en-USCorporate headquarters en-US takes a step downtownen-USBrown and Brown new corporate headquarters en-US took another step as the Daytona Beach Planning en-US Board members gave unanimous support to the en-US companys request to rezone 14 acres of land in the en-US 300 block of North Beach Street to a planned develen-US-en-US opment. en-US The request, made on behalf of Brown & Brown en-US by attorney Robert A. Merrell III, already received en-US unanimous approval by the Daytona Beach Downen-US -en-US town Redevelopment Board Aug. 7. A majority vote en-US by the planning board was needed to send the meaen-US-en-US sure to the City Commission.en-US Reed Berger, city redevelopment director, said the en-US area was always slated for developing something sigen-US-en-US nificant. en-US The planned development includes removen-US -en-US ing 10 historic live oaks, but replacing them en-US with larger trees, Mr. Berger said. It also en-US allows for large signage. There were two en-US neighborhood meetings on this particular en-US project.en-US This is a first class, 10-story office builden-US -en-US ing with roughly 37 million taxable en-US improvements, its a world headquarters, and one en-US that will be adding an estimated 625 jobs, he said. en-US The total includes the folks who are already here en-US locally working, thats 900 jobs to be on this camen-US -en-US pus. en-US Brown & Brown also is acting as a catalyst to en-US attract more businesses.en-US Mr. Berger noted a number of other companies en-US are en-US considering coming en-US to downtown Daytona Beach to be a part en-US of the live, work and play destination mentality. en-US Board member Jeff Hurt stated property prices en-US are already increasing downtown with just the idea en-US the company is coming. He noted other already en-USZoes Policy is one step en-US closer to approval by the en-US Volusia County School en-US Board. en-US I commend the board for en-US trying and thinking of puten-US -en-US ting a policy in place. Its very en-US courageous, said J.J. Adams en-US of Edgewater, whose daughen-US -en-US ter, Zoe, suffers from a termien-US -en-US nal illness and benefits from en-US the use of medical marijuana. en-US About four months ago I en-US went to a funeral home to en-US prepare for my daughters en-US passing. No man should have en-US to do that but thats the en-US reality we are facing. Its ineven-US -en-US itable.en-US His daughters quality of en-US life has improved in the last en-US four months with the use of en-US medical marijuana, Mr. en-US Adams told school board en-US members at the regular meeten-US -en-US ing Sept. 25 in DeLand.en-US Instead of declining, her en-US life is getting drastically beten-US -en-US ter because of this, he said. en-US You guys could lead this en-US fight out of Central Florida. en-US You could be the third school en-US system in the state to do this.en-US Board members unanien-US-en-US mously voted to advertise a en-US potential policy, with three en-US amendments to the draft and en-US on the condition of a special en-US name change. en-US Proposed Policy 2018-218 en-US is now Zoes Policy, and, the en-US unanimous vote to advertise en-US suggests school board memen-US -en-US bers intend to make Volusia en-US County the third district in en-US the state to allow caregivers en-US to administer medical marien-US-en-US juana to qualified students en-US on school grounds.en-US State law requires school en-US boards to have a policy en-USSchools move en-US closer to allowing en-US medical marijuana en-USNewen-US business en-US helps en-US pizza en-US shopsen-USRyan Paiva and some en-US friends wanted some pizza en-US one night and wound up geten-US-en-US ting a greaen-US t business idea en-US delivered.en-US Mr. Paiva and his en-US co-founders created Pizzamen-US-en-US ico, which translates to pizza en-US friend.en-US Their company works with en-US restaurants around Central en-US Florida, and virtually anyen-US -en-US where, on online branding en-US and website management.en-US Pizzamico offers website en-US design free with free continen-US -en-US ual upgrades and ongoing en-US management en-US with no monthen-US -en-US ly contract. The only cost to en-US business owners is Pizzamico en-US retains a small percentage on en-US each online order. Websites en-US can be launched in as little as en-US 48 hours. en-US The goal of the company is en-US to promote and help local en-US restaurants, and the en-US better en-US they do, the more successful en-US Pizzamico becomes.en-US About two years ago, Ray, en-US Marc, myself and Hala were en-US working late one night and en-US ordered some pizza from a en-US local pizzeria, Mr. Paiva en-US said. We ran a web developen-US -en-US ment firm. The men-US anager en-US delivered it himself. He saw en-US we were in a tech place and en-US wanted to learn a little bit en-US more about what we were en-US doing. He came and he said en-US we need