en-USProgress continues en-US throughout Daytona Beachen-USWhether it was approving extensions to the en-US Sweetheart Trail, approving rezoning so a Wawa can en-US proceed at Holly Hill Shopping Plaza or granting the en-US go ahead for Streamline Hotel owner Eddie Henen-US -en-US nessy to redevelop land, it was full speed ahead for en-US the Daytona Beach City Commission May 16.en-US City commissioners agreed Mr. Hennessy could en-US buy a small parcel of city property for $1,000 that is en-US attached to property he already owns. He owns land en-US on both sides of Coates Street, with a 380-foot secen-US -en-US tion of the road expected to be permanently closed en-US in commission action June 6.en-US Jim Cameron, senior vice president of governen-US-en-US ment relations for the Daytona Regional Chamber en-US of Commerce said, If it can help redevelopen-US -en-US ment efforts we would like to see this meaen-US -en-US sure go through. Count on us for support. en-US Mr. Hennessy said, before the vote, Hopeen-US -en-US fully they will let me buy it. That is the ultien-US -en-US mate goal. I own the surrounding properen-US -en-US ties. It only makes sense for me to own it. I en-US dont want that little piece of property to en-US hinder me from developing something beautiful en-US and grand in the City of Daytona Beach.en-US He plans to tear down existing structures on the en-US property he owns, including the old Shells restauen-US -en-US rant building and the pink building on the corner of en-US Coates and East Internatiopnal Speedway Bouleen-US -en-US vard, he said. There is a lot going on. It is a process en-US of things to go through, a lot of codes to comply en-US with.en-US Parking for the en-US property is still to be determined.en-US The commission also unanimously agreed to a en-US request to rezone 1.9 acres of land on the northwest en-US corner of Mason Avenue and Nova Road within the en-US Holly Hill Shopping Plaza to allow for the developen-US -en-US ment of a Wawa. Parking will be redeveloped as the en-USThere wont be sign spinen-US -en-US ners, but there will be a en-US drive-through Starbucks in en-US Ormond Beach.en-US Those were two topics en-US addressed at the Ormond en-US Beach commission meeting en-US May 15.en-US Actually human sign spinen-US -en-US ners already are not allowed en-US within city limits. However, en-US the commission unanimousen-US -en-US ly approved taking the lanen-US -en-US guage from the land developen-US-en-US ment code and putting it into en-US the code of ordinances along en-US with neighborhood improveen-US-en-US ments.en-US There were amendments en-US to a temporary sign code that en-US forced those to the code of en-US ordinances. Mayor Bill Paren-US -en-US tington stated there had been en-US multiple meetings on the en-US issue. en-US People holding swing en-US signs are not allowed in the en-US current code, Planning en-US Director Steven Spraker said. en-US So, same regulations, differen-US -en-US ent section of our rules and en-US regulations. Still not allowed. en-US It has been a number of years en-US it hasnt been allowed. en-US He added language for en-US banners over the right-of-en-US way were regulated in land en-US development code and would en-US now be regulated as a city en-US ordinance. en-US Commissioners unanien-US-en-US mously approved The Granaen-US -en-US da Plaza Groups request for en-US an amended planned develen-US -en-US opment order for 125 E. en-US Granada Blvd. within the en-US Downtown Overlay District. en-US A 7,200-square-foot vacant en-US retail building on the west en-US end of the Granada Plaza en-USCommission says en-US no to sign spinners,en-US yes to Starbucks en-USBrownie en-US marks en-US hisen-US territory en-US downtown en-USBrowniethe Town Dog, en-US Floridas most historic dog, en-US was a stray that lived in en-US downtown Daytona Beach en-US from 1939 until his death in en-US 1954. en-US A new statue and memorien-US -en-US al for Brownie will be foren-US -en-US mally unveiled at a riben-US -en-US bon-cutting ceremony at 6 en-US p.m. Thursday, May 30, at en-US Brownies grave in Riverfront en-US Park in downtown Daytona en-US Beach.en-US Fans of Brownie will gathen-US -en-US er to celebrate the dog and to en-US enjoy a cake with his picture en-US on it. There will be treats for en-US dogs in attendance along en-US with a doggie parade from en-US City Hall to Brownies grave. en-US The City of Daytona Beach en-US will re-proclaim Brownie as en-US the official Town Dog of en-US Daytona Beach. He lived in en-US a custom dog house, had a en-US bank account at the Florida en-US Bank & Trust, and dined on en-US steak and ice cream. He had en-US no owner, but was loved by en-US the entire city. Brownie was en-US featured in local and national en-US publications and became one en-US of the most written about en-US dogs in U.S. history.en-US The memorial is a project en-US of the City of Daytona Beach en-US and includes a statue of en-US Brownie; two refurbished en-US benches from Brownies lifeen-US-en-US time, dedicated to people en-US who played major roles in en-US Brownies life; a historical en-US marker, part of the Sweeten-US -en-US heart Trail, which tells en-US Brownies story; and new en-US landscaping around the hisen-US -en-US toric grave. en-US We have an appreciation en-US for animals, which I think en-US our City Commission historen-US -en-US ically has done a reasonably en-US good job of, Mayor Derrick en-US Henry said. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USfootprint for the Wawa site is en-US larger than the (closed) gas en-US station there now. en-US Travis Anderson, who owns en-US the Sunoco convenience store en-US across the street, spoke out en-US against the project, saying, en-US Mom and Pop shops cannot en-US compete with the prices. Coren-US -en-US porate stores are saturating the en-US area, making it impossible for en-US local businesses to run. Coren-US -en-US porate convenience stores do en-US not care about the community, en-US they just want to profit from en-US the area. There has to be some en-US room left for locally owned en-US businesses to support their en-US families and prosper in this en-US community.en-US Under the consent agenda, en-US the commission accepted an en-US agreement with the Florida en-US Department of Transportation en-US for reimbursement to the city en-US of up to $450,000 for continuen-US -en-US ing construction of the 12-foot en-US wide multi-useSweetheart en-US Trail alongSouth Beach Street en-US between Marina Point Drive en-US and Orange Avenue; en-US andaccepted all future mainen-US -en-US tenance and costs.en-US Another agreement with en-US FDOT provided up to en-US $100,000 for extension of the en-US trail along Sickler Drive from en-US 350 feet south of Second Street en-US to Second Street.en-US Another plan outlined for en-US the commission is that over a en-US 75-week period, Florida Power en-US & Light will convert 6,500 en-US high-pressure sodium street en-US lights to LED lights, saving 56 en-US percent on kilowatt usage and en-US an estimated $57,000 savings en-US in the first year of operation. en-US shopping center will be demolen-US -en-US ished. A 2,509-square-foot en-US Starbucks with a drive-en-US through will be built.en-US The plan will increase landen-US-en-US scaping and improve the parken-US -en-US ing lot configuration, Mr. en-US Spraker said. They have a secen-US-en-US ond reading at city commisen-US-en-US sion, then they will go through en-US the site plan review committee en-US and then they will go to conen-US -en-US struction. It en-US should be an amazing water en-US slide experience for our en-US guests.en-US The Lagoon also has added en-US four arcade games to the en-US mega-arcade as well as renoen-US-en-US vated the 18-hole, mini-golf en-US course. en-US We are also working on en-US updating our birthday party en-US rooms and putting in a bar en-US area inside the Family Enteren-US -en-US tainment Center, Mr. Currie en-US said.en-US After the hurricane, the first en-US priority was to get the Family en-US Entertainment Center (the dry en-US part of the complex) cleaned en-US up and open to visitors, which en-US they did by the next Saturday.en-US Since we were fortunate en-US enough to have power, we en-US were able to open up our facilen-US -en-US ities for people to come in and en-US charge their phones and also en-US provide some fun for everyone en-US who had been cooped up, Mr. en-US Currie said. On the water en-US park side, safety is our number en-US one priority. After all of the en-US rides were inspected and en-US cleared, we opened the water en-US park the very next weekend, of en-US course minus the mat racer. en-US We would never have made it en-US back open so quickly without en-US all the hard work of our staff. en-US As the summer season en-US begins, Wednesday night famen-US-en-US ily nights in the water park will en-US return, and Daytona Lagoon en-US will debut dive-in movies at en-US the wave pool every other en-US Sunday night, starting Memoen-US -en-US rial Day weekend.en-US The entertainment complex en-US was built in 1998 and named en-US Adventure Landing. In 2005, it en-US was sold and rebranded as en-US Daytona Lagoon. At the end of en-US 2015,United Parks bought the en-US park and continued using the en-US Daytona Lagoon brand.en-US It features year-round enteren-US -en-US tainment for guests of all ages, en-US including a state-of-the-art en-US arcade, go-karts, an 18-hole en-US mini golf course, ropes course, en-US laser tag, rock wall and island