en-USMainStreet program looks en-US to Ormond Beach future en-USOrmond Beach MainStreet will continue to proen-US-en-US vide redevelopment and promotional services for en-US the citys downtown.en-US The City Commission voted Aug. 21 to renew a en-US contract with the non-profit, volunteer-based orgaen-US -en-US nization.en-US They are a really great organization that proen-US -en-US vides a tremendous amount of value to our city, en-US Mayor Bill Partington said. One of the best things en-US about the MainStreet organization, as opposed to a en-US chamber (of commerce), is that it accepts members en-US who dont own businesses. In other words, residents en-US who just care about or interested in the downtown en-US can join. en-US MainStreet presents weekend festivals that en-US are fun for the whole family, the mayor said. en-US The festivals, including the Seafood Festival en-US and Celtic Festival, bring thousands of resien-US -en-US dents and visitors to downtown. en-US Their volunteers do an amazing job runen-US -en-US ning these events, he said. It would cost a en-US couple hundred thousand dollars a year, if en-US not more, to have city staff create and put on the en-US same events. That is why I say we get such a huge en-US bang for our dollar in supporting Ormond Beach en-US MainStreet.en-US Julia Truilo, executive director of Ormond Beach en-US MainStreet, said, The idea behind the MainStreet en-US program is it brings the community together to en-US work on preserving a vital, interesting, vibrant en-US downtown space, where the community can gather, en-US where en-US businesses can sucen-US -en-US ceed, and where a community, a town, a city en-US begins to develop a sense of self. A lot of places have en-US lost that over the course of time.en-US She added the MainStreet idea helps citizens en-US address concerns, such as blight and traffic. It also en-US helps come up with ideas on how best to rebuild en-USAfter three years, the Halien-US-en-US fax Humane Societys Reimen-US-en-US aging the Future campaign en-US has achieved its capital funden-US -en-US ing goal.en-US Thanks to donors throughen-US -en-US out Volusia County, the $3.6 en-US million capital campaign en-US goal is now complete with en-US the last of the contributions en-US raised at the Neighbors Helpen-US-en-US ing Neighbors Golf Tournaen-US -en-US ment Aug. 18 at LPGA Interen-US -en-US national.en-US It was a long time comen-US -en-US ing, said Pam Clayton who is en-US the societys chief financial en-US development officer. A capien-US -en-US tal campaign is a huge en-US endeavor, especially for a en-US not-for-profit. We are so en-US grateful to all of our valued en-US donors for helping us achieve en-US our capital campaign goal. en-US This effort has been a major en-US accomplishment and we en-US could have never achieved en-US success without the support en-US of the entire community.en-US The capital campaign got a en-US big boost from Nancy and en-US Lowell Lohman, who donaten-US -en-US ed more than $1 million en-US towards the Lohman Adopen-US -en-US tion and Pet Center, and en-US from Patricia Culler, who en-US donated more than $500,000 en-US for the Lee C. and Patricia en-US Culler Boarding, Grooming en-US and Travel Center.en-US The first phase of the capien-US -en-US tal campaign was the addien-US -en-US tion of the dog park, funded en-US in part by a Volusia County en-US ECHO grant. There is a large en-US dog and small dog play yard, en-US along with a walking trail at en-US the park, which is open daily.en-USHalifax Humane en-US Society reaches en-US funding goal en-USGarden en-US willen-US grow in en-US Daytona en-US Beachen-USDerbyshire Place will soon en-US have a community garden as en-US part of the nonprofits en-US expanding services under en-US the direction of Miguel en-US Rodriguez, en-US who took over as en-US interim director five months en-US ago. en-US The family community en-US center is under the auspices en-US of the First United Methoden-US -en-US ist Church of Port Orange.en-US This is a safe place, Mr. en-US Rodriguez en-US said. We are a en-US community center that en-US offers programs to help en-US strengthen children and en-US families of this community en-US all for free. en-US The center has a single en-US moms support group, en-US seniors exercise class and a en-US children program, he said. en-US We are now trying to start a en-US community garden in this en-US area. Since