en-USSubstance abuse treatment en-US facility faces a hard realityen-USReality House, run by Stewart-Marchman Act, en-US will close its doors July 1, the victim of budget cuts en-US by the Florida Department of Corrections.en-US The 145-bed residential, substance abuse treaten-US -en-US ment center, opened in 1980, is at 1341 Indian Lake en-US Road in Daytona Beach.en-US The facility also provides a work release program. en-US It is the only addictions treatment program of its en-US kind in Florida offered to inmates outside the walls en-US of a prison. en-US Services include a culinary arts program with en-US eight different certifications, a GED program, indien-US-en-US vidual and group counseling, family education, recen-US -en-US reation, spiritual services, self-help groups, anger en-US management, communication skills, daily liven-US -en-US ing skills, domestic violence groups, family en-US dynamics group and drug screening. en-US Inmates must meet eligibility standards to en-US enter the program which has an 87.1 percent en-US successful completion rate, the highest of all en-US state inmate, long-term residential drug en-US treatment services. The recidivism rate for en-US inmates returning to prison after graduating from en-US Reality House is estimated to be about 4.8 percent en-US compared to 30 percent for inmates going straight en-US from prison back into society, according to Andrew en-US Williams, senior director of residential services.en-US Mr. Williams said it is more cost effective to house en-US clients in programs like Reality House than in prisen-US -en-US on.en-US The work release program has resulted in a 95 en-US peren-US -en-US cent employment en-US rate, partnering with more than 200 en-US employers in the community.en-US When they transition out, instead of giving them en-US a bus ticket and $50 and saying hey go be a producen-US -en-US tive citizen, we ensure that our clients have that safe en-USThe Volusia County en-US School Board will stay the en-US course on the multi-district en-US lawsuit against House Bill en-US 7069, involving charter en-US schools, and the cost is still en-US well within the originally set en-US budget.en-US In a 3-2 vote, with Board en-US Members Ida Wright, Carl en-US Persis and Linda Cuthbert en-US voting in the affirmative, and en-US Board Members Melody en-US Johnson and Dr. John Hill en-US voting against, the district en-US agreed, after careful discusen-US -en-US sion and consideration, to en-US remain in the suit despite it en-US losing the first court decien-US -en-US sion. en-US You know, I was opposed en-US to this last time. I feel the bigen-US-en-US gest winners in the room are en-US the attorneys, Ms. Johnson. en-US I know its not much money, en-US but its money. I feel like en-US theyre just not going to go en-US over a legislator. Maybe its en-US time to talk to the legislators en-US and create more collaboraen-US -en-US tion. Im not thrilled with en-US this.en-US However, even if the suit en-US ends up being a loss, it comes en-US down to standing up and en-US fighting for what is right, Ms. en-US Wright said. en-US It comes a point that you en-US just have to stand for princien-US -en-US ple, Ms. Wright said. Just en-US standing back forget en-US them. They dont care about en-US us, they have their own speen-US-en-US cial interest. Its time for us to en-US say We may not win this en-US fight, but we are for darned en-US sure going to give it our best en-US shot.en-USVolusia will stay en-US in charter en-US school lawsuit en-USIdol aids en-US urban en-US surfers en-US fund en-US raisingen-USUrban Surf 4 kids develen-US-en-US oped by Daytona Beach resien-US -en-US dents and foster parents Wesen-US-en-US ley and DeBora Stewart is a en-US unique outreach program en-US that works with orphans and en-US foster children. en-US To help keep the program en-US going, there will be a funden-US -en-US raiser at 6 p.m. Sunday, June en-US 3, with American Idol finalist en-US Elliot Yamin performing at en-US the Stremline Hotel, 140 en-US Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach.en-US The Stewarts began the en-US program in San Diego in en-US 2009 where it is still operaen-US -en-US tional. They moved to Daytoen-US -en-US na Beach to establish an East en-US Coast presence more than en-US two years ago.en-US We were really inspired by en-US looking at the Bible in James, en-US chapter one, where it talks en-US about looking out for en-US orphans, Mr. Stewart said. en-US From there, just taking our en-US passion for the ocean, we en-US have evolved over the years.en-US The program provides chilen-US-en-US dren in need, primarily foster en-US youth, the opportunity to en-US participate in water-based en-US activities, primarily surfing, en-US he said. Our hope and goals en-US are to reach kids who would en-USElliot Yamin en-USSTAR shelter may en-US become safe haven en-US for veteransen-USAs