebook page, combined with a score from en-US the judges panel. The Student Art Contest en-US judging panel includes locals such as Ed en-US Ciampi, Tina McSoley, Eve Samples and a en-US representative from the National Associaen-US -en-US tion of Letter Carriers. The submitted arten-US-en-US work will be displayed at the Stamp Out en-US Hunger Kick Off & Art Contest Awards en-US Party May 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the winner en-US from each category will be announced at 7 en-US p.m. The party will be hosted at House of en-US Hopes Stuart Service Center located at 2484 en-US S.E. en-US 14 en-USJENSEN BEACH Ambition is a key part en-US of theater productions, and Jensen Beach en-US High Schools theater department is preparen-US -en-US ing a show about the ambition of a young en-US woman in New York City.en-US Thoroughly Modern Millie, which feaen-US -en-US tures a large cast and crew of more than 40, en-US will be presented starting April 5, and it is en-US an ambitious undertaking, according to en-US drama and English teacher Dana McNiel. In en-US many cases, the cast members are seniors en-US particularly the student director, female and en-US male leads and Ms. McNiel said shes had en-US the chance to see all of the cast grow in their en-US chosen discipline.en-US Every production is special, because the en-US kids choose what they want to do and so en-US they chose last year that they wanted to do en-US Millie and its something weve never done en-US before and never performed any type of jazz en-US or tap dancing, Ms. McNiel said. So they en-US wanted to challenge themselves and they en-US learned how to do that for this show and en-US they took tap lessons in the fall and chalen-US -en-US lenged themselves to do something theyve en-US never done before.en-US Set in New York City in 1922,Thoren-US -en-US oughly Modern Millietells the story of en-US young Millie Dillmount from Kansas, who en-US comes to New York in search of a new life en-US for herself, a press release states. Her grand en-US plan is to find a job as a secretary for a en-US wealthy man and then marry him. However, en-US her plan goes completely awry. The owner en-US of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls en-US to sell to the Far East, her wealthy boss en-US is slow in proposing marriage and the en-US man she actually falls in love with en-US doesnt have a dime to his name... or so en-US he tells her.en-US Filled with frisky flappers, dashing en-US leading men and a dragon lady of a vilen-US -en-US lainess that audiences will love to en-US hate,Thoroughly Modern Millieis an en-US evening of madcap merriment, the en-US release continued. From explosive tap en-US numbers to a Fred and Ginger routine en-US on a window ledge, this is the perfect en-US show for theatres that are looking to show en-US off the dance skills of their performers. In en-US Millie Dillmount, musical theatre has found en-US a new heroine for the ages inThoroughly en-US Modern Millie.en-US Senior Maggie Engel plays the title charen-US -en-US acter Millie, and she said her growth in en-US theater has been significant at JBHS. The en-US play is an opportunity to continue to expand en-US her options onstage and looks forward to en-US attending either the Savannah College of en-US Art & Design or the University of Central, en-US where she plans to double-major in theater en-US and entertainment management. She has en-US been in eight total productions at JBHS, en-US including The Sound of Music last year en-US and previously in The Wizard of Oz.en-US I think Ive grown a lot, from being able en-US to do just the one character, because Doroen-US-en-US thy was a little girl and she is very innocent en-US and thats me, Ms. Engel said. So, being en-US able to lay the reverend mother last year and en-US a suspect for Murders in the Air makes me en-US more well-rounded in my characters and en-US Ive enjoyed being able to expand.en-US Male lead Kurt Myers, also a senior, plays en-US Jimmy, and he echoed Ms. Engels sentien-US-en-US ments that he would like to continue in film en-US studies at the university level. He is looking en-US forward to the chance to progress in the theen-US -en-US ater by way of the musical and has many en-US theater credits to his name as well. He also en-US has played Cogsworth in Beauty and the en-US Beast.en-US Im really excited for people to see the en-US show and I think its one of our best so far; en-US Im just glad to be a part of it and be part of en-US this family and its been a great experience, en-US Mr. Myers said. I want to go into film in en-US college, so the acting aspect is definitely a en-US plus for me.en-US Student Director Hannah Favier said she en-US prefers to be behind the scenes and is anticien-US -en-US pating a career in theater as well. The play en-US was the third in her list of directorial credits, en-US and she said it is going to be a fun producen-US -en-US tion that should have audiences excited en-US from the opening