You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. Contact will en-US be initiated before individuals en-US are released from a facility, en-US within 24 hours after release to en-US make sure they are connected en-US with continuing care services, en-US and ongoing as needed. en-US The money will be used to en-US create care coordination posien-US-en-US tions in the four counties en-US served by SMA, Flagler, Puten-US -en-US nam, St. Johns and Volusia.en-US Also, a trainer will be hired en-US to train others in QPR (quesen-US-en-US tion-persuade-refer) and en-US QPRT (question-persuade-reen-US-en-US fer-treat). Clinicians will get en-US the latter while others will be en-US trained in QPR, such as staff in en-US jails or hospitals or VA facilien-US -en-US ties. The training will help en-US them know what to look for if en-US someone might be suicidal. en-US Also, so they know the type of en-US questions to ask and can be en-US able to persuade them to look en-US for services and refer them to en-US the right services.en-US One of the goals here is en-US through these efforts to get en-US our suicide rates down to en-US zero, Mr. Miley said. We are en-US ensuring that we are engaging en-US them and are really encouragen-US -en-US ing them to follow through en-US with the services that are availen-US-en-US able for them in the communien-US -en-US ty. en-US Statistics from the Florida en-US Department of Health show en-US Volusia and Flagler counties en-US consistently exceed the annual en-US suicide rate for the state. For en-US example, in 2015 (the most en-US recent statistics available), the en-US rate of suicide per 100,000 en-US people in Florida was 14.6, en-US with the rate in Volusia Counen-US-en-US ty was 22.6 and Flagler was en-US even higher at 23.9. en-US He stressed that although en-US then-US ere have been budget cuts to en-US some SMA programs, a wide en-US array of services exist for anyen-US-en-US one needing help with mental en-US health or suen-US bstance abuse en-US issues. Motivation on the part en-US of clients themselves can be a en-US factor so this en-US new programen-US-en-US ming will be more proactive in en-US helping engage clients more en-US effectively. en-US We are very active in going en-US after federal dollars, state dolen-US -en-US lars, local dollars to provide en-US services to our communities en-US that we serve, Mr. Miley said. en-US SMAs Rhonda Harvey en-US noted, Our local jails have en-US increasingly become de facto en-US treatment centers for individen-US-en-US uals with substance depenen-US -en-US dence disorders and severe en-US mental illness. Our goal is to en-US focus new effort toward interen-US -en-US vening in that dynamic as well en-US as targeting those veterans en-US who are not eligible for VA en-US benefits and are treated and en-US released at a VA clinic after en-US experiencing suicidal ideen-US -en-US ation. en-US SMA has been serving the en-US northeast Florida community en-US with mental health and drug en-US treatmenten-US services for more en-US than 50 years. You en-US know how it works, put in a en-US coin or token, then take up a en-US mallet and try to hit a cute en-US little rodent on the head en-US whenever it appears up en-US through a hole. It is one of the en-US most simplistic games ever en-US created and also one of the en-US most popular. en-US Whac-A-Mole was invented en-US and is made and sold out of en-US Holly Hill. Thats right, the en-US little unassuming bedroom en-US community that sits tucked in en-US between Daytona Beach and en-US Ormond Ben-US each is home to en-US Bobs Space Racers. That en-US company is one of the largest en-US suppliers of arcade games in en-US the world. Bobs has produced en-US countless games, but Whac-A-en-US Mole is still their signature en-US piece. en-US The company facility is a en-US large and modern one with en-US more than 120 employees and en-US sits tucked up against the en-US railroad tracks in Holly Hill. en-US It took a friend of mine, en-US Tony Cassata, to remind me of en-US the presence of Bobs Space en-US Racers. Members of Tonys en-US family have been involved en-US with the company from the en-US beginning and still are. en-US Company President Jack Cook en-US of Ormond Beach says they en-US are constantly looking for the en-US next big thing and are currenten-US -en-US ly pushing their Stinky Feet en-US game. That involves shooting en-US a water pistol at the soles of a en-US clowns feet to score points. en-US Trying to come up with en-US something as popular as en-US Whac-A-Mole must be a en-US daunting task. One thing is for en-US certain. those impish rodents en-US are