en-USCounty celebrates National en-US Travel and Tourism Weeken-USThe futures so bright we have to wear shades en-US said Executive Director Georgia Turner of the West en-US Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority at a meeting en-US of Volusia County tourism industry leaders May 9. en-US The event at the new Hard Rock Hotel Daytona en-US Beach was to celebrate National Travel & Tourism en-US Week along with the record-breaking tourism ecoen-US -en-US nomic impact and job growth for local businesses in en-US 2017. en-US Along with Ms. Turner, the event featured a en-US speaker panel representing all three county tourism en-US promotion bureaus, including Lori Campbell Baker en-US of Daytona Beach and Debbie Meihls of New Smyren-US -en-US na Beach. Other panel members were Rick Karl with en-US Daytona Beach International Airport, Tim Riddle en-US with the Ocean Center and Evelyn Fine with en-US Mid-Florida Marketing and Research. en-US According to statistics presented by the en-US Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors en-US Bureau, in 2017, overnight visitors spent a en-US record-breaking $6.09 billion in Volusia en-US County, a 1.5 percent increase from last year. en-US Tourism generated an estimated 55,200 jobs en-US overall with a $734 million payroll that grew en-US by 33 percent. The lodging industry generated 3,450 en-US direct jobs in Volusia, representing a $75 million en-US payroll and a 34 percent increase. In 2017, a total of en-US 10 million visitors came to Volusia, half of which en-US stayed in hotels and motels, and half with friends en-US and family, representing a 2 percent increase. en-US The industry leaders expressed excitement as en-US tourism continues to grow. The countys beaches en-US and other outdoor amenities attract millions of visien-US -en-US tors while the Daytona Beach International Airport en-US and en-US Ocean Center are en-US also big drivers to bring people here. en-US Statistics show, since 2009, DBIA passenger traffic en-US increased 70 percent. In 2017, the airport saw the en-US most passengers, 720,825, since 1997. en-US Smaller airports are going away, Mr. Karl said. en-US We are the exception to the rule. JetBlue is doing en-USThe Volusia County en-US School Board voted unanien-US-en-US mously not to continue with en-US an appeal in the multi-disen-US -en-US trict lawsuit challenging en-US House Bill 7069, which takes en-US away some of the school disen-US -en-US tricts control over approving en-US charter schools.en-US Second Circuit Court en-US Judge John C. Cooper ruled en-US in favor of the state, and the en-US district was notified April 17, en-US which started the 30-day en-US countdown to request an en-US appeal, said Michael Dyer, en-US attorney for Volusia County en-US Schools. en-US This is one of two lawsuits en-US the school board did authoen-US -en-US rize and this is the primary en-US suit that challenged six speen-US -en-US cific provisions in House Bill en-US 7069, Mr. Dyer said. (The en-US ruling) starts a 30-day time en-US clock on whether or not to en-US file an appeal on that order.en-US Volusia County Schools en-US united with 12 other school en-US districts across the state early en-US this year to challenge the bill en-US on the basis that several of en-US the bills provisions were en-US unconstitutional.en-US Of those 13, nine have en-US approved, or have indicated en-US they may approve, going foren-US -en-US ward, Mr. Dyer said. Based en-US on that participation rate en-US the board had originally en-US approved a budget for particen-US -en-US ipating in this lawsuit of en-US $25,000. The cost per district en-US was based on enrollment, en-US and Volusia is still within en-US that budget.en-US However, a lengthy battle, en-US with fewer districts sharing en-US the costs means a with a en-US higher price tag -and funds en-US are in shorter supply, which en-US fueled the vote to drop out of en-US the coalition.en-US Among those areas the disen-US -en-USVolusia Schools en-US wont appeal suit en-US on charter bill en-USHard Rock lifer en-US helps open Daytona en-US Beach hotelen-USRita Gilligan, the first en-US waitress in the first Hard en-US Rock Cafe was on hand to en-US help Daytona Beach celeen-US -en-US brate the official grand openen-US -en-US ing of the Hard Rock Hotel en-US Tuesday, May 1.en-US Known as Lovely Rita, en-US Cultural Attach, Ms. Gillien-US -en-US gan has been working at the en-US original Hard Rock Cafe in en-US London since June 14, 1971, en-US only stopping to give birth to en-US her daughter, Tara.en-US Rita, who was dubbed en-US Lovely Rita after The Beaten-US -en-US les song, took on the role of en-US Goodwill Ambassador for en-US the Hard Rock in 1988. She en-US travels to