number. The senior previen-US -en-US ously directed The Sound of Music last en-US year and a one-act play.en-US All those plays are very different shows, en-US and Thoroughly Modern Millie is very fun en-US and exciting and new, Ms. Macchia said. en-US Its a big production. All of our productions en-US are quite large, but this show has been so en-US much and its been lovely and the cast has en-US been fantastic and we have a lot of great peren-US -en-US formers.en-US General admission tickets are $15 and en-US tickets for students and senior citizens cost en-US $10.en-US The play will be onstage at the Jensen en-US Beach High School auditorium from Thursen-US -en-US day, April 5 to Sunday, April 8. So itll be interacting with that eleen-US -en-US ment.en-US The cast includes several performers from en-US The Barns recently concluded musical, en-US Young Frankenstein, such as Caroline en-US Crain, Elizabeth Lienhardt, Austin Parriott, en-US Andy Morejon, Kyle Webber and Mr. Mazen-US -en-US zella. The Treasure Coast Tappers under en-US the direction of Bette Cushman include en-US Barbara Warsager, Michelle Edwards, Peggy en-US Gutherz and Mr. and Mrs. Mazzella.en-US The Barn Theatre has sold out every one en-US of its fundraising concerts in the past, and en-US organizers hope to raise sufficient funds en-US from this concert to help pay for repaving its en-US driveway and for roof repairs. Dont miss en-US the dazzling costumes, phenomenal dancen-US -en-US ing and exceptional singing. Oh, and there en-US will be a wine and cheese party before the en-US show, the press release continued. en-US Itll be not only a listening thing, but they en-US will have an opportunity to enjoy the visual en-US effects of the concert, Mr. Mazzella said. en-US So, its got the full package and were going en-US to explore that and use it. We also have a en-US new surround-sound system and so its en-US going to be a really great concert to listen en-US to. en-US Tickets are $20 for the show, with showen-US -en-US times on Friday and Saturday from 8 to 10 en-US p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.en-US For tickets or more information, call (772) en-US 287-4884 or visit the Barns website at en-USwww.en-US barn-theatre.com. en-US The theater is located at en-US 2400 S.E. en-US 16 en-USMen-USost of the time, when I get calls for en-US computer help I can usually figure en-US out how to fix things out instincen-US -en-US tively. Why? Well because I examine the en-US contents of the different menus looking for en-US the option that will most likely get me en-US closer to my goal (while keeping in mind en-US whatever it is Im trying to do). en-US As an added bonus, just about every en-US program out there that has pull down en-US menus have Help listed as the last one to en-US the right. So by the time I get to the last pull en-US down menu I can always open that en-US programs help file and do a search on what en-US Im trying to do. The help file will then list en-US all the topics that contain whatever words I en-US searched on and from there I can usually en-US figure out how to take the next step.en-US Lets take a look at this in an example. en-US Lets say Im writing my column with a en-US typical word processing program and I en-US wanted to make the next line that I type en-US bold and larger. Lets also say that I only en-US have a very basic understanding of en-US computers. At this point I have two choices, en-US I can stare at the screen with a blank en-US expression and then call Bob (whos pretty en-US good with computers) and ask him or, I can en-US start looking around the screen for en-US something that may help me reach my goal.en-US As I move my mouse (and my eyes!) en-US around the screen I notice a couple of en-US things; first at the top of the screen, above en-US where the words are being typed, there are en-US (often) rows of menus and buttons en-US available. And, as I move my mouse slowly en-US over the buttons, little boxes pop up telling en-US me what each button does. When I click on en-US the File option it opens (or pulls down) en-US and I can see all of the commands that are en-US available that have to do with Filing. As I en-US move my mouse to the right, the File pull en-US down menu closes and the Edit menu en-US opens displaying all of the commands en-US available for editing. Next the View pull en-US down menu opens and then the Insert en-US menu opens. As each menu opens I look at en-US all the options available and for each one I en-US ask myself does this option look like it will en-US help me change my text to bold and en-US larger? And as each menu does not present en-US an option I go on to the next one eventually en-US getting to the Format pull down menu.en-US When Format opens, I see it lists Bullets en-US and numbering Borders and shading en-US and whats this? Font? Hmmm. Im en-US trying to change the formatting of my text en-US and text is made up of fonts. Thinking I en-US may be on the right track, I click the