en-USUCF incubator continues en-US breeding business successen-USThe Volusia County Business Incubator has 14 en-US businesses trying to create more jobs for the area.en-US Program Director Gordon Hogan stressed comen-US-en-US panies they work with must create jobs. We have to en-US have you create jobs, otherwise we are going to have en-US you exit the program, Mr. Hogan said.en-US Business startups produce a little over the half of en-US the new jobs in the U.S., he told the incubators advien-US -en-US sory board Thursday, Aug. 23, in an update meeting en-US at the incubator office at Daytona Beach Internaen-US-en-US tional Airport.en-US UCF incubator programs are garnering success en-US and notoriety, Mr. Hogan said. To continue that sucen-US -en-US cess, board members look at which businesses have en-US been the most successful, and why.en-US When we opened it, the idea was to proen-US -en-US vide a place for companies to come in and en-US grow, he said. We dont incubate ideas, we en-US incubate companies.en-US UCF operates nine incubators in Central en-US Florida. en-US Also at the meeting, Heath Jones, an incuen-US -en-US bator client, shared information about his en-US business, and board members discussed the incubaen-US-en-US tors future direction.en-US Mr. Jones is CEO of Koralis-2050 ESports and en-US Michael Stagno is the companys head of engageen-US -en-US ment. en-US The presentation on their video gaming company en-US brought nothing but positive comments from the en-US board.en-US Mr. Jones presented statistics highlighting that en-US 155 en-US million Amerien-US-en-US cans play video games. en-US Esports is an economic tsunami, he said. It is en-US one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Its en-US worth multiple tens of millions of dollars globally. en-US The goals of our company are to help other compaen-US -en-US nies reach a certain demographic. en-USFormer Volusia County en-US Sheriff Ben Johnson easily en-US won the at-large seat on the en-US Volusia County Council, garen-US -en-US nering about 66 percent of en-US the vote.en-US However, County Councilen-US-en-US man Pat Patterson will have en-US to continue his campaign to en-US November after he placed en-US second to Barbara Girtman.en-US Here are the complete, but en-US unofficial results of the prien-US-en-US mary election for Volusia en-US County and municipal officen-US-en-US es. The en-US roof damage was so bad, the en-US ceilings were cracked. The en-US water was extending from the en-US living room into my closet.en-US Then a phone call brought en-US help in the most giving form. en-US The phone rang out of the en-US clear blue (from VIND) asken-US-en-US ing if I needed any help. I en-US said, Sure! Norm (Beatty) en-US worked with me side by side, en-US she said. Before I knew it, en-US the volunteers were here. en-US They were so nice. It took en-US about two and a half months en-US before everything was comen-US-en-US pleted. I am just totally blessen-US-en-US ed. en-US VIND, which stands for en-US Volusia Interfaith Agencies en-US Networking in Disaster, is a en-US not-for-profit organization en-US that networks with other en-US agencies and Interfaiths to en-US help Volusia Countys long-en-US term disaster recovery. en-US VIND still has some Maten-US -en-US thew work left to do, but with en-US Irma, many Matthew victims en-US became revictimized, said en-US Terry Foley, VIND program en-US coordinator. en-US Hundreds of homes en-US remain in need of roof or en-US interior repairs.en-US Everybody works togethen-US-en-US er no matter what faith en-US denomination, Ms. Foley en-US said. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USOne focus is millennials, en-US whom, he said, No matter en-US how well produced your en-US advertisement is, if it is not en-US getting to them on their devicen-US-en-US es, they are not seeing it.en-US Everybody is becoming en-US their own entertainment, Mr. en-US Jones said. People can make a en-US very good living by just being en-US online celebrities and game en-US players. We want to put goods en-US and services into that demoen-US-en-US graphic. We are going to build en-US our content so that it is not just en-US gaming but game-related en-US entertainment. en-US Koralis-2050 also is working en-US on a furniture prototype to en-US accommodate gamers, which en-US they have developed with