Hard Rock Cafes en-US and Hotels throughout the en-US world, training new staff en-US members and passing on her en-US knowledge of the Love All, en-US Serve All ethos that can en-US only come from working en-US with an establishment for en-US over 40 years.en-US According to a company en-US provided bio, Ms. Gilligan en-US was born in 1941 in Galway, en-US Ireland, into a strict Catholic en-US family. She never dreamed en-US she would spend more than en-US half of her life serving rock en-US stars and celebrities at a en-US restaurant. en-US Through the years, she has en-US served The Beatles, The Rollen-US -en-US ing Stones, Abba, Andre en-US Agassi, Muhammad Ali, en-US Tony Bennett, Chuck Berry, en-US Jon Bon Jovi, Rock Hudson, en-US Sir Elton John, Tom Jones, en-US Liza Minelli, Paul Newman, en-US Prince Albert of Monaco, en-US Nancy Sinatra, Steven Spielen-US -en-US berg, Sting, Patrick Swayze, en-US Pete Townshend, and on and en-US on.en-US An advertisement in the en-US Evening Standard looking en-US for matronly waitresses en-US ages 30 to 55 with strong peren-US -en-US sonalities brought her to en-US Hard Rock Cafe London for en-US an interview. Hard Rocks en-US co-founder, Peter Morton, en-US was so impressed with Ritas en-US wit and confidence, (Im the en-US best youre gonna get, so en-US youd better take me!), he en-US asked her to start right then en-US Photo by Diane Careyen-USRita Gilligan, the first waitress to serve at the first en-US Hard Rock Cafe in London, England, in 1971 is en-US still working to this day and was on hand to celeen-US -en-US brate the grand opening of the Hard Rock Hotel en-US Daytona on May 1. en-USSurvivor en-US talks en-US about en-US horrors en-US to schoolen-USIf I hate, they win. en-US Holocaust survivor Claire en-US Soria delivered many such en-US powerful words to St. Brendan en-US Catholic School children en-US Wednesday, May 2, at the en-US Ormond Beach school.en-US Sixth, seventh and eight en-US graders watched and listened en-US in total silence as she told her en-US story.en-US Ms. Soria, 83, went into hiden-US -en-US ing at age six in Brussels, Belen-US -en-US gium, where she was born, en-US sheltered by neighbors Lamen-US -en-US bert and Leah Saboux. It was en-US during the Holocaust when en-US Nazi Germany in World War en-US II murdered millions of Euroen-US-en-US pean Jews between 1941 and en-US 1945. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USwas sent to the United States en-US and lived with distant relatives en-US before becoming part of the en-US foster care system. en-US There are not that many of en-US us left, so they want to make en-US sure they hear our voices, Ms. en-US Soria said. They (Sabaux) en-US risked their lives so that I en-US would live. I lost everyone and en-US everything during the war. en-US The names I was called and en-US the names I heard from people en-US were worsen-US e than what you en-US would call an animal. It was so en-US awful. (But) I am not bitter. en-US There is so much to be thanken-US -en-US ful for. en-US She also credits the Saboux en-US family with teaching her how en-US to play the piano, and Ms. en-US Soria still gives lessons. She en-US had to leave school during the en-US war.en-US Ms. Soria brought letters, en-US books, a basket given to her by en-US her father that she saved, and en-US pictures, particularly of family en-US members, for the children to en-US see. Also, she showed her en-US video, Claires Story, a Holoen-US-en-US caust Survivor Remembers. en-US She recalled how her life en-US changed at age five with memen-US-en-US ories of soldiers and tanks, and en-US hearing bomen-US bs going off. en-US No one has the right to tell en-US us what faith we should have en-US or what faith we should not en-US have she said. We are all one. en-US If we treat each other with en-US respect, regardless of religion en-US and regardless of our past, this en-US will really be such a breaken-US -en-US through to living.en-US The children were allowed en-US to ask Ms. Soria anything they en-US wanted after her formal preen-US -en-US sentation. She was presented en-US flowers by the children and the en-US children signed a list of pledgen-US -en-US es promising they would speak en-US out against racism and prejuen-US-en-US dice they may witness. Prior to en-US Ms. Sorias presentation, a conen-US -en-US tingent of eighth graders also en-US performed some readings, en-US including a prayer service they en-US put together for the occasion. en-US Ms. Soria said she is always en-US willing to talk to groups and en-US will now add mention of Colen-US -en-US leen Coughlin to her story, the en-US St. Brendans eighth grader en-US who recently performed as en-US Anne Frank at the commuen-US -en-US nitywide Yom