Fonts en-US option and a screen opens that allows me to en-US change the characteristics of the type. en-US Bingo! Exactly what I am looking for! It en-US says I am typing in Times New Roman, en-US Regular, Size 12. One of the most en-US practical ways is through the use of roses. en-US Roses are beautiful flowers that symbolize en-US love and friendship. Imagine yourself en-US entertaining your friends in a lovely alcove en-US surrounded by colorful flowers. Roses are en-US relatively easy to grow and are a great en-US choice because they will often grow where en-US other flowers wont because of Floridas en-US intense summer sun. You can buy roses as en-US either a container plant or as bare root-en-US stock. en-US Roses can be successfully planted in en-US either containers or in the ground. In either en-US case, the plants should be in well-drained en-US soil in a sunny location. If you plant your en-US treasures in the ground, be sure the soil en-US drains well. Dig a hole about 15 18 inches en-US wide and 18 inches deep. Put a layer of en-US gravel on the bottom of the hole. This is to en-US allow drainage so water drains away from en-US the root system. The same would apply if en-US you plant your roses in a container. The en-US next step is to prepare the soil you are going en-US to use to plant your roses. You should use a en-US mix of a good quality potting soil with en-US around half the mixture composed of en-US organic matter such as mulch or peat. You en-US can also use some bone meal with your soil en-US mixture. Now, its finally time to plant your en-US prize. Carefully remove the plant from its en-US original container. Place the plant in your en-US prepared hole so the top of soil layer on the en-US plant is the same level as the surrounding en-US soil. Fill the gap underneath the plant with en-US your prepared soil mixture. Now, fill the en-US gaps around the remaining parts of the en-US plant and pack down lightly. You are now en-US ready to water in your newly planted rose. en-US OK, you finally have your roses planted en-US and they are bursting with color, now you en-US need to do some periodic maintenance to en-USmaintain that beauty. Since we live in such a en-US humid climate, certain diseases such as en-US black powdery mildew and black spot can en-US both be a common problem. Both diseases en-US are much easier to control if you prevent en-US them happening in the first place. Once en-US established, both are very difficult to get rid en-US of. Although there are many products on en-US the market that are used for disease control en-US on roses, Orthenex reigns as the king. The en-US product controls not only diseases but also en-US controls insect infestation as well. If you are en-US interested in an all-natural cure for fungus, en-US how about baking soda. Thats right, baking en-US soda. Plain ordinary baking soda added at en-US the rate of 3 teaspoons per gallon of water. en-US You then can add a small amount of mild en-US dish detergent to the mix to act as a en-US spreader sticker. This will work as a en-US preventive measure but will not work well if en-US an infection is present. Be sure not to make en-US your mix too strong as damage to your en-US roses could result. en-US With all the remedies that we have at our en-US disposal for controlling rose problems, en-US probably the best way is prevention. One en-US way is to avoid watering late in the day so en-US the leaves of the plant do not stay wet all en-US night. Also it is important to have good soil en-US drainage. en-US Roses are heavy feeders and like a good en-US supply of food. Roses should be fed at least en-US once a month. You can use a good quality en-US commercial food or you can use your own en-US mix, which should consist of one cup of en-US bone meal, one cup cottonseed meal, en-US one-half cup blood meal, one-half cup en-US fish-meal and one-half cup Epsom salts. en-US You can spread this mix around each plant en-US and then water in. en-USJoe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape. en-US Send e-mails to hometowngarden@gmail.en-US com or visit his Web site www.hometownen-US -en-US garden.com. Celebrate Florida Day Pascua with a seafood feast en-USEen-USarlier this week a special event took en-US place; Florida Day Pascua or Feast of en-US Flowers Day. en-US It is the day Ponce de Leon landed in en-US Florida in search of the Fountain of Youth, en-US but, instead, he changed its food history en-US forever. The Timucua Indians inhabited the en-US coasts of Florida at that time and they en-US enjoyed the local bounty of seafood, bear, en-US deer, turkey and alligators. The Spanish en-US called them dragons. en-US Their most popular and plentiful source en-US of food must have been oysters, because of en-US the number of oyster shell mounds found en-US along the coast with many more than 40 en-US feet high. Oysters were so plentiful the state en-US used ground oyster shells to build the en-US highway system. en-US Cooking was done over