help. Ien-US dont feel like en-US we are keeping up with techen-US -en-US nology.en-US We did some research en-US and there was no one specialen-US-en-US izing in pizzerias, he said. en-US There are a handful of comen-US -en-US panies buildinen-US g their compaen-US-en-US ny brand, but no one is tryen-US -en-US ing to build their (private en-US pizzeria) brand, tell their en-US story, take pictures of their en-US food, really put them out en-US there.en-US A series of interviews and en-US research began in summer en-US 2016 to determine the feasien-US -en-US bility of developing a high-en-US tech system to help one small en-US independent pizza shop en-US (Luigis, which became Gaeen-US -en-US tanos) and ultimately others. en-US The staff volunteered at varien-US-en-US ous restaurants earlier this en-US Photo by Diane Careyen-USThe staff at Pizzamico stand outside their new office. For those en-US who cant make a phone call, en-US the Volusia County Sheriffs en-US Department is rolling out Text en-US to 911.en-US There are instances where a en-US text message to 911 could be a en-US life-saving alternative. en-US Texting during an emeren-US -en-US gency could be helpful if you en-US are deaf, hearing impaired, en-US have a speech disability, or if a en-US voice call to 911 might be danen-US -en-US gerous or impossible, en-USPreserving historyen-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USNancy Long, president of Heritage Preservation Trust, makes sure everyen-US -en-US thing is in place for the Lilian Place Treasure Sale in Daytona Beach on Frien-US-en-US day, Sept. 28. As this progresses, en-US there will be more and more en-US and more and more of undeen-US -en-US sirable buildings that are going en-US to come down and we are en-US going to see them replaced en-US with other stuff.en-US Mr. Merrell said, This is en-US what needed to happen. We en-US needed something really big. It en-US is going to change everything, en-US not just for that project. It is a en-US beautifully done architectural en-US building. New sidewalks, new en-US pedestrian opportunities, en-US architecture, landscaping, and en-US more. All of the landscaping en-US that we are going to be using en-US will be upsized. Everything en-US will be above the code. We are en-US going to be mitigating way en-US beyond what we are required en-US to do. Leave it to the Browns to en-US one up everybody in every en-US aspect of this. en-US He estimated the project en-US completion date as July 2020. en-US Jim Cameron, representing en-US the Daytona Regional Chamen-US -en-US ber of Commerce, spoke in en-US favor of the project.en-US We want to go on record in en-US support of this project, Mr. en-US Cameron said. This will be a en-US positive change. A 10-story en-US office building in this area will en-US significantly enhance property en-US values. Its already improving en-US the property values in this en-US area. en-US He also noted Hyatt Brown, en-US company chairman, and his en-US wife, Cici, en-USare donated $15 en-US million to improve Riverfront en-US Park.en-US In other planning board en-US business, a small-scale comen-US -en-US prehensive plan amendment en-US was approved for 3.7 acres of en-US land at 1401 Beville Road for en-US the creation of a 7-11 store. en-US Also, approval was given to en-US modify the building design, en-US add a phasing schedule and en-US extend the timetable for develen-US -en-US opment of the Islamic Center en-US at 825 Derbyshire Road. City en-US Commission approval is still en-US needed. en-US The Brown and Brown en-US request is tentatively scheden-US -en-US uled to be hearden-US by the City en-US Commission for first reading en-US on Oct. 17 and for second en-US reading Nov. 7.en-US before allowing dispensing of en-US medical marijuana on school en-US grounds.en-US The are five areas we have en-US to address: how the medical en-US marijuana will be received by en-US the student, how it will be en-US accounted for, how it will be en-US stored, and establish a process en-US to prevent access by other stuen-US -en-US dents, District General en-US Counsel Michael Deyer said, en-US adding the Volusia policy en-US uses the Santa Rosa County en-US policy as a guideline.en-US The policy allows a parent, en-US who is a caregiver, to have en-US access to the school, to meet en-US privately with their child and en-US to administer it to their child, en-US Mr. Dyer said. School en-US administrators would not be en-US involved and the medical en-US marijuana would not be en-US stored on school property.en-US Prior to the vote, board en-US members requested three en-US amendments to the original en-US draft, along with the name en-US change to Zoes Policy: deleten-US -en-US ing section III A-1, which en-US stated medical marijuana en-US could not be given on school en-US grounds unless the marijuaen-US -en-US na cannot reasonably be en-US administered outside of en-US school hours and off district