en-USIconic visionary and interen-US -en-US national activist Dr. Mary en-US McLeod Bethune, who en-US founded Bethune-Cookman en-US University, will soon have en-US her statue gracing the halls of en-US the U.S. Capitols Statuary en-US Hall in Washington D.C. en-US Money is still needed for en-US the statue although signifien-US -en-US cant progress has been made. en-US Meanwhile, Dr. Bethunes en-US Daytona Beach home, one of en-US Floridas National Historic en-US Landmarks since 1974 situaten-US -en-US ed on campus grounds, conen-US -en-US tinues to welcome visitors. en-US Dr. Bethune will be the en-US first statue in the National en-US Statuary Hall to honor an en-US African-American commisen-US-en-US sioned by a state and only the en-US 10th woman. Hers replaces en-US Gen. Edmund Kirby Smiths en-US statue.en-US National Statuary Hall is a en-US section in the U.S. Capitol en-US that houses 100 sculptures of en-US prominent Americans, two en-US per state. John Gorrie, physien-US-en-US cian, scientist and inventor, is en-US the other sculpture repreen-US -en-US senting Florida.en-US Joy Jones, B-CU director en-US of communications, said en-US $185,000 in cash has been en-US raised and $97,000 in pledges en-US have been made, getting the en-US project closer to a goal of en-US $400,000.en-US We are more than halfway en-US there, Ms. Jones said. There en-US is still an opportunity to be en-US involved.en-US The effort should go interen-US -en-US national, she said. (Dr. en-US Bethune) was at the founden-US -en-US ing of the United Nations, en-US one of the few African Ameren-US -en-US icans there. She was big on en-US assuring women and minorien-US -en-US ties had equal rights. Her en-US scope and reach were global. en-US She earned Haitis highest en-US award. She was a convener of en-US all races. She was ahead of en-US her own time, a genius in her en-US own right. Albert Einstein en-US had written to her to enlist en-US her support as they were en-US talking about atomic weapen-US -en-US ons. They were talking about en-US their support for humanen-US-en-US kind.en-US Sandra Zow-Johnson, en-US coordinator of the Mary en-US McLeod-Bethune Foundaen-US-en-US tion, is excited about the laten-US-en-US est effort to honor Dr. en-US Bethune. I am a graduate of en-US (B-CU) Class of 1985. My en-US connection to the university en-US is great. Really, from that en-US In what has become a tradition, service providers en-US from across Volusia County will gather from 9 a.m. en-US to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Salvation Army at en-US 1555 LPGA Blvd. in Daytona Beach so homeless en-US veterans and veterans in need can get an array of en-US services.en-US Officially the Homeless and In Need Stand Down, en-US the annual event is geared to homeless veterans, but en-US no one will be turned away. Services will include free en-US haircuts and food, medical services, access to Veteren-US -en-US ans Administration and veterans services, employen-US-en-US ment resources, shelter and clothing information, en-US and counseling and vocational services. en-US At least 20 agencies will provide immediate seren-US -en-US vices or information about services. Sponsors en-US include Goodwill, Second Harvest Food en-US Bank, the Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans en-US of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, U.S. en-US Department of Veterans Affairs, Volusia en-US County and Career Source Flagler/Volusia. en-US Joe Roberts, a marine corps veteran and en-US disabled veterans outreach representative en-US from Career Source, is the point person for this en-US years Stand Down. en-US We were fortunate to be able to use the Salvation en-US Army (and) we are grateful for what Joe Rosa does en-US and the post here, Mr. Roberts said. Joe came en-US through with a donation that is so thoughtful. We en-US are going to have the Red, White and Blue Team en-US providing some manpower for us.en-US Flagler Technical Institute is sending a couple of en-US peoen-US -en-US ple down and they en-US are providing free haircuts throughout the en-US whole event. They have their barber chairs shipped en-US down, Mr. Roberts said. We have found a lot of en-US veterans can talk to other veterans and know where en-US they are coming from a lot of the time.en-US He added, Career Source has been starting the en-USVeteran Stand Down en-US slated at Salvation Army en-USHe certainly can fly around en-US a racetrack, but up and comen-US-en-US ing NASCAR star Chase en-US Elliott also can fly planes. en-US He flew his own plane, a en-US Cessna Conquest II turboen-US -en-US prop, into Daytona Beach en-US June 6 to help promote the en-US 60th annual Coke Zero Sugar en-US 