en-USWith the rallying cry Save Our Children, Fighten-US -en-US ing Against Injustice Towards Harmony supporters en-US showed up by the hundreds at Peabody Auditorium en-US in Daytona Beach Monday, April 30, to see where en-US local leaders stood on reducing juvenile arrests by en-US giving civil citations instead and also taking a closer en-US look at school suspensions.en-US State Attorney R.J. Larizza, Volusia County Sheriff en-US Mike Chitwood, Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig en-US Capri and Dan Merrithew of the Department of en-US Juvenile Justice attended and pledged support for en-US giving juveniles civil citations for minor crimes. en-US Youth who commit sex crimes or crimes with weapen-US -en-US ons would not be eligible for a civil citation. en-US Out of 67 counties in Florida, Volusia en-US County ranks fifth highest in out of school en-US suspension rate and seventh highest in school en-US arrest rate, statistics presented at the rally en-US showed. Further, arrests cost $4,500 comen-US -en-US pared to $400 for a civil citation. Presenters en-US stressed that civil citations are not a slap on en-US the wrist, but rather assign restitution and en-US atonement. en-US The state attorneys office has committed to overen-US -en-US seeing restitution. Mr. Larizza said Now we have en-US kids going through the program that would not have en-US previously.en-US It is a balance between victims and their loss and en-US kids suffering consequences that can follow them en-US the rest of their lives, he said. I am confident that en-US we will be able to do that with this new policy. I am en-US also en-US confident victims, en-US once they understand what the civil citaen-US-en-US tion process is or is going to be, are persuaded or en-US encouraged and I think are going to be happy, to en-US participate and approve of that program.en-US The two-hour meeting, which focused on youth en-US criminal justice, included testimony from a teachers en-USF.A.I.T.H group seeks en-US to Save Our Children en-USAt the request of Volusia en-US Countys 16 cities, voters will en-US not see a referendum for a en-US half-cent sales tax increase en-US on their ballots in November.en-US Instead, the council will en-US begin workshops in June to en-US review and perhaps revise en-US developers impact fees, en-US which havent changed since en-US 2003, council members said en-US after postponing the scheden-US-en-US uled vote to place the sales en-US tax on the ballot.en-US At a roundtable discussion en-US Monday, April 30, at Daytona en-US International Airport, Voluen-US-en-US sia County mayors agreed en-US now is not the time for the en-US tax referendum, noting issues en-US ranging from an over-crowden-US -en-US ed ballot to growing public en-US displeasure with growth in en-US the county.en-US We got to the line of en-US scrimmage and things en-US changed a little bit when en-US we adopted our resolution en-US (in favor of the half-cent sales en-US tax) we didnt know how en-US many items were going to be en-US on the ballot, DeLand Mayor en-US Bob Apgar said.en-US In addition to an en-US over-crowded ballot, on en-US which the referendum would en-US potentially get lost in the en-US mix, a new mandate from the en-US state requiring audits of of en-US sales tax uses before it goes en-US on the ballot added to the en-US mayors concerns.en-US The issue of the audit was en-US a new issue that came en-US through the process, Mayor en-US Apgar said. I think all of us en-US have worked hard to get to en-US this point and I think its en-US important that we give both en-US our citizens and our commuen-US-en-USCounty Council en-US postpones sales en-US tax referendum en-USSixty en-US years of en-US 'Lightnin en-US at DISen-USFast cars have nothing on en-US Juanita Lightnin Epton, en-US who, at 97, is still working en-US hard at Daytona Internationen-US-en-US al Speedway. en-US On Tuesday, May 1, DIS en-US staff surprised her by celeen-US -en-US brating her 60th service en-US anniversary. en-US She started with the Speeden-US -en-US way in 1958, selling tickets to en-US the first Daytona 500 in 1959. en-US Ms. Epton, who lives in en-US Ormond Beach, still works in en-US the ticket office.en-US Media and staff applauded en-US the popular staff member as en-US she entered the Bill France en-US Room at DIS, having no idea en-US the party was for her. en-US Still, she offered plenty of en-US memories for the occasion.en-US I met Bill France in Charen-US -en-US lotte, N.C., in 1957, she said. en-US He said Lightnin, you are en-US going to Florida. We ended en-US up here in 1958 and I have