en-US property; and adding a manen-US -en-US datory five school day notice en-US period to parents of en-US MMJ-prescribed students in en-US the event the policy is susen-US -en-US pended.en-US School board members en-US expressed support for the polen-US -en-US icy and a measure of pride in en-USdoing what they called the en-US right thing.en-US Im totally in favor of this en-US policy and of us moving foren-US -en-US ward. They researched 20-30 en-US pizza places in Volusia County. en-US He emphasized how online en-US orders decrease mistakes vs. en-US orders called in by telephone.en-US The biggest problem we are en-US able to help them with is keepen-US -en-US ing up with technology, Mr. en-US Paiva said. Lots of people en-US offer websites, but not websites en-US that will also handle the online en-US ordering and really promote en-US their brand. en-US Most consumers have en-US moved towards placing their en-US orders online, he said. All en-US these independent restaurants en-US that might be a generation en-US behind on technology are en-US missing out on customers. We en-US are looking to get customers en-US that are going to be loyal to en-US them.en-US When people go to a weben-US -en-US site, they will read all about en-US that individual business, not en-US Pizzamico, even though Pizen-US-en-US zamico creates and maintains en-US the websites. en-US They already have great en-US food, we are just helping them en-US out with the technology, Mr. en-US Paiva said. The en-US first non-pizza restaurant sites en-US are launching soon and feature en-US restaurants in Volusia County, en-US Georgia and New Jersey. That en-US was never so obvious as when en-US a recent government scientific en-US expedition revealed a previen-US -en-US ously unknown coral reef that en-US sits in a half mile of ocean 162 en-US miles off the coast of Charlesen-US -en-US ton, S.C. en-US This massive reef is 85 miles en-US in length and has mountains en-US as high as 300 feet jutting up en-US from the bottom of the en-US Atlantic. That discovery was en-US made using submersibles and en-US dive teams that explored from en-US Virginia south to Georgia. en-USThe researchers at first en-US believed the peaks in the reef en-US to be rock formations covered en-US in a thin layer of coral, but en-US have now come to understand en-US the undersea mountains are en-US made up entirely of lophelia en-US coral. The sheer size of the en-US thing is amazing enough, but en-US for it to remain undiscovered en-US all these years is unimagen-US -en-US inable. en-US It also is unusual to find en-US such a reef so far from any en-US land mass and makes us en-US wonder how many more reefs en-US are yet to be discovered. It just en-US further demonstrates how en-US little we know about our en-US world. en-US This story amazes me for as en-US I am writing it I know the en-US federal government is en-US preparing for more exploratoen-US -en-US ry missions into deep space. en-US Wouldnt you think it would en-US make more sense to first try en-US and learn all there is to know en-US about Earth?en-US Right now Floridas coral en-US reefs are dying at an alarming en-US rate and no one really knows en-US why. Locally our waterways en-US are in terrible shape and en-US steadily declining. There are en-US no answers and no fix in sight. en-US Universities from across the en-US nation have sent teams to en-US investigate what is wrong with en-US our fragile Mosquito Lagoon, en-US but so far the results have been en-US useless. en-US Those of you who read my en-US fishing columns know I prefer en-US to mostly skip the scientific en-US input and put my trust in the en-US old fishermen when it comes en-US to answering questions about en-US water problems. To my way of en-US thinking, no college degree en-US can match a lifetime on the en-US water. en-US Not long ago I had the en-US opportunity to speak to a salty en-US elder statesman. Without any en-US prompting from me he began en-US to tell me about the commeren-US -en-US cial shrimping enterprises that en-US worked the Halifax River in en-US the 1940s and early s. He en-US said there had been at least en-US eight companies that en-US shrimped the river daily all en-US year long, but that all came to en-US an end when the big causeway en-US was built at Dunlawton en-US Avenue in Port Orange. en-US As I have said many times, en-US the flow of our rivers is en-US reduced with each new bridge en-US built. Undoubtedly that is hapen-US -en-US pening right now on Orange en-US Avenue. The state does not en-US force the contractor to haul en-US away all of the excavated en-US material it takes to build those en-US large pilings that hold up the en-US bridge. Each time the tidal en-US flow is restricted. Right now en-US there is polluted runoff in the en-US Halifax that has been trapped en-US there since January. You can work minimum wage anywhere.en-US Also, now we need to consider who is crossing our