en-US Holly Hill-based American en-US Technical Furniture Co.en-US Besides building partneren-US -en-US ships, he stressed the art of en-US engagement, qualities the en-US incubator itself embraces. en-US UCFs incubator programs en-US are nationally recognized, said en-US Rob Ehrhardt, Volusia County en-US economic development direcen-US-en-US tor.en-US The Daytona Beach incubaen-US-en-US tors success has largely been en-US because of the County Counen-US -en-US cils commitment to providing en-US job opportunities for local resen-US -en-US idents and providing the funden-US -en-US ing.en-US The countys efforts are part en-US of what Mr. Ehrhardt called, en-US an ecosystem for job creen-US-en-US ation.en-US He noted, The ecosystem en-US works best when we all have a en-US genuine commitment to colen-US -en-US laboration, communication en-US and coordination. We are all en-US on the same team. We all want en-US to see each other succeed.en-US The council pays UCF to en-US manage the incubator, which en-US is on county property. en-US The countys interest is in en-US recognizing the private sector en-US creates jobs, not government, en-US Mr. Ehrhardt said. The public en-US sector is trying to create an en-US environment that stimulates en-US job creation. One other aspect en-US is we have tried to create this en-US geographic location, kind of en-US the center of gravity for things en-US for entrepreneurs.en-US The incubator is at 601 en-US Innovation Way in Daytona en-US Beach. For more information, en-US visit incubator.ucf.edu.en-US rie in the photography departen-US -en-US ment. It kept getting larger and en-US when collections of artworks en-US started coming in, and were en-US housed in a new building, that en-US was the true beginning, Mr. en-US Pearson said.en-US From that one piece, 40 en-US years ago, we are now sitting en-US on 5,000 photographs and en-US photographic ephemera, he en-US said. It was a grass roots camen-US-en-US paign. What separates us from en-US galleries is our collections.en-US The museum also has a en-US community mission, providen-US -en-US ing workshops and classes. en-US Also, it is actually part of a en-US community, Mr. Pearson said. en-US We call this partnership the en-US Southeast Center for Photoen-US-en-US graphic Studies. It is the museen-US -en-US um, Daytona State College en-US photography department and en-US the University of Central Floren-US -en-US ida photography that is taught en-US on this campus. The three of en-US us combined, we have lots of en-US offerings.en-US Both students and faculty en-US have their work displayed as en-US well as work from children en-US that attend workshops. All en-US museum programs are free. en-US Workshops can include topen-US -en-US ics such as preservation of en-US family photographs, archiving en-US and cataloging, basic digital en-US camera operations and comen-US-en-US position techniques, and even en-US intermediate to advanced en-US lighting and editing techen-US -en-US niques.en-US Family Photo Fun Days, en-US offered one to two times a year en-US allow families to receive a free en-US family portrait. Art in Action en-USis an ongoing monthly proen-US -en-US gram where veterans meet and en-US learn from professional artists, en-US to discover and cultivate their en-US own talents, and to transform en-US their experiences through the en-US thoughtful and therapeutic en-US form of self-expression.en-US The two-week digital photo en-US academy each summer allows en-US teens ages 14-17 to learn a en-US wide range of photographic en-US styles while creating their own en-US portfolio in the process. Top en-US photos are included for display en-US in the Youth Gallery Space at en-US the museum. There are also en-US free teen photography outings. en-US Christina Katsolis is the en-US museums programming direcen-US-en-US tor and in charge of the Digital en-US Photo Academy. We had 15 en-US participants, she said. We en-US have quite a few that continue en-US year to year so when they en-US graduate, they actually have a en-US pretty professional photo porten-US -en-US folio. I have had certain stuen-US-en-US dents get full rides to our colen-US -en-US leges by showing off that en-US portfolio. en-US I think it is important that en-US people feel like this is their en-US museum, Ms. Katsolis said. en-US There are a lot of programs en-US we have