400, which is set for the eveen-US -en-US ning of July 7 at Daytona en-US International Speedway. en-US Mr. Elliott, 22, drives the en-US No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts en-US Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. He en-US has two victories at DIS, one en-US in the NASCAR Xfinity en-US Series, the other in a Duel at en-US Daytona qualifying race for en-US the Daytona 500. He also has en-US captured two Daytona 500 en-US poles, in 2016-17. His father en-US Bill Elliott won the Daytona en-US 500 in 1985 and and the en-US NASCAR championship in en-US 1988.en-US Mr. Elliott spent time in a en-US state-of-the-art, CRJ-200 en-US Regional Jet Flight Training en-US Device otherwise known en-US as a simulator alongside en-US Capt. Tom Peterson, Canaen-US -en-US dair Regional Jet Program en-US Manager at Embry-Riddle en-US Aeronautical University. The en-US device mirrors a 50-passenen-US -en-US ger commercial plane. en-US We have all the really cool en-US stuff here, all the technology, en-US Capt. Peterson said. It en-US is a combined effort. I was en-US aware of the past stand downs. en-US I saw a need for it because en-US homeless veterans came into en-US my office asking for help. I en-US work with the barriers to them en-US getting a job. Being homeless en-US is a barrier to being able to en-US maintain a job. en-US VFW Post 3282 in Port en-US Orange gave Mr. Roberts a en-US check from members for $500 en-US as well as another check for en-US $200 from auxiliary members en-US to help with expenses. Mr. en-US Rosa is the posts commander en-US until June 24 when he becomes en-US the VFW District 19 senior en-US vice commander. en-US It was quite successful last en-US year. I saw the homeless (veten-US -en-US erans) coming in with shopen-US -en-US ping carts and leaving with en-US these carts full of stuff. It really en-US impacted the homeless, Mr. en-US Rosa said. Our (VFW) focus en-US is always to help veterans first. en-US It is important right before en-US hurricane season that they get en-US as much supplies and things en-US that they need and know en-US where to go. Not only does this en-US bring them essentials that they en-USHometown News file photoen-USSammie Tillman, left, of Daytona Beach gets his haircut by William Moore and en-US Larry Lowery, right, has his hair done by Gabriel Mercado of the International en-US Hair Academy during the Veterans Stand Down at the Volusia County Adminisen-US -en-US trative Services parking lot in Daytona Beach last year. Mr. Holub has received en-US a lot of flak for clearing the en-US woodsy area on West Granada en-US Boulevard for his latest en-US project. The local citizenry are en-US up in arms over the loss of the en-US woodlands and the increased en-US traffic it is expected to create. en-US Now, I dont know Mr. en-US Holub (though we met briefly en-US back in the 90s), but I would en-US wager that if you asked him if en-US he cared about the environen-US -en-US ment, he would answer of en-US course. Most people would at en-US least say that.en-US It is Mr. Holubs lot in life to en-US constantly look for undisen-US -en-US turbed pieces of nature where en-US he might erect convenience en-US stores, fast food joints and en-US other businesses. I suppose en-US someone has to do it.en-US To be fair, the property en-US where Granada Pointe is en-US going up was probably en-US destined to become apartment en-US buildings, and few would en-US want that. Progress, however, en-US will not be stopped. Of course, en-US it would have been better to en-US just let the woods sit as it had en-US since Henry Flagler closed his en-US nine-hole golf course there, en-US but we all know that could not en-US last indefinitely. en-US Back when I was a contracen-US -en-US tor in the cramped Chicago en-US suburbs, I sometimes felt en-US pangs of guilt when I had to en-US take out a hedge where small en-US birds nested or a tree that was en-US home to woodpeckers and en-US squirrels. It was a cost of doing en-US business. Every contractor en-US pays that cost in some way. en-US One thing is for sure. When en-US you start taking out stands of en-US trees, you are going to hear en-US about it. Mr. Holub has heard en-US plenty. The fight over Granada en-US Pointe has been especially en-US dirty, with old accusations en-US being brought up that have en-US absolutely nothing to do with en-US the work being done. Both en-US sides are going for the throat. en-US Too late! Granada Pointe will en-US be up and running in a short en-US time. en-US The citizens of Ormond en-US Beach, and every other en-US community in Volusia en-US County, can now only work to en-US be sure all future planning will en-US be done in the sunshine.en-US