en-USStadium gets new name; en-US firm touts youth sportsen-USIts a whole new game and everyone is invited en-US said Dean OBrien, CEO of DME Stadium LLC, en-US Tuesday, June 26, at DME Sports Academy in Daytoen-US -en-US na Beach. en-US The former Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium en-US has been renamed Daytona Stadium.en-US Along with DME owner Mike Panaggio, Mr. en-US OBrien detailed plans for the venue, including $20 en-US million in enhancements to revamp the 30-year-old en-US facility. en-US If it is meant to happen eventually, let it happen en-US immediately. And it has, Mr. Panaggio said. We are en-US here today announcing that it is a whole new game. en-US It is a whole new game in youth sports, (and) we en-US believe at the municipal stadium.en-US DME is trying to develop a top-notch en-US youth sports program. en-US We are going to make it affordable and en-US available for every kid that wants to particien-US -en-US pate, he said. We are creating a scholarship en-US program. The scholarships are only going to en-US be for those Volusia County residents that en-US want to participate in programs here. Our goal is to en-US give back to the community.en-US He lauded Daytona Beach City Manager Jim en-US Chisholm and other city officials for their support. en-US The company has a long-term lease with the city to en-US manage the stadium. en-US While he does well in business, Mr. Panaggio said en-US he loses money on youth sports programsen-US Still, he said, Nothing makes me feel better, to be en-US able en-US to do it right. What en-US we are trying to do is build a sports ecoen-US -en-US system. Every one of these schools (that already uses en-US the stadium) needs to raise money and we are en-US experts at helping them do that. We are excited en-US about all the different things we are going to be able en-US to do for Volusia County schools. en-USSo far, at least 14 Volusia en-US County Schools will have unien-US -en-US formed police officers rather en-US than armed School Guardians en-US in their schools this fall, helpen-US -en-US ing fulfill mandates set by Senen-US-en-US ate Bill 7026. en-US Volusia County School en-US Board members approved en-US agreements June 28 with the en-US DeLand, South Daytona and en-US Daytona Beach police departen-US -en-US ments to pay 70 percent of the en-US costs for 14 officers from the en-US safe schools allocation, with en-US the cities paying the remaining en-US 30 percent of the costs not en-US covered by the allocation. en-US With the new agreements, en-US passed as part of the consent en-US agenda at a regular board en-US meeting, South Daytona Eleen-US-en-US mentary School, DeLand Miden-US-en-US dle School, DeLand High en-US School and 11 Daytona Beach en-US schools will receive uniformed en-US officers in visible positions to en-US fulfill the mandates.en-US Among other security meaen-US-en-US sures, the bill mandates that en-US districts place a resource offien-US-en-US cer in every school. The bill, en-US passed in the wake of recent en-US school-shooting tragedies, en-US appropriates $97.5 million for en-US resource officers, although en-US that funding falls short in coven-US-en-US ering the costs.en-US Ill be unequivocally clear en-US that Volusia County Schools en-US would prefer municipal police en-US officers and sheriffs deputies en-US (to resource officers). But, en-US there (are) two barriers, en-US Superintendent James Russell en-US said. One is Senate Bill 7026 en-US is only partially funded by the en-US Legislature and also the sheren-US -en-US iffs office and municipal en-US police departments are severeen-US-en-US ly understaffed currently.en-US Additional agreements with en-USSchools get 14 en-US officers, and 14 en-US qualify as guardians en-USCeremony en-US commemorates en-US 1998 wildfires en-USIf you lived in Volusia or en-US Flagler County during the en-US summer of 1998, the wilden-US -en-US fires that seemed to endlessly en-US ravage the area is something en-US you havent forgotten. en-US Neither has the City of en-US Ormond Beach, which was en-US hit hard, so officials put en-US together a commemoration en-US ceremony June 26 to recogen-US-en-US nize all those who played a en-US key role in combating the en-US fires and who aided in recoven-US-en-US ery