Halifax Urban Ministry en-US STAR family shelter residents en-US are relocating to the newly en-US opened Hope Place, equally en-US new Executive Director Buck en-US James has plans to reinvent en-US the STAR shelter to assist en-US homeless veterans. en-US Although nothing is set in en-US stone, the future primary en-US focus for the STAR shelter on en-US North Street in Daytona en-US Beach is to serve veterans. en-US Mr. James said We are in en-US the process of refurbishing en-US the STAR shelter with the en-US intention we are going to en-US serve the veteran population. en-US We have a grant application en-US that is pending with the Veten-US -en-US erans Administration that we en-US feel very optimistic about, en-US but wont know the final en-US answer until July.en-US The Volusia County Veteren-US -en-US ans Court also is interested in en-US partnering with HUM to en-US have an alternative to jail for en-US a veteran who gets arrested en-US for vagrancy, he said. Right en-US now, the only option might en-US be jail. So, we are working en-US with them to see how we can en-US assist with that population, to en-US not only provide them a safe en-US place to live, which is half the en-US problem, but also to be able en-US to provide those wraparound en-US services to help them move en-US towards self-sufficiency.en-US South Daytona resident en-US Jim Goodwin and his wife, en-US Jackie, recently toured Hope en-US Place and heard about the en-US plans for the STAR shelter. en-US I am a volunteer at Emory en-US L. Bennett Veterans Nursing en-US Home and I think it is maren-US -en-US velous, Mr. Goodwin said. en-US They havent had enough en-US places to stay whether men en-US were veterans or not. There en-US has never been a place in the en-US county for (homeless veteren-US -en-US ans) specifically. This is great. en-US From what Buck said it is en-US going to be for both men and en-US women, so that is even better. en-US The STAR center has been en-US wonderful and it will continen-US -en-US ue to be. en-USDerby dayen-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USAlyssa Hodge, 11, pushes her teammate, Jasmine Rivas, 10, in the Rainen-US-en-US bow Unicorn car during the annual Fifth Grade Derby at Pathways Elemenen-US-en-US tary School in Ormond Beach on Thursday, May 24. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USlanding, they have a job, he en-US said. I had one client leave out en-US of my program who had en-US $10,000 in his account. So, he en-US has $10,000, a place to stay, en-US vocational training, obtained en-US his GED while he is in our en-US program. This guy is less likely en-US to come back into the system.en-US Helping clients gain a career en-US when they get out is crucial, en-US Mr. Williams said. When they en-US transition out, they are not en-US breaking into my house, they en-US are not breaking into your en-US house. They are transitioning en-US out with hope.en-US But the state government is en-US turning its back on a program en-US that works, he said. Our clien-US -en-US ents are going to have to go en-US back to prison.en-US This is affecting the treaten-US-en-US ment process as it relates to en-US helping them be productive en-US citizens, Mr. Williams said. en-US You cant call that smart jusen-US -en-US tice.en-US The state funding cut just en-US doesnt make sense, he said. en-US Do you want him (inmate) en-US coming out the same way he en-US came in? No, you dont. It is en-US disheartening to see the en-US Department of Corrections en-US make this decision letting go en-US of our programs. We are in the en-US midst of an opioid crisis. You en-US are going to take away the beds en-US in regard to who is treating en-US these clients to ensure they en-US dont go out and get on this en-US substance?en-US Mr. Williams estimated 30 en-US to 40 percent of inmates have en-US substance abuse problems. en-US Ryan Stanley, director of en-US construction operations at en-US BrandStar Studios in South en-US Florida, which produces teleen-US-en-US vision shows like Military en-US Makeover, is a former resident en-US of Reality House.en-US Mr. Stanley developed a en-US full-blown addiction to oxycoen-US-en-US done pain pills after a car accien-US -en-US dent, he said. I was buying the en-US drugs illegally. Ultimately I en-US ended up serving a seven-year en-US prison sentence for armed en-US robbery. I was also trying to en-US get the police to kill me en-US because I was suicidal.en-US He was in prison for five en-US years and was then transferred en-US to Reality House, he said. For en-US me personally, Reality House en-US saved my life.en-US Mr. Stanley isnt happy with en-US the DOC decision.en-US It is one of the stupidest en-US decisions the Department of en-US Corrections has ever made, he en-US said. It is probably one of the en-US most illogical things they can en-US do when it comes to rehabilien-US -en-US