that they can take en-US advantage of, even early on. I en-US see how talented these young en-US kids are and they are eager to en-US learn. en-US Art Speaks: Voices from the en-US Community is a lecture series en-US hosted by the museum, en-US designed to engage the comen-US-en-US munity by presenting a wide en-US array of guest speakers and en-US professional photographers.en-US The museum also houses a en-US gift store and, during the fall en-US and spring, the Cinematic Disen-US -en-US cussions film series is curated en-US by Senior Professor of Photoen-US-en-US graphic Studies Eric Breitenen-US -en-US bach. Screenings take place on en-US select Wednesdays at 2 and 6 en-US p.m. in the Madorsky Theater en-US at the museum, and admission en-US is free.en-US Exhibits change every 6-8 en-US weeks with 8-10 different en-US exhibits a year and include en-US work from faculty members, en-US youth workshop attendees and en-US internationally known phoen-US -en-US tographers. en-US The museum is now one of en-US only 13 facilities in the U.S. en-US dedicated exclusively to phoen-US -en-US tography, and one of only a en-US handful of such institutions en-US nationally that share a scope, en-US reach, and depth of collection en-US and activities in this specific en-US field.en-US Photography is a continuen-US-en-US ously changing field, Mr. en-US Pearson said. Photography is en-US contingent on the type of techen-US-en-US nology that produces it. You en-US are going from darkroom en-US work and film to digital. Phoen-US-en-US tography is an art form like no en-US other that can bring people en-US together.en-US He described one current en-US exhibit by faculty member en-US Jayanti Seiler as a gateway to a en-US bigger idea. All of these picen-US-en-US tures point to the relationship en-US between humans and animals en-US and what that really means. en-US Photos more than anything en-US can change peoples minds, en-US Mr. Pearson said. en-US While admission is free, a en-US funding cutback has prodded en-US the museum to request a $5 en-US donation at the door. Donors en-US will receive a button to wear at en-US future visits, so they wont be en-US asked to donate again.en-US I want to ensure that the en-US museum is here another 40 en-US years, Mr. Pearson said. My en-US goal is to raise and endow en-US funding so that programs in en-US the museum can remain. A en-US Friends of the Museum group en-US is also being formed.en-US The museum is in the Mori en-US Hosseini Center at 1200 W. en-US International Blvd. in Daytona en-US Beach. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 en-US p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and en-US Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. en-US Wednesday; and 1 to 5 p.m. en-US Saturday. All of the main en-US roads had been paved and it en-US was possible to drive the en-US length and breadth of our en-US country without ever riding en-US on dirt. en-US In Florida, U.S. 1, the great en-US Maine to Key West byway, was en-US a busy thoroughfare. All along en-US the way, enterprising business en-US folks set up shop to try and en-US extract a bit of profit from the en-US endless parade of passing en-US motorists. In Volusia County, en-US the fleecing of the tourists en-US became a way of life for many. en-US Anyone who could get en-US frontage on the highway, en-US would stick up some sort of en-US wayside attraction. These en-US ranged from the sublime, like en-US Marineland north of here, to en-US the sad, like the little gas en-US station just south of Port en-US Orange. There on property en-US that is now Sleepy Hollow en-US Park, the filling station lined en-US the roads with signs advertisen-US -en-US ing live alligators and monen-US -en-US keys. Once a family pulled in, en-US they would find a foot-long en-US gator in a bowl and a tired old en-US spider monkey in a chicken en-US wire cage. No matter, the en-US tourists would invariably buy en-US Indian River citrus or a en-US coconut carved to look like a en-US chimp. Money was flowing.en-US Just a little north in South en-US Daytona sat the world-famous en-US Sea Zoo. (At least that was en-US what the signs proclaimed.) en-US See the leaping porpoises and en-USGeorge the sea cow.en-US If you dont believe those en-US were truly different times, en-US consider I own a copy of Look en-US Magazine (circa 1952) that