en-USMargaritaville part two en-US is moving forwarden-USLatitude Margaritaville will continue to expand as en-US Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co. announced about en-US 1,614 acres of land subject to the sales contract with en-US Minto Communities received the necessary develen-US -en-US opment approvals from the City of Daytona Beach en-US Nov. 7. en-US Minto will now be able to develop 3,250 more sinen-US-en-US gle-family residential units and about 200,000 en-US square feet of commercial space. The company en-US already has approval to build up to 3,400 houses in en-US the first phase.en-US However, Consolidated-Tomoka and Minto en-US agreed to extend the $26.5 million land buy contract en-US to allow Minto to complete additional due diligence en-US with respect to its anticipated infrastructure en-US costs for the development. The extension en-US allows for the transaction to close during or en-US before the early part of 2019.en-US Daytona Beach commissioners unanien-US-en-US mously approved several ordinances related en-US to the development.en-US The first was to approve a voluntary en-US annexation of 2.13 acres of land located west and en-US adjacent to Tymber Creek Road South and south of en-US Old Tomoka Road, contiguous to the municipal en-US boundary. The second was to adopt a Large-Scale en-US Comprehensive Plan Amendment amending the en-US Future Land Use Element, Neighborhood V, to en-US increase the residential density and reduce the en-US non-residential intensity for 1,614 acres of land en-US located west of Interstate 95 and south of State Road en-US 40 en-US to permit the en-US development of the 3,250 residential en-US dwelling units and limit the commercial developen-US -en-US ment to 200,000 square feet.en-US The last item approved was a request to rezone en-US 1,614 acres of land west of Interstate 95 and south of en-US State Road 40 from County Rural Agriculture and en-USThe Volusia County en-US School Board unanimously en-US entered into two separate en-US land-use contracts, which, if en-US eventually closed, will net the en-US district about $7.7 million.en-US The first land-use contract, en-US between the district and JW en-US Kearn Investments LLC, conen-US -en-US cerns four acres of a larger en-US 76-acre property in DeLand. en-US The four acres sit at the en-US southwest corner of State en-US Road 44 and County Road en-US 4139 in DeLand. en-US Originally purchased by en-US the board in the early 1990s en-US as a potential site for Univeren-US -en-US sity High School, the project en-US was scrapped in that area en-US when the City of DeLand en-US went on record stating it did en-US not want two high schools in en-US the city limits, said Saralee en-US Morrissey, district director of en-US planning.en-US In 2006, we considered it en-US for a new administrative cenen-US -en-US ter, Ms. Morrissey said at the en-US boards regular meeting Nov. en-US 7 in DeLand. We started en-US some work on that project, en-US but it was canceled.en-US Since that time, the propen-US -en-US erty has been redesignated by en-US the City of DeLand as activien-US -en-US ties center use, she said. en-US That designation is actually en-US consistent with what was in en-US the market analysis we had en-US done in 2016, and the resoluen-US-en-US tion that went with (declaren-US -en-US ing the property surplus) en-US stated that we would only en-US consider selling for projects en-US that went with that market en-US analysis.en-US An example of that type of en-US designation has been used en-US for land adjacent to Deltona en-US High School, she said.en-US It has the RaceTrac, a theen-US -en-US ater and several other things, en-US she said.en-USSchool board could en-US get $7.7 millionen-US for land sales en-USERAU ambassadors en-US pave way for en-US student veteransen-USIt is not easy making the en-US transition from military life en-US to college life. en-US So at Embry-Riddle Aeroen-US-en-US nautical University, Michael en-US Janvier, a senior and U.S. en-US Marine Corps veteran and en-US Rebecca Perini, a graduate en-US student and U.S. Navy veteren-US -en-US an, serve as student ambassaen-US -en-US dors. They, along with othen-US-en-US ers, assist fellow veterans on en-US the Daytona Beach campus en-US through the Veteran Ambasen-US-en-US sador program, which is part en-US of Veteran Student Services.en-US I go to school, but I have a en-US work study position through en-US the VA, Ms. Perini said. I en-US work in the office at Veteran en-US Student