borders en-US from the north and what do they bring with them?en-USOpen up the poolen-USWe, as members of the Edgewater Y, are frustrated and disapen-US -en-US pointed again, as in the past couple of years with regards to the en-US closing of the swimming pool. en-US It gets closed earlier every year (late September) and then en-US reopens at a later calendar date (late April) in the following year. en-US This is Florida and the swimming pool is actually open for only en-US five to six months and closed for six to seven months with the en-US temperatures in the 80s and 90s. en-US Management at the Y states that we can go to the Port Orange en-US Y, which is very inconvenient and about 35 miles round trip, as if en-US thats a consolation. We pay the same membership fee as Port en-US Orange Y and Ormond Beach Y members and we have less use en-US of the facility. Their pools are open year-round and heated.en-USDevelopment finds the back roadsen-USThe development in Ormond Beach has gotten way out of en-US control. en-US Most recently a quiet little back road has come under the en-US assault of clear cutting of trees to make way for more houses or en-US business. Once completed, it will be a thoroughfare for just what en-US we need -more traffic. Because it is a back road, this scarring of en-US the land is going unnoticed except for the few who use this back en-US road. I am talking about Pineland Trail Road, north of Airport en-US Road. en-US So many trees have been cut down and so much land cleared en-US they called in logging trucks. It is alarming to see these fully en-US loaded logging trucks lumbering down this once quiet back en-US road.en-US Soon Ormond Beach will be overpopulated and congested as en-US bad or worse than Daytona Beach or Port Orange. Does anyone en-US want that ?en-US People need to take action to stem this tide. Elections are en-US coming up and their appear to be candidates who oppose this en-US type of growth. Get informed and choose wisely people or it will en-US be too late. Uncontrolled growth like we are seeing is bad for the en-US people, great for the wealthy who dont give a damn about you or en-US me.en-USHistoric oak treesen-US en-USRemember when the Hampton Inn was built, the graduate en-US arborist, who was employed by New Smyrna Beach, flagged two en-US or three historic oak trees where the Hampton Inn was to be en-US built.en-US The building plans showed the building being built with those en-US trees removed, even though they were marked as historic oaks. en-US Shortly thereafter, the arborist resigned and by some quirk those en-US trees were removed. They were not diseased. They were not en-US infected with bugs. They were just removed. en-US On top of that, the Hampton Inn was suppose to come up en-US with 27 additional parking spaces, which are now located across en-US the street and the city taxpayers pay for that month by month en-US parking lease for the Hampton Inn. Isnt it about time the Hampen-US -en-US ton Inn pays for those parking spots?en-USUplifting presenceen-USSeveral weeks ago, I found myself in the emergency room en-US with my 95-year-old mother, when I realized I was not going to en-US be able to pick up something I had ordered from Peggys Whole en-US Foods in Ormond Beach. en-US I called Peggys. To my delight, rather than being concerned en-US about me not being able to pick up my order, they asked about en-US my mother and started praying for her right then on the phone. en-US This was wonderful. Even the nurses were impressed. en-US Kudos to Peggys Whole Food for being a wonderful and en-US uplifting presence in our town. It was lovely. en-USIn response to: Enforce these rulesen-USI agree with the enforce or eliminate rant. en-US Some beachgoers, especially on the weekend, ignore the beach en-US rules. Not only do they ignore the rules in the rant, they also en-US bring dogs to the no dog beach and blast loud music on speakers en-US mounted on their vehicles. en-US I suggest we charge non-residents $150 per beach pass and use en-US the extra money to hire beach patrol officers who will enforce en-US the beach rules.en-USGet checked now!en-USOctober is here and soon we will be inundated with happy en-US images of women in pink, walking 5Ks across the country, to en-US support Breast Cancer Awareness month.en-US Sadly, one out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast en-US cancer. My sister was one of them. She missed her mammogram en-US for three years due to a change in jobs, and no health care. (Prior en-US to our current health care options.) She got a mammogram at en-US age 49, and died at 55 (she lived longer than the 95th percentile en-US for advanced breast cancer). en-US I am now 56, and I am her younger sister by three years. Dont en-US walk, run to get checked. No health insurance? Thankfully, there en-US are organizations who provide this service for free. en-US Another good friend, a marathon