an open fire that en-US had crisscrossed strips of wood resembling en-US a grill. They were called Barbacoa. Meats en-US and fish were smoked on the wooden grills. en-US This cooking technique developed over the en-US years to be called BBQ. Caribbean pirates en-US used the Barbacoa to cook their food when en-US on land; oh, and drink their rum yo-ho, en-US yo-ho! Some historians believe that is where en-US the term Buccaneers came from. en-US Now what about the Spanish and food? en-US It all started when Columbus first came to en-US the New World and introduced foods from en-US Spain and Europe. He also gathered foods en-US from local natives in the Caribbean as well en-US as from Cuba. All this bounty was brought en-US to Florida with Ponce De Leon. en-US Local natives grew potatoes, corn, en-US melons, a type of wild celery, and onions. en-US Are you ready? The Spanish introduced en-US pigs, goats, lamb, chickens, horses, and beef en-US cattle. Thats not all. They also brought olive en-US oil, wine, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, en-US lemons, oranges, peaches, basil, oregano en-US and thyme. The Spanish introduced wheat en-US bread to Florida. Since wheat couldnt grow en-US here, they copied the local native corn en-US fritters, which eventually became known as en-US hushpuppies. en-US While the Spanish explored Florida, the en-US soldiers would eat oranges they had en-US brought with them spitting out the seeds as en-US they walked. Throughout the state there en-US are pockets of sour orange trees growing, en-US left over from the Spanish soldiers. Maybe en-US you have one in your yard. We do!en-US They also turned the cattle loose to roam en-US the state. Florida is the second largest en-US producer of cattle in the U.S. During the en-US late 1700s, cattle ranching took root. Men of en-US Scottish decent were recruited from en-US Georgia and South Carolina to find the en-US cattle. They were not called cowboys, but en-US cow herders. They were also called Florida en-US Crackers, which is a Scottish term for en-US someone who likes to play jokes and be en-US rowdy.en-US Florida has so much food history and en-US much of it is due to the Spanish. Here is a en-US simple seafood chowder recipe the Spanish en-US and early Florida settlers made. It is very, en-US very good and healthy, too.en-USFLORIDA CHOWDERen-USServings 6-8en-US Ingredientsen-US 1 pound hard shell clams, in the shell en-US (place right into the pot)en-US Several types of seafood whatever you en-US can afford: two filets of farm raised en-US catfish, 1/2 pound shrimp in the shell, en-US 1/2 pound raw oysters en-US 2 ounces salt pork, minced (optional)en-US 1 tablespoon olive oilen-US 2 teaspoons minced thymeen-US 1 teaspoon dried basilen-US 1teaspoon dried oreganoen-US 3 cloves garlic, minceden-US 1 bay leafen-US 1 red bell pepper, minceden-US 1 large red onion, minceden-US 3 plum tomatoes, choppeden-US 3 cups fish or chicken stock, store-en-US bought, add enough liquid to cover en-US product if neededen-US 1 pound B-Red potatoes, peeled and cut en-US in halfen-US Kosher salt and freshly ground black en-US pepper, to tasteen-US The early Floridians liked hot peppers. en-US Add 1 datil or habanero chile, minced (if en-US you want a little heat, this will not make it en-US too hot)en-US Directionsen-US I cook it settlers style, place everything in en-US the pot and cook over medium heat until en-US vegetable are soft, clams open up and the en-US fish is tender.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of the Mori en-US Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State College. en-US Contact him at (386) 506-3578 or en-US magoulc@en-US daytonastate.edu. en-US 19 en-USTimes New Roman, Bold, Size 14, click OK en-US and voila! My typing is now larger and en-US darker. en-US OK, so, that rather tame demonstration is en-US just an example of how intuitive computing en-US works; at no time did I ever get the urge to en-US go get a book or call tech support for help, I en-US kept in mind what I was trying to do and, en-US after seeing what options were available, en-US discovered the answer on my own. en-US Now, I know that the things you have en-US trouble doing are far more complex than en-US just changing the characteristics of text, en-US how can this possibly help me? And to that en-US I answer the lesson is not in how to change en-US the font size, the lesson is where to go for en-US your answers! en-US Notice that the menus I looked at were all en-US within the program I was using. You should en-US look at the menus and options available en-US within the program where you are stuck. en-US Also notice that each pull down menu is a en-US category; all filing options are under File en-US and we found our Font options under the en-US Format pull down menu. That was no en-US coincidence. I would have been very en-US surprised to find the Fonts option under the en-US File pull down menu but starting at File and en-US moving to the right covers