Services and part of en-US that is being a veteran en-US ambassador. I man the front en-US desk and help people that en-US come into the office. I direct en-US them towards whichever en-US counselor they need to talk en-US to or any resources that we en-US have on the board for them. en-US She talks to prospective en-US students on the telephone en-US and helps process paperen-US -en-US work for student benefits en-US under the GI Bill and assists en-US counselors as well. en-US Some people struggle en-US with making that adjustment en-US (coming from active duty), en-US Ms. Perini said. Just by haven-US -en-US ing familiar faces around en-US campus that other veterans en-US can identify as people that en-US have gone through the same en-US thing that they have gone en-US through, it builds a support en-US network. Even if I dont know en-US every veteran by name, a lot en-US of times you recognize their en-US faces and they know they can en-US come talk to you. You are en-US kind of always on the clock. en-US You are going to take the en-US time to help them.en-US She described her own en-US experience in adjusting as en-US being initially laser-focused en-US from her military training en-US and having to tone it down en-US and become more personen-US -en-US able and less high strung. en-US You are not going to do en-US well on campus if you are en-US alienating yourself from your en-US classmates, she said. You en-US cant really help other people en-US if you are not OK yourself. en-USFinal en-US wishes en-US should en-US include en-US petsen-USWhat will happen to your en-US pet when you die?en-US Most people consider pets en-US members of the family. They en-US carry pictures of them, they en-US buy them gifts for the holidays en-US and, in many cases, they have en-US free rein of the house, includen-US-en-US ing the bed. But taking care of en-US beloved animal companions en-US after you are gone is not just en-US for the rich and famous like en-US Leona Helmsley and Betty en-US White. Florida has a law for en-US animal owners to provide care en-US for pets when owners are no en-US longer able. en-US You can set up a trust that en-US will provide funds to a trusted en-US person or organization, which en-US will be legally obligated to folen-US -en-US low your wishes. A-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USPrior to coming to ERAU, en-US Ms. Perini served four years en-US in the Nen-US avy with a nine-en-US month deployment to the en-US Middle East on the USS Harry en-US S. Truman. As an aviation en-US electronics technician, she en-US performed maintenance and en-US troubleshooting on the en-US Advanced Targeting Forward en-US Looking Infrared for the en-US fighter and attack jet, the F/A-en-US 18 Super Hornet.en-US Besides being a Veteran en-US Ambassador, Ms. Perini is en-US enrolled in the Human Facen-US -en-US tors Masters of Science degree en-US program. She also is a graduen-US -en-US ate research assistant in Cogen-US -en-US nitive Engineering Research en-US in Transportation Systems en-US Lab in the College of Aviaen-US -en-US tion.en-US After graduating in May en-US with her masters degree, she en-US knows she has choices, possien-US -en-US bly commissioning in the en-US Navy as an aviation mainteen-US -en-US nance officer or working as a en-US civilian with the military or a en-US defense contractor. Her bachen-US -en-US elors degree from Flagler en-US College in St. Augustine is a en-US liberal arts degree, which en-US included graphic design and en-US Spanish. en-US Mr. Janvier, a spaceflight en-US operations senior, also en-US explains to fellow stuen-US -en-US dent-veterans how he was en-US once in their shoes. He is en-US hoping to work in the space en-US industry in management, as en-US an operations specialist or in en-US a logistics position. He is en-US open to any position in any en-US location. en-US This school is prestigious en-US and a tough school to get into en-US and graduate from, he said. en-US A lot of veterans are not en-US ready for that type of educaen-US -en-US tional level. So, it is good to en-US have someone to talk to, en-US someone to help them out, to en-US help them with the little en-US things so they can focus on en-US the education process. en-US The toughest part for me en-US was finding a sense of puren-US -en-US pose, he said. I went en-US through some stuff and I had en-US other veteran friends help me en-US through it and having that en-US opportunity to help other veten-US-en-US erans out is what brought me en-US