en-USVolusia school district en-US maintains its B gradeen-USStudents arent the only ones who receive report en-US cards.en-US Volusia County Schools have garnered a solid B en-US average in the latest school grades released by the en-US State Department of Education.en-US We are pleased to announce that Volusia County en-US School District is a B for the fourth consecutive en-US year, said Nancy Wait, director of community inforen-US -en-US mation services for Volusia County Schools. This is en-US the result of the hard work of our students, teachers en-US and leaders throughout our district.en-US For Volusia County high schools, the top grade en-US went to Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, en-US the only high school in the district to achieve an A en-US with nearly 600 points awarded. University High en-US School in Orange City, Deltona High School in en-US Deltona, Seabreeze High School in Daytona en-US Beach and Atlantic High School in Port en-US Orange all received a grade of B, the district en-US average. en-US The remaining district high schools, en-US Deland, Mainland and Pine Ridge received en-US C grades, with New Smyrna Beach High en-US School receiving an I or Incomplete grade.en-US (The reason for the I grade for) NSB was en-US because less than 95 percent (of students) tested, en-US Ms. Wait said. We will appeal to have the grade en-US released.en-US Similarly for district middle schools, Creekside en-US and Silver Sands, both in Port Orange, captured A en-US grades for middle schools, while DeLand, Ormond en-US Beach and Deltona received B grades. The remainen-US -en-US ing district middle schools, Galaxy, Dewitt Taylor en-US Miden-US -en-US dle-High, Southen-US-en-US western, New Smyrna Beach and Campen-US-en-US bell, received a C grade.en-US While the majority of the districts elementary en-US schools performed at the district average of a B, or en-US slightly below with a C, Tomoka, Pine Trail, Ormond en-USThe Mid-Eastern Athletic en-US Conference has named en-US Bethune-Cookman Universien-US-en-US tys Lyndsey Edwards the en-US 2018 Woman of the Year, the en-US first time a Wildcat has en-US earned the honor.en-US The award, selected annuen-US -en-US ally by the MEAC Senior en-US Woman Administrators, celen-US-en-US ebrates the achievements of en-US senior female student-athen-US -en-US letes who have excelled in en-US academics, athletics, service en-US and leadership. en-US In a BC-U news release, en-US MEAC Commissioner Dr. en-US Dennis Thomas stated, I en-US would like to congratulate en-US Lyndsey Edwards for having en-US a spectacular career, not only en-US in womens basketball, but in en-US her academic pursuits as en-US well. In addition, her service en-US to the community is truly en-US exceptional. I would like to en-US thank the Bethune-Cooken-US-en-US man University athletic staff, en-US coaches, academic support en-US personnel and Lyndseys en-US family, who had an influenen-US -en-US tial part in Lyndseys success. en-US I wish her continued success en-US in her future endeavors.en-US Ms. Edwards is a a native en-US of Indianapolis and she was en-US part of three MEAC reguen-US-en-US lar-season championship en-US squads with the Wildcats, en-US sharing the title in 2015-16 en-US and 2017-18 and winning en-US outright in 2016-17. Not a en-US happy sight. Curiosity made it en-US hard for me to look away, but, en-US like many of you when I first en-US heard he had killed himself, I en-US thought it had to be a mistake.en-US The character Mr. Bourdain en-US portrayed on his program was en-US a self-centered egoist. How en-US could someone like that en-US decide he could not take en-US another day on this planet? To en-US be sure, he always displayed a en-US dark side and, although I liked en-US to watch his show, I knew he en-US was not the kind of guy I en-US could sit with to enjoy a beer. en-US His TV efforts, first on the en-US Travel Channel and more en-US recently on CNN, were based en-US on a film crew following him en-US around the world as he ate en-US whatever was offered in en-US faraway lands. He was always en-US honest about what he was en-US served, to the point of being en-US cruel. On almost every show, en-US Mr. Bourdain would have en-US some snide comment about en-US his hosts and often took en-US potshots at celebrities he en-US detested. en-US Once, when he was in en-US Finland, he noted the men en-US there were tall, averaging six en-US feet, one inch (Anthony was 6 en-US feet, 4 inches). As an aside, en-US Tony said it would not be en-US good for the short Tom Cruise en-US to go there for one of those tall en-US Fins might