big in my family. en-US You see, 44 years ago I en-US married Lana, a pretty en-US hippie-type girl. I remember en-US one of our first dates being at en-US the Boardwalk arcade in en-US Daytona Beach. Of course, en-US that was long before Bobs en-US Space Raceren-US s invented en-US Whac-A-Mole. That momenen-US -en-US tous event would happen just en-US over 30 years ago and would en-US roughly coincide with the en-US birth of our two children. en-US By then Lana had matured en-US and become a woman with a en-US very ladylike demeanor. en-US Ladylike until she walked en-US through the doors of Chuck E en-US Cheese, the childrens pizzeria en-US and arcade. As soon as we en-US entered. I knew our two kids en-US would be in my charge for en-US Lana would rush to the en-US Whac-A-Mole game and en-US attack it with a vengeance. en-US She would pound out a en-US staccato, machine gun-like en-US beat and the moles didnt en-US stand a chance. As soon as the en-US tip of a rodents nose en-US appeared, Lana was on it.en-US Bobs Space Racers could en-US not possibly know the joy they en-US have given my wife. On days en-US when motherhood had worn en-US her down, Whac-A-Mole en-US could revive her. I loved it. Oh en-US sure, I played the game, but en-US my real fun came from en-US watching her. en-US Lana played the game in en-US Wiscoen-US nsin, Illinois, Las Vegas, en-US New Orleans, Atlanta and en-US many points in between. That en-US mindless arcade game allowed en-US her a few precious moments of en-US escape. (At times I wondered en-US if she saw my face on the en-US moles she pounded, but I tried en-US to keep that thought out of my en-US mind.) en-US No, Whac-A-Mole has been en-US a blessing to our family. To en-US discover it is made locally en-US makes it all the more fun. en-US Thanks Bobs Space Racers!en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. There was close parking, air conditionen-US-en-US ing and free seats.en-USRoad maintenance neededen-USWe live in Ormond-by-the-Sea, taking A1A scenic highway en-US back and forth every day; diligently paying our taxes and wonen-US -en-US dering what services we are actually getting for them.en-US As we drive along, we notice the palmettos are thriving so en-US much from the rain the northbound lane is slowly disappearing. en-US In large areas you can no longer see the painted white line that en-US defines the lane, making it smaller than the opposite side and en-US the large trucks go scraping along.en-US Where are the services that trim this back?en-US The shoulder lane that bike riders use southbound, at times, is en-US almost nonexistent in spots since the edging hasnt been done in en-US forever and the grass/weeds cover the shoulder. The weeds along en-US the sidewalks from all the rain are sky high.en-US Seems nothing gets done until a hurricane comes through en-US making the road crews come out to clean debris that shouldve en-US been cared for in good times.en-US Are we paying for something that isnt being done?en-USIn response to: Bring back building heights limitsen-US en-USResponse from Daytona Beach Shores Mayor Harry Jennings: en-US The two most common elements in todays society are oxygen en-US and ignorance. en-US In your Friday, Aug. 3, issue, an individual wrote asking the en-US residents of Daytona Beach Shores if they wanted 35-plus story en-US condos on beachside.en-US If this individual read the ordinance or even made inquiry, he en-US or she would know the new ordinance limits building heights to en-US the size of the parcel. Prior to the City Council pursuing this en-US topic, the city conducted a study. The study found only five en-US vacant lots in the city qualify for a height limit in excess of 20 en-US stories. Not one of these properties qualify for a building in en-US excess of 26 stories. en-US Life would be so much better if those with an education would en-US use it.en-USGood thing needs better managementen-USGifts of Love did a good thing on Aug 3 at Elks in Edgewater en-US for food donations.en-US However, it was very unorganized. Volunteers had no direcen-US -en-US tion or leader to tell the oversized crowd where to go, what to do, en-US etc.en-US Seems to me people should have brought bags, bagged them en-US up and left, instead of cars waiting in long lines overheating, en-US people passing out.en-USIn reponse to: Religious confrontationen-USOn the Daytona Beach Boardwalk, I find it odd that it is en-US allowed to use a bullhorn to blast ones religious views at passen-US -en-US ers-by, but it is not permitted to quietly assist people with regisen-US -en-US tering to vote.en-USLodging places should help with