ran en-US a two-page article on George. en-US According to Look, George en-US was one of only two manatees en-US living in captivity in the world. en-US He was a national celebrity. en-US The magazine piece told about en-US early sailors mistaking sea en-US cows for mermaids. en-US Of course, these days en-US manatees populate nearly en-US every theme park and en-US aquarium in the world. The en-US story does not tell where the en-US other captive manatee lived, en-US but George, the most famous en-US sea cow in America, occupied en-US a roadside attraction in South en-US Daytona. en-US Can you imagine the en-US business done by The Sea en-US Zoo? Add to it that right next en-US door was the Museum of en-US Speed and you know parking en-US must have been at a premium.en-US To this day, manatees are a en-US popular attraction. Have you en-US ever tried to visit Blue Springs en-US State Park in February? en-US Several times I have suggested en-US in this space that the city of en-US Daytona Beach would be wise en-US to create an outdoor manatee en-US attraction in the canals along en-US Beach Street downtown. Now en-US that they are considering a en-US major remake of the area, that en-US idea makes even more sense.en-US The sea cows drew tourists en-US in the s and they still do. I en-US dont believe it would be all en-US that difficuen-US lt to accomplish. A en-US constant warm water source en-US and a few heads of cabbage, en-US and the big manatees would en-US stay there all winter. Families en-US from the north would flock en-US there to view the big cuddly en-US marine mammals. After all, en-US George and The Sea Zoo en-US showed us the way. en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. I think some of our tax money would be well en-US spent on some police and beach safety personnel whose job is, en-US while not completely specific to, focused on littering. en-US It is all too common to see a smoker casually toss a butt on the en-US ground or stick it in the sand on the beach. You are appreciated.en-USIn response to: Lodging places should help en-US with clean upen-USHats off and applause to you and your older hotel.en-US Perhaps one of the reasons you are still in business, and a en-US older hotel, is your consideration for others. Many thanks for en-US your efforts to help make the environment cleaner. Hopefully all en-US the hotels and motels will follow your example and remind their en-US patrons to properly dispose of all litter (cigarette butts are litter en-US too folks!).en-US Posting reminders about littering at your own expense shows en-US true dedication in helping solve this litter problem. She works en-US for Century 21, but she takes time for me and another senior en-US neighbor to make us a hot dinner. Sometimes, even after dinner, en-US she brings us desserts and even one time a root beer float. en-US My rave is there are a angels on earth and I am thankful and en-US raving about the one in my neighborhood. Come on people find en-US your rave.en-USOne-eyed drivingen-USWell, there is one thing that drunk drivers do that texting driven-US -en-US ers dont bother to do.en-US They keep at least one eye on the road at all times.en-USQuality rather than quantityen-USIn response to the Bethune Beach residents expressed concern en-US for still lingering hurricane-related property blight and eyesore, I en-US invite a look/see around the general vicinity of the New Smyrna en-US beachside. en-US Beyond so-called acts of God, such as hurricanes, sinkholes en-US and such, things are generally in a messy shambles. Overgrown en-US yards and littered sand have me wonder what lurks in backyards en-US behind privacy fences.en-US Considering the rampant growth encouraged by the City en-US Council, Realtors, contractors and business owners, no wonder en-US the once quaint little community has lost much of what has in en-US the past made it so special.en-US Rather than further cross purposes, the newly elected mayor en-US and others to come with the wherewithal to affect meaningful en-US change should govern with contented quality rather than lucraen-US -en-US tive quantity kept carefully in mind. I can think of no better way en-US to serve the true best interest of NSB and its residents and visien-US -en-US tors. en-USGolf carts equal traffic hazarden-USDuring the past three months the number of golf carts using en-US