eat a bowl of soup en-US from atop his head. That was en-US the type of remark that kept en-US me tuned in. en-USOnce at Malibu in Califoren-US -en-US nia, Mr. Bourdain told his en-US viewers this was the beach to en-US the Hollywood stars and then, en-US he said, if you get lucky, you en-US might see the wind blowing en-US Ben Afflecks hair along the en-US sand. I cracked up. You just en-US dont hear things like that on a en-US cooking show. en-US Once I saw Tony getting off en-US an airliner on a cold tarmac in en-US some faraway place and he en-US told us this was a show he had en-US been trying to avoid for years, en-US but was now finally pressed en-US into doing it. This is Sweden, en-US he says, and you know whats en-US in Sweden? ABBA. Mr. en-US Bourdain was a big fan of rock en-US music, but despised the en-US Swedish foursome ABBA. To en-US illustrate that point, everyen-US -en-US place he went to eat or drink en-US while ABBA music was en-US playing in the background, en-US there was a chef with an en-US attitude. en-US On an edition of No en-US Reservations, filmed in Cuba, en-US he sat with an American en-US ex-patriot who was a big fan of en-US Earnest Hemingway. When en-US that segment was over, he en-US looked into the camera and en-US told his viewers he never cared en-US for the way Hemingway en-US worked so hard to show his en-US masculine side. Then, as he en-US sought yet another cure for a en-US hangover, he mentioned that en-US obviously Hemingway was en-US trying to make up for his male en-US shortcomings. en-US The guy was out there and en-US nothing was off limits to him. en-US He seemed to be having fun, en-US but now we know he was not. en-US He once said that although he en-US loved his job, he usually found en-US himself alone and far away en-US from the people he cared for. en-US You know Volusia County en-US has a high rate of suicide and en-US it has been that way for many en-US years. It is a paradox that here en-US in the place where so many en-US people flock for fun, a good en-US number of our resident en-US population cannoen-US t bear en-US another day. Each year our en-US area ranks higher than the en-US state average for people taking en-US their own lives. Terrible. en-US Depresen-US sion sometimes en-US becomes overwhelming. en-US Look, people, if you know en-US someone who may be en-US depressed, put in a little time en-US and be a friend. No matter en-US what we believe, all of us are en-US connected to each other and en-US the earth around us. If you are en-US feeling despondent, ren-US each out en-US to someone or just take a walk en-US through the woods. It is an old en-US clich, but suicide is a permaen-US -en-US nent solution to a temporary en-US problem. R.I.P. Good job en-US Hometown News and thanks for all you do. en-USIn response to: Dont get bottled upen-USYour incorrect depiction of what took place is shameful.en-US First of all, the eatery you described is a one-item, self-serve en-US shop where you add your own toppings. Second, and most en-US importantly, you were not refused water. You just refused to pay en-US for it as they only offer bottled water. There are no ice or water en-US machines in this shop. en-US You publicly humiliated and berated an innocent teenager, en-US who was respectfully following this shop's rules. You kept insisten-US -en-US ing that up north its against the law to refuse someone water. en-US Again, you were not refused water. Your husband even put a boten-US -en-US tle of it on the counter for you, but you refused to pay for it.en-US The respectful, working teenager was having a very pleasant en-US conversation with your husband before you came in and started en-US your rant! I believe if these places en-US are sponsoring the groups that come to play, then their food and en-US drink should be allowed inside the fence. en-USEnough fast fooden-USWe get the point, we dont need a bunch of fast-food places in en-US Edgewater.en-US We have Burger King, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Chick-Fil-A, en-US Chinese, thats enough to get you fast foodies by. en-USTurf not tough enoughen-USCan someone please get the new Dodge dealership at Glencoe en-US Road and State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach to fertilize the en-US turf out front. en-US It has been several months since they opened and it is just geten-US -en-US ting worse and worse. He gives you all the options, not just the high-en-US end ones and ramifications for each approach so you can make a en-US wise decision.en-US Cheaper is not always better, but maybe a necessary option for en-US some of us. Pain reduction at