to be an ambassador, the idea en-US of helping them.en-US During Orientation Week, en-US veterans are informed of the en-US benefits theyen-US get and how the en-US school helps them, and aveen-US -en-US nues they can go if they have en-US any school related issues.en-US But it doesnt stop there.en-US We are a go-between for en-US the student and the faculty, en-US Janvier said. Since we are veten-US -en-US erans ourselves, we see what en-US they are going through and en-US we might have been in that en-US situation during our freshen-US -en-US men and sophomore year. We en-US help them get the help and en-US information that they need.en-US He has worked at Veteran en-US Student Services since he en-US started at ERAU in 2015, folen-US -en-US lowing nine years in the U.S. en-US Marine Corps. Earning the en-US rank of sergeant, he was an en-US avionics technician on MV-22 en-US Osprey tiltrotor aircraft with en-US two deployments to Afghanien-US -en-US stan and Kuwait. en-US When hes not in class helpen-US -en-US ing to build payloads that will en-US travel in space, hes with the en-US Veterans of Foreign Wars Post en-US 1590 in Daytona en-US Beach as a en-US member of the honor guen-US ard. She served for eight en-US years. Quanita May, who won en-US the Nov. 6 election, will be en-US sworn in to represent the zone en-US at an upcoming meeting.en-US Despite several inquiries in en-US the last two years about the en-US property, the district held firm en-US to theen-US resolution -a move that en-US seems to potentially be about en-US to pay off.en-US We have had a lot of interen-US -en-US est in this property, but the en-US bulk of that interest was for en-US single-family residential, Ms. en-US Morrissey said. This contract en-US is for a portion of the 76 acres, en-US for a corner of four acres, for en-US the beginning of developing en-US non-residential uses for that en-US property.en-US The appraisal for the total en-US 76 acres is $4 million, with the en-US appraisal of the four acres en-US came in at $200,000 per acre en-US for a value of $800,000. Howen-US-en-US ever, the contract offer is for a en-US substantial gain over the en-US appraisal. en-US This contract is for $1.8 en-US million, a value of $450,000 en-US per acre, and that is because of en-US the commercial nature of the en-US proposed use, Ms. Morrissey.en-US If the contract moves foren-US -en-US ward following the 120-day en-US feasibility period, as well as en-US time needed for other requireen-US-en-US ments, the expected closing en-US would be a year away, around en-US December 2019, she said.en-US The board also voted unanien-US-en-US mously to enter into a second en-US land-use contract of $5.9 milen-US-en-US lion for the remaining 78 acres en-US of what is known as the en-US Advanced Technology Center en-US property off LPGA Boulevard en-US in Daytona Beach. en-US The contract is between the en-US board and Southeast Real en-US Estate Acquisitions LLC of en-US Atlanta, a developer of en-US multi-family residential propen-US-en-US erties, and it might not be an en-US easy closing to reach, Ms. en-US Morrissey said.en-US One of the negatives with en-US this property is that it does not en-US have its land use and zoning, en-US so there is quite a bit of work en-US that a buyer will have to do to en-US get their approval. There are en-US quite a few wetlands on it, she en-US said. A 120-day feasibility en-US period would be followed by a en-US development approval proen-US-en-US cess, with an anticipated closen-US -en-US ing no later than January en-US 2020.en-US A previous contract on the en-US same property entered into in en-US March by the school board en-US was canceled by the buyer folen-US -en-US lowing the 120-day feasibility en-US period.en-USSalesen-USFrom page A1en-USForwarden-USFrom page A1 en-USSome elections still en-US too close to callen-USWhile the recount apparen-US -en-US ently was completed for goven-US -en-US ernor, some races were still en-US up in the air at presstime.en-US Republican Ron DeSantis en-US outpolled Democrat Andrew en-US Gillum by a thin margin. en-US Complete but unofficial en-US results from the Florida en-US Division of Elections show en-US former U.S. Rep. Granada Blvd. en-US The goal of the series is to en-US gather resident input to share en-US with the Ormond Beach City en-US Commission as it updates the en-US citys strategic plan in 2019. en-US The discussion will be led by en-USTen-UShis weekend we are at the en-US center of the antique and en-US collector car