en-USRep. Henry: 'Daytona en-US Beach is on its way up'en-USState leaders in Tallahassee have noticed a differen-US -en-US ence in Daytona Beach, according to State Rep. Paten-US -en-US rick Henry, D-Daytona Beach.en-US Rep. Henry, who addressed Daytona Beach City en-US Commission at its meeting June 20, said, The boom en-US that is going on in Daytona is talked about in Tallaen-US -en-US hassee. So, I want to commend this commission for en-US the things you got going on in Daytona. The taren-US -en-US nished image we once had is truly being erased and en-US the City of Daytona Beach is on its way up.en-US Rep. Henry is a former commission member en-US while his siblings are Derrick Henry, Daytona Beach en-US mayor, and Dannette Henry, Zone 5 city commisen-US -en-US sioner.en-US He is concerned by the Legislatures efforts to take en-US power away from city and county governen-US -en-US ments, but he believes a happy medium can en-US be reached.en-US Rep. Henry also noted Daytona Beach is en-US ahead of the curve regarding school safety, en-US because all our schools already have a Dayen-US -en-US tona Beach police officer stationed at the en-US school. en-US The Legislatures unfunded mandates for county en-US school districts is a problem, he said. Just like we en-US fund everything else, we can find a way to make our en-US schools safe. The money is there somewhere. We as en-US legislators are just going to have to step up to the en-US plate and say this is what we want to do. I know for a en-US fact we can secure schools if we just start thinking a en-US little outside the box. en-US Marijuana dispensaries also were mentioned by en-US Rep. Henry as an area Daytona Beach must address en-US as en-US they are being set en-US up throughout the state. en-US Rep. Henry was lauded by commissioners for geten-US -en-US ting a boat inspection bill and the Mary McLeod en-US Bethune statue bill passed as a freshman legislator.en-US Also in the meeting, Tony Grippa and Frank Molen-US-en-US nar of the Beachside Redevelopment Committee en-US implored commissioners to follow the recommenen-US en-USJusen-US t one week after James en-US Dinneen announced he en-US would be leaving his post as en-US Volusia County Manager in en-US January, the Volusia County en-US Council voted 6-1 to approve en-US his request to waive the six-en-US month transitional period in en-US his contract to leave immedien-US -en-US ately.en-US Several county residents, en-US along with Volusia County en-US Sheriff Mike Chitwood, en-US Councilwoman Heather Post en-US and others spoke at an emoen-US -en-US tional council meeting June en-US 19, calling for Mr. Dinneens en-US immediate dismissal from en-US what they called a tenure en-US filled with malfeasance, en-US insubordination and lack of en-US honesty. en-US His early release from his en-US contract, approved 6-1 by en-US council with Ms. Post casting en-US the only vote to terminate en-US based on malfeasance and en-US insubordination, ended his en-US 12 yeen-US ars with the county June en-US 22 and provided a severance, en-US unpaid leave and benefits en-US payout of more than en-US $405,000. Deputy County en-US Manager George Recktenen-US-en-US wald will serve as interim en-US county manager.en-US (Mr. Dinneen) came to en-US me and said he would like to en-US be relieved. He is obligated to en-US give us six months, Volusia en-US County Chair Ed Kelly told en-US the packed council chambers en-US while protesters held up signs en-US calling for the council to en-US fire Mr. Dinneen. In addien-US -en-US tion to that, I didnt want to en-US leave the county in a position en-US without a counen-US ty manager, so en-US I asked (Mr. Recen-US ktenwald) if en-USCouncil waives en-US transition, county en-US manager gone en-USJewish Federation en-US director a tireless en-US humanitarianen-USStage 4 ovarian cancer en-US should slow you down a bit.en-US But in between chemoen-US-en-US therapy treatments, Gloria en-US Max still works seven days a en-US week to make sure programs en-US formed under her 25-year en-US reign as executive director of en-US the Jewish Federation of en-US Volusia and Flagler Counties en-US continue to flourish.en-US Ms. Max, 77, was diagen-US -en-US nosed two and a half years en-US ago and was in remission for en-US 18 months, but the cancer en-US has returned. What hasnt en-US changed is her passion and en-US