the pocket book level keeps this en-US senior citizen smiling. en-USIn response to: Watch out for overchargesen-USMy husband and I also experienced overcharges. en-US As an accountant, I do compare what I was charged by the en-US physicians office versus what my insurance company shows as en-US its share and my share. By the time I finally put a spreadsheet en-US together to compare, the amount due me was more than $3,000. en-US Some specialists offices only charge for the office visit copay en-US and wait until the insurance company pays its share for the proen-US -en-US cedure cost. Then the patient is billed, which doesnt result in the en-US patient overpaying. en-US But when you have to pay up front for your estimated share, en-US there is the risk of over payment. I too felt I could not be the only en-US one this was happening to and cannot overemphasize the imporen-US -en-US tance of reconciling your actual payment to what the insurance en-US shows your share should be.en-USDouble-check price on sale itemsen-USHeads up, for shoppers who use the Winn-Dixie on Nova en-US Road in Port Orange. en-US I have been routinely overcharged for sale items by as much as en-US $3.50. The en-US supermarket chain only has en-US one store in Florida, which is en-US actually a Harris Teeter, but it en-US has a lot of stores in Georgia en-US and you just cant help but en-US wonder if it doesnt have its en-US eyes on expanding to Florida, en-US a thought that came to mind en-US as I watched the banner ads en-US for Kroger on the Coke Zero en-US 400 Saturday night. Even en-US though it has no stores here, it en-US has long been a major en-US NASCAR and International en-US Speedway Corp. sponsor.en-US Who knows, ShopOne en-US might be considering swapen-US -en-US ping the Publix at The Trails en-US for a Kroger. A blasphemous en-US statement for Floridians, but en-US stranger things have hapen-US -en-US pened. For example, the en-US Trader Joes distribution en-US center in an area where it has en-US no stores.en-US ***en-US Daytona Beach Internationen-US -en-US al Airport keeps plugging en-US along. Hope springs eternal en-US that well get a direct flight to en-US another city besides Atlanta, en-US Charlotte and New York.en-US ***en-US There already are a lot of en-US apartments in development or en-US under construction across en-US Volusia County, but you can en-US add two more complexes. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USVon-Aire Inc. is celebrating en-US its 50th anniversary as an air en-US conditioning and heating conen-US -en-US tractor in Central Florida.en-US Von-Aire was founded in en-US 1968 by Harold VonBrocken en-US and began operating in Deltoen-US-en-US na. That same year it was choen-US -en-US sen by Mackle Brothers Deltoen-US-en-US na Corp. to be the heating and en-US air conditioning provider for en-US their massive new Deltona en-US Lakes development (now the en-US City of Deltona).en-US In the early 1980s, Von-Aire en-US decided to curtail their stateen-US -en-US wide operations and concenen-US -en-US trate their efforts to best serve en-US Volusia, Flagler, Seminole and en-US Lake Counties. en-US Tammy VonBrocken Dalton en-US and sibling, Richard Vonen-US -en-US Brocken, grew up in their en-US fathers business, but didnt en-US officially join until they en-US obtained college degrees, the en-US former in accounting and the en-US latter in business. Haron Vonen-US-en-US Brocken died in 2005. en-US Today, the VonBrocken siben-US-en-US lings continue the work begun en-US by their father with their Holly en-US Hill-based business at 1738 en-US State Ave. en-US The industry has changed a en-US lot, Richard VonBrocken said. en-US The biggest difference is the en-US technology has changed a lot, en-US particularly on the service en-US side. The technology has en-US brought the industry to a point en-US where education is critical for en-US the techs. We do a lot of resien-US -en-US dential new construction. A en-US lot of the competitors in this en-US business do none at all. en-US Mr. VonBrocken emphaen-US-en-US sized there is a good living to en-US be made in the trades and en-US honor in the trades. Now is his en-US busy season. en-US Heating is not constant, as en-US the summer is (the need for air en-US conditioning). Once we get en-US hot we stay hot, he said. Our en-US winters are such we have a en-US cold blast of three or four days en-US then we warm back up or we en-US are cold in the morning and en-US we warm up in the afternoon. en-US So, it is not as consistent. We en-US do run after-hours service en-US seven days a week. We do not en-US charge extra for after-hours