cleanupen-USI think all the hotels, motels and condos on the beach should en-US do more to help with the litter problem on the beaches and roaden-US -en-US ways. en-US They should post strictly worded reminders not to litter and en-US to put cigarette butts in garbage. The beach is not a giant ashtray. en-US These reminders should be at the front desk, in every room, en-US every exit and especially at beach accesses from the property. en-US Also, I think all the hotels, motels and condos that have beach en-US front access property should be required to have maintenance en-US personnel do a beach and street cleanup every morning. This en-US cleanup should include from bulkhead to shoreline and include en-US the entire width and breadth of properties. These hotels, motels en-US and condos all enjoy beach privileges and and make money en-US from it and so should assume some liability in regards to the liten-US-en-US ter left by their guests. It should be a law and a fineable offense. en-USGreat mosquito controlen-USKudos to the Volusia County mosquito control. en-US I called because of a sudden burst of swarming mosquitoes. en-US The nice gentleman at mosquito control assured me they would en-US head my way in a day or two, as they were spraying just south of en-US my area. Sure enough, those lovely yellow flashing lights were en-US spotted the next night. en-US Three days later, a representative came out, and sprayed en-US around the city drains. Excellent service during a busy, rainy seaen-US -en-US son. en-USThanks for the kindnessen-USTo the wonderful couple who found and returned my daughen-US -en-US ters wallet: en-US You took the time to grab the wallet off busy U.S. 1. You took en-US the time to locate us and drive it to our front door. You took the en-US time to do the right thing. en-US May you be richly blessed and know that you restored faith to en-US a young lady who was desperately losing faith in people and her en-US place in this world. Thank you for your kindness and making the en-US world a better place. en-USIn response to: Third World Countryen-USCity of Port Orange code enforcement (like most cities) operen-US -en-US ate on a reactive basis.en-US They rarely venture out on a proactive nature to seek out vioen-US -en-US lations. You need to report your valid concerns and follow up en-US diligently, then you might see results. en-US I would agree, there is much blight in Port Orange that could en-US and should be enforced. en-USIn response to: Ticket the textersen-USHats off to this rant. Last week, I was run off the road by an en-US opposite direction texter while traveling north on John Anderen-US -en-US son Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea. en-US Half this persons vehicle was across the line on my side of the en-US road by time they turned their attention back to driving the car. en-US John Anderson has areas where there are trees right out to the en-US edge of the road. Fortunately this didnt happen in one of those en-US areas, and I was able to escape by driving on someones lawn.en-US Law enforcement should be issuing steep fines for texting en-US while driving, and anyone causing an accident because of it en-US should be treated as if they were drunk. Texting while driving is en-US not innocent. It is reckless. You are operating a machine that is en-US the equivalent of a loaded gun.en-USHave a great school yearen-USThank you to all of the teachers who are working hard to preen-US -en-US pare for the 2018-19 school year. en-US Teaching is a hard job, with relatively low pay. So, lets take en-US a wider look.en-US Over the first six months of en-US 2018, collections are up 6.4 en-US percent from the same period en-US of 2017. Not a huge jump, but en-US a respectable amount that en-US shows we are on the right en-US track. Its also enough to en-US continue drawing interest en-US from hotel and restaurant en-US developers. en-US Its not just the Halifax area, en-US either. The increase is countyen-US -en-US wide. While some of it in West en-US Volusia comes from displaced en-US Puerto Rican families, overall en-US it shows more people are en-US visiting the county and thats en-US not about to stop.en-US Thats a good thing when en-US you consider how many new en-US hotels were about to see open. en-US The next two, the Courtyard en-US by Marriott in downtown en-US DeLand and the Home 2 en-US Suites by Hilton at West en-US International Speedway and en-US Fentress ben-US oulevards, probably en-US will get more business en-US travelers than tourists, except en-US during the race weeks and en-US biker rallies, of course. But en-US then here comes The Daytona en-US at OneDaytona