universe en-US with the huge Turkey Run at the en-US speedway and the Birthplace of en-US Speed events at Ormond Beach. en-USAutomobiles from the en-US earliest days to the present will en-US be on display for all to see. en-US Lots of fun to be sure and en-US most of us will be able to find en-US at least one car that will bring en-US back a flood of memories. en-US Lets face it, America is the en-US most automobile-oriented en-US nation on the planet and it has en-US been that way right from the en-US beginning. en-US Most of us can remember en-US our first car, or perhaps the en-US one we had on our first date. en-US Maybe it wen-US ill be the vehicle in en-US which we courted our spouse, en-US but whatever your connection en-US you could en-US find that car here en-US this weekend. en-US When I began to think of en-US my own car memories, I had en-US so many it took a while to sift en-US through them. After all, I have en-US been a car guy since long en-US before I had a drivers license. en-US Much of my life has evolved en-US around what type of wheels I en-US owned. en-US One of my favorites is when en-US I was a 20-year-old working in en-US the Midwest. One day I found en-US myself without a car or en-US money. Not a good place to en-US be. In those days if I wanted a en-US date, I knew I had to have a en-US ride. I went to a local junk en-US yard and told the owner if he en-US had a clunker I might fix, I en-US would pay him for it on en-USinstallments. He said no, but en-US he had a 1953 Ford I could en-US buy outright for 50 bucks. en-US When I saw the little Ford, I en-US loved it. The grass around it en-US was four feet high, but I could en-US tell that the car was solid en-US without rust. en-US Somehow I managed to get en-US the $50 and was able to talk en-US the guy into giving me an old en-US used battery. The car started en-US right up and I took it home. It en-US looked awful with terrible en-US paint. I removed all of the en-US chrome, filled the holes and, en-US with a borrowed gun, painted en-US the Ford a bright birds egg en-US blue. (I didnt want anyone to en-US miss me as I cruised.) en-US As you might imagine with en-US any 50-buck car, there had to en-US be problems. This one had no en-US piston rings and the engine en-US blew black smoke as it burned en-US oil. Back then stations sold oil en-US in bulk for a dime a quart if en-US you had your own container, en-US and I had to have a couple en-US gallons of oil to get through a en-US day of driving. Still, I loved en-US that Ford. en-US Soon I found myself en-US spending a couple days in the en-US little town of Algona, Iowa. At en-US the local hamburger stand, my en-US blue Ford caused quite a stir en-US and caught the eye of a cute en-US red head. Right away I asked en-US her for a date for the following en-US night and she said yes. Now en-US understand it was not because en-US of my charm. In that little en-US farming town, a new fellow en-US had an easy time of it just by en-US being different. Not many en-US newcomers there. en-US The next evening I filled the en-US Ford with oil and pulled up in en-US front of her house at the en-US appointed time. While I was en-US on her porch, another car en-US pulled up and the guy driving en-US yelled out the red head was his en-US girl. We discussed that at en-US length and finally the fellow en-US says if you think that blue en-US Ford is so hoen-US t, lets race for the en-US date. en-US Now I could see that his en-US ride was a Chevy and I en-US knew that car would be en-US powered by a six cylinder. en-US (Chevrolet came out with en-US their first V-8 in 1955.) No en-US competition for my eight-cylen-US -en-US inder Ford. The race was on. I en-US told red to come ride in my en-US car and off we went. Out on en-US the highway I pulled way en-US ahead and laid down so much en-US smoke, the Chevy couldnt see en-US when I had made a turn. The en-US red head was mine. Aah, what en-US a memory. I hope you find en-US yours this weekend. en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, en-US The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. A-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USyou can have the peace of en-US mind your directions will be en-US carried outen-US. Instructions also en-US can be part of a will. en-US Debra G. Simms is a local en-US attorney who en-USspecializes in en-US estate planning, special needs en-US trusts and probate along with en-US other services. Creating pet en-US trusts is one of her specialties.en-US