efforts.en-US Nora Hall lived in Ormond en-US during that time. en-US I lived in Overbrook and I en-US remember coming home en-US from work one day early and en-US all the deer were in my front en-US yard because the fire was en-US coming up the Tomoka foren-US -en-US est behind our house and en-US was running the deer out of en-US the forest, Ms. Hall said. en-US The soot would fall out of en-US the sky and it looked like big en-US snowflakes, it was crazy. I en-US would take hurricanes, en-US drought, anything except en-US fires. Fires are the worst. It en-US jumped the interstate, it en-US jumped U.S. 1, it jumped the en-US river. It is really hard to conen-US -en-US trol.en-US On July 1, 1998, residents en-US were ordered to evacuate en-US Ormond Beach. Interstate en-US 95 closed from Jacksonville en-US to the State Road 528 in Breen-US -en-US vard County. On July 2, en-US 40,000 additional residents en-US fled their homes over a en-US three-county area, according en-US to Mayor Bill Partington. en-US On July 3, all Flagler resien-US -en-US dents were ordered to evacuen-US -en-US ate. Fires had burned half a en-US million acres in Florida with en-US Ormond Beach the hardest en-US hit area in Volusia County en-US where 137,000 acres burned.en-US Mayor Partington gave an en-US opening address and proclaen-US -en-US mation lauding many heroes en-US for that time. en-USRaces en-US feature en-US Dale Jr. en-US in the en-US boothen-USSummer race weekend kicks en-US into high gear at 6 p.m. Friday, en-US Nov. 6, with NASCAR Amerien-US-en-US ca in the UNOH Fanzone at en-US Daytona International Speeden-US-en-US wday, featuring Dale Earnen-US-en-US hardt Jr. first appearance with en-US the NBC broadcast team.en-US The highlights of the weeken-US -en-US end, of course, are the en-US Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 at en-US 7:30 p.m. Friday and the 60en-US then-US en-US Coke Zero Sugar 400 at 7 p.m. en-US Saturday.en-US Mr. Earnhardt, who retired en-US from full-time competition at en-US the end of 2017, is beginning en-US his first season in the televien-US -en-US sion booth serving as an anaen-US-en-US lyst for NBC Sports. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USIt was 20 years ago in June, en-US one of the hottest, driest Junes en-US on record, that we suffered as a en-US city the fires of 1998. The comen-US -en-US memoration is to show respect en-US for and remembrance of an en-US event. We are not celebrating en-US wildfires, but we are celebraten-US -en-US ing our hometown super en-US heroes and our fantasticen-US comen-US -en-US munity spirit that helped save en-US Ormond Beach as well as en-US other communities during en-US those wildfires.en-US Honorees included former en-US Mayor and Circuit Judge en-US David Hood, former Fire en-US Chief Barry Baker, former en-US Volusia County Sheriff Ben en-US Johnson, former State Sen. en-US Evelyn Lynn, former Conen-US -en-US gresswoman Tilly Fowler, foren-US -en-US mer Ormond Beach Police en-US Chief Larry Mathieson, and en-US Peggy Farmer, who was a driven-US -en-US ing force behind putting en-US together the ceremony and for en-US coordinating assistance during en-US the fires. en-US Tim Curtis, co-owner of en-US Houligans, was given special en-US recognition as the Ormond en-US Beach restaurant stepped up en-US and pen-US rovided 24-hour service en-US and served 22,000 meals to en-US firefighters, who came from 42 en-US states. en-US Another business, Bodies by en-US Tasso, also was acknowledged en-US for providing showers and a en-US place to rest. Pastor Rick Cobb, en-US who gave an invocation, was en-US lauded by Mayor Partington en-US for allowing Riverbend Comen-US -en-US munity Church to become en-US headquarters for the police en-US and fire departments as well as en-US the media and Red Cross en-US during the fires. The commuen-US-en-US nity as a whole wen-USas recognized en-US by Mayor Partington in his en-US remarks including other busien-US -en-US nesses and rotary members. en-US He named every current city en-US employee who was working en-US during the fires of 1998, staten-US-en-US ing that every city employee en-US played a part in helping others en-US during that time, naming en-US them all as super heroes to be en-US honored.en-US Ormond Beach Fire Chief en-US