that will en-US attract a mix of business en-US travelers and tourists, and en-US probably will be full most of en-US the time.en-US There are several other en-US hotels in the pipeline, none as en-US big as the Daytona Beach en-US Conventien-US on Hotel and en-US Condominiums, but they will en-US continue to add quality rooms en-US to the mix.en-US ***en-US A couple of restaurant en-US projects showed up last week en-US that people may wonder if en-US theyll ever see. The contracen-US -en-US tor building Jimmy Hulas in en-US the Down Under area of Port en-US Orange filed a Notice of en-US Commencement with the en-US Volusia County Clerk of en-US Courts. We en-US try to protect our clients from en-US every eventuality. Yes, there en-US are certain things you need to en-US do to prepare yourself for the en-US bumps along lifes journey, en-US but I dont need to remind my en-US readers that life is short. en-US Not long ago, I was on a en-US cruise with my family. I had en-US splurged on an upgraded en-US cabin that gave us access to a en-US specialty restaurant on the en-US ship. I did this because I knew en-US the smaller restaurant would en-US be better able to accommodate en-US my wife, Tonis, gluten-free en-US dietary needs. en-US One evening, after the kids en-US had run off to the ships Teen en-US Room, Toni and I sat down at en-US the restaurant to enjoy a glass en-US of wine. As we were reveling en-US in some quiet time, I couldnt en-US help but notice a woman and en-US gentleman at a nearby table. en-US The couple was well-dressed en-US and probably in their 70s. en-US They had, obviously, spent the en-US extra money, just like we did, en-US to have the upgraded cabin en-US and access to the more en-US intimate restaurant. The en-US woman was cutting the mans en-US steak for him. She looked fit en-US and alert, but her husband en-US moved slowly and gazed en-US quizzically at his food. He en-US picked up a vegetable, en-US inspected it, then put it down. en-US He pushed the steak pieces en-US around on his plate, but I en-US never saw him eat. The couple en-US wasnt smiling, laughing or en-US talking about what they saw at en-US the port that day. They sat in en-US silence . and . so did we.en-US It was heartbreaking. Im en-US sure this wasnt the cruise en-US experience they imagined en-US during their working years, en-US when they were younger and en-US planning their retirement. en-US Knowing what they do now, en-US Im sure their advice would be, en-US Live now. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill A-15en-USEen-USven though we live in en-US Florida, finding a golf en-US course right on the ocean en-US that many of us can play is not en-US the easiest of tasks. en-USFlorida has 1,350 miles of en-US coastline, second only to en-US Alaska. Yet, most of the few en-US courses we do have right on en-US the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf en-US of Mexico are private.en-US Fortunately, I have found a en-US great resort that just happens en-US to have two courses and sits en-US right on the ocean. We en-US recently took a short drive up en-US Interstate 95 to Palm Coast, en-US home of the beautiful Hamen-US -en-US mock Beach, a Salamander en-US Resort. en-US The resort, which is right on en-US the Atlantic Ocean between en-US Daytona Beach and St. en-US Augustine, features a pair of en-US fantastic golf courses and en-US accommodations ranging en-US from the quaint, cozy lodge to en-US two and three bedroom en-US condos, to villas or suites. en-US Since I was dragging the entire en-US clan with me, a three-beden-US -en-US room place was in order.en-US After a peaceful three-hour en-US drive (thank heaven for smart en-US phones and tablets), we en-US arrived at the Lodge overlooken-US -en-US ing the Atlantic, checked in en-US and were directed to our home en-US for the weekend. For the en-US weekend we enjoyed a en-US gorgeous three-bedroom en-US condo right on the resorts en-US 2.5-mile stretch of pristine en-US beach. From our sixth-floor en-US perch we could see most of the en-US resort, and even spotted a en-US dolphin swimming in the en-US waves.en-US Our condo was named en-US Cinnamon Beach. One look en-US at the beach and we knew en-US exactly how it got its name. en-US The beach wasnt the sand en-US most of us are used to, but en-US instead tiny pieces of crushed en-US shell the color of fine cinnaen-US -en-US mon. The view was breathtaken-US -en-US ing and immediately relaxing.en-US It was easy to figure out en-US what the kids liked. While en-US they liked everything, just a en-US couple hundred yards away en-US from our condo were two en-US pool areas. One