en-US seen a lot of changes. I have en-US met the nicest people along en-US the way and I wouldnt en-US change it for anything in the en-US world. en-US I am still counting the en-US tickets and I still love every en-US minute of it, Ms. Epton said. en-US The Frances are just wonen-US -en-US derful people and, as a en-US friend, you couldnt have had en-US better all along the way.en-US Her teacher was Annie B. en-US France, memorialized with en-US her husband, Big Bill France, en-US with a statue in front of the en-US Speedway.en-US You didnt hesitate to do en-US what she asked you to do en-US because you knew it was for en-US the best, Ms. Epton said. en-US We all have been fortunate en-US to have such leadership and en-US weve got good leadership en-US now.en-US The best part of my job is en-US waking up in the morning en-US and knowing I have a good en-US and secure place to work, en-US she said. It makes my day go en-US fast, but I love it. We try to be en-US nice to everyone so they en-US know they are at the right en-US track and (with) the right en-US ambassadors. en-US Her doctor told her she en-US was only 97, so Ive got plenen-US -en-US ty of years left, Ms. Epton en-US said.en-US She plans on working as en-US long as the good Lord lets en-US me.en-US Jim France, chairman of en-US International Speedway en-US Corp., started working at the en-US Speedway at the same time as en-US Ms. Epton, although he was en-US just 14.en-US At the party, he said, I en-US Photo courtesy of Daytona International Speedwayen-USJim France, chairman of International Speedway Corp., congratulates Juanen-US -en-US ita Lightnin Epton on her 60th anniversary of working at Daytona Interen-US -en-US national Speedway. en-USHot rods en-US will en-US muscle en-US into en-US museumen-USThe annual American Musen-US -en-US cle Car Show is revving up for en-US the public to enjoy on from 10 en-US a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May en-US 12, at the Museum of Arts and en-US Sciences at 352 S. The event will feature en-US 50 to 90, fully restored muscle en-US cars from the 1950s forward, en-US such as Mustangs and Coren-US -en-US vettes. Various car clubs will en-US be represented. en-US We put this unique show en-US on because we have power and en-US speed in the museum with the en-US Sumar racing cars, Mr. Zachaen-US -en-US rias said. I have been putting en-US this show on for about five en-US years now and it relates to the en-US museum in that we do have en-US these cars here. These cars en-US hark back to when Detroit was en-US building a lot of cars that had en-US power and speed. They are en-US compelling qualities that en-US Americans love. So, it was en-US important for a lot of these en-US automakers to make sure that en-US not only these cars looked en-US cool, but also had a winning en-US reputation. These cars are top en-US notch.en-US The love affair with muscle en-US cars shifts from area to area.en-US Automobiles transcend en-US decades of generations, Mr. en-US Zacharias said. They evoke en-US emotions and stories.en-US It is sort of like a Fast and en-US Furious, but vintage in retro, en-US he said. The whole Fast and en-US Furious thing basically came en-US out of muscle cars. These cars en-US go from generation to generaen-US -en-US tion. These automakers for en-US sure want to make their cars en-US cool and appealing and they en-US are always trying to outdo en-US each other. That hasnt en-US changed.en-US Mr. Zacharias speaks from en-US experience.en-US I owned a 1970 GTX Roaden-US -en-US runner back when I was en-US younger, he said. It was just en-US amazing. It gave you instant en-US fame. People are very intrigued en-US by them and find them fascien-US -en-US nating. One thing en-US about motorheads, if it burns en-US fuel, somebody is in love with en-US it. That was pretty evident as en-US the Jeep Beach event has en-US grown substantially. There was en-US everything from mudders to en-US Hummers. Every type of en-US four-wheel drive, open vehicle en-US that rolls was here in force and en-US many of them were trailered en-US down from distant points. Im en-US sure that event provided a nice en-US boost to the local economy. en-US Seeing all of those Jeeps did en-US remind me of a phenomenon I en-US encountered while working as en-US a contractor in Illinois back in en-US the middle 1970s. I did a lot of en-US work in a near west Chicago en-US suburb that was populated by en-US old Victorian/Edwardian and en-US gothic-style homes that en-US anyone would class in the en-US million-dollar variety. The en-US residents there were all people en-US of means and