runner, vegan, surf-loving en-US girl, did not feel well. She went to her doctor. Male or female, young or old, your life en-US matters. en-USIn response to: Save the treesen-USI agree with saving the live oak trees. The are beautiful when en-US they are pruned. en-US They also have a large spread root system that can take on any en-US flooding, The roots system keep the soil in place during a flood. en-US They bear the brunt of the wind during a hurricane and have en-US protected my house. In addition, my electric bill is $70 cheaper en-US than my neighbors because I have a large one on the south side en-US of my house. en-US Live oaks should be planted, not torn down, especially with en-US rising water levels. en-USShrink the cardsen-USTo all the candidates running for public office, please disconen-US -en-US tinue your large cards. en-US Some of us have small mailboxes. They camp on the en-US same median strips, and litter them with mounds and mounds of en-US garbage. They step out into the traffic lanes and stop traffic. en-US They create a public nuisance and a traffic hazard, and yet the en-US local police will do absolutely nothing as they seem to have more en-US rights than taxpaying motorists do. There are laws on the books en-US regarding the interference with traffic, yet nothing gets done to en-US stop them. What will it take? en-USCooler roads prevailen-USWhy is it some of the roads are paved with a light colored en-US asphalt mix and Nova Road was just blacktopped? en-US Dont the roads get hot enough around here? Is it that much en-US cheaper to pave the road with blacktop? We pay plenty in taxes. en-US Any little thing to cool things off here helps, like shade, lighter en-US colored roadways and select clearing of shade trees during conen-US -en-US struction. What are these builders thinking of other than profit? en-US Its time people started to wake up and speak up. It is later than en-US you think, folks say something. Do something. Before its all en-US blacktopped.en-USFree the sidewalksen-USI have been a Port Orange resident for 30 years. en-US In my neighborhood, there have been three barriers for sideen-US -en-US walks up for over a year and a I am really upset about this. This is my pride and joy. You didnt even en-US have the common decency to come see me. Well, all I can say is en-US the Lord knows who did it and karma will take care of you. en-USReflection neededen-USThe corner of Hand Avenue and Clyde Morris Boulevard en-US needs help. en-US Ive tried before to find someone to do something about the en-US lighting at that intersection with no results. The biggest problem en-US is driving west on Hand and turning left onto Clyde Morris. It is en-US very difficult to see the side roads, the median on left and the en-US curb on the right, especially for us seniors.en-US All that is really needed is some reflective paint and/or tape to en-US show the lines. The new construction on LPGA has this tape/en-US paint and works beautifully. How can we get this done at Hand en-US and Clyde Morris? en-USNo so good newsen-USThe en-US Hometown Newsen-US puts on the front page as the headline en-US Daytona airport goes international for the first time in 20 years. en-US This is good news? Not everyone en-US wants to own a three-beden-US -en-US room, two-bath house with an en-US attached garage and two cats en-US in the yard. Some people like en-US mayonnaise on their peanut en-US butter sandwich. I dont judge.en-US But anyway, in that climate, en-US Capital Apartment Group has en-US acquired the Venetian en-US apartments site in the 3000 en-US block of South Ridgewood en-US Avenue in South Daytona for en-US $4.5 million and is getting all en-US the permits changed over to en-US its ownership so it can begin en-US construction. The original en-US developer had a great idea, but en-US apparently not the financial en-US strength needed to build the en-US apartment complex. Still, he en-US obviously ben-US elieves in that area, en-US because he used the money to en-US buy the condo site just up the en-US street and across from Sandy en-US Point Progressive Sports for en-US $1.65 million.en-US So, how hot is the housing en-US market in Volusia County? en-US Realtors in the Volusia/Flagler en-US area sold 1,147 existing houses en-US in August, up 14.2 percent en-US from August 2017. The en-US median price, where half sold en-US for more and half for less, was en-US at $213,250, up 7.7 percent. en-US The Realtors sold 334 condos en-US in August, up 3.1 percent from en-US August 2017. The median en-US price was at $214,500, up 7.8 en-US percent.en-US Builders in Volusia/Flagler en-US obtained permits for 250 new en-US housing unen-USits (236 single-famen-US -en-US ily) in August, with 64 percent en-US of the area reporting to the en-US U.S. Census Bureau, compared en-US to 201 (187 single-family) in en-US August 2017 with 70 percent en-US of the area reen-US porting.en-US So, a lot of people are en-US