all the bases and en-US rapidly gets you familiar with all the menus en-US available.en-US Email en-US help@ComputeThisOnline.com. To en-US properly enjoy the first major of the en-US year, you will need a few things.en-US Grab some extra sharp cheddar cheese en-US (10-12 ounces), spreadable cream cheese, a en-US large jar of diced pimentos, black pepper, a en-US loaf of white bread, powdered sugar, tea en-US bags, mint sprigs and a bottle of your en-US favorite bourbon. The last item is not a en-US requirement, but some of you may prefer to en-US enjoy a libation. Sweet tea works well for en-US those of you who prefer a non-alcoholic en-US drink. en-US For me, nothing rings in the beginning of en-US Spring quite like The Masters. With todays en-US television coverage, we now get to enjoy en-US every hole of this masterpiece of a golf en-US course. Thanks to my childhood, The en-US Masters is my favorite tournament. As a en-US child my late parents would let me skip en-US school and the three of us would drive from en-US our home in Warner Robins, Georgia to en-US Augusta. It became a ritual every Tuesday en-US of Masters week. For just $5 each wed lace en-US up our best walking shoes and trek onto the en-US hallowed grounds of Augusta National.en-US I was only eight when I attended my first en-US Masters practice round. The place had an en-US aura about it. The flowers, the perfectly en-US groomed fairways and greens all combined en-US in jaw-dropping beauty. I remember how en-US green everything was with the breathtaking en-US coloring from the flowering trees splashed en-US in.en-US Because it was a practice round I was en-US able to meet and talk with most of the en-US players teeing it up each year. Every year I en-US would find myself picking one of those that en-US I met and pulling for him to slip on the en-US Green Jacket come Sunday. Last year was en-US special as my friend, Sergio Garcia en-US triumphed.en-US I felt incredible joy along with Jack en-US Nicklaus when he won for the sixth time in en-US 1986. I found myself remembering that day en-US a decade or more before when he promised en-US my mom that hed sign her ticket, and en-US looked for, and found, her in a crowd, en-US telling everyone that he promised her first. en-US My mom, at all of five-foot tall was not easy en-US to find in a large crowd, but Jack was en-US persistent. en-US One year, I met Lee Elder, the first en-US African-American to play in the Masters, en-US and thinking then, Why would anyone not en-US want this fine gentleman to play in their en-US tournament?. en-US The reasons many of us love The Masters en-US are numerous. For some seeing the same en-US course, and watching todays great players en-US conquer the same hole that Gene Sarazen en-US double-eagled to win in 1935 has a familiar en-US warmth to it. Its like seeing an old, dear en-US friend once a year. Its the only time well en-US see him, but we look forward to it knowing en-US that moment marks the beginning of the en-US best part of the year.en-US Some of us love the tradition that goes en-US with The Masters. Its the only tournament en-US that gives a spot in the field for every past en-US champion and starts play with a ceremonial en-US tee shot from our games living legends. It is en-US a fitting way to honor those who have en-US triumphed where so many of us only dream en-US of walking.en-US Now for the reasons that you need to en-US head to the store. One my favorite Masters en-US traditions is enjoying a pimento cheese en-US sandwich. Since most of us will not be at en-US Augusta National this weekend, well have en-US to make our own. To honor the tournament en-US I love so much, one that taught me so much en-US and that brings back a flood of fond en-US memories and a few tears to go with them, I en-US give to you my own secret recipe for those en-US famous pimento cheese sandwiches. en-US Masters Pimento Cheese Sandwich: one en-US stick of extra sharp cheddar cheese (10-12 en-US ounces), grated; 4 ounces or more soft, en-US spreadable cream cheese; diced pimentos, en-US not well drained; black pepper to taste. Mix en-US and serve on your choice of bread. I prefer en-US to cut the sandwich into triangle-shaped en-US quarters. en-US To drink, one must have some good, old en-US southern sweet tea or perhaps a Mint Julep. en-US My favorite is easy to make. Take 4 fresh en-US mint sprigs, 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar, en-US and 2 teaspoons of water and muddle them en-US in a glass. Fill the glass with crushed ice and en-US then add about 2-3 ounces of your favorite en-US bourbon. Stir and enjoy.en-US While you are enjoying your sandwiches en-US and beverage, flip on the television and en-US watch the years first major. I will be en-US watching along with you, with a smile on en-US my face and a tear in my eye as I think en-US about those wonderful days so long ago, en-US spent with my mother and father. en-US Contact James Stammer at en-USstammergolf@en-US yahoo.com.