HaShoah, or en-US annual Holocaust Memorial en-US Observance, April 22 at the en-US Chabad Lubavitch in Ormond en-US Beach.en-US Colleen, 14, who was at St. en-US Brendan, said, I have always en-US been interested in the Holoen-US -en-US caust and the atrocities that en-US surround it. When I was in en-US fifth grade I read the Diary of en-US Anne Frank for the first time. en-US Then I begged my parents to en-US go to the Holocaust Museum en-US in D.C. We went and I read six en-US more books. I watched a movie en-US about Anne Franks life. I en-US watched multiple videos. So, en-US when the history fair came en-US around this year, Conflict and en-US Compromise, I thought whats en-US better than something that can en-US still have meaning today.en-US Lizanne Swaringen, an en-US instructor at St. Brendan en-US whose students helped prepare en-US the event, said I feel that eduen-US-en-US cating the middle school about en-US the Holocaust shows them en-US what happens when people en-US turn against one another and en-US let hate guide their choices. en-US Claire Sorias story shows en-US that many had the courage to en-US care and Claire will not let hate en-US win. Her message is powerful en-US and one that my students need en-US to hear, Ms. Swaringen said. en-US The 6,7, and 8 grades just en-US completed a reading unit on en-US the Holocaust and were en-US touched by the stories. Learnen-US -en-US ing what happened to so many en-US Jewish people has shocked en-US them and motivated them to en-US spread the word that intoleren-US -en-US ance of people is unacceptable.en-US The story of the persecuted en-US Jewish people should be told en-US often. If my students hear en-US these stories and tell these stoen-US en-USries and become a more toleren-US -en-US ant person who speaks out en-US against hate because of it, then en-US I have done my job as their en-US teacher, she said.en-US Ms. Soria lives in Palm en-US Coast and was married for 58 en-US years to her husband, Gerard, en-US who died three years ago. en-US They have three children, six en-US grandchildren and two great en-US grandchildren. That en-US two-inch pipe filled bottles, en-US pots, barrels and all sorts of en-US plastic containers on a steady en-US basis. It was never easy to get a en-US fill-up, for the line was always en-US long. en-US Back then, my folks lived in en-US Deland, so I often drove past en-US the well, and it was a rare gift en-US to get there and find no line. en-US On a hot day, I would put my en-US entire head under the en-US 72-degree flow for a nice en-US cooldown before drinking my en-US fill.en-US Back in 1904, Orange Citys en-US water was given the worlds en-US highest award at the Louisiana en-US Purchase Exposition. Rockefeller, the en-US worlds richest man, took en-US notice and insisted on en-US drinking no other. He took the en-US water along on all his trips en-US around the world and even en-US brought along enough to en-US bathe in. These days, Blue en-US Spring and its large group of en-US winter-resident manatees en-US make the state park there one en-US of the busiest in Florida.en-US Another great stop in en-US Orange City is the large en-US Heritage Inn built in 1886 and en-US still operated today. Back then, en-US folks needed a place to stay en-US when they came south to take en-US advantage of the supposedly en-US healing springs. Originally en-US named the De Yarman House, en-US the Inn was bought by famed en-US racing promoter Ralph en-US Hankinson in 1936. Once en-US refurbished, it was host to en-US many of the race-car drivers en-US who drove into history on en-US Daytonas beach. en-US Mr. Hankinson had enjoyed en-US a long and varied career in en-US racing and was well-respected en-US by speedway owners and en-US drivers alike. In 1937, Mr. Bill en-US France Sr. was looking for help en-US in promoting the new en-US stock-car races on the beach en-US and gave Mr. Hankinson a en-US call. When Ralph saw a collect en-US call from big Bill (costing .25 en-US cents), he refused it. That has en-US to go down as one of the worst en-US decisions in auto racing en-US history. en-US As a beach racing historian, en-US I still find that the name of en-US The Heritage Inn occasionally en-US comes up. A few years ago, I en-US was researching a 1930 Pierce en-US Arrow beach racer and was en-US having a difficult time. Sure en-US enough, my investigation en-US would wind up taking me to en-US the Inn, where I learned the en-US car had been stored many en-US years ago. en-US Today, the 1886 Heritage en-US Inn still serves visitors to en-US Orange City and is a walk en-US down memory lane for all en-US who go there. We have lost en-US many of our fine old hotels en-US like the Ormond and the en-US Issena, but