buying houses, but what about en-US the multi-family market? Well, en-US New England real estate develen-US -en-US oper and investor Christopher en-US C. That was for just 384 en-US apartments, making the en-US purchase price about $96,000 en-US a unit.en-US U.S. 1 definitely could use en-US some reen-US development through en-US Volusia County. The City of en-US Port Orange was doing its part en-US with its new Riverwalk Park, en-US which is just down the street en-US from the Venetian apartments. en-US Brown & Browns plans for a en-US corporate headquarters will en-US push rebuilding in downtown en-US Daytona out to U.S. 1. en-US Ormond Crossings, where en-US Security First Insurances en-US headquarters is going up, will en-US help that section of U.S. 1. P en-USlanStronger readers, who en-US pay close attention to local en-US print advertising, might en-US already know my public en-US television program, PlanStronen-US -en-US gerTV, has just entered a new en-US season. en-USThere are several reasons en-US why the filming of these most en-US receen-US nt shows is so exciting: 1. en-US We have a beautiful, new, en-US modern set; 2. The program en-US has an updated format, with en-US shorter segments, audience en-US interaction and more guests; en-US And, 3. The program will now en-US be offered to public broadcasten-US -en-US ing stations nationwide! To en-US watch one of the new shows, en-US tune in to Channel 15 on en-US Sunday at 7 p.m. (previous en-US seasons shows will air at 7 en-US p.m. Monday through Friday). en-US I tell you this as a lead-in to en-US a subject inspired by one of en-US my first guest interviews of en-US the new season. Mr. Don en-US Blandin joined me to talk en-US about a very important topic en-US investor exploitation. Don is en-US the CEOen-US and president of en-US Investor Protection Trust, a en-US consumer advocacy organizaen-US -en-US tion that educates and informs en-US consumers on investing.en-US Who is vulnerable? Finanen-US -en-US cial exploitation is alive and en-US well. Anyone, at any age, can en-US be a victim, but those espeen-US -en-US cially at risk are over age 65. en-US Why? This age group has the en-US most wealth! Also, scammers en-US are well aware some people en-US may not be as sharp as when en-US they were younger. This en-US makes our senior population en-US an appealing target.en-US When should alarms go off? en-US Its important to know some of en-US the warning signs of a en-US (potentially) bad investment/en-US financial scam. Here are a few en-US questions to ask yourself: 1. Is en-US there a big rush to sell me the en-US investment (is the offer en-US time-sensitive)? Am I being en-US pressured to make a quick en-US decision? 2. Have I been en-US promised a large return en-US much better than any return en-US from a bank? 3. Am I being en-US told there is no risk involved? en-US If you answered yes to any, en-US or all, of these questions, slow en-US down, step back and do some en-US investigative work before en-US making any decisions.en-US What to do? To help avoid en-US scamen-US s, you need to check the en-US background of the person en-US offering the investment. And, en-US dont drop your guard if the en-US person is a relative. A large en-US percentage of financial en-US exploitation cases are commiten-US -en-US ted by family members! en-US Research the product/en-US investment as well. Consider en-US information provided by your en-US state securities regulator (an en-US agency that works to protect en-US investors as it maintains the en-US integrity of the securities en-US industry). You might also en-US consult with a trusted friend, en-US or, better yet, get a second en-US opinion from a financial en-US professional. en-US Are you concerned? If you en-US think an elderly neighbor or en-US relative is being taken en-US advantage of, financially, you en-US might notice depression or a en-US withdrawal from normal en-US social activities. A en-US conversaen-US-en-US tion with his/her physician en-US might be in order. Some en-US doctors are now screening en-US patients for signs of stress and en-US duress (a possible indication en-US of financial difficulties, en-US manipulation or pressure en-US from outside sources). You en-US can also contaen-US ct the aforemenen-US -en-US tioned state securities regulaen-US -en-US tor and/or adult protective en-US services.en-US This is a broad topic, and, en-US unfortunately, Im unable to en-US cover everything in one en-US column. Not so. Each breath en-US warmed my nostrils and en-US heated my lungs as would a en-US blast from a furnace. en-US As I paddled the Green en-US Peanut past the dark silhouen-US -en-US ettes of stunted trees, I had to en-US smile. Only years of ocean en-US winds and salt can twist the en-US forest in that manner. The tree en-US stands looked as though they en-US could have been part of an en-US Asian bonsai garden. Stillness en-US was all around me and only