this area is a en-US lower socioeconomic neighen-US-en-US borhood, and considered a en-US food dessert, a community en-US garden would change the en-US landscape.en-US The garden also could en-US bridge the generation gap en-US between seniors and chilen-US-en-US dren, Mr. Rodriguez said. en-US Photo by Diane Careyen-USJosiah Rodriguez, left, displays signs with his en-US father, Miguel Ridriguez, where a Community en-US Garden will be created as part of Derbyshire en-US Place in Daytona Beach. en-USNew school security en-US in place; new en-US programs underwayen-USAll Volusia County Schools en-US have either a school guardian en-US or a law enforcement officer, en-US which is especially new for eleen-US-en-US mentary school students this en-US year, but there aren-US e a few differen-US -en-US ences between the two.en-US The chief difference en-US between a law enforcement en-US officer or a school guardian is en-US that guardians do not have the en-US authority to make an arrest en-US and are employees of the en-US school district.en-US Guardians have undergone en-US extensive background checks, en-US drug testing, a psychological en-US screening, 132 hours of trainen-US-en-US ing with the (Volen-US usia County) en-US Sheriffs Office, 12 hours of en-US diversity training and another en-US 12 hours of training on securien-US-en-US ty in schools and strategies for en-US dealing with students, Nancy en-US Wait, VCS director of commuen-US -en-US nity information services, en-US explained in a news release. en-US Guardians will carry a conen-US -en-US cealed weapon and wear a disen-US -en-US trict polo that identifies him or en-US her as a guardian.en-US Every middle and high en-US school within the district are en-US assigned VCSO deputies or en-US police officers, and with the en-US exception of Champion, Palm en-US Terrace, South Daytona, Turie en-US T. N en-USot long ago I was a guest en-US on The Legends of en-US Racing pod cast and en-US radio show at Racings North en-US Turn Restaurant in Ponce Inlet.en-USThat program is normally en-US hosted by the ultimate en-US NASCAR historian Buz en-US McKim, but on that day he en-US was out of town and Roland en-US Via took over as M/C. Many en-US of you will know Roland as the en-US long time morning talk show en-US host on WELE radio and as en-US former mayor of Holly Hill. en-US Buzs radio show airs each en-US Friday at noon and can be en-US heard live on the net as well as en-US past episodes playing on en-US Facebook video. Buz has so far en-US presented guests like en-US NASCAR Hall of Famer en-US Bobbie Allison and his en-US brother, Donnie, long time en-US racing photographer Don en-US Bok, and former NASCAR en-US mechanic Olin Hopes. All en-US racing royalty as is Buz en-US himself who has spent a en-US lifetime chronicling stock car en-US history. en-US When I first met him about en-US 20 years ago, he was head of en-US the NASCAR archives, but en-US was later sent to Charlotte to en-US help with the opening of the en-US NASCAR Hall Of Fame. After en-US retiring from that facility, he en-US returned to Daytona Beach, en-US but it didnt take long for him en-US to get his hand back in. en-US Each week, the show en-US features interviews with en-US drivers, mechanics, team en-US owners and racing historians. en-US That last category would en-US include me and my longtime en-US friend, Suzanne Heddy. She en-US and I have worked together en-US for years to make the public en-US more aware of this areas en-US fabulous racing history. en-US Beginning in 2003, Roland en-US was a big part of the centennien-US -en-US al events at Ormond Beach to en-US commemorate the 100-year en-US anniversary of the first beach en-US races. Those events were en-US staged by several groups, but en-US at the forefront was The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association. Suzanne and I are en-US both on that groups board and en-US Roland is the president.en-US That day, as Roland, en-US Suzanne and I sat before a en-US large crowd, we enjoyed an en-US easy rapport of the type that en-US can only come from a long en-US friendship. The three of us en-US play off each other as easily as en-US pups from the same litter.en-US Roland guided us through en-US stories of early beach racing en-US and of the fun we had staging en-US the centennials. We spoke of en-US the fantastic cars that had en-US attended along with some of en-US the characters who owned