the Heritage has en-US survived to carry on the en-US tradition of the big hotels that en-US were originally built to host en-US winter guests who were trying en-US to escape the northern en-US temperatures.en-US Take a trip to Orange City, en-US but dont expect to see en-US oranges. Its all about the en-US water.en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. Any en-US decent restaurant would be a gold mine in this area. en-USNot so shovel readyen-USWhile I applaud The City of Ormond Beach for adding the en-US three new park benches to the Riviera Park waterfront, it is all en-US clear to me now why the added half-cent sales tax is needed. en-US I see it takes five men to pour a three-foot-by-five-foot cement en-US pad. While two men are working, three men are standing around en-US holding up shovels. What will become of these men when a en-US shovel is invented that can stand up on its own? en-US The Ormond Beach mayor wants his slice of the half-cent en-US sales tax increase because he needs it to pay for the extra men on en-US the citys payroll. Maybe the citys existing tax revenue should be en-US reviewed to see if there might be some bloating in the budget en-US and where the city could use this extra money more effectively. en-USWho are these doctors?en-USThis is about medical insurance. The en-US company also plans to create en-US Farmton, a community that en-US could eventually have as many en-US as 25,000 residents.en-US So, why the move to cattle en-US when Miami Corp.s operaen-US -en-US tions have mainly been en-US timber, hunting leases and en-US mitigation banking?en-US For Adams Ranch, it makes en-US lots of sense, because it gives en-US the company a lot more land en-US to raise cattle, and its pretty en-UScheap to feed them when you en-US have hundreds of acres of en-US grass. In the announcement, en-US the companies noted the cattle en-US operation could spread to all en-US of the 60,000 acres Miami en-US Corp. owns in south Volusia en-US and north Brevard counties. en-US For Miami Corp., it could en-US mean millions of dollars of en-US savings on taxes while it clears en-US land and gets ready to develop en-US it.en-US In Volusia, the value placed en-US on timberland, depending on en-US soil potential, is $70 to $310 en-US per acres while the value on en-US pastureland is $23 to $200 per en-US acre, depending on whether it en-US is improved, semi-improved en-US or native unimproved and en-US also soil potential, according en-US to John Hawkins of the en-US Volusia Property Appraisers en-US office.en-US Im guessing the land will en-US get rated on the low end as en-US native unimproved land, so en-US well take the $23 an acre, en-US subtract that from the low end en-US of timber of $70 and get $47 en-US per acre. On 1,125 acres, were en-US talking a savings of $52,785, en-US which isnt much. But now en-US multiply it by 60,000 acres en-US over about 5 years. Go ahead, en-US Ill wait, which is what Miami en-US Corp. is doing while it en-US continues to make money on en-US the timber and hunting leases. en-US ***en-US OConnor Capital Partners en-US has submitted a master en-US development request to the en-US City of Daytona Beach for 134 en-US acres along the northeast en-US quadrant of I-95 and LPGA en-US Boulevard and Williamson en-US Boulevard. Careyen-USdcarey@hometownnewsol.comen-USAen-USs you well know, I often en-US encourage my readers en-US to meet with an en-US experienced adviser if they en-US need financial products or en-US services. en-US But what are some of the en-US things you should consider en-US before, and during, that first en-US appointment? Here is a short en-US list:en-US 1. Think about what you en-US want. Give some serious en-US thought to why you are going en-US to see the adviser. Are you en-US looking for growth, or en-US protection, of your money? en-US Do you need income? Do you en-US want an estate plan? Are you en-US concerned about long-term en-US care? en-US Let me tell you a quick en-US story. Several years ago, my en-US wife, Toni, and I stopped at a en-US music store. One of us had en-US decided to learn an instruen-US -en-US ment, specifically the guitar. en-US We strolled around the store en-US and talked extensively with en-US the salesperson. An hour later, en-US when we finally walked out of en-US the music store, guess what we en-US had purchased? A Piano! You en-US can avoid this same fate when en-US you meet with an adviser. en-US Listen to suggestions, recomen-US -en-US mendations and options, but en-US make sure you leave with the en-US product, service or solution en-US you went in for!en-US 2. No office? Personally, Id en-US be skeptical of an adviser who en-US asks to meet at your home and en-US doesnt have a brick-and-moren-US -en-US tar office. How committed (or en-US successful) is the person who en-US has no physical business en-US location? How secure will en-US your personal information be en-US . in his/her car!? en-US 3. Keep your guard up. It en-US doesnt matter how you found en-US out about the adviser, even if en-US he/she was highly recomen-US -en-US mended by a close friend or en-US relative; remain skeptical and en-US treat the encounter like the en-US person was picked randomly en-US online or from the phone en-US book.en-US 4. Bring a friend. When you en-US go to the advisers office, make en-US sure to bring your spouse, or, en-US if you are single, bring a en-US relative or good friend. Its en-US helpful to have another set of en-US eyes and ears to catch any en-US details you might miss. Also, en-US an objective third-party can en-US critique the adviser, and be a en-US valuable sounding board for en-US proposed proen-US ducts and en-US recommendations.en-US 5. Ask questions. There are en-US literally dozens of questions to en-US ask during an initial meeting. en-US Here, however, Ill narrow it en-US down to the top five: 1. Which en-US licenses and credentials do en-US you hold? 2. Who is your en-US supervisor and regulator? 3. en-US How long have you been in en-US the business and how long do en-US you plan to continue? 4. Will en-US your recommendations be in en-US writing (including fees, en-US expenses and what youre en-US paid)? 5. Will you act as my en-US fiduciary/advocate?en-US I know that meeting with en-US an adviser for the first time en-US can be a bit intimidating. en-US Youre entrusting this person en-US with your financial informaen-US -en-US tion as well as your goals for en-US the future. Just be cautious. en-US Dont be afraid to ask quesen-US -en-US tions. Bring another person en-US with you. And, lastly, know en-US exactly what you want to en-US accomplish before your en-US scheduled appointment that en-US way, youll walk out of the en-US office with the products and en-US services you really want and en-US not a piano!en-US David D. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. The en-US decision of whether a School en-US of Hope operates within a disen-US-en-US trict rests entirely with that en-US entity if they are pre-approved en-US by the state Board of Educaen-US -en-US tion.en-US The legislation also changed en-US the charter school agreements en-US between local boards of educaen-US-en-US tion and the charter schools to en-US a standardized agreement proen-US-en-US vided by the state. Local en-US boards previously used a en-US model agreement, which left en-US room for some negotiation, en-US Mr. Dyer said.en-US Perhaps one of the biggest en-US areas of concern is the re-asen-US -en-US signment of ad valorem tax en-US dollen-US ars to charter schools.en-US Specifically what this en-US House Bill 7069 does, is it en-US diverts your local ad valorem en-US taxes, levied in the form of en-US what they call discretionary en-US capital outlay funds, which is en-US capped at 1.5 mills, Mr. Dyer en-US said. And the state would en-US re-distribute that money to en-US charter schools before (local en-US districts) receive it.en-US When schools spend capital en-US dollars, it is for a project en-US theyveen-US discussed, voted and en-US approved. This provision en-US would change that process, he en-US said.en-USBillen-USFrom page A1

en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill B-3en-USMen-USemories of the chefs en-US yelling and screamen-US -en-US ing, Vegetarian en-US Dish! still echo in my ears. en-US It was not all that many en-US years ago when you went out en-US to dine that you ate what was en-US on the menu and liked it. en-US Front of the house staff were en-US afraid to ask the chef, hold the en-US gravy, little less salt, can you en-US broil and not fry my food? en-US What do you have for a en-US vegetarian meal? en-US I guess chefs have mellowed en-US over the years or maybe they en-US are just getting smarter. Lets en-US face it, we are in the hospitalien-US -en-US ty business and the customer en-US is what drives our success. In en-US todays changing world, we en-US need to be better informed en-US and knowledgeable about all en-US foods and trends. In the U.S. en-US there are around 7 million en-US vegetarians, however, studies en-US indicate about one third of en-US Americans going out to eat en-US will choose a vegetarian dish. en-US We also need to understand en-US what kind of vegetarians are en-US out there: en-US Lacto-vegetariandiets en-US exclude meat, fish, poultry en-US and eggs as well as foods that en-US contain them. Dairy products, en-US such as milk, cheese, yogurt, en-US and butter, are included.en-US Lacto-ovo vegetariandiets en-US