en-US the ripple of my boat broke en-US the morning silence. Nothing en-US moving; nothing feeding.en-US The tide was beginning its en-US six-hour incoming cycle and en-US the drift gave me a respite as en-US the kayak moved deeper into en-US the swamp. Although there en-US were no game fish feeding, the en-US first light revealed lots of en-US mullet and shrimp riding the en-US current. I made cast after cast en-US with nothing happening. Oh en-US sure, I had a couple hits, but en-US the fish that did bite did not en-US have their hearts in it. en-US Finally I felt the telltale en-US thump of a flounder. As I en-US reeled the nice 18-inch fish to en-US the boat, my thoughts en-US wandered to the blue crab en-US stuffing that would soon en-US adorn the flatfish. But, once en-US the fish saw the boat, it made en-US a flip and I was left to watch it en-US swim away. Ten-US here goes my en-US stuffing, I thought. en-US A while later I had allowed en-US the Peanut to bottom out on a en-US sand bar in what looked like a en-US good spot. The tide was en-US flowing around the point of a en-US slender island and I was able en-US to toss the chartreuse jig en-US upstream and wait for it to en-US wash back to me. After doing en-US that about 20 times with no en-US results, I was preparing to en-US leave when I heard a big fish en-US feeding. en-US At the point of the island, a en-US red drum was rooting the en-US shoreline with that blunt nose en-US they are famous for. The back en-US of the fish was out of the en-US water and I could tell it was en-US going to be at least 30 inches en-US in length. The wrong size to en-US keep, but the perfect size for a en-US lot of fun. The big guy was en-US intent witen-US h what he was doing en-US and totally oblivious to me. en-US The red was perpendicular to en-US the bank as it worked the en-US shore for a tasty blue crab en-US breakfast. en-US I was a ways off, but I en-US summoned up all my talent en-US and let loose with a horrible en-US cast. My plan was to drop the en-US bait a couple feet down the en-US shore wheen-US re the fish would en-US soon be, but instead I hit it on en-USthe tail. The big fish was en-US startled and jumped straight en-US up before zooming into the en-US depths. Hitting a fish with a en-US lead head jig is not the way to en-US catch it. The red thought it en-US was under attack and made a en-US hasty exit. Good job, Dan!en-US On a slow morning, I had en-US blown my only chance for a en-US bit of fun. As the morning en-US wore on with nothing en-US happening, I replayed that cast en-US over and over in my mind. en-US Sure a breeze had kicked up, en-US but that was no excuse. en-US Perhaps I shoulda moved a en-US little closer. The fish hadnt en-US seen me. Maybe if I had en-US waited for the big fish to move en-US a few more yards it woulda en-US been an easier cast. Oh well, I en-US coulda just stayed home. en-US Nope, not an option. If I en-US had done that, I wouldnt have en-US hooked a flounder and seen a en-US big red feeding. You cant en-US experience that at the house. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. I en-US want it all. Vegetarians on the en-US other hand, dont eat any en-US animals or animal byproden-US -en-US ucts at all. en-US I have to tell you, vegetarien-US -en-US ans earn my respect. I dont en-US think I could ever do that. If I en-US was on a deserted island with en-US nothing but vegetation, I en-US would be looking for en-US anything that moves, slithers en-US or crawls, and everything in en-US the ocean better look out; en-US even sharks would need to en-US hide. I want meat! en-US To be fair, there are a lot of en-US vegetarian options that taste en-US great and you feel better after en-US you eat them. My wife will en-US eat vegetarian on different en-US occasions during the year. en-US Sometimes for religious fasts, en-US sometimes for weight loss, en-US but many times just to feel en-US better.en-US My wife is so lucky to be en-US married to a chef that can en-US cook anything, and takes en-US pride in food and how it en-US tastes and looks. Nothing like en-US blowing my own horn! en-US But all kidding aside, the en-US truth is I like cooking en-US vegetarian dishes. I use to en-US compete in national culinary en-US competitions. I would en-US practice making many dishes en-US to see how they tasted, en-US mostly beef, chicken, pork en-US and seafood. I noticed after en-US preparing a beef entre and en-US eating it, I would feel stuffed en-US afterwards, so I decided to en-US try some vegetarian entres en-US and found I could do a lot of en-US interesting dishes that tasted en-US really great. en-US I also decided to compete en-US using vegetarian entres and en-US found I was the only chef en-US doing vegetarian. None of the en-US other competitors would en-US even try. I thought, here is en-US my chance to WOW the en-US judges with something en-US different, but there was one en-US big