love for the work she does, en-US despite severe neuropathy en-US and rashes. en-US They dont even know if en-US the chemo is going to work, en-US she said.en-US I go to work every day en-US because it gives me energy, en-US Ms. Max said. If I stayed en-US home, I would pity myself. I en-US see people so much worse en-US than I. When I help someen-US-en-US body, it makes me feel better. en-US I forget about my troubles. en-US Dont pity me. I enjoy helpen-US-en-US ing people. I believe in helpen-US -en-US ing people regardless of race en-US or religion.en-US Programs she has nuren-US -en-US tured include the Jerry en-US Dolinar Food Bank, the en-US School Supply Back Pack en-US program and the newest proen-US -en-US gram, the Disaster Aid proen-US -en-US gram. For the latter, money en-US and/or supplies are sent en-US wherever the need exists, en-US such as internationally to the en-US disadvantaged in Israel. The en-US federation has built nine en-US bomb shelters there, which en-US are used as community cenen-US-en-US ters during the day. Ms. Max en-US noted anti-Semitism still en-US exists and many amazing en-US works of charity are done en-US behind the scenes by Jewish en-US people, especially people en-US from Israel. en-US Still, about 98 percent of en-US the people the federation en-US helps are not Jewish. Also, en-US she noted the federation en-USSchools, en-US hospitals en-US ink pacten-USVolusia County Schools and en-US Florida Hospital inked a five-en-US year, $2 million partnership, en-US the first of its kind in the state en-US for health education.en-US At a special meeting June 19 en-US at Deltona High School, Voluen-US-en-US sia County School Board en-US members voted unanimously en-US to approve the program. Vice en-US Chairman Dr. John Hill was en-US absent.en-US This Florida Hospital en-US Healthy Futures Program is a en-US first of its kind, said David en-US Ottati, Central Florida Hospien-US -en-US tal North Region CEO. This en-US is a cool step in the right direcen-US -en-US tion in having a public entity en-US and a private entity partner for en-US the betterment of the school en-US and the kids.en-US The agreement designates en-US Florida Hospital as the official en-US healthcare champion of Voluen-US -en-US sia County Schools and grants en-US the hospital system official en-US naming rights to each of the en-US health care academies, of en-US which there are six, and nine en-US academic health care proen-US en-USSurf's upen-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USElizabeth Blevins, 7, of Ormond Beach rides a wave during the Volusia/en-US Flagler Surfrider Foundations EcoSurf Kids Clinic at the Hartford Approach en-US in Daytona Beach to celebrate International Surfing Day on Saturday, June en-US 23. He also cauen-US-en-US tioned council members to en-US stay on ten-US opic and discuss only en-US the vote or issue at hand.en-US Were not going to run this en-US like we did the last time, were en-US not going to have scattered en-US comments all over the place, en-US we are going to discuss the en-US issue, Chair Kelly said. The en-US issue is whether or not we are en-US going to relieve him of his en-US obligation. Please be nice. Can en-US you not be nice? I have to put en-US up with this stuff on Faceben-US ook, en-US I shouldnt have to deal with it en-US here.en-US en-US Prior to casting her lone en-US vote for termination with en-US cause, Councilwoman Post en-US said the payout of severance in en-US the county managers contract en-US could be negated by council en-US with such a vote, relieving the en-US county of its obligation to pay. en-US No other council members en-US joined her in that vote.en-US I think just cause has been en-US given repeatedly, she said. I en-US think theres significant cause en-US for insubordination, absoluteen-US-en-US ly. Theres significant cause for en-US misconduct, malfeasance, vioen-US-en-US lation of duties to the county en-US for honesty. All of those are en-US listed in his contract as terms en-US for just cause.en-US County Attorney Dan Ecken-US -en-US ert, however, disagreed, and en-US said he has given his legal en-US opinion that he does not en-US believe there is just cause for en-US those items.en-US Thats my opinion. If you en-US would disagree with that, then en-US respectfully, you would vote en-US against the motion, Mr. Ecken-US-en-US ert said. I