My pet (Simba) is part of en-US my family Ms. Simms said. I en-US worry if I am out too long, if en-US he needs to be fed, the same en-US way you feel anxious and en-US worry about a young child.en-US It is important to plan for en-US your pets because otherwise en-US they are going to be euthaen-US -en-US nized. What are you going to en-US do if you die before the pets? en-US There are a lot of things to en-US think about, Ms. Simms said. en-US You can do a pet trust in a en-US will, or you can set up a sepaen-US -en-US rate pet trust. If its a valid pet en-US trust and the amount left is en-US reasonable, it is not going to go en-US anywhere. en-US It could be contested, but en-US the court probably would side en-US with the pen-US et owners wishes. en-US Ms. Simms stated if you are en-US doing an estate planning docen-US -en-US ument anyway, it is only going en-US to be a nominal additional en-US cost.en-US She described clients comen-US -en-US ing to her stating they dont en-US care where their money goes en-US as long as their pets are cared en-US for. She added to many espeen-US -en-US cially single adults, their pets en-US are their children. en-US Things to think about before en-US setting money aside are who en-US can be trusted to oversee the en-US pets care, what it will cost to en-US feed the pet for the estimated en-US rest of theien-USr life, potential en-US medical costs, etc. An exotic en-US bird will live much longer than en-US a Great Dane, for example. So, en-US type of pet, their lifespan, their en-US food and their health are all en-US things to be considered when en-US setting money aside.en-US Mel Stack is an attorney in en-US Daytona Beach, who is also en-US president of the Halifax en-US Humane Society Board of en-US Directors.en-US He said, A lot of my clients en-US are animal lovers. Many times, en-US their dog or en-UScat is the most en-US important person in their en-US lives, they think of them as a en-US person because it is a member en-US of their family. What is going en-US to happen to them if you are en-US suddenly gone?en-US He emphasized you have to en-US select a caregiver, and be aware en-US animal care is not cheap and, en-US as pets get older, costs will en-US increase because of vet bills en-US and all their needs. At a minien-US -en-US mum, he recommends at least en-US $5,000 be set aside in trust, en-US which obvioen-US usly can vary en-US depending on all the factors.en-US What it comes down to is en-US you are entrusting your family en-US members life with someone en-US else, Mr. Stack said. That is en-US how important that decision en-US is. You need to leave enough en-US money so you are not saddling en-US the Good Samaritan who is en-US taking your animal in to love en-US and care for them. Make sure en-US they are provided for.en-US He said the only way to en-US overturn a provision in a will en-US or trust ien-US sen-US if the person is en-US deemed incompetent, if the en-US document wasnt signed in the en-US presence of at least two witen-US -en-US nesses, or if it determined you en-US were pressured into it. Ones en-US wishes must be in writing, en-US however.en-US If you create the trust to take en-US effect while you are alive, you en-US fund the trust like any other en-US trust; with money or other en-US property. If you create the trust en-US in your will, you can also use en-US assets from life insurance, en-US retirement plans, payable on en-US death accounts, and other conen-US-en-US tracts. In both cases, you name en-US a trusted person or animal en-US shelter as the caregiver for en-US your pet. They just en-US spend more on advertising en-US and outreach to attract more en-US tourists and conventions. en-US That, in turn, will create more en-US opportunities for development en-US of new hotels and restaurants, en-US and help improve the econoen-US -en-US my.en-US For the county, which uses en-US its half for the bonded en-US indebtedness, operation and en-US maintenance of the Ocean en-US Center, its a little different. It en-US only costs so much to operate en-US and maintain the countys en-US largest center for conventions, en-US sports, concerts and other en-US events. It could spend more on en-US promoting the Ocean Center, en-US but why do that when you en-US already have the tourism en-US promotion boards spending en-US money convention promoen-US -en-US tion?en-US So, why not do something en-US that will help in a different en-US way. Right now, the county is en-US paying about $4.5 million a en-US year to pay