tating the men. The only hope en-US that these (incarcerated) men en-US have are programs like Reality en-US House. It is really their last en-US chance.en-US The building will still be en-US used for work release proen-US-en-US grams. en-US But, Rhonda Harvey, SMA en-US chief of operations, said, en-US Without the specialized treaten-US -en-US ment provided by our Reality en-US House program, individuals en-US whom have been working en-US towards rehabilitation will go en-US back to prison. Reality House en-US has equipped thousands of en-US individuals with the tools they en-US need to be a productive memen-US-en-US ber of our community conen-US -en-US necting them back to their en-US families, and allotting them en-US another chance at life. To cut en-US these programs is a detriment en-US to us all. en-US Volusia Countys addition to en-US the suit makes 10 school disen-US -en-US tricts in the appeal process. en-US Originally, 13 Florida school en-US districts joined in the fight, en-US with districts costs based on en-US district size and enrollment en-US numbers, said Michael Dyer, en-US district general council.en-US The board originally set a en-US $25,000 limit on the initial en-US suit, requirinen-US g a vote for addien-US -en-US tional funds. However, at the en-US current time, the district is still en-US under that original budget, en-US Mr. Dyer said.en-US We are still well within that en-US amount, en-US he said, addressing en-USsome board members initial en-US reservations regarding costs. I en-US think we have a good faith en-US basis for an appeal, but obvien-US-en-US ously it doesnt come without a en-US cost. en-US No attorney can guarantee en-US a result, Mr. Dyer said. It en-US doesnt mean that if we preen-US-en-US sented an appeal that the First en-US District Court would (agree) en-US but they may.en-US Among those areas the disen-US -en-US tricts believes en-US are unconstituen-US-en-US tional are the controversial en-US Schools of Hope provision, en-US which essentially bypasses en-US local school boards abilities to en-US approve or deny a charter en-US school application from a desen-US -en-US ignated School of Hope in an en-US underserved area; charter en-US school agreements and applien-US-en-US cation processes being stanen-US -en-US dardized and mandated by the en-US state; and the highly contested en-US segment on diverting local ad en-US valorem taxes, levied in the en-US form of discretionary capital en-US outlay funds.en-US The local ad valorem funds en-US are collected for specific en-US school district purposes, and en-US now a portion of these funds en-US must be handeen-US d over to charen-US -en-US ter schools, rather than used en-US for the projects the schools en-US have discussed, voted and en-US approved, Mr. Dyer said. en-US Despite these and other en-US areas of challenge, Second Ciren-US -en-US cuit Court Judge John C. Cooen-US -en-US per ruled in favor of the state, en-US and the district was notified en-US April 17, which started the en-US 30-day countdown to request en-US an appeal.en-US In this instance, its a low en-US hurdle, its what they call a no en-US vote review, meaning that if en-US the lower court has looked at en-US the issue and its really just one en-US of law and theyve made an en-US interpretation, then the appelen-US -en-US late court can look at it en-US fresh, said Ted Doran, a en-US school board attorney. These en-US are very, very, very fundamenen-US-en-US tal to our society questions en-US ten-US hat need to be answered, en-US however they are answered. Its en-US not beyond the possibility en-US that this is the kind of thing en-US the Supreme Court gets en-US involved in.en-US There are questions being en-US raised about checks and balen-US-en-US ances, and how we interpret en-US and apply our constitution, en-US Mr. Doran said.en-US With strength in numbers, en-US based on student numbers and en-US larger district like Pinellas and en-US Broward (countieen-USs), the cost en-US for the district will end up en-US being far less than originally en-US thought, with a clear cut case en-US of going againen-US st the constituen-US -en-US tion, Ms. Cuthbert said.en-US The law is the law, she en-US said. I think the state Legislaen-US-en-US ture is setting en-USus up to be too en-US competitive. Its not fair, and en-US its not right for all schools en-US who accept public money. L en-USately I have been receiving en-US communications from en-US some of the good folks en-US down Oak Hill way. en-USThese notes all go to a single en-US point whats going on with en-US Shiloh Marsh? Perhaps you en-US have heard the famous en-US inventor, financier and en-US engineer Elon Musk is en-US planning to build a private en-US space port that would en-US compete with the Cape. One en-US of the places he is considering en-US is Shiloh Marsh. en-US Concerned citizens are en-US talking about local politicians