each garage held en-US a couple of nice Mercedes, en-US Jaguars, Cadillacs or Lincolns. en-US After a while, I began to en-US notice a trend. None of these en-US wealthy people used their fine en-US automobiles for everyday en-US junkets, like taking the kids to en-US school or going to the market. en-US In fact, they seldom took en-US those cars out of the garage at en-US all. Instead, each driveway en-US held a Jeep. The mothers, en-US fathers and teenagers all used en-US the utility vehicle for lifes en-US more mundane chores. en-US I remember at the time I en-US found it unusual for all these en-US expensive homes to own a en-US Jeep, which back then was en-US considered by most to be an en-US off-road vehicle and not very en-US stylish. Most of the Jeeps were en-US not pretty or sporty or en-US anything like that, though en-US most did have removable side en-US curtains. I am certain in the en-US harsh Illinois winters the en-US four-wheel drive Jeeps were en-US practical, if not all that en-US comfortable. en-US At the time I mentioned this en-US happening to anyone who en-US cared to listen, though most en-US were uninterested. As it later en-US turned out, I was in on the en-US birth of the SUV bonanza that en-US would take over the American en-US auto market in the 1980s and en-US s. Apparently that same en-US sort of thing was happening en-US all across the U. S. and Detroit en-US was paying attention. en-US Before too long almost en-US every home in America would en-US own some sort of vehicle en-US classed as a sports utility en-US vehicle. Sure those refined en-US Jeeps quickly became a pretty en-US far stretch from those basic en-US types I had seen in the en-US Chicago area, but make no en-US mistake about it, soon en-US grandmothers began driving en-US four-wheel drives to the en-US supermarket and because of en-US that, those SUVs became all en-US the more comfortable. en-US I remember the first time I en-US saw a big Lincoln Navigator en-US and a Cadillac Escalade, I en-US knew then those little Illinois en-US Jeeps had come full circle. en-US Like many of you, I am now en-US on my fourth SUV and I love en-US it. This year as I traveled in the en-US company of all the regular en-US Jeeps in the crowd, attending en-US Jeep Beach, I had to smile at en-US the thought of all us more en-US comfortable Jeep drivers en-US rolling alongside in our own en-US more plush version of a sport en-US utility vehicle. en-US en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. They en-US need a balanced approach. en-US School Board Chairman en-US Linda Cuthbert said Volusias en-US suspension rate is too high. en-US It is extremely important en-US that we look at . what causes en-US their problems, Ms. Cuthbert en-US said. They dont try to find en-US out why a child is acting out as en-US they might be. She now has a en-US record and all she needed was en-US some help. Something must be en-US done. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill A-7 Touch. Taste. Sight. Smell. Sound. All important. The last one, sound, is what Florida State Hearing Aids specializes in.Owner Julie Pruitt opened Florida State Hearing Aids Inc. in 2004 in order to bring a more affordable and wider variety of hearing aids to my clientele, she said. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. It is insulting to todays consumer. FREE or discounted hearing aids for GEHA, APWU, Federal employees, Empire Plan, Epic and local insurances. We also Veterans. 1808 W. en-USA-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USThere are a lot of thrift and en-US dollar stores throughout Voluen-US-en-US sia County and all have unique en-US selling points. en-US But at Everything a Dollar en-US Thrift Store in Holly Hill, literen-US -en-US ally everything is a dollar, en-US including new items, such as en-US cell phone cases that sell in en-US regular stores for $20 or more. en-US The inventory includes a liten-US -en-US tle bit of everything with all en-US items clean and in working en-US order. You can buy a printer, en-US computer, vacuum cleaner, en-US painting, bicycle, clothes, en-US music CD or cooking utensils, en-US all for one dollar. Baby clothes en-US sell four for a dollar. en-US The owners are Steven and en-US Lori Pruitt. Mr. Pruitt grew up en-US in Holly Hill where he is the en-US music director at Faith Baptist en-US Church, and where his father en-US has been pastor for 38 years. en-US Prior to owning the store, he en-US worked at Daytona State Colen-US-en-US lege for 10 years. Side en-US jobs, such as in carpentry, for en-US which he also has skills, kept en-US some