was for the en-US adults, the other for families en-US or kids. The kids area has en-US everything a kid would want, en-US a sparkling cool pool, en-US complete with a climb-on en-US playground with water en-US cannons, sprinklers and the en-US like. After swimming and en-US water fighting, it was off the en-US game room. en-US My early afternoon away en-US from everyone was spent en-US enjoying a round of golf. en-US Having played the Jack en-US Nicklaus designed Ocean en-US Course a few years ago, I en-US wanted to test my skills on the en-US newer track. The Conservatoen-US -en-US ry is a Tom Watson Signature en-US design covering 140 acres of en-US dramatic elevation changes en-US not commonly found in en-US Florida. To add to the en-US challenge, Watson created 76 en-US acres of lakes and water en-US hazards.en-US The course features six sets en-US of tees, a pair of unique creeks en-US that wind their way through en-US the course, a stunning en-US waterfall and 140 bunkers. In en-US a nod to his affinity for British en-US links-style design, Mr. Watson en-US also included three sod-faced en-US bunkers. I need to thank him en-US for placing those right where I en-US would hit a shot the next time en-US I see him.en-US The course plays as long as en-US 7,776 yards or as short as en-US 5,509 yards, allowing every en-US golfer a chance to find the en-US right blend of fun and en-US challenge. The courses en-US signature hole is the eighth. en-US This par-3 features an island en-US green. From any tee box, this en-US is one intimidating hole.en-US The back-nine begins with a en-US 636-yard par-5. This is the en-US longest hole on the course, no en-US matter what tees you have en-US chosen. There is also one of en-US Toms sod-faced bunkers en-US placed at the front-center of en-US the green. This is a truly en-US fantastic hole.en-US The 15th hole is a short en-US risk-reward par-4. The sharp en-US dogleg right tempts you to cut en-US the corner and leave yourself en-US with a short edge approach. en-USGet too greedy and youll find en-US yourself in a huge bunker area en-US or worse, in the water.en-US The finishing hole, featuren-US -en-US ing a panoramic view of the en-US golf course from its elevated en-US teeing ground, is fantastic. en-US Long hitters will have a chance en-US to reach the green in two on en-US this par-5, but must be careful en-US to carry the stone bulkhead en-US guarding the green.en-US Mr. Watson placed a en-US priority on driving the ball en-US well to conquer this layout. en-US Many of the fairways are tight, en-US protected by beautiful oak, en-US pine and natural fauna, but en-US drives in the fairways tend to en-US roll more than you are used to. en-US A tribute to Toms love for en-US links golf. Thankfully, the en-US greens are large and generous. en-US Tom only designs a couple en-US courses each year, and he en-US certainly puts a lot of care and en-US effort into those to make them en-US as wonderful as possible. It en-US certainly shows here.en-US Between the great golf en-US course, the beautiful accomen-US -en-US modations and the family haven-US -en-US ing a fantastic time, I hardly en-US noticed the heat. If youd like en-US to treat yourself or someone to en-US a weekend like this, Hammock en-US Beach Resort has packages for en-US golfers and non-golfers alike. en-US Give them a call at (866) en-US 502-6228 or visit hammocken-US -en-US James Stammer has been an en-US avid golfer and golf enthusiast en-US for nearly 40 years. The first en-US boat ramp was grandfathered en-US in when the park was formed, en-US so there is no charge to use it. en-US However, that is only true for en-US motorized vessels. Kayak and en-US canoe paddlers must pay the en-US entrance fee. en-US At the ramp I went about en-US the business of readying my en-US boat for launch, but pain en-US caused me to look down at my en-US ankles. It appeared I was en-US wearing black socks with my en-US flip flops. Mosquito swarm! en-US Picking up the pace, I was en-US soon in the boat where the en-US no-see-ums waited to feast. en-US Once I had the boat up on en-US plane, the breeze cleared me of en-US the insect stowaways. en-US My plan was to look for en-US spotted sea trout in four or en-US five places I had caught them en-US in the past. The tide was about en-US halfway into then-US e outgoing en-US phase, which meant I would en-US have to be careful. The Lagoon en-US is a treacherous place to en-US navigate at high tide but, at en-US low tide, you had best know en-US what you are doing or you will en-US be out pushing. en-US My first stop did not yield a en-US hit, but I was throwing a top en-US