Robert Mandarino, who is en-US retiring June 29, was a fireen-US -en-US fighter then. He said training en-US has improved.en-US The Florida Fire Chiefs en-US Association has also upped the en-US training, Chief Mandarino en-US said. When we used to go to en-US the school, one of the things en-US we diden-USnt do was learn about en-US wild land fire battles. Now en-US thats part of the curriculum en-US for anyone going to fire school. en-US That has helped us tremenen-US -en-US dously as far as trying to mitien-US -en-US gate any fires we have in the en-US area. We have come a long way en-US since 1998. We make quick en-US attacks on anything we have. en-US He menten-US ioned the automaten-US -en-US ic mutual aid responses now in en-US place, too. en-US Former Fire Chief Baker en-US said, It was really community en-US that humbled us all. We could en-US not have done what we did en-US without this community. It en-US was just unbelievable. It was en-US great. en-US At the time of the fires, Ms. en-US Farmer had just taken a job en-US with the Ormond Beach en-US Chamber of Commerce. She en-US worked with then Congressen-US -en-US woman Tilly Fowler and then en-US Mayor Hood to get firefighters en-US needed helicopters and bucken-US -en-US ets quickly. To this day she en-US advocates for her city and en-US chairs the North U.S. 1 coalien-US -en-US tion. I remember what hapen-US -en-US pened at Houligans and how en-US we had so many donations en-US coming in, she said. en-US Mary Lou Kenzik was wearen-US -en-US ing the original shirt sold as a en-US fundraiser in 1998, I survived en-US the Florida firestorm 1998. en-USShe volunteered at Houlien-US -en-US gans and her husband was in a en-US Rotary Club then.en-US When they put out the call en-US for help, we went down there, en-US my kids went, our neighbors en-US went, the Rotary went, Ms. en-US Kenzik said. It was just a fanen-US -en-US tastic thing to see, plus we en-US were all nervous, we had a lot en-US of nervous energy to do someen-US -en-US thing. The businesses were en-US closed, the air was horrendous. en-US It was a very nerve-wracking en-US time. en-US The commemoration closed en-US with Lori Partington singing en-US God Bless the USA with en-US audience members joining in.en-US Rutledge Wood, NASCAR en-US on NBCs features reporter, en-US will join Mr. Earnhardt, a two-en-US time Daytona 500 champion, en-US to host NASCAR America, en-US which also will be broadcast en-US on NBCSN.en-US Drivers scheduled to appear en-US on the hour-long show are en-US 2016 Daytona 500 champion en-US Denny Hamlin, 2018 Daytona en-US 500 champion Austin Dillon, en-US defending Coke Zero Sugar en-US 400 champion Ricky Stenen-US -en-US house Jr. and Bubba Wallace.en-US There will be events en-US throughout the day Friday and en-US Saturday at the speedway, en-US including driver appearances.en-US The band Max Impact will en-US perform at 2:30 p.m. Friday en-US and 2 p.m. Saturday on the en-US main stage of the UNOH Fanen-US -en-US zoneen-US The UNOH Fanzone is a en-US sprawling entertainment space en-US for race fans in the heart of the en-US World Center of Racing. en-US Also on the schedule for Frien-US -en-US day in the Fanzone will be the en-US NASCAR Xfinity Series driver en-US autograph session from 4:30-en-US 5:15 p.m.en-US An autograph session with en-US Medal of Honor recipients in en-US the Fanzone will be at 3:45 en-US p.m. Saturday with a driver en-US appearance by Daytona 500 en-US Champion Joey Logano on the en-US main stage at 4 p.m.en-US Country music star Josh en-US Turner will perform a pre-race en-US concert on the pit road stage at en-US 4:55 p.m.en-US After the checkered flag for en-US the Coke Zero Sugar 400, the en-US sky will be lit up above the en-US speedways 2.5-mile tri-oval en-US with one of the largest fireen-US -en-US works shows in the Southeast. en-US A tradition that began with en-US the inaugural nighttime runen-US-en-US ning of the Monster Energy en-US NASCAR Cup Series event en-US back in 1998, Fireworks By en-US Santore, based in nearby en-US Flagler County, will showcase en-US the 15-minute patriotic celeen-US -en-US bration, which includes a en-US one-minute, 30-second grand en-US finale. en-US For tickets to the DIS events, en-US visiten-US daytonainternationalen-US-en-US