To be sure, the mayor and en-US city commissioners of en-US Ormond Beach did everything en-US by the book. Notices were sent en-US out when the work was still in en-US the planning stages as the law en-US requires, and the project was en-US discussed at length in City en-US Commission meetings. en-US Obviously, that was not en-US enough. en-US Heed my warning. If the en-US elected officials across this en-US county hope to keep their en-US jobs, they must do a better job en-US of making the public aware. A en-US legal notice in the paper or a en-US blurb on their website wont en-US do it. I know at times, it en-US appears as though the public en-US is in a deep slumber, but when en-US something like this wakes en-US them up, there will be hell to en-US pay!en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. A dream come en-US true. Every day it brings in en-US automatic excitement and en-US thrills to meet guests who visit en-US the home of Ms. Bethune from en-US around the world and share en-US the phenomenal lady she is; a en-US little piece, a little space, each en-US room at a time.en-US We are a proud member of en-US Trip Advisor and very glad to en-US say that when guests tour the en-US area, they will see the Mary en-US McLeod Bethune Foundation en-US as one of the sites to come and en-US visit, Ms. Zow-Johnson said. en-US The partnership has awarded en-US us for the second time an outen-US -en-US standing award of excellence en-US from the feedback that we en-US actually receive from the en-US guests who visit Ms. Bethunes en-US home. en-US Ms. Bethune served and en-US advised four presidents (Calen-US-en-US vin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, en-US Franklin D. We were talking en-US about it and I think Riddle is en-US known a lot for their aviation en-US and aeronautical side of en-US things, but it is refreshing to en-US see they have a motorsports en-US program and are enlightening en-US students on the motorsports en-US world and showing them how en-US much more there is to it than en-US just going fast and turn left.en-US He is hoping for a first victoen-US -en-US ry in the Monster Energy en-US NASCAR Cup Series in his en-US third full season in the series. en-US His crew chief, Alan Gusen-US -en-US tafson, is from Ormond Beach. en-US Daytona International en-US Speedway has designed a speen-US-en-US cial ticket package around Mr. en-US Elliott for the Coke Zero Sugar en-US 400. Most of the en-US houses are pretty nice, but then there are just a few that are horen-US -en-US rible. For instance, we have a new neighbor with cars parked all en-US over the street and and a truck with no tag in the driveway. en-US These people have absolutely no pride about their property. You en-US dont have to have a ton of pride, but a little pride would be nice. en-US There are people with boards still on the windows, dogs tied en-US up in the yard all day and rebel flags. Thats more rain than we had during the last hurricane. Ive en-US heard a lot of folks grumbling about streets and yards flooding, en-US and how the city wasnt doing anything to take care of it.en-US Lets think about this we live at sea level, the water table is en-US high and retention ponds are full. Where is the water supposed en-US to go? Weve had an unprecedented amount of rain when folks en-US are normally watering their lawns, gardens and washing vehien-US-en-US cles. This means that even the reclaimed water reserves arent en-US being used only filling with rainwater. en-US I do a lot of walking throughout Port Orange for exercise. Ive en-US noticed something we all can do to help keep our neighborhood en-US roads from flooding. The storm grates on most corners are filled en-US with old newspapers, branches and other debris. During the last en-US couple of thunderstorms, when the storm drains couldnt handle en-US the water, I noticed all that debris from the gutters preventing en-US the water from flowing properly. There are also areas where en-US weeds grow up in the gutters along the streets and along driveen-US -en-US way entrances. This keeps the water from flowing properly.en-US So, lets all be good citizens and do our part if there is a en-US storm grate near our homes, let's make sure its kept clear of en-US newspapers and debris. en-USButts off the beachen-USAlong with the increase in tourists during the summer season en-US at the beach comes an increase in trash, no more evident than in en-US discarded cigarette butts. en-US This is to say how detrimental this common practice is both to en-US the sand and the water. No matter how small, other means for en-US discarding such waste products would make for cleaner, more en-US attractive oceanfront premises. Keeping this in mind, smokers en-US are encouraged to thoroughly douse and then place their butts in en-US plentifully available public receptacles, as is hopefully done with en-US other garbage.en-USIn response to: Need moreen-US computer-savvy librariansen-USI am flabbergasted that you would write such a thing.en-US Older people need to live and put food on their tables. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USTen-USodays question is from a en-US gentleman who came to en-US my financial planning en-US office with his wife for a en-US consultation.en-USThey were working through en-US a touchy situation that en-US probably isnt too uncommon. en-US Phils question to me was: en-US Whats the best credit card to en-US have if you want to maintain en-US good financial accountability en-US between spouses?en-US The question alone says a en-US lot, doesnt it? Phil and his en-US wife werent immune to credit en-US card problems. One of them en-US had run up a sizable amount en-US of debt, unbeknownst to the en-US other. But, before discussing en-US credit cards, let me say the en-US problem this couple was en-US facing did not have to do with en-US the debt, but with a deeper en-US issue within the marriage. en-US I am not qualified to en-US counsel clients on marital en-US matters, but I did recommend en-US the couple spend time en-US uncovering the real issue at en-US hand, either with introspecen-US -en-US tion and open communication en-US or with the help of a profesen-US -en-US sional counselor.en-US During the appointment, I en-US helped establish a plan to start en-US paying off the debt. Now, for en-US Phils question:en-US The best solution for Phil en-US and his wife is probably not en-US another credit card with a en-US revolving line of credit. This is en-US a credit card with which you en-US can make purchases and en-US submit a partial payment on en-US the card balance at the end of en-US the month. The remainder of en-US the balance rolls over to the en-US next month with interest en-US charges. This is what got them en-US into trouble in the first place. en-US There are also credit cards en-US that require you to pay the en-US balance off, in full, at the end en-US of each month. This is a en-US possible solution, but I en-US suggested another route.en-US For Phil and his wifes en-US situation, I thought replacing en-US their credit card with a debit en-US card would be a viable option. en-US With a debit card, the money en-US at your disposal is only the en-US amount in your account. en-US When you make a purchase, en-US the purchase amount is en-US withdrawn from the bank en-US account immediately. If you en-US dont have enough funds, no en-US purchase. en-US The couple could establish a en-US joint debit card account with a en-US certain, agreed upon, balance, en-US and keep the rest of their en-US liquid assets in savings, money en-US market, etc. I encouraged en-US them to set a limit for the en-US amount in the debit account en-US (so all their eggs arent in one en-US basket) because, if a debit card en-US is lost, stolen or compromised en-US online, the thief can steal all en-US the money from the account. en-US Though banks will usually en-US reimburse the victim, it will en-US take time to rectify the en-US situation. en-US Look at different types of en-US cards if you are in a similar en-US quandary about credit card en-US debt and spousal responsibilien-US -en-US ty. And, if you are having trust en-US issues with your husband or en-US wife because of past spending, en-US act now to get to the heart of en-US the problem.en-US As I stated above, issues like en-US these are usually not about the en-US money, and the sooner you en-US resolve the real problem, the en-US sooner youll be able to move en-US forward with your finances en-US and your relationship.en-US David D. en-USA-12 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USOen-USn this trip, just taking en-US the kayak off the roof of en-US the SUV was a monuen-US -en-US mental chore.en-USThree weeks back I had en-US fallen when a ladder broke en-US and, in the process, did a job en-US on my left ankle. As I limped en-US around the truck, I wondered en-US if I could actually pull off a en-US fishing trip. en-US Once in the kayak, I was en-US pleased to find myself pretty en-US comfortable and, after a half en-US mile or so, my spirits were en-US soaring. I may be able to do en-US this after all. I was west of en-US High Bridge right at dawn en-US when a flight of five roseate en-US spoonbill wading birds passed en-US overhead. The morning sun en-US glinted off the pink birds en-US causing a smile and forcing en-US me to temporarily forget my en-US swollen ankle. en-US The tide was high and