Saxon Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, has increased significantly. en-US These carts typically travel at 20 mph or slower, which impedes en-US the flow of daily traffic. People who use Saxon for daily comen-US -en-US merce, i.e. work, appointments, daily errands, etc., have their en-US commute disrupted by people that only care about themselves en-US and not about folks who have to work for a living verses smoken-US -en-US ing, joking and drinking while driving a cart for their own en-US self-interest. en-US At times, 10 cars or more are stacked up behind a slow moving en-US golf cart. If the city and county fathers do not have the courage to en-US stop this dangerous situation, at least enact a restriction of No en-US Golf Carts on Saxon Ave from 6 a.m to 6 p.m. New Smyrna en-US Beach is not a retirement community where golf carts are the en-US primary mode of transportation for retirees who have nothing to en-US do but go to the beach or grocery store.en-USEnforce littering lawsen-USThe trash and cigarette butts being left on our beaches and en-US roadways is really unbearable.en-US There are laws on the books regarding littering I wish they en-USNew officersen-USPhoto courtesy of Cynthia Ramirezen-USFUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools is pleased to announce its 2018-19 officers: Presien-US -en-US dent Susan Mendez of Duke Energy; President-elect Jeff Brok of Merrill Lynch; Vice President Robert en-US Bob Ludlow Jr. of SunTrust; Treasurer Cory Domayer, CPA, of Florida Hospital Flagler; Secretary Elizaen-US -en-US beth Bissy Holden of Florida Health Care Plans; and Immediate Past President Paula Gregory, retired en-US CPA. en-USDEADLINESen-USThe deadline for submissions to Hometown News in Volusia en-US County is 5 p.m. Thursday for the next week's issue, except for en-US Rants & Raves, which is 5 p.m. Friday. I en-US believe the recommendation en-US to wait a year is well-intenden-US -en-US ed . but, it is also a general en-US piece of advice. The key point en-US is to not rush into decisions en-US that can have significant en-US long-term financial impact. en-US Widows and widowers need to en-US give themselves time to assess en-US the realities of their new en-US situation. With that said, if en-US there are time-sensitive en-US financial decisions that need en-US to be made, then they need to en-US be made. en-US However, it is not the best en-US idea to go it alone. If you are en-US already working with a en-US financial adviser, you should en-US have been involved in en-US planning and investing en-US discussions. If so, then you en-US can lean on him/her to guide en-US you through any pressing en-US financial decisions. If the en-US planning you did when your en-US spouse was alive included en-US survivorship scenarios, those en-US plans can be reviewed for the en-US steps that should be taken en-US next.en-US Also, if you have close en-US family and friends, they can en-US be great sounding boards for en-US decisions. Even better, they en-US can accompany you to en-US meetings. Keep in mind, en-US though, unless your well-inen-US -en-US tentioned helpers are trained en-US extensively in finance, it is en-US usually better to rely on the en-US advice of professionals. For en-US example, when one of my en-US clients became a widow, her en-US kids flew in and started en-US moving all of her accounts en-US around, even before my firm en-US knew her husband had passed en-US away! Fortunately she thought en-US to double check with me en-US before it was too late. We were en-US able to stop the transactions. en-US Im sure the kids meant well, en-US but, had those changes gone en-US through, they would have en-US created significant tax, and en-US financial, problems for my en-US client.en-US So, you see, it all depends. en-US When a lifelong partner dies, en-US the emotions a person feels en-US can be overwhelming, and en-US many people experience en-US significant memory issues en-US during bereavement. Its not en-US the time to make drastic, en-US life-altering decisions, but, en-US rather, to follow the plans you en-US have, hopefully, made well in en-US advance. Surround yourself en-US only with those friends, family en-US members and professionals en-US who you know you can en-US depend on and trust, and let en-US them assist and guide you in en-US the months to come.en-US A friend, and PlanStronen-US -en-US gerTV guest, Kathleen Rehl, en-US Ph.D., CFP, wrote the book, en-US Moving Forward on Your en-US Own. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill A-9en-US According to a recent CBS en-US News Special Investigative en-US Report, 64 percent of homes en-US are under-insured by an averen-US -en-US age of 27 percent. en-US Who knew? The staff at en-US Expert Inspectors Inc. en-US Based in Ormond Beach, en-US Expert Inspectors staff are en-US aware of those statistics, and en-US provide comprehensive insuren-US -en-US ance replacement valuations en-US to make sure homes and comen-US -en-US mercial property are insured en-US to the correct current replaceen-US -en-US ment value. en-US Owner Dave Kolodzik cited en-US Florida law that calls for all en-US condominium associations to en-US have an independent replaceen-US -en-US ment valuation conducted at en-US least every 36 months to make en-US sure the proper amount of en-US insurance coverage is in place en-US to protect the financial interen-US -en-US ests of condominium owners. en-US Also, he pointed out that in en-US every homeowners insurance en-US policy, there is an Insured to en-US Value clause that both insuren-US -en-US ance agents and homeowners en-US overlook. The clause states en-US that in order for your insuren-US -en-US ance company to fully replace en-US your home, it must be insured en-US for more than 80 percent of en-US the amount it would take to en-US rebuild your home at todays en-US costs. This is one of the biggest en-US reasons why people with en-US insurance still cannot afford to en-US rebuild their homes after a en-US loss.en-US The premise is people invest en-US in homes because homes en-US increase in value. If an insuren-US -en-US ance policy does not reflect en-US the increasing value of your en-US structure, you could be at risk.en-US Enter Expert Inspectors. en-US People often go by property en-US appraisers input, but property en-US appraisers are not always accuen-US-en-US rate, Mr. Kolodzik explained. en-US He referred to Hurricane Irma en-US where people didnt have en-US enough insurance to rebuild en-US because initially, they didnt en-US know how much to insure en-US their property for. They had en-US no idea what it cost to rebuild, en-US he said. en-US What we do is we go in and en-US do replacement valuation. We en-US put a price on what it would en-US cost to rebuild it. The actual en-US list (we look at) is dozens of en-US items, he said. We look at the en-US type of materials, even down en-US to how easy it is to access the en-US property. I take into consideren-US -en-US ation how hard is it to get en-US building materials or equipen-US-en-US ment in. We valuate on what it en-US would cost to rebuild based on en-US todays materials and labor.en-US As a certified replacement en-US valuation specialist and Florien-US -en-US da licensed insurance adjuster en-US with years of experience, Mr. en-US Kolodzik is the Expert homeen-US-en-US owners can rely upon.en-US I have been doing inspecen-US -en-US tions since 2002 and valuaen-US-en-US tions since 2007. I go in after en-US the fact, too. I know what it is en-US going to look like afterwards, en-US he said. You as a homeowner en-US are responsible for insuring for en-US the proper amount. Real estate en-US resale value is different than en-US construction value. People are en-US horribly under-insured.en-US For example, a local hotel en-US that didnt have the proper en-US coverage has not been able to en-US afford to reopen following en-US Hurricane Matthew, he said. If en-US the owners had gotten the en-US insurance he suggested before en-US Hurricane Maen-US tthew hit, they en-US would have already reopened en-US by now and be making money.en-US Insurance sales agents have en-US rudimentary evaluation soften-US-en-US ware to give you a rough estien-US -en-US mate, but dont come out and en-US look at your property, he said. en-US Nor do they consider wall en-US heights, roof slants, type of en-US floor coverings, counter mateen-US -en-US rials and other factors.en-US Services include four and en-USfive point home inspections, en-US roof condition inspections, en-US and windstorm mitigations. en-US These are inspections to Insuren-US -en-US ance Carrier Specifications, en-US not for real estate inspections. en-US Replacement cost valuations