speedway.com en-US or call (800) en-US PITSHOP. exp 8/31/2018 exp 8/31/2018 exp 8/31/2018VALPLAST FLEXIBLE PARTIAL Takes up to two weeks to make$950OWNER/DENTIST DR. Russ was one of the en-US most beloved racing figures to en-US ever grace these shores. A true en-US gentleman in all aspects. He en-US could find something nice to en-US say about everyone he en-US encountered.en-US Russ once told me I had en-US staged the best car show he en-US had ever seen (I doubt that.) en-US He was just that kind of fellow. en-US Although his racing career en-US was brief and fairly unremarken-US -en-US able, he was the kind of driver en-US that made NASCAR what it is en-US today. en-US He ben-US egan in 1953 and quit en-US in 1957 with his last race on en-US the famous beach road course en-US in Ponce Inlet. Russ ran that en-US race three times and usually en-US finished in the middle of the en-US pack. He did finish in the top en-US 10 five times in his cup career en-US at other tracks, but I dont en-US think he would mind if I en-US called him a journeyman. A en-US steady performer who was en-US under-funded and en-US under-sponsored, he was en-US always ready to run. en-US Russ is most remembered en-US for his spectacular wreck in en-US 1956 on the beach course. en-US Ten-US rying to complete an inside en-US pass where the sand portion of en-US the track went to asphalt, Russ en-US hit the soft sand and rolled his en-US No. 226 Mercury, at times en-US going end over end. Russ en-US survived the wreck with en-US minor injuries and the photo en-US spread that came out in Life en-US Magazine would be with him en-US for the rest of his life. Several en-US pages of close up photos of the en-US red and white Merc flipping en-US would be his calling card. en-US No, Russ Truelove would en-US never find the success of en-US Fireball Roberts, Buck Baker en-US or Paul Goldsmith, but that en-US single wreck may have done en-US more for NASCAR than any en-US win could have. The world en-US saw large pictures of the thrills en-US and spills stock car racing en-US could give on the worlds most en-US unusual racetrack and Russ en-US was at the wheel. en-US Down through the years, he en-US would proudly parade his en-US 1956 Mercury in all of the en-US events staged by The Living en-US Legends of Auto Racing. Each en-US Speed Weeks, his car would be en-US on display at Racings North en-US Turn in Ponce Inlet. That en-US restaurant is operated by race en-US fans Walt and Rhonda en-US Glasnak and sits near the place en-US where Russ had that wild ride en-US on the beach. The Glasnaks en-US have filled their place with en-US racing memorabilia and, en-US although Mr. Truelove has en-US passed, I am sure he will live en-US on there. en-US For those of us who love en-US auto racing, en-US it will be difficult en-US to consider Russ will no en-US longer be with us. Every en-US single time. en-US Now, my wife is a fastidious bookkeeper and is always able to en-US identify these overcharges, and every doctor and/or dentist en-US office has been expedient with refunding the overcharge or en-US crediting our accounts. Of en-US course, out of at least 10 grown ups in the group, not one was en-US watching the children. The children ranging from 5 to maybe, if en-US lucky, 10 years old. The children running back and forth from en-US the surf to the group area. Its a wonder that they didnt get run en-US over not that the drivers were not paying attention, but the en-US children had no clue. One child, who looked about 5, almost ran en-US into the side of a van. en-US The adults still not paying any attention to the children, as if en-US they didnt have any children, sitting in their lounge chairs. What en-US was even worse is that when the kids were in the water, no parent en-US was even close to supervise. The distance had to be at least 200 en-US feet from group area to the shore line. en-US What has happened to parents today. My children never left en-US my side while at the beach, and that was before the so-called en-US no-drive zones. Ill guarantee, that if one of the children got hurt, en-US the parent would be blaming the vehicle driver, or the lifeguard en-US for not watching their children. Its a shame what has happened en-US to todays society and, of course, as most will say, Oh, my child