off the bond issue en-US that paid for expanding the en-US Ocean Center, and bonds en-US issued in 2014 to pay off part en-US of that to lock in an interest en-US rate of 3.5 percent. The expanen-US-en-US sion worked and the center is en-US now attracting more events en-US than ever since it can actually en-US handle three events at once en-US one in the arena, one in the en-US convention hall and one in the en-US exhibition hall.en-US The county collected about en-US $10 million in the fiscal year en-US just ended Sept. 30. While I en-US havent looked closely into the en-US finances of the Ocean Center en-US and didnt get an immediate en-US answer to the question I posed en-US to the county managers office, en-US it would seem paying off the en-US bonds soonen-US er would be a good en-US idea. The rest of the original en-US bond will be paid off in 2022 en-US while the newer bonds will be en-US paid off in 2035, but if you en-US paid them off sooner, the en-US money could be used to pay en-US for something that is critical en-US in the Ocean Center area en-US another parking building.en-US The core beachside area is en-US more popular than ever with en-US the Ocean Center, Peabody en-US Auditorium, Ocean Walk en-US Shoppes, the Bandshell, en-US Boardwalk and Pier attracting en-US more peen-US ople than ever. en-US However, a lot more people en-US probably would come if they en-US werent turned off by the lack en-US of parking. The construction en-US of a Marriott hotel just south en-US of the Hilton also will take en-US away parking. en-US Whether its just the county en-US or a county-city partnership, en-US another parking garage is en-US going to be a desperate need.en-US ***en-US We were on a short week en-US here at Hometown News, so en-US not a lot else en-US to report, but en-US here are a few notes. A en-US Wisconsin-based entity, Silver en-US Creek Properties, has bought en-US the ARNI Foundation en-US property at 600 Mason Ave. in en-US Daytona Beach for $1.25M. en-US Dayton, Ohio, investors have en-US bought the car wash at the en-US corner of Madeline Avenue en-US and Nova Road in Port en-US Orange for $600,000. A-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USOen-USnce again, the holidays en-US are upon us! en-USThat makes it a great en-US time to review some everyday en-US safety precautions. Of course, en-US these tips are applicable at any en-US time of the year, but they are en-US particularly relevant during en-US the holiday shopping season. en-US 1. Lock your car! This is so en-US basic, but some people still en-US dont do it. During a rash of en-US car break-ins in Ormond en-US Beach in June, 34 of the 37 en-US burglarized cars had been left en-US unlocked. en-US 2. Ladies, when driving, en-US keep your purse behind your en-US seat or on the floorboard on en-US the passenger side of your car. en-US A purse on the front passenger en-US seat is an easy target for a en-US smash and grab. Also, when en-US shopping, never leave your en-US purse in a cart unattended. en-US Consider buying a crossbody en-US bag -a purse that crosses en-US your shoulder and rests in en-US front of your body. Its harder en-US to pickpocket or steal.en-US 3. Stay alert in parking lots en-US and, if shopping in the en-US evening, always park in a en-US well-lit area. If you see en-US anything suspicious, return to en-US the store or mall for assisen-US -en-US tance. Before entering your en-US car, always check the backseat. en-US After entering your car, if you en-US notice a flyer under your en-US windshield wiper, dont get en-US out. Drive to a safe place en-US before removing it.en-US 4. Place all gift bags in the en-US trunk of your car, out of sight. en-US If you have an SUV, a cargo en-US cover is a great investment. en-US Avoid placing bags in your car en-US and returning to the store for en-US more shopping. Someone en-US could be watching you.en-US 5. Avoid carrying more cash en-US or credit cards than you will en-US need. Leave the rest at home.en-US 6. There is safety in numen-US -en-US bers. Bring a friend with you!en-US How about shopping safely en-US online? Here are a few things en-US to remember:en-US 7. Make certain the website en-US you are accessing is legitimate. en-US Is it a trusted site? Have you en-US purchased from them before? en-US Fake websites may offer en-US outstanding prices, but your en-US name and credit card number en-US can be stolen for merchandise en-US that doesnt even exist.en-US 8. Use credit cards for en-US purchases online. If a credit