en-US them. We talked of the racing en-US celebrities who had come to en-US the beach to be a part of it. en-US People like drag racing king en-US Big Daddy Don Garlits and en-US NASCAR team owner Jack en-US Rousch among them. en-US I told of the time just before en-US the first centennial when my en-US teen-aged son handed me the en-US phone saying, Dad, there is en-US some nut on the phone saying en-US he is Jay Leno! Of course, it en-US was Jay, a world famous car en-US guy, who couldnt resist en-US getting in on the fun we were en-US having on the beach. From the en-US podium, we introduced en-US motorcycle racing legend Doc en-US Batsleer and Al Wanser, who en-US owns a sleek 1930 Model A en-US racer. Both of those fellows en-US competed in the centennial en-US beach races. en-US On that day, a lot of racing en-US history was covered, but as en-US always happens when the en-US three of us get together, the en-US hour passed too quickly. We en-US barely chippen-US ed the surface of en-US the beach racing stories we en-US hoped to en-US tell. Still, the crowd en-US seemed to enjoy it and why en-US not. There we were sitting on en-US the beautiful deck at Racings en-US North Turn, enjoying great en-US food with the famous beach en-US only feet away. en-US That restaurant is actually a en-US functioning museum with en-US walls covered with NASCAR en-US and land speed record en-US memorabilia. If you are a en-US racing fan, or just a fan of the en-US beach, stop down to be in the en-US live audience for Buzs next en-US show. I guarantee you will be en-US taken back to a time when en-US daring drivers raced wild en-US machines and right in that en-US very spot.en-US en-USDan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association aen-USnd is the author en-US of two booksen-US, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. God sees everything. Hope en-US you are feeling shameful now. en-USGive bicyclists more roomen-USSince there are improvements going on up and down U.S. 1, en-US couldnt the bicycle lanes be widened to maybe six feet? en-US The law states motor vehicles need to give a bicycle three feet en-US of clearance. The existing bike lane is barely three feet wide in en-US most areas. This is not enough room when vehicles are doing 45 en-US mph (or more often much faster). Factor in cell phone usage, en-US navigation devices and any other number of distractions, and it en-US makes for a dangerous ride, particularly north of Willmette en-US where the posted speed limit is 55 mph.en-US I know as a motorist, if I am traveling in the right lane and I en-US approach a bicyclist in the bicycle lane, in order for me to give en-US the bicycle proper clearance, I need to be almost in the left lane. en-US In fact, unless there is a vehicle next to me in the left lane, my en-US wheels will be on or over the white dividing lines to safely pass a en-US bicyclist.en-US As a frequent bicyclist on this road, I can tell you some motoren-US -en-US ists will do the same. Then there are the motorists who dont give en-US an inch. This is why the lanes need to be widened where possien-US -en-US ble. That was with less en-US than 70 percent of the area en-US reporting.en-US Realtors continue to en-US struggle with a lack of en-US inventory, but as the economy en-US continues to grow, there is a en-US market segment that might be en-US able to help it the move-up en-US buyer. Judging by the numbers en-US of larger homes that builders en-US are putting up, there apparenten-US -en-US ly are quite a few move-up en-US buyers cashing in on their en-US improved lot in life.en-US Of course, builders are en-US focusing more on the en-US $180,000 to $280,000 price en-US range for houses on 50-foot en-US lots, but there several builders en-US adding houses in the $300,000 en-US and up range, many of them en-US move-in ready rather than en-US custom built. My usual en-US concern is still there, though, en-US about the lack of lower-priced en-US houses for sale. When all en-US those two-bedroom cottages en-US in Ormond-by-the-Sea went en-US past $150,000, I knew it was en-US getting expensive.en-US ***en-US A report from Ormond en-US Beach government shows the en-US demolition/rebuild of the en-US Publix at The Trails Shopping en-US Center will happen and is en-US targeted for summer 2019. Beach St.en-USHen-USello, my name is Mike en-US Peerless and I am the en-US reverse mortgage loan en-US director