en-US was such a good child, and would never do anything like that. en-US Wake up parents.en-USIts Independence Dayen-USCan we all please call our nations birthday by its true name, en-US lest we forget what we are celebrating? The en-US median price, where half sold en-US for more and half for less, was en-US at $209,900, up 11.2 percent. en-US Condo sales were at 291, en-US down 13.6 percent, which the en-US median price was at $199,600, en-US up 7.5 percent.en-US What all those numbers en-US show is a healthy housing en-US market with a little too much en-US price escalation, part of what en-US will keep housing growth en-US from getting too overheated. en-US Besides rising prices, the en-US Federal Reserve Board also is en-US raising interest rates, making en-US buying a house even more en-US expensive. That adds to the en-US need for local governments to en-US find ways to get more en-US affordable housing built.en-US But then the anti-growth en-US folks werent spurred by en-US housing alone, even though en-US Coastal Woods in New en-US Smyrna Beach and Latitude en-US Margaritaville in Daytona en-US Beach are scaring the heck out en-US of them. What added to the en-US sudden spurt in growth en-US complaints were all the en-US commercial projects, especialen-US -en-US ly Ormond Pointe and en-US Ormond Central, Tomoka en-US Town Center and the I4 Auto en-US Mall in DeLand.en-US The funny thing about most en-US of these projects is they can be en-US defined as infill development, en-US something smart growth en-US advocates have demanded for en-US years. Ormond Pointe isnt en-US some sprawling development en-US out on the edge of town its in en-US the center of Ormond Beach en-US with the entire necessary en-US infrastructure in place. Its en-US what you want in a project.en-US Granted there have been a en-US few too many huge housing en-US developments built that have en-US added to the sprawl, Venetian en-US Bay sort of in New Smyrna en-US Beach would be an abominaen-US -en-US tion to smart growth advoen-US -en-US cates. The problem with a lot en-US of development, though, is a en-US local government has to en-US decide between approving en-US something they shouldnt and en-US spending years in court for en-US possibly violating private en-US property rights.en-US Of course, none of that en-US matters to the anti-growth en-US crowd, who only see hordes of en-US Huns ready to take up space in en-US those tens of thousands of en-US houses.en-US ***en-US I was starting to think the en-US drought in big real estate deals en-US was going to last for a while, en-US but we finally had one with en-US Hollywood (Florida that is) en-US hotel investor and manager en-US Ad 1 Global buying the en-US Daytona Beach Shores Hotel en-US (formerly Lexington Inn) at en-US 2323 S. The en-US old Sun Motel at 1212 S. en-US Atlantic Ave. and the former en-US ABC liquor store and bar en-US building at 1506 S. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USWen-UShen an item, or a en-US destination, is made en-US available to only a en-US certain group of people, it en-US seems exclusive, so everyone en-US wants the item, or to visit that en-US particular location.en-USBack in the 1970s, when en-US disco was the rage, there was a en-US wild, and wildly popular, en-US nightclub in New York City. en-US Its patrons were famous en-US actors, actresses, singers, en-US musicians and artists. Unless en-US you were someone or knew en-US someone, you didnt get in the en-US door. en-US Im sure there are still places en-US like that today, but none rival en-US the notoriety this particular en-US club attained. Still, when en-US morning came, and the en-US cleaning crew turned on the en-US lights, wasnt this just another en-US nightclub? In this instance, en-US the restrictive entry policy en-US of this club serves as a good en-US analogy for stocks/securities en-US that are only offered to certain en-US individuals, namely, accrediten-US -en-US ed investors. I had someone en-US ask me if those investments en-US are any better than the ones en-US offered to the general public. en-US You might be surprised by the en-US answer.en-US First, well start by defining en-US an accredited investor. en-US According to investor.gov, en-US (an) accredited investor, in en-US the context of a