en-US hopper. en-US The water park starts its seaen-US -en-US son in March and runs until en-US mid-October. The water park en-US includes a wave pool, lazy en-US river, multi-level childrens en-US area, two high-speed body en-US slides, three tube slides, a raft en-US ride and a mat racer. Amenien-US -en-US ties include cabanas, a full bar en-US and food.en-US Mr. Currie, who has been in en-US the amusement park industry en-US since 1995, took over Daytona en-US Lagoon last year. en-US We are the perfect spot for en-US corporate parties, special en-US events and, of course, birthday en-US parties. Quite simply, we are en-US constantly seeking new ways en-US to provide that great family en-US experience, he said. Its a en-US great park just steps away from en-US the Worlds Most Famous en-US Beach, and the potential for en-US growth opportunity in this en-US area is amazing.en-US For more information, visit en-US daytonalagoon.com. After en-US talking to Commissioner en-US White, Betty Goodman, public en-US works staff and others, he said en-US the idea blossomed into a staten-US -en-US ue and memorial, and the en-US upcoming ceremony. en-US I dont know if Brownie en-US was ever proclaimed as the en-US official town dog but he was en-US always known as that, Mr. en-US James said. en-US In making his case for the en-US statue, he said, other cities en-US memorialized dogs around the en-US country and that the feelings en-US in other cities was it was more en-US than just putting a statue in a en-US park but rather looking at a en-US unique part of history and en-US how a group of people cared en-US for a stray dog. en-US Mr. James had a couple of en-US reasons for wanting the en-US memorial.en-US I thought Brownie en-US deserved having more than en-US just a grave that was there, and en-US I also did it because of our en-US friend Brenda Gibson, who en-US died last year, he said.en-US Ms. Gibson took care of en-US Brownies grave. en-US The Brownie Memorial is en-US the only dog memorial in the en-US world that is on the site of the en-US historic dogs grave and is en-US located in the place where the en-US historic dog lived, Mr. James en-US said. Most historic dogs, we en-US have no idea where they were en-US buried, and their memorials en-US are put in areas where people en-US gather and not where the dog en-US lived.en-US The names of seven people en-US will be highlighted on the en-US benches. The en-US question leads me to describe en-US the type of education I believe en-US allows a child to fully develop.en-US The philosophies and methen-US-en-US odologies used in traditional en-US education are man-made en-US guidelines that dictate what en-US and when children should be en-US taught without any regard for en-US the strengths and weaknesses en-US of the individual. Material is en-US presented to the whole class en-US on a fixed schedule, giving stuen-US-en-US dents little time to absorb and en-US process the information.en-US This type of cookie cutter en-US format can often set children en-US up for failure. Are they truly en-US learning or simply memorizen-US -en-US ing facts for temporary en-US advancement?en-US The Montessori method en-US engages the child during their en-US sensitive period of developen-US -en-US ment. The apparatus in the en-US classroom foster hands-on en-US learning through concrete en-US experience before the child is en-US presented with concepts in the en-US abstract. The Montessori en-US classroom has mixed age en-US grouping that creates many en-US opportunities for children on en-US an emotional, social and acaen-US -en-US demic level. When children en-US are given the time to observe, en-US converse and understand, a en-US lasting love of learning is en-US instilled.en-US So where do parents go en-US from here? In my opinion, an en-US alternative choice of a hybrid en-US program blending the two en-US methods and philosophies en-US facilitates and stimulates a pasen-US -en-US sion for knowledge and preen-US -en-US pares the child for success in en-US life. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USAen-USs many of you know, I en-US have a weekly public en-US television show on en-US WDSC Channel 15. en-USOne of the best things about en-US doing the television program en-US is working with the crew en-US who help put the broadcast en-US together each week. Even for a en-US smaller-budget program like en-US ours, the TV production team en-US includes several people: a en-US production manager, an en-US assistant producer, a director, en-US a floor director, a technical en-US director, an audio person, en-US three camera operators and a en-US make-up artist! en-US Several members of the en-US crew are in their 20s, and en-US heres whats great they are en-US all inquisitive and eager to en-US