en-US selling out to Musks company en-US SpaceX. First, let me tell you en-US where the Marsh is located. en-US Driving south out of Oak Hill, en-US you make a left off U.S. 1 to en-US head east on the Kennedy en-US Parkway. That road serves as a en-US sort of back door to Kennedy en-US Space Center. Each morning en-US and evening it gets pretty busy en-US as the workers for KSC en-US commute back and forth.en-US Bordering that stretch of en-US blacktop on the southwest side en-US is a large piece of unimproved en-US land that was once home to a en-US large citrus farm. It runs from en-US just east of U. S. 1 down to en-US Haulover Canal. The Marsh is en-US the kind of place where en-US four-wheelers like to play and en-US doubles as a pretty good en-US lovers lane. en-US For me, it is a great place to en-US launch my kayak to fish the en-US waters that were once the en-US northern end of the Indian en-US River. Fishing there is always en-US good and the area is quite en-US beautiful. There you will find en-US a large stand of stunted, flat en-US top trees growing in the water. en-US The locals know them as the en-US table tops. en-US Mr. Musk tells us he intends en-US to build a busy space port en-US there. In the works is a en-US manned mission to Mars by en-US 2024 and by 2040 he expects en-US to have thousands of people en-US living on the red planet. en-US We might dismiss that en-US far-fetched plan were it not en-US Elon Musk. He is a very en-US special man with a staggering en-US list of successes. At age 46, he en-US is the 53rd wealthiest person en-US on earth. We have to take this en-US guy seriously. en-US The question is what effect en-US will all of these rocket en-US launches have on the Marsh, en-US nearby Mosquito Lagoon and en-US the community of Oak Hill?en-US To be sure, the space port en-US and surrounding area will en-US have to be restricted due to en-US the sensitive nature of some of en-US the payloads. At Kennedy, that en-US removed hundreds of square en-US miles from public use. With en-US development taking such a toll en-US on Floridas environment, that en-US could be a good thing. Of en-US course, once the public use is en-US cut off, it will be permanent. en-US Oak Hill people who have en-US contacted me are concerned of en-US the dangers involved with en-US living in such proximity to so en-US many rocket launches. That is en-US bound to be a legitimate en-US concern as is the added traffic en-US in Southern Volusia and en-US Northern Brevard Counties.en-US My main concern is that all en-US that land (and surrounding en-US water) will be turned over to en-US Mr. Musk without restriction. en-US The mans imagination en-US obviously knows no bounds as en-US does his resources. What will en-US he want to do there in the en-US future? Will his projects create en-US a type of pollution yet en-US unknown? No one can say en-US (Elon Musk included.) en-US To be fair, right now Shiloh en-US Marsh is a thrown-away place en-US unimproved and en-US underused. The fact that it sits en-US in the center of some of the en-US most sensitive and pristine en-US waters in the state should en-US worry everyone. Before the en-US politicians give away the farm, en-US intensive studies should be en-US done on both the area and en-US SpaceX. This project could en-US put Oak Hill on the map, but en-US maybe thats not such a good en-US thing.en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. Over the years en-US we have evolved to where we en-US are providing opportunities en-US for kids to en-US earnen-US a surf and en-US serve experience; a few simple en-US goals and then they get a en-US chance to go on a trip. en-US Some Daytona Beach youth en-US were taken to Puerto Rico in en-US March, for example. en-US Most times foster youth are en-US prohibited from going to the en-US water or going in the ocean, en-US Mr. Stewart said. In my opinen-US -en-US ion, there is nothing greater en-US you can offer a foster kid but en-US really anyone as far as ten-US herapy. en-US It is highly therapeutic, and it en-US really allows these kids to be a en-US kid for a little while. The water en-US breaks down barriers and they en-US get a chance to really open up en-US and share things about their en-US life that a lot of times they en-US wont share with anyone else.en-US Mr. Stewart stressed the en-US program is about hope and en-US giving the children something en-US to look forward to. The five-en-US year plan for the nonprofit is en-US to bring foster children from en-US all 50 states on trips to either en-US San Diego or Daytona Beach en-US to experience the ocean for the en-US first time. Foster children from en-US Buffalo, N.Y., will be VIP en-US guests at the concert June 3. en-US Daytona Beach can be this en-US mecca, this center, to where en-US kids can come and experience en-US the ocean, Mr. Stewart said. en-US It is going to be a fun night en-US