natural en-US person, includes anyone who:en-US Earned income that en-US exceeded $200,000 (or en-US $300,000 together with a en-US spouse) in each of the prior en-US two years, and reasonably en-US expects the same for the en-US current year, oren-US Has a net worth of more en-US than $1 million, either alone en-US or together with a spouse en-US (excluding the value of the en-US persons primary residence).en-US When a company makes an en-US investment available to the en-US general public, there are en-US duties and responsibilities the en-US company has to the investors, en-US and certain prescribed en-US disclosures must be provided. en-US The investment needs to be en-US suitable and appropriate for en-US each customer. en-US When someone is an en-US accredited investor, however, en-US the rules and requirements en-US are lessened for the company en-US offering the investment en-US opportunity. Why? Because it en-US is believed accredited invesen-US -en-US tors are able to bear the risk en-US that accompanies investment en-US in these securities. Accredited en-US investors are aware, or should en-US be aware, these particular en-US offerings contain unique risks, en-US and their entire investment en-US could be lost. en-US So, when you hear an en-US investment is only available to en-US accredited investors, now you en-US know the offering really isnt en-US special in any way, just en-US because it is reserved for en-US certain people. Its not en-US necessarily of any higher en-US value, nor is it any better than en-US any other investment. (Its en-US probably serving the same en-US drinks and spinning the same en-US disco tunes as the club down en-US the street!) The difference is en-US the company offering the en-US security simply doesnt have to en-US follow rules and regulations en-US that are as strict, when making en-US it available to accredited en-US investors.en-US David D. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill A-9en-US There is an ulterior motive en-US to creating a great youth sports en-US program, Mr. OBrien said. en-US We are making the bet that en-US youth sports are the key to a en-US lot of things. If we create great en-US athletes in Volusia County, en-US they are going to come back en-US here and be part of this comen-US-en-US munity for the long term. Ecoen-US -en-US nomic impact is going to be en-US big. en-US He estimated impact will be en-US about $20 million annually for en-US Volusia County and the en-US region.en-US We are trying to create an en-US environment and community en-US space that everybody will love en-US and enjoy, Mr. OBrien said. en-US Collaboration is the new en-US economy. We hope that people en-US will book events. High school en-US football will never be the same. en-US We are trying to create an en-US event, not just a game. en-US One of the unique events en-US coming Sept. 15 will be the en-US Heroes Cup, police vs. firemen en-US playing soccer with proceeds en-US donated to their favorite charien-US -en-US ty. en-US I am all about that stadium en-US being very diverse and being en-US there for everybody, Mr. en-US OBrien said. We are (even) en-US going to have a bike week en-US event.en-US The stadium will continue en-US to serve as home field for the en-US Bethune-Cookman Wildcats en-US football team. en-US A stadium this size on the en-US I-95 corridor with Orlandos en-US airport, Sanford and Daytona en-US Beach, and all the hotel space, en-US this will be a natural jewel for en-US sports tourism in this marketen-US -en-US place, said Bethune-Cooken-US-en-US man Universitys athletic en-US director Lynn Thompson. en-US Sports does something that en-US politics cant do, it allows us to en-US huddle up. We are so proud to en-US be part of this.en-US Daytona Beach City Comen-US -en-US missioner Paula Reed said, I en-US think it is an excellent opporen-US -en-US tunity for us. I believe that en-US DME has more than proven en-US themselves in our community en-US with what they have already en-US done. So why not shake a hand en-US and have a plan and make a en-US difference for our community en-US for the young people that they en-US are serving, the difference it is en-US going to make for Bethune en-US Cookman and for Mainland en-US and for Seabreeze High School en-US playing in a more recent