en-US and commercial windstorm en-US mitigations also are done and en-US are different from an appraisal. en-US It is a very specialized field, en-US and replacement valuations en-US are the companys primary en-US focus.en-US There are only a few compaen-US -en-US nies in Florida that do replaceen-US -en-US ment valuations, Mr. Kolodzik en-US said. His cost is $145 for most en-US homes, which includes examen-US -en-US ining and documenting the en-US home for about an hour and en-US then producing a finished en-US report with recommendations en-US for replacement costs, with en-US and without debris removal. en-US The completed report goes en-US to both the homeowner and en-US insurance agent, although en-US homeowners are under no en-US legal obligation to buy addien-US -en-US tional insurance. The cost is en-US generally the same for comen-US-en-US mercial property.en-US If you are looking at an en-US extra $300-400 per year to add en-US enough coverage so you are en-US not going to be $50-60,000 en-US short, its a no-brainer, he en-US said. The last time you need en-US to find out you are not protecten-US -en-US ed is when you have a major en-US loss. en-US It should be noted the comen-US -en-US pany is looking at the cost of en-US structural replacement, not en-US content. en-US Expert Inspectors employs en-US independent cen-USontractors that en-US are spread across more than 18 en-US counties. By the end of 2019 en-US the company goal is to expand en-US statewide. en-US Packages are available if en-US windstorm mitigations are en-US included or if annual valuaen-US-en-US tions are done. en-US For more inforen-US -en-US mation, call (386) 677-8886 or en-US visit en-US flinsurancevaluations.en-US com. 137 Bay St., Daytona Beach Tues-Sat 9:30am-5pm SouthernHomeFurniture.com 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S 386.257.2662 Largest used furniture showroom in the county Expert Inspectors find the right value en-USPhoto courtesy of EXPERT Inspectorsen-USEXPERT Inspectors helps people with providing expert home valuations prior en-US to a disaster so home or business owners know how much insurance to buy to en-US be able to fully rebuild. en-USMr. Kolodziken-USBy Diane M. en-USA-16 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USI en-USwas fishing early from my en-US kayak just west of Cobbs en-US corner in northeast Volusia en-US County. en-USThat water always has a low en-US salinity due to the fact it is fed en-US by a freshwater spring, but this en-US time there was nearly no salt en-US at all. The heavy rain of May en-US and June had trapped lots of en-US freshwater runoff in the en-US swamp and when I tasted it, I en-US could not determine there to en-US be any salt at all. One thing we en-US all know is that when low en-US salinity chases off saltwater en-US fish, the snook are the last to en-US leave. They are famously en-US tolerant of fresh water. en-US On this morning, I had a en-US definite destination in mind. en-US On my two previous trips en-US there, I had found snook en-US under a downed tree. That en-US was a place where a stream en-US narrowed and then made a en-US hard turn. That caused the en-US tidal current to increase, en-US sweeping bait through the en-US partially submerged limbs. en-US After about a half-mile en-US paddle, I approached as en-US quietly as possible, but was en-US immediately disappointed. I en-US had tried to time my arrival en-US with the beginning of the en-US incoming tide, but I was too en-US early. Trying to predict a tide en-US back in there is always tricky. en-US No tide; no fish feeding and en-US nothing to do but wait. en-US It would be over an hour en-US before the tide showed any en-US speed at all, but as soon as it en-US began to move the snook en-US started to feed. On my last trip en-US to the tree, I had hooked a en-US nice 30-inch one and the two en-US of us had engaged in quite a en-US tussle. en-US At one point, I had pulled en-US back hard and my rod bent en-US double with the snook en-US surfacing on the other side of en-US the boat. I had no idea the fish en-US had gone under the kayak and en-US was a good ways downstream en-US on the other side. That time en-US the hook had eventually en-US pulled out and this time I was en-US hoping for round two. en-US Now, to be sure, this is a en-US difficult place to fish. You can en-US hear and see