money coming in while en-US he figured it out.en-US I jumped out and left it in en-US Gods hands he said. She said why dont en-US we have an everything is a dolen-US -en-US lar store all the time? I have en-US always had it in my heart to en-US help people out. This was the en-US idea and we prayed and prayed en-US and looked at locations. It was en-US a leap of faith. I was praying en-US God would lead us to a place. en-US God led us right to the spot. I en-US was parked next door calling en-US someone else, saw the sign and en-US then called.en-US Upon calling the number, en-US the landlord was actually en-US advertising the property for en-US sale, not the store, but one en-US thing led to another and they en-US not only got the store but storen-US -en-US age space.en-US Ms. Pruitt said, We just had en-US the idea. Of course, en-US this has created a lot of en-US confusion for investors. en-US The BIG distinction comes en-US when a planner uses a en-US credential after his/her name. en-US There are a variety of financial en-US designations. Some are harder en-US to obtain than others. For en-US example, the Certified en-US Financial Planner certification en-US is often recognized as a en-US top-level financial planning en-US credential. Just 70,000 or so en-US professionals hold it nationalen-US -en-US ly. It requires a tremendous en-US amount of studying, a long en-US and rigorous final exam, and en-US continuing education. I know, en-US because we have four CFP en-US practitioners in my office. en-US Other widely-respected en-US financial planning designaen-US -en-US tions include the Personal en-US Financial Specialist and the en-US Chartered Financial Consulen-US -en-US tant. Of course, there are en-US caveats: en-US 1. These are not the only en-US financial credentials. You can en-US learn more about financial en-US credentials at investors/professional-desigen-US-en-US nations.en-US 2. Working with a planner en-US who has credentials doesnt en-US guarantee a good experience en-US or success; youll need to en-US screen and interview them. en-US Go to if youd like to en-US find a CFP professional in en-US your area. en-US 3. Some very knowledgeable en-US and capable advisers never en-US obtain professional credenen-US -en-US tials. They should not be en-US dismissed out of hand. It is en-US important, therefore, to en-US consider other factors when en-US selecting advisers, such as, en-US where they work, their en-US experience, and whether en-US theyve had regulatory en-US problems or customer en-US complaints. For complaints, en-US visit for en-US securities brokers and reportspubs/investor-publicaen-US-en-US tions/investor-brokershtm.en-US html for investment advisers. en-US If you are considering a new en-US financial relationship, you are en-US not alone. It happens freen-US -en-US quently. Investors change en-US advisers for a variety of en-US reasons, including when they en-US have a loss of confidence in en-US the adviser, a loss of money, a en-US change in geographic location en-US or a change in their financial en-US needs. A new relationship en-US might also be considered en-US when the adviser you work en-US with changes geographic en-US location or employer affiliaen-US -en-US tion, retires or dies.en-US Before hiring a new adviser, en-US ask around, do some research en-US and think about what you are en-US looking for from an adviser. en-US Do you want most of your en-US services under one roof or en-US do you want to work with en-US multiple advisers? Most en-US importantly, take the time to en-US interview a few advisers before en-US making a decision.en-US If someone tells you that en-US they are a financial planner, en-US you can say, Oh, thats great! en-US Which credentials do you en-US hold? Then, go look them up!en-US David D. Except at en-US my house where my wife en-US would rather have me cook for en-US her. en-US I dont blame her. I can cook en-US anything she wants anyway en-US she likes it. We really have a en-US great relationship. I do all the en-US cooking and food shopping. en-US She has a full time job but en-US takes care of all the painting, en-US plumbing, household financen-US -en-US es, children, doctor appointen-US -en-US ments, car repairs and trip en-US organizing.en-US Most of all she is a very nice en-US person with a kind and giving en-US heart. We really enjoy each en-US others company and it doesnt en-US matter what we do as long as en-US its together. Does all this en-US sound familiar? en-US Yes, Moms are special. Their en-US intense love for family is en-US legendary, but their ability to en-US nurture goes beyond words. en-US