and en-US renovated facility. We have en-US something to definitely look en-US forward to. en-US Commissioen-US ner Reed added en-US the venue will have more to en-US offer than just sporting events.en-US One of those events the renen-US-en-US ovated stadium will house will en-US be STEMFEST Sept. 24-25. en-US Amy Monahan, STEM speen-US -en-US cialist for Volusia County en-US Schools, said she was at the en-US announcement because of the en-US partnership DME has with the en-US schools. en-US STEMFEST is a big event en-US to be put on in September to en-US showcase what STEM is all en-US about in our community and en-US really in the country to our en-US students, and what our stuen-US -en-US dents do in STEM, Ms. Monaen-US-en-US han said. They want to do en-US more events at the stadium en-US and this is one of the big sponen-US-en-US sored events that we are going en-US to do. en-US Stadium reen-USnovations will en-US include a redesigned and en-US expanded concourse area; a en-US renovated VIP space with theen-US-en-US ater seating; an open-air VIP en-US club on the fourth floor, en-US remodeled locker rooms; conen-US-en-US cessions upgrades including en-US adding pizza, ice cream and en-US popcorn to the menu, a retail en-US store providing B-CU and en-US high school athletics merchanen-US-en-US dise; and a 5K track that will en-US be built to host local races.en-US Also, a 50,000to 100,000 en-US square-foot fieldhouse will be en-US built on the LPGA Boulevard en-US side of the stadium. The field en-US-en-US house will have NCAA Divien-US -en-US sion I-level locker rooms for en-US both home and away teams, a en-US performance and training cenen-US -en-US ter, athletic assessment areas, en-US rehabilitation equipment, a en-US recovery center, and other en-US community space. en-US Renovations already are en-US underway, and improvements en-US to the outside of the stadium, en-US concourse area expansion and en-US VIP suites are expected to be en-US completed by August. The staen-US-en-US dium will be expanded to seat en-US 15,000. All renovations, en-US including building the fielden-US -en-US house, are anticipated to be en-US finished by September 2020.en-US For more information, visit en-US daytonastadium.com. en-USA-12 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USCen-USapt. Brad Kayholm en-US knows I am a dedicated en-US light tackle fisherman, en-US so when he called to invite me en-US along on a trip and said to en-US bring a heavy rod, he had my en-US attention. en-US Fishing in the inshore with en-US offshore tackle is something I en-US have only done two or three en-US times in my 50-plus years en-US here. When I showed up at a en-US downtown New Smyrna en-US Beach boat ramp, I had to ask en-US him once more if he was en-US serious. He was and I put my en-US No. 4,000 Penn Reel, loaded en-US with 25-pound test, into the en-US boat. en-US If you saw the column last en-US week, you know that on this en-US trip I landed my all time en-US largest red drum. That fish en-US was also one of the largest reds en-US I have ever seen. en-US As we pulled out into the en-US darkness of morning, Brads en-US dad Rick and I both went over en-US the medical report. I told of en-US the slow progress my banged en-US up ankle was making and Rick en-US told me of his serious internal en-US problems. en-US We idled slowly with Capt. en-US Brad staring at the big color en-US fish finder. Finally he pulled en-US to a stop and said, lets fish! en-US Brad and I both made a cast en-US into the dim light. Folks, en-US young Brad has only been en-US guiding for a little over three en-US years, but in that time has en-US quickly moved to the top in en-US his field. I am constantly en-US amazed at the success we have en-US had together. en-US First, Capt. Brad put me on en-US a 44-inch redfish that until en-US this day would be my largest. en-US Next, we had a trip where I en-US caught more gator trout in en-US one morning than I ever had. en-US After that, we went a little way en-US off shore where I caught seven en-US amberjacks that were all over en-US 20 pounds. Our trip south of en-US Haulover Canal yielded big en-US black drum, also in the 20 en-US pound range. en-US On this morning, the en-US 47-inch red drum would be en-US larger than any I ever dreamed