at Holland Mortgage en-US Services, a subsidiary of en-US Holland Financial. en-USDavid Holland has asked en-US me to step in this week and en-US share a strategy with you on en-US reverse mortgage loans. So, en-US here we go.en-US Some retirees, and those en-US who are about to retire, worry en-US their nest eggs wont last. They en-US are concerned about the en-US long-term viability of Social en-US Security and Medicare, and/or en-US they dont feel theyve saved en-US enough in their 401(k) plans. en-US This leads many to ask, Are en-US there any other cash flow en-US alternatives out there? The en-US answer is yes, one of them en-US could be a reverse mortgage en-US loan. en-US If you are 62 or older, and en-US own your home with a small en-US or no mortgage, you could en-US establish a reverse mortgage en-US line of credit (REVLOC). en-US Although there are closing en-US costs, once established, the en-US line of credit grows at a en-US pre-determined rate, cant be en-US arbitrarily frozen or canceled, en-US and can be used, as needed, to en-US meet cash flow needs. Once en-US money is borrowed on the en-US REVLOC (and this is a big en-US distinction versus a regular en-US home equity line of credit), en-US the borrower is not required en-US to make any monthly payen-US -en-US ments, as long as he/she lives en-US in the residence, pays property en-US taxes and homeowners en-US insurance, and maintains the en-US property. en-US Heres a strategy that can en-US keep interest and mortgage en-US insurance expenses low. en-US Step 1: Establish the Reverse en-US Mortgage Line of Credit; en-US Step 2: Pay the upfront costs en-US associated with establishing en-US the line by making payments en-US (even though they are not en-US required); en-US Step 3: Watch your en-US REVLOC credit line increase en-US each year (every month, the en-US line of credit will grow at the en-US same rate as you would be en-US charged on any monies that en-US are borrowed). This strategy en-US reduces the overall cost, while en-US providing the very important en-US flexibility of having a line of en-US credit you can draw on en-US without having to make en-US regular interest or principal en-US payments. en-US Four Benefits: en-US 1. A REVLOC can make en-US more funds available for en-US emergencies, as well as home en-US improvements, travel and the en-US grandkids education. en-US 2. The REVLOC, if desired, en-US can be used to take monthly en-USpayments over your lifetime, en-US and that of a spouse, if he/she en-US is also on the loan. en-US 3. If you rely on your en-US investments for regular en-US income, you can switch your en-US withdrawals to a REVLOC en-US during a stock market decline en-US (thereby avoiding the liquidaen-US -en-US tion of investments while they en-US are down in value). Doing so en-US could help susten-US ain your en-US income during difficult en-US financial times. en-US 4. Borrowing on a REVLOC en-US can provide the funds needed en-US for in-home care. Why not en-US access some of your homes en-US equity to pay for home care en-US that lets you stay in your home en-US as long as possible?en-US These are just a few examen-US -en-US ples of how a reverse mortgage en-US loan may help those 62 and en-US older maintain their financial en-US independence and lifestyle!en-US David D. As I waited, a nice en-US 26foot, off-shore boat pulled en-US up beside me in the left turn en-US lane. I admired the twin 200 en-US horse Yamahas and how well en-US the craft was appointed. en-USWhen the arrow came on, en-US the boat began to move slowly en-US forward. The cen-US ar in front of en-US me was a nice Porsen-US che and the en-US driver had his window down en-US while smoking a cigarette. en-US When the rear of the boat en-US drew alongside the sports car, en-US the automatic bilge pump en-US decided to turn on. A large en-US and steady blast of water shot en-US into the car, hitting the driver en-US in the head and dumping at en-US least five gallons of water into en-US the Porsche. My, oh my, the en-US fellow was infuriated. en-US The persons in the boat tow en-US vehicle continued on their en-US way oblien-US vious to what had just en-US happened. I think they were en-US going to find out, for the car en-US pulled out of line to follow en-US them. I considered going with en-US them as well just to see what en-US the consequences might be en-US but I thought better of it. en-US Not long ago, I told