just en-US beginning to go out. My first en-US cast was more or less to shake en-US off the rust of not fishing for en-US so long, but on the retrieve, a en-US 20-pound tarpon took a swipe en-US at the jig, leaping four feet out en-US of the water. Wow! Quite a en-US sight. The silver king never en-US took the hook and that was en-US probably for the best. Trying en-US to land a fish like that in my en-US kayak would have been a en-US tough challenge. Still, that en-US kind of excitement on my first en-US cast was hard to beat. en-US For the next hour I drifted en-US without any action at all. I was en-US there for the spotted sea trout en-US I had been collecting all en-US winter and spring, but I knew en-US that now the water had en-US warmed and the fish had en-US probably scattered. Finally en-US something strong nailed my en-US chartreuse jig right on the en-US bottom and sped off for points en-US unknown. The run was so en-US strong at first, I believed it to en-US be a snook, but after a bit I en-US could tell it was a trout a en-US nice trout. en-US The fish went under the en-US boat and then behind me en-US before it came to the net. I en-US measured it to be right at 21 en-US inches. All right, I thought, en-US now Im fishing! en-US Soon after that, I allowed en-US The Peanut to drift to a stop en-US against a downed tree just off en-US a deep hole. I cast into the en-US current and the lure washed en-US back pass me so quickly I was en-US slow to take up the slack. As I en-US did, right at the boat a big en-US snook whacked the jig and en-US came half out of the water. A en-US beautiful fish of perhaps 30 en-US inches in length. I would like en-US to tell you I enjoyed a great en-US fight with that tough line-siden-US -en-US er, but in truth the fish threw en-US the hook on that first jump. en-US As I checked my line for en-US abrasions, I pondered what en-US had just happened. In my first en-US hour I had a hit from a tarpon en-US and missed a snook. Some en-US people have to travel to en-US Central America for that type en-US of action. You cant beat en-US fishing in Volusia County.en-US Drifting once more, I en-US hooked up with another nice en-US trout that escaped at the boat. en-US It took a while for another en-US hook up, but when it did en-US come, it was a fat, 19-inch sea en-US trout. Farther east near the en-US Halifax River, I landed a en-US smaller snook of about 18 en-US inches and carefully released it en-US to fight another day. That en-US would be all the action I had en-US on this day, but I left a happy en-US angler. en-US You know each week I en-US receive letters from folks en-US looking for instruction on en-US how to get started kayaking. en-US Now it occurs to me it does en-US not matter if you have a leg en-US injury or a handicap, you can en-US still kayak. Paddling only en-US stresses your upper body, so en-US my sore ankle did not come en-US into play on the water. Take it en-US from me, a leg or foot problem en-US will not preclude you from en-US kayaking. Go for it!en-US en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. I am still en-US cooking the dinner en-US whats up with that? en-USBut Im not the only father en-US cooking on Fathers Day. A lot en-US of dads like to cook on our en-US special day. Thats probably en-US why not as many families go en-US out to eat on Fathers Day. en-US More than 80 million people en-US dine out on Mothers Day. en-US Almost that many on Valenen-US -en-US tines Day, too, which seems en-US like a replay for the same en-US person. en-US Now dont get upset, I think en-US thats fine. But what about en-US Dads Day? We are always en-US playing second fiddle to mom. en-US Look at TV sports awards or en-US championship games. Players en-US are always saying, Hi Mom en-US or I love you Mom or this is en-US for you Mom. en-US Guys, we need to step up en-US our game. Maybe we should en-US show our loved ones how en-US much they mean to us by en-US cooking for them that day and en-US making it a memorable en-US experience each year. Food en-US has a way of creating a en-US memory that can last a en-US lifetime. Of course, it better be en-US good. en-US I can help you with that, en-US and here are some great en-US recipes that can do the trick. en-US Oh, by the way, as far as a gift en-US for Dad, make it simple. A call en-US from family far away or not so en-US far away is great and personal. en-US A card always touches my en-US heart with a hand written note en-US inside. Dont just buy someen-US -en-US thing to give as a gift, try to en-US share your emotions with dad. en-US He will love that. en-US Now how about a recipe for en-US baby back ribs. Come on, its en-US Fathers Day and we love en-US them.