really en-US believe beachside isnt getting en-US its fair share of infrastructure en-US (overhaul).en-US Recommendations also en-US included cracking down on en-US code violations and creating en-US space for new hotels and en-US restaurants to be built. en-US Another concept discussed en-US was Daytona embracing a en-US year-long economy rather en-US than being driven by special en-US events.en-US Both speakers were en-US encouraged by new hotels en-US emerging beachside.en-US In other business, commisen-US -en-US sioners unanimously en-US approved rezoning 3.8 acres en-US of land at 605 Glenview Blvd. en-US and 640 N. There is en-US something satisfying about en-US discovering the intricacies of en-US our own make up. Unlike en-US those who think they have en-US lived several past lives and en-US once lived as Alexander The en-US Great or Helen Of Troy, DNA en-US testing is based on hard facts.en-US When this DNA thing en-US became popular, I for one did en-US not buy into the act of taking en-US every DNA result as nothing en-US less than the absolute truth. en-US DNA testing rapidly became en-US irrefutable fact in court cases en-US and many criminals who en-US otherwise would have gone en-US free were jailed. At times, en-US cases were decided solely on en-US that testing and still are.en-US What bothered me from the en-US beginning was not the science, en-US but the people who were en-US performing it. Any time en-US people are involved, there is en-US room for error. Sometimes en-US accidentally, but lately it seems en-US more and more instances of en-US wrongdoing by lab technicians en-US are happening.en-US Any time there is a human en-US element involved there is a en-US possibility of error or outright en-US fraud. Now it turns out en-US samples have been mishanen-US -en-US dled and mislabeled all across en-US the world. In one instance, it en-US was determined two people en-US working in the same lab had en-US managed to mix their own en-US DNA into thousands of en-US samples. In one case a lab en-US worker left a random sample en-US at a crime scene in order to get en-US her boyfriend off the hook for en-US murder. Far fetched? Maybe, en-US but it would be naive to en-US believe that those things wont en-US happen. en-US In Texas, the Dallas testing en-US facility has been shut down en-US after it was discovered en-US hundreds of cases may have en-US been bungled due to faulty en-US DNA testing. In a state where en-US there is more executions than en-US any other, you would think en-US accuracy would be foremost. en-US Their problems go all the way en-US back to 1992 and are now en-US being re-examined. en-US In Australia, a man went to en-US court on a murder charge en-US when his DNA was found at en-US the crime scene. With such en-US fool proof evidence, his en-US attorney told him to plead en-US guilty and try for a lesser en-US sentence. Eventually it was en-US discovered he and a suspect en-US with the same name had their en-US DNA mixed up at the lab and en-US he was released. He spent en-US more than a decade in the en-US pokey. en-US There is a problem with en-US DNA when innocent people en-US who chose to be tested to en-US discover more about their en-US family tree wind up as police en-US evidence in a criminal case. en-US That happened in California en-US when authorities tapped into en-US an ancestry data base and en-US found relatives of the suspect en-US that had been dubbed The en-US Golden State Killer. That en-US resulted in the capture of a en-US 72-year-old former police en-US officer. en-US In another case, a popular en-US ancestry website was hacked en-US and 92 million customers had en-US their DNA in the hands of en-US criminal investigators. Look, en-US when you put your DNA onto en-US the Net, which is what you are en-US doing when en-US you buy into one en-US of those ancestry sites, you en-US open yourself up for all sorts en-US of problems. en-US Right now cold case en-US detectives are subpoenaing en-US those companies for their en-US records so they can search for en-US a distant match that will put en-US them on the right track. We all en-US want the criminals to be en-US caught, but what if your DNA en-US results in a relative going to en-US jail on a false charge? It could en-US happen. Think long and hard en-US before putting your DNA out en-US there. We all love science, but en-US the people