learn about their finances! Not en-US only is the group highly en-US skilled in their individual en-US roles, but they are always en-US anxious to interact with me en-US and my guests between en-US segments. I truly enjoy sharing en-US my financial knowledge and en-US advice with them. So, one en-US morning, one of the camera en-US operators asked me this en-US question, and I thought it was en-US a relevant topic for this weeks en-US column. Ill paraphrase her en-US thoughts: en-US Ive got 401(k)s and IRAs en-US from previous employers and en-US they are just floating around en-US in limbo in a couple of en-US different locations. What en-US should I do? Should I leave en-US them alone or is there en-US something better I should be en-US doing with them?en-US Personally, I like the idea of en-US consolidating those en-US orphaned 401(k) accounts en-US (or other pre-tax, employen-US -en-US er-sponsored retirement en-US plans) into one IRA. The en-US reason is twofold: 1. A single en-US IRA account will be much en-US easier to manage. 2. More en-US money in one account en-US (instead of several) can open en-US up additional investment en-US choices to you. en-US What do I mean by that? en-US Well, if you are investing in en-US mutual funds, for example, en-US there is usually a minimum en-US investment to buy into the en-US fund. Some have greater en-US minimum investment en-US requirements than others. en-US More money means you have en-US a larger pool of investment en-US funds to choose from. You can en-US think of it like a casino, where en-US there are $5 tables, $10 tables, en-US $50 tables and $100 tables. en-US You cant play at a $100 table if en-US you only have $5. I think its en-US better to be able to play at en-US more tables, not fewer.en-US And, here is another en-US suggestion. Should there be a en-US year when you earn less en-US monen-US ey, and you have already en-US consolidated your IRA, you en-US might consider converting en-US some of the IRA into a Roth en-US IRA. You will have to pay en-US taxes on the money you roll en-US over into the Roth (since no en-US taxes have been paid thus far), en-US so you might not want do it en-US when your salary is at its peak. en-US One of the benefits of a Roth en-US IRA is that, once you pay en-US taxes, future growth and en-US withdrawals are tax free, as en-US long as you meet and comply en-US with the IRSs rules. en-US That was a great question en-US from the PlanStronger crew, en-US and Im sure there will be en-US many more when we start our en-US fifth season of production this en-US summer! If you have an en-US opportunity to watch, please en-US tune in!en-US David D. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. Its meant to en-US be tweaked.en-US The need for an overhaul of en-US the superintendents evaluaen-US -en-US tion became clear during last en-US years evaluation process, en-US when categories were left open en-US to interpretations, Mr. Doran en-US said.en-US There are a number of key en-US components that werent there en-US last year. There are lots of en-US instructions and definitions, en-US which I think is one thing the en-US board was running up against en-US last year, he said. A lot of en-US people were defining certain en-US things differently, and then the en-US evaluation en-US was coming out en-US different, and that probably en-US wasnt all that helpful.en-US The majority of last years en-US evaluation alternated between en-US very broad elements and those en-US with a more narrow focus, all en-US of which were mixed in en-US together, he said. The new en-US evaluation, however, begins en-US with the items that need a en-US broad look and ends with en-US those that need a more focused en-US approach to properly evaluate, en-US he said.en-US To form a more effective en-US tool, Ms. Cuthbert, Mr. Rusen-US -en-US sell, Mr. Doran and staff memen-US -en-US bers took strong evaluation en-US tools from other districts as en-US well as the strongest pieces of en-US their own instruments from en-US previous years, and devised en-US the new system, Ms. Cuen-US thbert en-US said.en-US We wanted to make sure en-US there was a stated purpose, en-US procedures, that we had our en-US competency descriptors, our en-US categories -we did collapse a en-US couple, she said. We put a en-US few together and we added en-US one.en-US The instrument also now en-US has a legend, definitions, and en-US expects supporting comments en-US from both the evaluating en-US board members as well as en-US from the superintendent. en-US Expectations are clearly en-US defined. For example, in the en-US student achievement category, en-US which has five stipulations in en-US the new instrument, she said, en-US based on what the superintenen-US-en-US dent submits, board