where people can hear some en-US great music and learn more en-US about what we are doing.en-US Ms. Stewart said they wanten-US -en-US ed to give children a type of en-US water therapy that could totalen-US-en-US ly change their life. They en-US (also) have to understand the en-US need and necessity to give en-US back, and learn it is very en-US important to give back to your en-US community, she said.en-US Besides reaching out to en-US other states, Ms. Stewart said en-US they have been involved with en-US foster homes in Daytona and en-US other Florida cities.en-US They have a daughter who en-US surfs, she said, and thought en-US how could kids without paren-US -en-US ents or kids without a mom or en-US a dad enjoy something like en-US this? It is impractical to send part of a crew out to do its thing, en-US go somewhere else, then come back again for the next segment en-US requiring their attention. en-US Certainly in my experience, there were the shovel-leaners who en-US werent pulling their weight, but peer pressure can do amazing en-US things. And on more than one occasion, I had the distinctly en-US unpleasant chore of documenting poor performance and recen-US -en-US ommending the employee for dismissal. Yes, it does happen in en-US government jobs.en-US This practice of seemingly over-manning is certainly not limen-US -en-US ited to taxpayer-supported workers. I cant tell you the times I en-US have seen commercial outfits using what seems to be more en-US workers than needed. If you have any doubts, check out a major en-US construction or paving job. Some down time is necessary.en-US For the readers information, government agencies routinely en-US contract out jobs to profit-driven private companies, which en-US accounts for some of that half-cent tax that the reader finds so en-US objectionable.en-US And that machine that holds up the shovel? Dont laugh. Techen-US-en-US nology is eliminating the need for human effort, from manufacen-US -en-US turing to brain surgery, and will continue to do so. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USI en-UShad an inground pool en-US installed in my backyard last en-US summer. en-USWe also added a heater so en-US we can swim most of the year. en-US Since I really dont understand en-US pool chemistry (and have no en-US desire to learn it), I was quite en-US happy to hire a pool company en-US to keep my investment in en-US good shape. If a problem en-US arises, they fix it. I like that.en-US So, aside from the weekly en-US badgering required to get my en-US teenage son to brush the tile en-US and scoop out the leaves, the en-US pool takes up very little of my en-US time. I already have enough en-US responsibilities. I just want to en-US enjoy it.en-US The deluge of rain weve had en-US in the last three weeks has en-US thrown my pool chemicals off en-US balance. The heater is also en-US running more frequently to en-US warm the cold rain water, and en-US Ive had to drain the pool en-US several times to keep it from en-US overflowing. Dont get me en-US wrong, Im not complaining en-US about the rain; my yard has en-US never looked greener. But, en-US heres my point all the rain en-US would have been a much en-US bigger problem if I hadnt en-US been prepared ahead of time en-US with a pool service company, en-US heater and drainage system. en-US As you have probably en-US already figured out, I am a en-US setting up an analogy. Just like en-US my backyard pool, we need to en-US be prepared for too much en-US rainfall or even potential en-US flooding in our investment en-US portfolios. When there is a lot en-US of economic rain, the stock en-US market doesnt grow evenly. en-US Some areas grow fast, while en-US others shrink. Technology, en-US demographics, government en-US policies, taxes, inflation en-US there is a long list of things en-US that can potentially affect a en-US portfolio. en-US Because higher-than-averen-US -en-US age rainfall amounts can en-US throw a portfolios chemicals en-US off balance, it needs to be en-US checked and adjusted on a en-US regular basis, preferably by en-US someone who understands the en-US science of keeping a portfolio en-US healthy. Sometimes, a portfoen-US -en-US lio will even need to be en-US drained so the extra water en-US can be funneled somewhere en-US else.en-US As I have guided investors en-US over the last 25 years, Ive en-US noted an interesting, and en-US sometimes counterproductive, en-US tendency . when the stock en-US market is going up, investors en-US say, Yay! Dont touch anyen-US -en-US thing; it is working! Then, en-US when the stock market is en-US falling, they change their tunes en-US to, Whats happening?! en-US Hurry, do somethien-US ng! en-US Whats ironic is the job of a en-US professional investment en-US manager/adviser is essentially en-US the same, whether the market en-US is up 10 percent or down 10 en-US percent. Rain or shine, a en-US