en-US I would catch. Five great trips en-US with trophies coming in each en-US time. You cant beat that! en-US I cant tell you how Capt. en-US Brad became so good so fast, en-US but hard work, intelligence en-US and a love for the sport had to en-US be involved. For most of my en-US life I have had salt water in my en-US veins, but this kid has me beat. en-US I envy him for the successful en-US life on the water he will surely en-US have. en-US On this trip, I had the en-US chance to land three big reds. en-US With one the fight just lasted en-US too long and the hook finally en-US came loose. With the other, I en-US pulled a bonehead rookie en-US mistake and allowed the fish en-US to get to the prop, which sliced en-US through the line easily. In my en-US defense, the fish was even en-US stronger that the 47-inch one en-US and I had just come off a long en-US fight with a huge stingray that en-US was as stubborn as they come. en-US I was tired. OK, enough en-US excuses. I just blew it. en-US After the red fishing slowed, en-US Brad asked me if I wanted to en-US catch a snook (a trick quesen-US -en-US tion?) I told him sure and he en-US began to cruise the private en-US boat docks on the west side of en-US the Indian River. After passing en-US up 10 or 15, he pulled up and en-US we both made a cast under a en-US dock. I had now switched to en-US my usual light rod and, on my en-US second throw, I had a nice en-US little snook that entertained us en-US with three jumps. en-US This trip would create great en-US memories of good fishing and en-US good company. Please keep en-US this column until your en-US northern visitors arrive. Have en-US them give Capt. Brad a call at en-US (386) 314-8553. What a great en-US gift a trip with Wham Bam en-US Charters would be. We live in en-US a fishermans paradise and en-US Brad Kayholm is the guy who en-US can teach you how to catch en-US them. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill B-3en-USLen-USets talk about the long en-US Fourth of July weekend we en-US are enjoying. en-USOn the Fourth of July 1776, en-US the Second Continental en-US Congress unanimously en-US adopted the Declaration of en-US Independence. It would be en-US 100 years later that Congress en-US passed a law making Indepenen-US -en-US dence Day a federal holiday en-US on June 28, 1870. en-US So what did our founding en-US fathers eat on July 4, 1776, to en-US celebrate the birth of our en-US country? The City Tavern in en-US Philadelphia would have been en-US the place, but unfortunately en-US there is no record of the menu en-US eaten to celebrate that very en-US special day. en-US The food of the times would en-US have been baked or poached en-US salmon, turtle soup, local en-US seafood, salted meats, pickled en-US tongue, wheaten bread, and en-US lots and lots of beer and en-US spirits. The founding fathers en-US loved their spirits! en-US Over the years, the July 4 en-US traditions would evolve and en-US take shape into a picnic en-US celebration for family and en-US friends. In the early 1900s, en-US fried chicken, potato salad, en-US watermelon and the hot dog en-US ruled the day. In the late en-US 1940s, suburban living took en-US hold, and with the introducen-US -en-US tion of charcoal grills, outside en-US grilling was the method of en-US celebrating. Cooking over en-US cheap grills wasnt a great way en-US to cook because most of the en-US food was burned and still not en-US cooked thoroughly. en-US The world of grilling would en-US be changed forever, when in en-US 1952, George Stephen, a en-US welder for Weber Brothers en-US Metal Works, cut a metal en-US water buoy in half. Using the en-US top and bottom and adding en-US vents, he created a grill with en-US even cooking and sealed in the en-US flavor. I guess that is why we en-US eat 150 million hot dogs and en-US 750 million pounds of chicken en-US on the Fourth of July.en-US Thats all great and wonderen-US -en-US ful, but my favorite is someen-US -en-US thing the Navy and Marine en-US Corps cooks prepare on the en-US Fourth of July Chili Mac. en-US Now thats a real celebration in en-US taste for the Fourth of July. en-US Chili Mac also went to the en-US moon with the astronauts. Try en-US my Chili Mac, youll love it. en-US The Chili by itself is pretty en-US good, too.