From a scratched knee to a en-US broken heart, a word from en-US mom seems to heal all. en-US So what can we do on en-US Mothers Day to honor her? en-US Flowers, candy and dinner en-US its not enough. Nothing is en-US enough! We can start by en-US honoring her every day. en-US Maybe make breakfast for her en-US on a Saturday morning, say en-US thank you when she does the en-US laundry or tell her how nice en-US the meal was she just cooked. en-US Stop taking the everyday en-US things she does for granted en-US and let her know how much en-US you appreciate it. You will be en-US surprised how much Mom en-US will love it. en-US On Mothers Day, do en-US something personal like en-US giving her a handwritten note, en-US a scrapbook of family photos, en-US or a special dinner with wine en-US and do it yourself from the en-US heart. That will be something en-US she will remember forever. So, en-US what should you cook? I will en-US give you a couple good ideas. en-US You decide.en-USSteak Au Poiveen-USIngredients en-US 2 tenderlen-USoin steaks, 6 to 8 en-US ounces each and no more en-US than 1 1/2 inches thick en-US Kosher salt en-US 1 tablespoon whole en-US peppercorns en-US 1 tablespoon unsalted en-US butteren-US 1 teaspoon olive oil en-US 1 teaspoon prepared en-US mustarden-US 1/3 cup beef stock en-US 1/3 cup brandy or bourbonen-US 1 cup heavy cream en-US en-US Directions en-US Remove the steaks from the en-US refrigerator for at least 30 en-US minutes and up to 1 hour en-US prior to cooking. The previous day I en-US had caught a nice limit of en-US spotted sea trout and released en-US at least eight more. With the en-US trout on fire, I had to return.en-US Once more I found the fish en-US were hungry and, before 8 en-US a.m., I had caught a limit of en-US four, including one over 20 en-US inches. Whenever I get into a en-US situation where the fish are en-US biting and I must practice en-US catch and release, I like to try en-US out new lures. If you know the en-US fish are hungry and ready to en-US hit, it is a perfect time to find en-US out just how well some little en-US used lures will work. en-US With that in mind, I retired en-US my chartreuse shrimp tail jig en-US for the day and went to some en-US of the MirrOdine plugs that en-US had been given to me by the en-US good folks at the MirrOlure en-US Co. In this instance, those en-US flashy little suspending lures en-US found no success no matter en-US which color I tried. I had en-US caught fish with them on en-US different days, but here the en-US trout were feeding on shrimp.en-US Next, I tried the peppermint en-US crunch tail from Grandslam en-US Baits in Edgewater. That bait en-US brought some bites, but the en-US fish were only tasting it and en-US were not hitting with any en-US enthusiasm. My next try was en-US the Grandslam lite beer soft en-US shrimp tail and that too failed. en-US The all white tail was no en-US better, but then I put on the en-US hot apple cider pink tail with en-US silver fleck and the trout ate it en-US just as they had the charen-US -en-US treuse. en-US I was having fun with that en-US until the unthinkable hapen-US -en-US pened. I had a hit right at the en-US Green Peanut that almost en-US ripped the rod from my hand. en-US The fish was at a right angle en-US to the boat and nearly pulled en-US me over before I could get en-US straightened out. Oh mama! en-US What was so strong? en-US The first run was a long one en-US and when I looked at my reel, en-US I could see only a few more en-US turns of line left. It was make en-US or break time. I pulled back en-US hard attempting to turn the en-US monster with my little en-US 10-pound test line. It yielded en-USsome, but not much. In the en-US inshore, the only thing I have en-US ever been hooked to with that en-US much power was the 40-inch en-US red drum the guys from en-US Wham Bam Charters had put en-US me on a while back, so I en-US assumed my quarry to be that.en-US The fish was still way off en-US from the kayak and I couldnt en-US get a look at it until it made a en-US flip and the bright yellow en-US forked tail of a jack came out en-US of the water. What a jack! en-US After another 15 minutes of en-US arm cramping battle, I was en-US able to put the fish into my en-US small landing net. Actually en-US only the jacks head would go en-US into the net. en-US With the four trout already en-US on board I had no room for en-US the fish, but I was not about to en-US release it after all the trouble I en-US had just gone through to catch en-US it. I had a one inch bow line en-US on the kayak, so I tied it off en-US and left it in the water.