portfolio needs to be kept in en-US balance and diversified. If you en-US have the time, like the process, en-US and know how to do this job, en-US thats great; you can balance en-US and maintain your portfolio en-US yourself.en-US Alternatively, if you are en-US lacking in the time, interest or en-US skill, then consider hiring an en-US adviser to maintain your en-US investments. Let them do the en-US worrying for you, while you en-US enjoy the benefits of your en-US investments and focus on en-US other things important to you.en-US David D. en-USA-12 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USMen-USost folks who seek en-US out the wily flounder en-US set out at night in a en-US small boat with a bright light. en-US The idea is to scour the en-US shoreline for those telltale en-US reflective eyes that shine up en-US from the bottom. In order to en-US have success gigging flounder, en-US you must be able to traverse en-US very shallow water and that en-US usually means a motor wont en-US work. It is best done with a en-US push pole, paddle or a set of en-US oars. en-US In the dark of night, the en-US flatfish move in to hide on the en-US bottom and feed along the en-US shoreline. To begin with en-US flounder are almost perfectly en-US camouflaged, but to make en-US matters worse, they are able to en-US adjust their color to the en-US surroundings. en-US To get them you must have en-US a stout gig that more resemen-US -en-US bles a farmers pitchfork. en-US Those tiny wire gigs you may en-US have seen are better suited for en-US frogs. If you stab a five-pound en-US flounder with that flimsy en-US thing, you will pull back a en-US broken gig. Nope it takes a en-US heavy gig and a good light to en-US fire fish (as the old Floridians en-US called it.) en-US If you time it right in a good en-US spot, the reward can be great. en-US I have seen commercial en-US fishermen catch over 50 in a en-US night like that. While that is en-US productive, to me it is just en-US meat fishing. en-US I prefer to wade for flounen-US -en-US der and catch them on en-US artificial baits. Now that is a en-US fun and challenging thing to en-US do. Each year, by mid-May en-US when the water has warmed en-US suitably, I am out soaking my en-US flip flop shod feet in the en-US Halifax and its tributaries in en-US search of those tasty flatties. en-US In the past 10 years I have en-US had periods of fabulous en-US success and times of near en-US nothingness. Such is the plight en-US of a flounder fisherman. Most en-US of the time I cast jigs to them en-US and back that up with the en-US occasional purple bass worm. en-US Despite their reputation as a en-US bottom hugger, flounder are en-US aggressive feeders and will hit en-US most any artificial lure. I en-US know folks who only use en-US spoons for them and, at times, en-US I have had great success en-US fishing for them with top en-US water lures. en-US You may wonder how a fish en-US that covers itself up with mud en-US to ambush its prey can be en-US coaxed to bite on the top? en-US Well, remember most of the en-US time they are caught in less en-US than two feet of water and its en-US not a great leap for them to en-US capture food on the surface. en-US Actually I have watched flounen-US-en-US ders jump out of the water en-US when feeding in depths of five en-US feet or more. Much more en-US active than many believe. en-US If you dont think they are en-US game fish, the next time you en-US catch one, take a few seconds en-US to inspect that large mouth. en-US Not many fish are possessed en-US of such a killing tool. Big en-US canine teeth set in a chasm of en-US a mouth that would make a en-US freshwater bass proud. That en-US big mouth is similar to that of en-US a snook, speckled perch or en-US musky. en-US Not only is the mouth of a en-US flounder formidable, it is also en-US very hard. As I have reported en-US for years, about half of the en-US flounders I hook wind up en-US coming off. I cannot say that en-US about any other species. Very en-US difficult to get a hook into en-US those lips. en-US They also are smart en-US creatures. If one bites, it will en-US be a long while before you will en-US have another chance. If a sea en-US trout, red drum or snook hits en-US at your lure, en-US you can usually en-US throw it right back for round en-US two. In order to get a second en-US hit from a flounder, you must en-US wait over a half hour with a en-US full hour even better. en-US With all those problems, en-US you might think it is not a en-US good fish to target. That is not en-US the case. Wading for flounder en-US is one of my all-time favorite en-US things to do. This season is en-US only just beginning, but stick en-US with me and Ill let you know en-US if it turns out to be a good en-US one.en-US en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-USmore than 40 years. We are very en-US excited about this