en-US service.en-US We provide the full array of en-US HVAC services, everything en-US from residential to construcen-US-en-US tion and light commercial, en-US new construction to mainteen-US -en-US nance plans to service and en-US repair and replacement, Mr. en-US VonBrocken said. We have en-US the full spectrum of services. en-US We are in it for the customen-US-en-US er-base long-term relationen-US-en-US ship. We also have a very en-US diverse product line of various en-US major brands. The famien-US -en-US ly-owned culture goes through en-US the entire business. We take en-US the same attitude to the cusen-US-en-US tomer level that we do interen-US -en-US nally.en-US He added, We have 16 to 18 en-US employees and we consider en-US them all key employees. If they en-US werent key to our business, en-US they wouldnt be here.en-US Much of the staff has been en-US with Von-Aire for years, en-US including a second-generation en-US employee, Joey Cash, whose en-US father worked at Von-Aire en-US more than 20 years. en-US Being a family-run and en-US family-owned business, we en-US tend to look at our staff as en-US family as much as co-workers, en-US Mr. VonBrocken said. As a en-US result, they tend to be pretty en-US long term and that works well en-US for both of us.en-US It is a very challenging en-US business. There is a technical en-US side, there is a customer seren-US -en-US vice side. There is the conen-US -en-US struction side. It is a very en-US diverse and very varied type of en-US business, he said. No two en-US days are ten-US he same around here. en-US It is constantly challenging. en-US Our employees have to be en-USextremely diverse as well. They en-US are not doing the same thing en-US every day either. en-US Both Florida natives, Ms. en-US Dalton lives in Lake Mary and en-US Mr. VonBrocken lives in en-US Ormond Beach.en-US For more information, visit en-US, en-US or, in East en-US Volusia, call (386) 672-1950; in en-US Flagler County, call (386) 439-en-US 4422; in en-USWest Volusia and en-US North Seminole County, call en-US (386) 775-2521. U en-USnfortunately many en-US people who need en-US hearing aids refrain en-US from buying them. en-USWhy? Some people are en-US reluctant to face the fact they en-US are hearing impaired. Other en-US people are concerned with the en-US cost. Either way, not being en-US able to hear well can lead to en-US irritable exchanges with your en-US loved ones, less social interacen-US -en-US tion (including feelings of en-US isolation and depression), and en-US even financial problems.en-US Financial problems, you en-US might ask? Well, as an adviser, en-US I spend much of my time en-US meeting with clients, many of en-US whom are retirees. Yes, I do en-US use various visual aids to en-US supplement my analyses and en-US recommendations, but it is en-US very important my clients en-US clearly hear what I am en-US presenting.en-US Misunderstandings can en-US occur in a variety of situations, en-US if someone only hears parts of en-US a conversation and is too en-US embarrassed to ask another en-US person to repeat them self. en-US (Dont worry about that with en-US me, though; I want my clients en-US to fully understand everything en-US discussed in our meetings, en-US and to that end, Ill happily en-US repeat myself as many times as en-US it takes! And, my wife tells me en-US I do that at home, too!) en-US Even those with substantial en-US assets sometimes refrain from en-US buying an auditory device. en-US Hearing aids can be expensive en-US and, unfortunately, most en-US insurance policies, including en-US Medicare, wont pay for them.en-US The bigger problem, en-US though, is what are you en-US missing? Bank transactions, en-US doctors appointments, even en-US driving, require a person to en-US hear well to make the right en-US decisions.en-US Is there a solution? Well, Im en-US not an ear nose and throat en-US specialist or audiologist, and I en-US dont play one on TV (Im en-US sorry, have I used that joke en-US one too many times?), but en-US here is an option. If cost is en-US your major concern, you en-US might consider buying a en-US hearing aid direct-to-the-en-US consumer online. Some sites en-US even provide hearing tests, or en-US you can send the one peren-US -en-US formed in your ENTs office. en-US Now, granted, you may still en-US need to go to a local hearing en-US professional for a fitting, but en-US by effectively unbundling en-US the hearing aid from the en-US service, you may be able to en-US save several hundred dollars, en-US if not more.en-US Another option, especially en-US for those experiencing mild en-US hearing