problem. The judges were en-US not knowledgeable on en-US vegetarian dishes! I would en-US have judges asking me, en-US Whats quinoa? Why are en-US you using edamame beans? en-US Times are changing. Today en-US fresh from the farm to table en-US means vegetables and fruits en-US are the trend and in demand en-US from the public. Many people en-US are trying to eat healthier and en-US trying different styles of en-US cooking. I found Indian en-US cuisine has many meatless en-US dishes that taste wonderful. en-US Curry flavored recipes use en-US fresh herbs and spices are en-US amazing and easy to prepare. en-US Much of the food is gluten en-US and lactose free, which is a en-US plus for many people. en-US I made the following recipe en-US for my wife and she loved it. en-US She is very picky you know, en-US her husbands a chef.en-US en-USVegetarian Dishen-USIngredientsen-US 2 cans (13.5 oz.) coconut en-US milken-US 2 cups assorted vegetables; en-US zucchini, mushrooms, red en-US onions, red bell pepper, fresh en-US spinach choppeden-US cup chopped cilantroen-US 1 cup cashewsen-US 1 teaspoon turmericen-US 2 teaspoons powdered en-US cardamomen-US 1 teaspoon powdered en-US cuminen-US 1 teaspoon Mace ( optionen-US -en-US al) or teaspoon allspice or en-US nutmegen-US 1 teaspoon ground ginger( en-US fresh is better)en-US Salt and pepper to tasteen-US Directionsen-US Place all ingredients except en-US cashew nuts in a two-quart en-US pan over medium heat. Roses are en-US a perfect addition to your en-US friendly tea garden. These en-US lovely plants are surprisingly en-US easy to grow with some basic en-US TLC.en-US Roses can be successfully en-US planted in either containers or en-US in the ground. In either case, en-US the plants should be in en-US well-drained soil in a sunny en-US location. If you plant your en-US treasures in the ground, be en-US sure the soil drains well. en-US Dig a hole about 15 to 18 en-US inches wide and 18 inches en-US deep. Put a layer of gravel on en-US the bottom of the hole. This is en-US to allow drainage so water en-US drains away from the root en-US system. The same would apply en-US if you plant your roses in a en-US container. The next step is to en-US prepare the soil you are going en-US to use to plant your roses. You en-US should use a mix of a good en-US quality potting soil with en-US around half the mixture en-US composed of organic matter, en-US such as mulch or peat. You en-US can also use some bone meal en-US with your soil mixture. en-US Now, its finally time to en-US plant your prize. Carefully en-US remove the plant from its en-US original container. Place the en-US plant in youren-US prepared hole so en-US the top soil layer on the plant en-US is the saen-US me level as the en-US surrounding soil. Fill the gap en-US underneath the plant with en-US your prepared soil mixture. en-US Now, fill the gaps around the en-US remaining parts of the plant en-US and pack down lightly. You are en-US now ready to water in your en-US newly planted rose. en-US Once you have your roses en-US planted and bursting with en-US color, you will need to do en-US some basic maintenance steps en-US in order to keep them lush en-US and colorful. Since we live in en-US such a humid climate, certain en-US diseases, such as black en-US powdery mildewen-US and black en-US spot, can both be a common en-US problem. Both diseases are GARDEN en-USNOOKen-USJOE ZELENAK en-USIt's time to get ready for fall color in your yarden-USmuch easier to control if you en-US prevent them happening in en-US the first place. Once estaben-US -en-US lished, both are difficult to get en-US rid of. en-US Although there are many en-US products on the market that en-US are used for disease control on en-US roses, Orthenex reigns as the en-US king. The product controls not en-US only diseases, but also controls en-US insect infestation as well. If en-US you are interested in an en-US all-natural cure for fungus, en-US how about baking soda. Thats en-US right, baking soda. Plain en-US ordinary baking soda added at en-US the rate of 3 teaspoons per en-US gallon of water. You then can en-US add a small amount of mild en-US dish detergent to the mix to en-US act as a spreader sticker. This en-US will work as a preventive en-US measure but will not work en-US well if an infection is present. en-US Be sure not to make your mix en-US too strong as damage to your en-US roses could result. en-US Roses are heavy feeders and en-US like a good supply of food. en-US You should feed your roses en-US once a month with a good en-US quality commercial rose food. en-US Always follow label directions en-US carefully. Also please do not en-US put your plants in the line of en-US fire of your sprinkler systems en-US as this keeps your leaves wet en-US which can cause some of the en-US fungus diseases described en-US above. en-US Jen-USoe Zelenak has more than en-US 30 years experienceen-US in gardenen-US-en-US ing and landscape.