en-US card is compromised, report it en-US immediately. You are not en-US liable for the charges while the en-US card company investigates en-US your case. Using a debit card en-US online can be dangerous; a en-US perpetrator who steals your en-US information can quickly en-US empty the account linked to en-US that card.en-US 9. When ordering online, en-US make sure you see a padlock en-US icon and a browser URL en-US address that starts with en-US https://. These are signs of SSL en-US data encryption.en-US 10. Avoid shopping over en-US public Wi-Fi. Though it might en-US be convenient to place orders en-US while sipping a latte at your en-US favorien-US te coffee shop, someone en-US three tables over might be en-US monitoring your every en-US keystroke! Without the use of en-US a VPN (Virtual Private en-US Network), your data can be at en-US risk!en-US One of the surest ways to en-US have a happy holiday is to stay en-US safe and keep your money, en-US purchases and identity secure. en-US Keep these tips in mind and en-US enjoy the start of the 2018 en-US holiday season!en-US David D. S. 1, there is en-US a nice natural ramp perfect for en-US launching a kayak. This is a en-US place the Green Peanut and I en-US know well since it was the first en-US place we fished together just en-US about six years ago. en-US Back then it was seldom en-US used, but, since I began to en-US write about it, the place has en-US become a busy fishing spot. I en-US see people fishing from the en-US shore, wading and, of course, en-US casting from a kayak. en-US I suppose most of them en-US catch a few fish, but there is a en-US glaring mistake that those en-US anglers make. This is early en-US fishing. If you are not there en-US pre-dawn, your chances will en-US drop dramatically. I realize en-US fishing early is an often en-US repeated mantra of mine, but en-US at Sleepy Hollow it is not a en-US suggestion. It is a rule. en-US With the time change, I had en-US to leave the house early in en-US order to make the 45-minute en-US drive and still arrive in the en-US dark. As I began to paddle, I en-US could hear splashing around en-US the two big oyster bars that are en-US just off shore. I was pretty sure en-US it was undersized snook en-US feeding and my third cast en-US proved it. A scrappy little en-US 16-inch line-sider hit my red en-US and white MirrOlure and en-US came to the net after a good en-US fight.en-US Moving straight east I had a en-US couple hits on my top water en-US lure, but nothing stuck. All en-US around me I could hear larger en-US snook bashing the mullet, but en-US none would take my plug. en-US After about a hundred yards, I en-US navigated the small opening en-US that put me into a wide creek en-US running north and south.en-US Since it was still dark, I en-US decided to stay with the en-US MirrOlure. This place was en-US quieter than where I had en-US begun. Not as many oysters en-US and fewer fish splashing the en-US surface. As the first light en-US began to show, it looked as en-US though I was deep into a en-US swamp, but I could still hear en-US the traffic on the nearby en-US highway. en-US Now I began to see wakes en-US from big fish that were en-US moving about. Before long I en-US felt a jerk of the rod and was en-US on with a 20-inch snook. A en-US nice fish that jumped twice en-US during the battle. Next I en-US caught one that was only en-US about 10 inches and maybe en-US twice as long as the Miren-US -en-US rOlure. Game fish, those en-US snook. en-US After that, everything went en-US still with full morning light. en-US Nothing hitting, nothing en-US moving, but they couldnt fool en-US me. I knew those sneaky en-US snook were still there. I en-US switched to my old dependen-US -en-US able chartreuse shrimp tail jig. en-US On my fifth cast, a big fish en-US nailed it and my mono sizzled en-US off at a right angle. The run en-US seemed to go on forever with en-US me trying to keep my line out en-US of the bushes and away from en-US the oysters. When I pulled en-US back hard, the fish tried to en-US jump, but it was too fat to en-US clear the water. I did see en-US enough to know I was on with en-US a nice 30-inch snook. I was in en-US no hurry to land this one and en-US allowed it to play itself out en-US after several runs. Finally it en-US laid up alongside the kayak en-US and I was able to release the en-US fish without ever touching it. en-US It lounged there for a while en-US still tired and not knowing it en-US was free before a splash of its en-US tail sent it sprinting away.en-US Folks, remember if you en-US want to fish Sleepy Hollow, get en-US there early. I loaded my boat at en-US 8:30 a.m. to head home. My en-US chartreuse jig had scored once en-US more and, if you want one, en-US Granada Bait and Tackle at the en-US west end of the Ormond en-US Beach bridge now has them. en-US Give em a try. Fish cant resist en-US them. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. B-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USNen-USow I know why they call en-US it Black Friday. en-USDid you know it all en-US started around 1950 in en-US Philadelen-US phia? The annual en-US Army/Navy game is played in en-US Philadelphia on the Saturday en-US after Thanksgiving. Many en-US people froen-US m the suburbs en-US would come to the city on en-US Friday in anticipation of the en-US game. en-US The cen-USities retailers decided en-US to have large discount sales to en-US entice shoppers. The large en-US crowds of people shopping en-US and attendees of the game en-US overwhelmed the local law en-US enforcement to control traffic. en-US Large crowds in stores also en-US attracted shoplifters taking en-US advantage of the bedlam in en-US stores. en-US By1961, the term Black en-US Friday caught on in the en-US nation. Today everyone en-US considers it a great sale day en-US lasting up to four days, but it is en-US also the slowest restaurant day en-US of the year. Everyone is en-US shopping, not going out to eat. en-US Yes, more than 200 million en-US people will take advantage of en-US the savings. All 200 million, en-US except me. en-US OK, I know everyone loves en-US Black Friday and all the en-US special buys. But why did I en-US pay $45.39 for a gallon of en-US milk. Let me explain. I get up en-US every morning at 5 a.m.; cant en-US help myself just a habit of en-US years of going to work early in en-US restaurants. This particular en-US morning I decided to treat my en-US family to French toast and en-US noticed we had used all the en-US milk on Thanksgiving Day. en-US No big deal. I would run to en-US Walmart down the street, en-US which is open 24 hours and en-US get right back. BIG MISTAKE. en-US I pulled into the parking lot en-US as I have so many times before en-US at this time and was surprised en-US at the number of cars in the en-US lot. I noticed people with three en-US and four carts full of merchanen-US -en-US dise loading their cars. en-US Hmmm, must be a special en-US early bird sale of some kind. en-US You guessed it, Im not a en-US Black Friday shopper and will en-US never be again. I entered the en-US store on the food side and got en-US swept up in a crowd of people en-US going down the main isle. en-US Instead of food that is usually en-US displayed, there was everyen-US -en-US thing but food. I managed to en-US get to the back of the store en-US where the milk was stored and en-US grabbed a gallon. en-US I headed back into the mob en-US to try and cash out. Thats en-US when I found myself in front en-US of a table with some kind of en-US electronic games. I picked it en-US up and people were trying to en-US take it out of my hand. I held en-US on to it as if it were gold, not en-US knowing what it was. I made it en-US to the cashier and my bill en-US came to $45.39. I was too en-US embarrassed to say anything, en-US so I just paid and left. en-US When I got home, my wife en-US asked me why I bought a en-US childrens electronic frog en-US game. I played it cool and said, en-US Oh I thought it would be nice en-US to give it to Toys for Tots. en-US Please dont tell her . I made en-US the French toast for breakfast en-US with my $45.39 gallon of milk en-US and promised myself I would en-US never go shopping on Black en-US Friday again, its too expenen-US -en-US sive. en-US Try this French toast recipe; en-US youll love it. I suggest you buy en-US a cheaper milk.en-USFrench Custard Toasten-USIngredientsen-US 5 large eggsen-US 1 teaspoon sugar, optionalen-US Dash salten-US 1 cup milken-US 5 slices white bread 1 en-US inch thicken-US 1 tablespoon butteren-US 1 tablespoon butternut en-US extractsen-US cup powdered sugaren-US 1 tablespoon cinnamonen-US Preparationen-US Break eggs into a wide, en-US shallow bowl; beat lightly with en-US a fork. Soak or coat only en-US as many slices as you will be en-US cooking at one time. Transfer en-US bread slices to griddle or en-US skillet, heating slowly until en-US bottom is golden brown. en-US Sprinkle with cinnamon, turn en-US and brown on the other side. en-US Sprinkle again.