impairment, is a en-US personal sound amplification en-US product. PSAPs are not en-US approved as medical devices en-US by the FDA, but if all you need en-US is a moderate amplification of en-US sound, these can be ordered en-US online for a fraction of the en-US price of a hearing aid. en-US In summary, if you are en-US starting to notice you are en-US saying what? or huh? each en-US time your husband, wife, en-US co-worker, friend or adviser en-US talks to you, dont fear a en-US diagnosis of hearing impairen-US -en-US ment. It doesnt necessarily en-US mean you will need hearing en-US aids. en-US I encourage you to get en-US tested, talk candidly with your en-US ENT and audiologist, and en-US then do your own research. en-US Your home life, social life and en-US financial life may reap the en-US benefits of your clearer en-US hearing! In my en-US minds eye I could see all the en-US flounder that had gathered en-US there in my absence. Wrong en-US stuffed filet breath! en-US I arrived at dawn in time to en-US watch the big orange ball rise en-US over Coquina Sands Island to en-US the east. The water felt good en-US to my flip-flop shod feet, but en-US the no-see-ums were en-US enjoying a good feed at my en-US expense. After dousing en-US myself with citronella I was en-US able to concentrate on the en-US fishing. en-US In the first morning light I en-US was stopped dead in my en-US tracks. I was standing in en-US about a foot of water and I en-US could not see my feet. Never en-US in all my days of fishing the en-US Halifax have I seen the water en-US in such poor condition. The en-US water seemed turbid and had en-US taken on the color of strong en-US coffee. It was four hours en-US before full high tide, so the en-US current should have been at en-US its peak, but try as I might I en-US couldnt find any tidal flow at en-US all. Not a ripple. en-US The wide bay east of the en-US park was like a desert. No en-US bait in the water. No fish en-US feeding and, more importanten-US -en-US ly, no dolphin anyplace to be en-US seen. Every good flounder en-US fisherman knows without the en-US dolphin around, there is a en-US poor chance of flounder en-US being present. en-US Still, I was there and coated en-US in bug spray, so I may as well en-US fish. As I walked, I thought en-US about the water rehabilitation en-US they give to racehorses with a en-US bad leg. Maybe my walking en-US through the water would help en-US my healing process. I forged en-US ahead casting all the way. The en-US last time I fished that area en-US back in April, I had caught a en-US nice 26-inch red drum, a jack en-US and a couple sea trout, but en-US this time nada, zip, zero! en-US There was not a minnow or en-US even a hermit crab to be seen.en-US Biting the bullet, I tasted en-US the water in two separate en-US places to find there was en-US practically no salinity at all. en-US The runoff from all the en-US recent rain was trapped due en-US to the lack of tidal flow in the en-US Halifax. I had to grit my teeth en-US as I thought about the en-US contractors busy at work en-US adding to the problem as they en-US construct the new bridge at en-US Orange Avenue.en-US Under the direction of The en-USFlorida Department of en-US Transportation, each time a en-US new bridge is constructed the en-US river is dammed up by the en-US dumping of waste material. en-US This has been going on en-US forever and now the river is en-US unable to flush the polluted en-US runoff out into the Atlantic. en-US The trapped water will stay en-US there until we get a strong en-US storm from the north and en-US that may not happen until en-US this winter. I began letting en-US the state officials know about en-US this problem long before I en-US started writing for this paper, en-US but they and the politicians en-US couldn't care less. Its progress en-US they say. Nothing will be en-US done until the Halifax begins en-US to stink up the expensive en-US homes along its banks. That en-US day seems to be approaching en-US quickly. en-US On this day, I caught en-US nothing. That by itself is not en-US all that unusual, but I never en-US even had a bite. That is en-US extremely rare. en-US To give you an idea just en-US how poor the water has en-US become, a friend of mine cast en-US netted a fresh water blue gill en-US from the docks at Granada in en-US Ormond Beach. That is en-US unheard of and a sure sign of en-US the lack of salt. Our inshore en-US waterways must have salt to en-US survive. Over five decades I en-US have watched the decline of en-US our estuaries and now the en-US end is near. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years.