members en-US can select from commendable, en-US reasonable progress towards en-US performance indicators, and en-US improvement expected. If en-US improvement is expected, en-US board members would then be en-US expected to provide supporten-US-en-US ing comments, and the superen-US -en-US intendent can make supporten-US -en-US ing comments as he addresses en-US those grades.en-US In addition to using other en-US districts evaluation instruen-US -en-US ments and previous years en-US Volusia County evaluations as en-US guidelines and models, the en-US tool is tailored specifically to en-US fit the district it serves, Mr. en-US Doran said.en-US All of this mirrors the en-US boards strategic plan, he said. en-US We used it every step of the en-US way and incorporated it.en-USGiving back en-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USCeil DeWolfe, left, and Diane Lessard, right, of The Palmetto Club of Daytoen-US-en-US na Beach presented a $5,000 donation to Cheryl Sullivan of Making Strides en-US Against Breast Cancer on Friday, May 4. en-USBy Gina McKeeen-USgmckee@hometownnewsol.com

Happy Memorial Day I en-US en-USwas a member of the en-US Volusia County Emergency en-US Management team that en-US helped during hurricane en-US emergencies for 15 years.en-US Its that time of year again en-US and this hurricane season may en-US be a little busy, so lets get en-US ready. First, be sure to get the en-US Hurricane Preparation Guide en-US that is available each year; it en-US provides great information.en-US Lets talk about how to get en-US ready. My wife is great about en-US getting ready for the storm en-US season. She starts buying en-US disaster food in March and en-US April a little at a time. She en-US follows all the sales and two en-US for ones and we are ready by en-US June. en-US How do you plan to cook en-US without power? Do you have en-US an outside grill? Great! Is it gas en-US operated or charcoal? Make en-US sure you have the fuel en-US available to cook. I recomen-US -en-US mend everyone have a small en-US gas cooktop as a backup. Chefs en-US use them all the time for chef en-US stations at catering parties. en-US They are not expensive, about en-US $20-$25, and operate on a en-US small gas tank the size of a en-US hair spray can. They are big en-US enough to handle a large en-US frying pan or pot. en-US You will be able to cook for en-US days and cook almost anyen-US -en-US thing. The local restaurant en-US supply stores have them. I give en-US them as gifts during Christen-US -en-US mas. Look on the internet as en-US well. en-US A coffee pot is important; en-US one that isnt electric. People en-US will be very upset without en-US their coffee. Buy a French en-US press coffee pot. Place ground en-US coffee in the pot, then add hot en-US water and let it steep a couple en-US minutes. Press down the en-US plunger top separating the en-US grinds from the coffee. This en-US makes great tasting coffee, and en-US be sure you have ground en-US coffee, not k-cups. en-US A good-sized ice chest is en-US also helpful. Have a good en-US supply of disposable plates, en-US cups, plastic ware and paper en-US towels. You also need trash en-US bags and lots of water. en-US Here are some shopping en-US ideas: Buy protein drinks; en-US shop for the highest protein en-US value you can find for high en-US energy. Oatmeal variety packs en-US are great because you just add en-US water and heat. How about en-US cereal with milk? Powdered en-US milk is OK or try to find en-US shelf-stable milk in cartons. en-US Evaporated canned milk is en-US milk that has the water taken en-US out. Add a can of water to a en-US can of evaporated milk and it en-US will be regular milk. en-US Plastic portion cups of fruits en-US are great; get a variety and get en-US juice mixes. You should start en-US stocking up on canned goods en-US like vegetables, canned en-US chicken, tuna, corned beef en-US hash, and chili no beans en-US (youll thank me later). Also en-US consider Spam, canned pasta en-US with meatballs or meat ravioli. en-US Think about getting canned en-US soups, dry spaghetti, boxes of en-US rice mixtures, and mac and en-US cheese. en-US Make sure you have all the en-US staples too like herbs, spices, en-US sugar, cooking oil or sprays, en-US chips, pita chips, and nachos. en-US Did you know corn bread mix en-US can be fried in a frying pan for en-US bread? en-US Now lets think about the en-US food in the refrigerator. After en-US a few hours, the cooler will be en-US too hot to keep food safely. en-US Cook everything you can that en-US is fresh. The freezer may last en-US up to two or three days if you en-US keep the door closed. Refrigen-US -en-US erated eggs have been washed, en-US so their protected cover is en-US removed. Leaving them out is