you of en-US my nice annual trip down to en-US Sebastian Inlet just south of en-US Melbourne. On my last day en-US there, it happened to be en-US opening day of the lobster en-US mini-season and the state en-US park anen-US d boat ramp were en-US jumping. It was so busy, I en-US decided not to launch and, as en-US I headed out of the park, I en-US noticed a family snorkeling en-US along the south bank of the en-US inlet. That rocky area could en-US hold a few lobsters and I en-US stopped to see how they were en-US doing. en-US As I sat on a picnic table, I en-US saw their floating dive flag get en-US away and take off on the en-US strong outgoing tide. I yelled en-US to the father I would drive east en-US and try to catch it at the en-US fishing pier and I did just that. en-US I had no luck and the flag was en-US picking up speed as I watched en-US from the shore. Just then the en-US mother came running down en-US the road and when she saw the en-US flag leaving, she jumped right en-US in with no hesitation.en-US Now everyone knows en-US Sebastian Inlet is a treacheren-US -en-US ous place and no one would en-US try to swim in such a raging en-US current, but there she went. en-US Pretty quickly the woman en-US began to scream for help. I en-US was the only one nearby. Now en-US I must ask: If a person jumps en-US into a raging stream, am I en-US obliged to follow? I dont think en-US so. Stupid is as stupid does. en-US Still, I knew I couldnt just en-US stand there and watch the en-US woman drown. I ran to my en-US boat for a life vest, thinking en-US maybe I could throw it to her en-US or, in the worst case, I would en-US have to put it on and try to en-US swim out. Not a plan I en-US relished. Thankfully, when I en-US returned, the woman was en-US crawling out and only needed en-US a hand up from me. en-US So you see, anytime you are en-US around water or boats or en-US fishermen, trouble can find en-US you. The fellow towing the en-US boat in Daytona Beach en-US probably found that out. You en-US dont have to be fishing to get en-US into trouble. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. en-USB-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USI en-USwant to thank all the en-US workers of America and en-US Canada for giving us the en-US national holiday of Labor Day.en-USYes, it started in Canada. en-US Labor Day can be traced back en-US to a Canadian union strike en-US parade in 1872. Unionization en-US was considered a crime at the en-US time, so the parade prompted en-US Prime Minister John A. en-US Macdonald to repeal the en-US anti-union laws, and a celebraen-US -en-US tion followed. en-US Soon afterward the United en-US States adopted the holiday, en-US celebrating it in September. en-US The long Labor Day weekend en-US of fun, picnics and food en-US became a signal of the end of en-US summer and going back to en-US school. en-US Growing up in Florida, I en-US can remember hating to see en-US Labor Day weekend come, en-US because it meant the end of en-US summer fun and jobs. No en-US more corn dogs, cotton candy en-US and snow cones, or going en-US swimming or fishing. It was en-US time to get ready to go back to en-US school mature, learn and en-US one day enter the work force. en-US That was many years ago. en-US Today, like millions of en-US Americans, I look forward to en-US the mini-vacation from work, en-US but it always brings back en-US memories of my childhood en-US growing up in Florida near the en-US oceans and seeing it every day en-US and enjoying its pleasures. en-US One day when I retire, I can en-US go back to my childhood en-US pleasures and eat a corn dog en-US anytime I want, watch the en-US sunset over the ocean, and en-US when Labor Day comes it will en-US be more enjoyable because en-US every day after it will still be en-US Labor Day! Funny how life en-US goes full circle. en-US Now let us talk about food. en-US No, I am not giving you a en-US corndog recipe. That would be en-US too easy. Buy a buttermilk en-US pancake mix and follow en-US directions. Add a tablespoon en-US of cornmeal. Pat dry the hot en-US dogs and dip in batter and fry en-US until golden brown. On the en-US other hand, just buy them en-US frozen. The real food on Labor en-US Day has turned into a weeken-US -en-US end of BBQ and everyone en-US cooking their favorite foods en-US over fire. Here is a recipe that en-US is surprisingly good. Enjoy en-US your Labor Day weekend.