water lure in a place where en-US nothing was feeding on the en-US surface. When I went to the en-US jig, a scrappy 12-inch manen-US -en-US grove snapper took it. Those en-US little guys are tough for it en-US ruined my soft plastic jig tail en-US and about six inches of my en-US line. en-US I retied while motoring to a en-US long bank where I had once en-US caught a trout with two heads en-US (see my book for details.) The en-US boat began a slow drift en-US northward just outside a deep en-US slough. Pretty quickly I had a en-US nice little 15-inch keeper en-US trout. On my next cast I had a en-US hard hit and knew I was on en-US with a good one. The fish ran en-US hard. all the while staying en-US near the bottom. Gator trout!en-US Nope, ladyfish. Odd the en-US lady stayed deep and never en-US tried to jump, but it was a en-US good one at nearly 30 inches en-US and I kept it for bait. Wheneven-US -en-US er I catch a ladyfish I switch en-US methods and start using cut en-US bait for red drum. en-US All the while I was still en-US casting the jig and managed to en-US catch a couple small sea trout en-US to release. That action en-US attracted the attention of a en-US baby dolphin. The little guy en-US was less than three feet long en-US and cute as the dickens, so I en-US threw it a piece of the ladyfish. en-US It gobbled that right up and en-US seemed happy (but they en-US always seem to be smiling, en-US dont they?) en-US At another spot, the wind en-US had kicked up, making fishing en-US just a bit tougher although I en-US did enjoy the cooling effects. en-US Another small keeper came to en-US the boat and. on the way back en-US to the ramp, I pulled up to try en-US one last spot. Sure enough, on en-US my second cast, a nice one en-US took the jig. Gator trout! en-US Nope, sail catfish. It took a en-US pretty good fight for me to en-US land the big cat with a head en-US the size of a large grapefruit.en-US OK, thats it for me. Too hot en-US to stay out for ladyfish and en-US catfish. My in-laws en-US were visiting for a few days en-US and they were great taking en-US care of breakfast and lunch, en-US and when I came home, I en-US would make dinner. en-US That is when it started. I en-US would come home and find a en-US kitchen towel draped over the en-US faucet of the kitchen sink to en-US dry. Dont try to hide I en-US know you towel-drapers are en-US out there. What kind of en-US kitchen training is that? I en-US came home the next day and en-US the same towel was draped en-US over the faucet again. en-US This had to be someone en-US trained by their grandparents en-US or great-grandparents. Yes, en-US from the 1800s to around en-US 1950, food staples, such as en-US flour, sugar, cornmeal, and en-US chicken feed were packaged in en-US tightly woven 50or 100-en-US pound cotton sacks. en-US During the American Great en-US Depression, between 1929 and en-US the late 1930s and into the en-US early 1940s, everything was en-US hard to come by. Frugal en-US housewives would re-use en-US these cotton sacks and make en-US them into kitchen towels and en-US clothing. Historically the en-US Ottoman Empire is credited en-US with the development of the en-US Turkish towel because of their en-US knowledge of rug weaving, so, en-US by the 1800s, they had en-US developed a flat woven cotton en-US or line towel that featured a en-US loop known as Havav, the en-US Turkish word for towel with a en-US loop. Bet you didnt know en-US that? en-US Anyway, the towels did not en-US become affordable until the en-US 19th century with the advent en-US of the industrialization of en-US cotton. Companies were able en-US to mass produce cotton terry en-US toweling by the yard. Meren-US -en-US chants were now able to offer en-US pre-made towels. These towels en-US would be used for every job in en-US the kitchen. In 1931, the first en-US American company to en-US introduce paper towels and en-US napkins was Scott Paper. en-US Which brings me back to en-US my kitchen. OK, I use cotton en-US towels to handle hot food and en-US cooking pans, but I use paper en-US towels for cleanup. Unfortuen-US -en-US nately you towel-drapers use en-US the same towel over and over en-US again for several days and just en-US rinse it and hang it on the en-US kitchen faucet. When was the en-US last time you found a linen en-US towel roll machine in a en-US restroom? You dont because it en-US was found to be unsanitary, en-US because wet linen towels will en-US promote bacterial growth. Use en-US it and then place it in the en-US washing machine and not the en-US kitchen sink. en-US Now its time to talk about en-US cooking., What would you en-US like?