who perform it are en-US not perfect.en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. Obviously they are confused. This needs more clarifien-US -en-US cation.en-US We have noticed when stopping either north or south bound en-US to let someone cross, these people crossing have to take a calcuen-US -en-US lated guess if the car coming in the opposite direction is actually en-US going to stop for them as they are half way across.en-US We have observed cars sailing right through.en-US Then there are the ultra polite thinking drivers who decide en-US abruptly to stop where there is no crosswalk. They then wave en-US people across with beach chairs etc. Although this is a kind gesen-US -en-US ture, we have witnessed the potential for rear-end pile ups en-US caused by having to be a mind reader as to these stops. Seems en-US these polite people see what's in front of them with no concern en-US about who is behind them.en-US Either we become consistent with these crossing laws or we en-US will see a tragedy on our roads. Pay attention, it is happening en-US much too often.en-USIn response to: 'Edgewater is not that bad'en-USRegarding Edgewater restaurants, I am a retiree that enjoys en-US good restaurant meals.en-US Edgewater has 30th Street Eatery, Riptides and Florida Roaden-US-en-US house that serves good food.en-US If I am not wanting the locals, it's not a big deal to drive 20 en-US minutes to New Smyrna.en-USIn response to: 'Edgewater is not that bad'en-USI never said I was "retired." I don't know a handful of retirees en-US making a decision on anything. en-US I thought since you knew how many auto and dollar stores en-US there are from here to Daytona Beach, you must have time on en-US your hands. Tell us. How many are there? en-US I volunteer at a food pantry. These people are grateful to have en-US a meal and cold beverage. en-US Summer is challenging. Schools are out and there are families en-US living in their car. The heat can take a toll on anyone living on en-US the street. And you want what again? en-USBetter plans than peopleen-US My rant is about people who want to call plants invasive, but en-US we are the most invasive species on the planet.en-US How are we going to call another species invasive when we are en-US so invasive. I think it is better to have too many plants than en-US humans. en-USDon't pay himen-USJim Dineen is getting almost half a million dollars as severance en-US pay. en-US How many thousands of dollars did he shortchange Volusia en-US County in impact fees. I think we should not pay him. en-USIn response to: 'Service desk snubbed'en-USI can go along with the comment that the service desk should en-US be for service and not for check out. en-US However, since they always do this, they need to make a unien-US -en-US form policy and not leave it up from a clerk to decide who can en-US check out and who cannot.en-USCancel bike dayen-USLast weekend, it was bike day in New Smyrna Beach. en-US I don't know why we put bike lanes in when they won't use en-US them. They want to ride all over the road. Then I went to a en-US restaurant on Flagler Avenue that I go to frequently, and even en-US those people were having trouble with rude bikers.en-US This Bike Day thing needs to be canceled. We don't need this en-US in New Smyrna Beach. en-USIs it really progress?en-USThere are those who define progress as the extent to which en-US they push aside the natural world to make way for money-maken-US-en-US ing ventures and satisfy human ambition, e.g. the Granada en-US Pointe project.en-US Progress is, in essence, the process of moving forward. This en-US may mean improving quality of life. On the other hand, a move en-US forward can take one onto a railroad crossing in the path of an en-US oncoming train. A step forward may send one hurtling over a en-US cliff. en-US So it may be seen that progress, in a positive or negative en-US direction, is indeed in the eye or pocket of the beholder. en-USVote to protect quality of lifeen-USPolitical Action Groups will be backing some New Smyrna en-US Beach mayor and commissioner candidates with unlimited en-US funds.en-US These PACs do not care what impact development has on us. en-US They want only to have nonstop building of chain stores and en-US restaurants and apartments and townhouses and minimum en-US wage jobs.en-US They dont care about our traffic or our environment. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USIen-USd like to remind my en-US readers that I love to get en-US your questions, so keep en-US them coming!en-US I heard from Susan, a en-US woman in New Smyrna en-US Beach, who is trying to decide en-US whether or not to liquidate en-US her Roth IRA. en-US This is what I know about en-US Susan. She is 65, recently en-US retired, married, has Individuen-US -en-US al Retirement Accounts and a en-US $20,000 Roth IRA, which shes en-US owned for more than five en-US years; she and her husband en-US own a home worth $250,000 en-US and they have a mortgage of en-US $100,000. Her problem, en-US however, is she doesnt have en-US any cash in case of emergenen-US -en-US cies. en-US I commend Susan for en-US planning ahead! You might en-US know from my previous en-US columns, I am a big believer en-US in maintaining a hardy en-US emergency account. You never en-US know when the car will break en-US down, the refrigerator will en-US quit, or youll be required to en-US meet large deductibles not en-US covered by your insurance en-US policies. en-US My recommendation could en-US be for, or against, liquidation en-US of Susans Roth account. A en-US Roth can serve as a suppleen-US -en-US mental emergency fund en-US without liquidating it, as long en-US as the cash is not needed en-US immediately. Should an en-US emergency arise, and Susan en-US can wait a week or two to en-US receive her funds, the Roth en-US doesnt really have to be en-US converted to cash beforehand.en-US However, and this is a big en-US however, if the Roth money is en-US invested in the stock market, en-US the value of the Roth account en-US can, and will, fluctuate. en-US It wasnt too many years ago en-US the stock market plunged 40 en-US percent. If that were to happen en-US when Susan needed money en-US from her Roth account, the en-US current $20,000 value could en-US sink to just $12,000! If this en-US potential volatility is a en-US concern to Susan, I would en-US recommend she liquidate part en-US or all of the account and en-US deposit the money in her en-US bank. She wont be earning en-US much interest, but she will feel en-US more confident the full en-US amount will be there if she en-US needs it. Plus, she will have en-US quick and easy access to the en-US funds. en-US Another option for Susan en-US might be to consider the en-US equity in her home for en-US potential cash. She could en-US apply for a traditional en-US refinance, a reverse mortgage en-US loan or reverse mortgage line en-US of credit. She would still have en-US to pay homeowners insurance, en-US property taxes and home en-US maintenance, but she would en-US gain access to the additional en-US cash these products could en-US afford. en-US Whats great about Susans en-US situation is that she doesnt en-US have to take money from her en-US regular IRAs, because she has en-US other options available. en-USA-12 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USI en-USmet Capt. Brad Kayholm in en-US New Smyrna Beach at the en-US Outrigger boat ramp right en-US at 5:30 a.m. en-US Now that may sound en-US insignificant, but I had to en-US leave my home in Ormond-en-US by-the-Sea at 4:45 a.m. That en-US requires a dedication that only en-US a few anglers will understand. en-US As I pulled up in the dark, en-US sure enough Brad and his dad, en-US Rick, were sitting in the en-US already launched boat. I was en-US pleased to see Rick along for I en-US knew he had been battling en-US serious health problems. Big en-US Daddy Kayholm said his only en-US sacrifice would be to not fish en-US on this trip. He was along for en-US the company and spectacle en-US that usually happens when we en-US three get together. en-US A couple miles down the en-US Indian River and we slowed so en-US Capt. Brad could view his new en-US Hummingbird Helex fish en-US finder. The thing looks like a en-US 16-inch color TV, and soon en-US Brad saw what he was looking en-US for. No anchoring on this en-US modern vessel. The big remote en-US control trolling motor would en-US automatically hold us in one en-US place despite the rapidly en-US moving tide. en-US We baited with four-inch en-US live croakers and I scored first. en-US A hard hit made me believe I en-US had a red drum, but it turned en-US out to be a huge sail catfish. As en-US it was released, we couldnt en-US help but admire the