snook popping in en-US the safety of the tree branches, en-US but do you dare cast a lure in en-US there? My plan was to fish en-US around the edges, hoping to en-US entice one to come out and en-US take the bait. That worked and en-US pretty quickly I had a scrappy en-US little 18-inch fish at the net. en-US Good fun, but I could see en-US much larger fish striking en-US deeper in the tree. That was en-US just too tantalizing to ignore. en-US I knew the cast would have en-US to be perfect and to ensure en-US that, I beached the Green en-US Peanut and got out on a en-US sandbar. The cast was good en-US and the jig fell through the en-US limbs. I didnt dare move it for en-US I knew that as soon as I did, en-US the hook would catch a en-US branch. No matter, before it en-US could sink far, the line fairly en-US sizzled as it came speeding en-US back toward me. My only en-US chance of getting that lure en-US back was for it to come out of en-US there in the lip of a fish. That en-US would make it pretty much en-US weedless. en-US Out the big snook came en-US leaping and tumbling like an en-US Olympic gymnaen-US st. Previously en-US I had been fishing in bad luck en-US with the hook pulling free, but en-US not this time. The hook was as en-US tight as a hair in a biscuit. I en-US cranked the big fish over to en-US the shallows around the bar en-US and was able to release it en-US without ever handling it.en-US Folks, snook season is now en-US open and runs until Dec. 15, en-US but I would encourage you to en-US release all of them you catch. en-US You wouldnt wanten-US to end en-US someone elses fun for the sake en-US of a couple fish sandwiches en-US now would you? en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. Its not a en-US national holiday but rather an en-US observance like Mothers Day en-US and Fathers Day. en-US Sorry, I never knew en-US grandparents had a special en-US day. In the restaurant industry, en-US Mothers Day is the big day en-US with 80 million Americans en-US taking mom out to dine. On en-US Fathers Day its a mere 50 en-US million, but Grandparents en-US Day is near the bottom of the en-US list with around 20 million en-US folks dining out.en-US That is just ahead of en-US Administrative Professional en-US Day. Yes, its not a big dining en-US out holiday. There are more en-US than 68 million grandparents en-US in the county with one or en-US more grandkids. They will en-US receive more than 70 million en-US cards, but thats well below the en-US 130 million that moms receive en-US on their special day. en-US So whats going on? I am en-US afraid they are still taking care en-US of their children and now en-US grandchildren as well. Many en-US families are reaching out to en-US grandparents for help. At one en-US time, they were mom and dad en-US taking care of us, nurturing, en-US caring and always there when en-US we needed them. Then one en-US day our life changed and we en-US started raising a family, and en-US now mom and dad are en-US grandma or grandpa or en-US whatever special name your en-US family calls them, YiaYia, en-US Papou, Poppi, Memaw, en-US Pawpaw.en-US They are still Mom and en-US Dad, but now they are helping en-US their grandchildren with the en-US same devotion and dedication en-US they showed when raising en-US their own family. They are en-US born with a special gift for en-US compassion, understanding en-US and true caring. If we need en-US anything, grandparents will en-US always try to help. en-US So, on this special day, just en-US try to show them how much en-US you appreciate them. Ask the en-US grandparents to your home if en-US you can, and let them share en-US with your children. If that is en-US not possible, take pictures or en-US Skype (youll probably have to en-US show them how.) But make en-US sure you let grandparents en-US know just how grateful you en-US are to have them in your life. en-US Make it a very special day. en-US Try this special menu for en-US your grandparents they en-US should enjoy it. Give them the en-US gift of happy memories they en-US can look back on.en-USSeared Scallopsen-USIngredients (4 servings)en-US 1 to 1 1/2 pounds dry sea en-US scallops, approximately 18-20en-US 3 teaspoons butteren-US 3 teaspoons olive oilen-US Kosher salten-US Freshly ground black en-US pepperen-US Directionsen-US Rinse with cold water and en-US thoroughly pat dry.