exclude meat, fish and poultry, en-US but allow dairy products and en-US eggs.en-US Ovo-vegetariandiets en-US exclude meat, poultry, seafood en-US and dairy products, but allow en-US eggs.en-US Vegandiets exclude meat, en-US poultry, fish, eggs and dairy en-US products, and foods that en-US contain these products.en-US Many years ago I competed en-US in a culinary competition and en-US I decided to do something en-US different. I used quinoa and en-US made a vegetarian entre. en-US Three out of the four judges en-US did not know what quinoa was en-US and these were culinary en-US Olympic judges. Times are a en-US changing. If youd like en-US to show off your Catch of the Week, send a jpeg format photo with your en-US name, hometown and where you caught the fish to newsdy-@hometownen-US-en-US newsol.com.en-USCatch of the week en-USIen-USn my own egotistical way, I en-US tend to believe you, the en-US readers, are paying close en-US attention and are keeping up en-US with my fishing successes and en-US failures. en-USJust in case that is not the en-US actuality, please allow me to en-US fill you in. For the past couple en-US months I have been enjoying a en-US steady take of spotted sea en-US trout. For some time now I en-US have been averaging a nice en-US four-fish limit on almost every en-US trip and have been having a en-US ball releasing many more of en-US those scrappy trout. Life is en-US good, right? Any angler would en-US be happy with a report like en-US that. I sure am. en-US Still, you may recall last en-US December I wrote a year-end en-US summary of my 2017 fishing en-US year. In that column I told en-US you of my year-long success en-US with trout. but complained en-US about my lack of a good red en-US drum take. I promised myself en-US in 2018 I would concentrate en-US more on reds. Well here I am en-US doing it again. Trout, trout en-US and few redfish. So far, I only en-US remember catching five red en-US drum in 2018. A poor en-US performance to be sure. en-US My only excuse is I am en-US doing just what I always en-US preach: Never leave fish to en-US look for fish! I know where to en-US find trout and they are my en-US wife, Lanas, favorite at dinner en-US time. en-US Knowing all of that, I en-US recently loaded The Green en-US Peanut onto the truck with en-US redfish on my mind. I was en-US pretty sure I knew where to en-US find some as I launched the en-US kayak just east of the old Boat en-US Bar in Port Orange. The tide en-US was running out strong just as en-US I had planned. My destination en-US was a deep hole hidden back en-US in the mangroves. It is a spot en-US that is only about 25 feet by 25 en-US and holds around six feet of en-US water at low tide. en-US If you have my book, I en-US Swear The Snook Drowned, en-US it is well described in the first en-US chapter. That is the place my en-US cousin, Randy, and I were en-US headed when we encountered en-US the naked red man who lived en-US as a swamp hermit back then. en-US He is long gone, but the hole en-US is still there and is the only en-US depth in a very skinny-water en-US flat. en-US The place is best fished at en-US low tide, for when the tide is en-US high, the fish can scatter all en-US across miles of flats to feed, en-US but once the tide recedes they en-US have no other place to go for en-US safety. At low tide, it is like en-US shooting fish in a barrel, but is en-US always difficult to get to. On en-US this day I had to get out and en-US pull the kayak along in places.en-US Once there, I baited with en-US dead shrimp from Donalds en-US Bait on the Port Orange en-US causeway. One of the proben-US -en-US lems with fishing that place en-US with shrimp is the hoards of en-US bait snatchers also living en-US there. My first four hook-ups en-US were three sailors choice and en-US one grunt. The fifth fish to en-US come in was a small 17 inch en-US redfish. en-US I would catch seven more en-US undersized reds before en-US landing one of barely 18 en-US inches to keep. After that, I en-US would hook seven more small en-US red drum, making my total 15 en-US for the day. Nothing great, but en-US a number that would surely en-US improve my redfish take for en-US 2018. en-US Once back at home in en-US Ormond-by-the-Sea, I went to en-US my fish cleaning table as en-US usual, but the one small red en-US was less than impressive. Lana en-US came out to take a look at my en-US catch as she often does, but en-US when she saw the one little en-US red, she just shook her head en-US and went back inside. She en-US didnt have to say it. When en-US you know where to get a en-US four-fish trout limit, why am I en-US wasting time with one small en-US red drum? I dont know.en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years.