en-US not a good idea. Do you know en-US a local farmer? If you have en-US farm fresh eggs from the farm en-US that have not been washed, en-US they can stay on the counter en-US for many days. Soft cheese en-US needs to be refrigerated; hard en-US cheeses like Gouda and en-US parmesan do not need to be en-US refrigerated.en-US Finally, write a menu of en-US meals and snacks for three to en-US six days consumption. When en-US you plan, everyone will be en-US happier knowing what to en-US expect. My recipe this week is: en-US Step 1, begin today to stock en-US up; Step 2, be prepared.en-US Costa Magoulas is dean of en-USthe Mori Hosseini College of en-US Hospitality and Culinary en-US Management at Daytona State en-US College. en-USB-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USPhoto courtesy of Sue Armstrongen-USSue Armstrong of DeLeon Springs holds an Amberen-US -en-US jack caught with Capt. If youd like to show off en-US your Catch of the Week, send a jpeg format photo en-US with your name, hometown and where you caught en-US the fish to newsdy-@hometownnewsol.com.en-USactually fish from those en-US bridges, I would catch nice en-US snook and some trout. en-US On this morning, I heard en-US fish striking in the dim light en-US under the bridge and was able en-US to pull out a feisty jack. A few en-US casts later and I was hooked en-US up once more and this time en-US the jack won. It managed to en-US rub my mono onto the pilings en-US and that was the end of the en-US Rapala. That was enough for en-US me and I headed north to en-US Main Street, the last fishable en-US bridge in the greater Daytona en-US Beach area. en-US When I arrived, I found a en-US couple fellows fishing for en-US sheeps head. After passing the en-US time, I moved on to the bridge en-US fenders on the northeast side en-US and began getting light hits on en-US my chartreuse jig. Finally I en-US was able to land a nice little en-US mangrove snapper. When the en-US other fishermen came to see en-US it, I gave one of them the en-US snapper and would later add en-US two more. As I left I vowed to en-US come back another day with en-US some dead shrimp and see en-US how many mangroves I could en-US get. I am never opposed to a en-US good snapper dinner. en-US After a long drive, I was all en-US the way up to High Bridge en-US near the Flagler County line. en-US That bridge has been producen-US -en-US tive for me for decades, but en-US now it was full light and I en-US knew that was not good. en-US Almost all of the fish I have en-US caught there came in the dim en-US light of morning. Traditionally en-US that span is known for snook en-US and gator trout, but on this en-US day a single ladyfish was all I en-US could manage. en-US On the ride home I thought en-US about what I had just experien-US -en-US enced. Four bridges and the en-US only anglers I had seen were en-US the pair at Main Street. The en-US days of hundreds of fisher folk en-US lined up on the bridges is en-US gone. The fish are gone. The en-US people are gone and for sure en-US the bridges are practically en-US gone.en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years. It en-US always looked like fun and en-US now I am wondering what en-US happened to that? en-US Sadly those days are gone, en-US lost mostly because of fewer en-US fish, fishermen and bridges en-US where we might fish. Locally en-US our days of fishing from en-US bridges are rapidly becoming en-US extinct. en-US Orange Avenue is the latest en-US casualty. For years I fished en-US that bridge and had lots of en-US fine catches there. Now, once en-US the new high rise span is comen-US -en-US pleted, they will probably en-US build a short pier beneath it, en-US but it usually takes about 10 en-US years for the place to recover en-US and begin producing fish. en-US Each time a bridge is rebuilt en-US the nearby marine habitat is en-US all but destroyed.en-US On a recent spring morning en-US I decided to give bridge en-US fishing a try and drove down en-US to the Dunlawton Causeway. en-US The low bridges on the west en-US end still provide folks with a en-US good platform. I arrived in en-US the pre-dawn and was happy en-US to see that traffic was slow.en-US With snook in mind, I en-US began throwing a gray and en-US white Rapala Twitchbait plug. en-US The tide was roaring out, so I en-US fished the south side. On each en-US cast, I would throw right en-US along the bridge and allow the en-US bait to wash south with the en-US flow. Before long I had a en-US strong hit and landed a fat en-US 15-inch bluefish. A good en-US fight, but not the snook I en-USsought. en-US In the following half hour, I en-US caught three more blues. en-US Next I drove south on U.S. 1 en-US to try my luck at the three en-US bridges of Spruce Creek.