years lineup and our en-US concert schedule expansion through en-US Sept. 28. en-US Jaded began one day in early February en-US 2015 in Ft. Pete en-US enlisted John Aubrey, a former guitarist en-US from the Wonderbread Band and The en-US Adequates to be the bands Joe Perry. A en-US close friend recommended Tom Gress, en-US who took on the part of Joey Kramer on en-US drums, and he brought along a former en-US student Chad Mason to play Tom Hamen-US-en-US ilton on bass. en-US With the line-up set, the band quickly en-US devised a set list that encompassed en-US enough of the 45-year history of Aeroen-US -en-US smith to be representative of the actual en-US experience of seeing the band live. en-US The Stage at Thank You en-US Five will perform A Dolls en-US House, Part 2 at 7:30 p.m. en-US June 8-9, 15-16 and 2 p.m. en-US June 17, at 4606 S. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill B-3en-USDen-US-Day, June 6, was a very en-US special moment in en-US history when 160,000 en-US troops landed on the beaches of en-US Normandy, creating the turning en-US point for the allies in WWII. en-USTo accomplish this great en-US victory, the allies needed a en-US special food that had to be en-US light-weight, nutritious and en-US have the ability to generate en-US lots of energy to keep the en-US troops ready to fight. The en-US Hershey Chocolate Co. was en-US approached in 1937 to create en-US what was later called the D en-US ration bar. It had to be high in en-US energy, withstand high heat, en-US and weigh 4 ounces.en-US What they created isnt the en-US Hershey bar we know today, en-US which is wonderful. The bar en-US created for the troops was a en-US blend of chocolate, sugar, en-US cocoa butter, skim milk en-US powder and oat flour. The en-US mixture was so thick, it had to en-US be hand molded at first. The en-US bar was like a chocolate brick en-US that had to be shaved with a en-US knife to be eaten. The worst en-US part was the taste, which was en-US extremely bitter because of the en-US chocolate and oat flour recipe. en-US Later, during the war, a en-US tropical blend was created for en-US the Pacific Campaign. en-US Fortunately because sugar was en-US used to give quick energy to en-US the troops, caramels, orange en-US and lemon-flavored powdered en-US drinks with lots of sugar were en-US included in the troops rations. en-US Hershey produced more than en-US 3 billion bars for the war en-US effort. en-US I am sure after the war, en-US veterans couldnt wait to eat en-US Hershey chocolate kisses en-US again. Its amazing how en-US something that tasted so bad en-US helped win the war. en-US Chocolate is the number en-US one dessert in the world with a en-US history that dates back to the en-US ancient Aztec and Mayan en-US civilizations. en-US It seems the first time en-US chocolate was used in war was en-US by Hernando Cortez when he en-US conquered Mexico. The en-US Mayans would make a en-US chocolate drink from ground en-US cacao beans (cocoa beans), en-US chile peppers and water en-US whipped until frothy. Cortez is en-US reported to have required all en-US of his troops to drink the en-US chocolate mixture daily as an en-US energy booster. en-US During the Revolutionary en-US war, medics would give the en-US drink to wounded soldiers to en-US help with their recovery. en-US Thomas Jefferson was so en-US impressed with the chocolate en-US drink he predicted it would en-US replace tea and coffee in en-US America. In the early 20th en-US century, members of expedien-US -en-US tions to the North and South en-US Poles drank hot chocolate to en-US provide warmth, nutrients, en-US and energy boosts.en-US OK, so it gives you energy en-US and nutrients, but thats not en-US why we eat it today. We eat it en-US because it taste soooo good. en-US Place a piece of milk chocolate en-US in your mouth and feel it start en-US to melt and you get that burst en-US of sweet and bitter creaminess. en-US WOW! Now we know it en-US makes a great dessert, too. en-US If it wasnt for the Italians, en-US who started adding sugar to en-US chocolate, we might be still en-US drinking a bitter drink. But en-US did you know chocolate is en-US used to make some savory en-US dishes taste great as well? Try en-US my chocolate sauce. You might en-US be surprised! Its good on en-US steaks, chicken or pork.en-USCostas Chocolate en-US Sauceen-USIngredients en-US 1 tablespoon unsalted butteren-US 2 gloves garlic, minced en-US smallen-US cup chicken or beef stocken-US cup heavy cream or half en-US & halfen-US 2-3 ounces semi-sweet en-US chocolate, chopped en-US Your choice, a splash of en-US bourbon, whiskey or vodkaen-US 1 tablespoon hot sauce, en-US more if you like it hotteren-US Salt and pepper to tasteen-US Directionsen-US In a sauce pan, saut garlic en-US in butter over medium heat en-US for 1-2 minutes; dont burn. en-US Add stock and continue en-US cooking for 1 minute.