long fins en-US of the big fish. It probably en-US went about 7 pounds with a en-US head as big as a large grapeen-US -en-US fruit. en-US It was right at dawn when I en-US hooked up with a large red. en-US This fight would be monuen-US -en-US mental. Four long runs with en-US me only able to hang on and en-US hope the reels drag would not en-US seize up before the monster en-US began doing that telltale head en-US shake. en-US And what a head it was! en-US Brad put the net under the big en-US red drum, but only the head en-US would fit. Now understand, en-US Capt. Brad is a full-sized guy, en-US but for just a second I was not en-US sure he would be strong en-US enough to get the thing into en-US the boat. en-US You may recall a couple en-US years back, Brad and his en-US Wham Bam Charters put me en-US on my all-time largest red fish en-US at 44 inches in length. This en-US one was 47-inches long and, en-US although we didnt weigh it, en-US we all agreed it had to go en-US about 35 pounds. After posing en-US with the big fish, I kissed it en-US and set it free. en-US After that we each caught en-US more very large sail cats and en-US then I was on with a red larger en-US than the first. The fight just en-US lasted too long (for me) and en-US the hook finally pulled free. en-US Could it have been a 50-inchen-US -en-US er? Ill never know, but it felt en-US like it. en-US My next hookup was with a en-US stingray that was at least 30 en-US inches wide. That big flattie en-US went to the bottom and just en-US stayed there. It became a test en-US of wills and equipment, but I en-US won. Just then Im thinking is en-US everything oversized in this en-US place?en-US Folks, I have often told you en-US about young Brad Kayholm en-US and his Wham Bam Charters. en-US As we all know, fishing is en-US unpredictable, but Capt. Brad en-US is as consistent as any angler I en-US have ever fished with. To get en-US in on this kind of fun, give en-US him a call at (386) 314-8553 en-US and get on his waiting list. The en-US next time he gets on such a en-US fishing bonanza he will give en-US you a call to join him. I have en-US been fishing for red drum for en-US more than 60 years and he has en-US put me on my best ones twice en-US in recent years. Amazing! Call en-US Capt. They were no en-US greens used at all. It has been en-US Americanized throughout the en-US years. en-US Salad comes from the Latin en-US word herba salta or salted en-US herbs. The Romans would eat en-US greens with a dressing en-US containing a lot of salt. Salads en-US have a rich history. Each en-US generation of civilizations en-US have left their mark on this en-US corner of the culinary world, en-US however, through the ages, en-US the salad remained greens or en-US cooked vegetables with large en-US amounts of oil, a little vinegar, en-US and seasoning. They were en-US served wet. en-US It wasnt until the early part en-US of the 20th century that en-US Americans brought the lowly en-US salad to great heights with the en-US development of salad en-US dressings. Commercial en-US dressing and sauces were not en-US available until Joe Marzetti, a en-US restaurant owner in 1896, en-US began serving a variety of en-US dressings to his customers. en-US He eventually when on to en-US bottle these dressings and sell en-US them to the public. Richard en-US Hellmann, a deli owner in en-US New York, began selling his en-US blue ribbon mayonnaise to en-US the public after a strong en-US consumer demand.en-US The American public took en-US it from there. Ambrosia, en-US carrot, chicken, shrimp, en-US Cobb, cole slaw, potato salad, en-US Waldorf and, of course, the en-US great milestone in salad histoen-US -en-US ry Jell-O salads! In 1930, en-US lime Jell-O was introduced, en-US which triggered decades of en-US molded salads. I am afraid I en-US still think of Jell-O as a en-US dessert. en-US Salads are popular because en-US they are healthy and easy to en-US prepare. They have evolved en-US into an appetizer, entre or en-US dessert. The ingredients can en-US be anything you want them to en-US be to mix together with the en-US appropriate dressing. I love to en-US take leftovers and make en-US salads. So, with that in mind, en-US I have included some simple en-US dressing recipes you can en-US make at home to add to en-US anything you want to mix en-US together, well almost anyen-US -en-US thing.
