en-USSunRail may be giving en-US Volusia County a bad rideen-USVolusia County Commissioners will attend en en-US force the upcoming SunRail Commission meeting.en-US This is political, and its time for some political en-US posturing, said Deb Denys, council vice chair. I en-US think if we all show up to a SunRail Commission en-US when our representative (Commissioner Bill) Paten-US-en-US terson is there fighting the good fight for Volusia en-US County its time to go on record. We could turn en-US on live Facebook audio (to keep the meeting puben-US-en-US lic).en-US The 2021 deadline for the county to take over en-US maintenance costs on the 12 miles of track from en-US DeBary to DeLand, which is currently the end of the en-US line despite promises for a station in DeLand and en-US expansion into more of Volusia County, is en-US approaching without any assurances the en-US expansion will happen. Also, estimated costs en-US are increasing to nearly five times more than en-US than what Volusia County agreed to shoulen-US-en-US der. en-US I keep getting this verbal reassurance en-US theres no way in the world that Volusia en-US County would suffer in any way in 2021, and I keep en-US reminding them I want that in writing, but of course en-US that didnt happen, Mr. Patterson said. What were en-US trying to do is just too make sure we arent going to en-US pay anything more than what we agreed to when we en-US got into this. Its just really frustrating, going on with en-US them. It leads us to wonder what were going to do en-US next here.en-US Despite reassurances, the numbers arent adding en-US up; en-US rather, they keep en-US piling up.en-US I think theres numbers that are coming out that en-US are troubling. We need to start probably doing some en-US public record requests to get some numbers, because en-US its not adding up, Mr. Patterson said. It is interesten-US-en-US ing that their attitude towards us is that we are the en-USThe sound of hammering en-US was the sound of healing en-US when TAPS conducted a en-US mens retreat in Daytona en-US Beach April 11-15.en-US Thirty men attended the en-US (Tragedy Assistance Program en-US for Survivors) retreat, which en-US provided an opportunity for en-US male survivors of military en-US loss to get to know one en-US another and create a fellowen-US -en-US ship, helping them stay conen-US -en-US nected with other men who en-US understand what they are en-US going through.en-US At the retreat, men formed en-US two groups. After breakfast en-US at the Fairfield Inn in Daytoen-US -en-US na Beach, one group went to en-US work on a Habitat for en-US Humanity of Greater Volusia en-US County house in Port en-US Orange. The other group en-US went fishing in Daytona en-US Beach Shores.en-US Reversing their activities en-US the next day, the fishermen en-US worked on the Habitat for en-US Humanity house, and the en-US workers went fishing. The en-US men also took time to tour en-US Daytona International en-US Speedway, to socialize, to en-US bond and to heal.en-US Part of the reason for parten-US -en-US nering with Habitat for en-US Humanity is because creating en-US is healing. It turns loss into a en-US legacy.en-US After a loss, often individen-US -en-US uals do miraculous things in en-US their lives, said Gabriel Rao. en-US The Habitat for Humanity en-US project in Daytona helped en-US turn loss into a legacy for en-US these men.en-US Mr. Rao, who is manager en-US of community engagement en-US for TAPS and coordinator of en-USRetreat provides en-US healing from loss en-US of loved ones en-USMOAS plans en-US Space Dayen-USThe Museum of Arts & en-US Sciences in Daytona Beach en-US invites all resident earthlings en-US to visit from 11 a.m. to 5:30 en-US p.m. Saturday, April 28 to en-US experience the mysteries and en-US beauty of outer space.en-US The fourth annual MOAS en-US Space Day celebrates all en-US things space in an interactive en-US environment for the whole en-US family.en-US You will learn about the en-US science, exploration and en-US beauty of space through en-US exciting lectures, shows in en-US our main planetarium and en-US portable planetarium, and en-US hands-on activities, a MOAS en-US news release states. There en-US will be displays from ERAUs en-US ERFSEDS Rocket Club, en-US Amateur Astronomy Club, en-US and Astronomy Professors en-US from the Physical Sciences en-US Department throughout the en-US museum.en-US Seth Mayo, MOAS curator en-US of astronomy, runs the planeen-US-en-US tarium. en-US It is truly a community en-US event because we invite en-US speakers from around the en-US area that have expertise in en-US space, such as Embry-Riden-US -en-US dle, Mr. Mayo said. Differen-US -en-US ent organizations come from en-US there (such as) their student en-US groups, their clubs. We have en-US a professor this time that is en-US going to speak about asteren-US -en-US oids, Dr. Ashley Kehoe. en-US Brendan Byrne who is the en-US space reporter for 90.7 en-US WMFE is going to talk as en-US well. Mr. Byrne will be en-US talking about Poop, Pee and en-US Puke: Dealing with the Gross en-US Stuff When Exploring Space.en-US Mr. Mayo stated it is a nice en-US community event to see and en-US celebrate space in many difen-US-en-US ferent ways where organizaen-US -en-US tions and experts in the space en-US and astronomy field come en-US together to share their pasen-US-en-US sion with the public, for peoen-US -en-US ple of all ages. en-US Space does affect us, he en-US said. We live on a planet that en-US is circling the sun in our en-US solar system and you can see en-US the night sky from earth. en-US There are rockets launching en-US and spacecraft going up all en-US the time and they affect us in en-US different ways. Some of them en-US are studying earth, some of en-US them are studying things en-US deep in space that can help en-US us better understand earth en-US and where we come from.en-US Mr. Mayo stated space en-US should be celebrated not only en-US for helping with fundamenen-US -en-US tal scientific questions, but en-US also that space exploration en-US has created much of the techen-US -en-US nology we use on a daily en-US basis. en-US Everyone has a connecen-US-en-US tion to (space) more than en-US they think they do, he said. en-US The natural phenomena en-US going on around us or the en-US technology in everyday life. en-US37 group en-US fills the en-US gaps en-US in livesen-USIts the unforeseen events en-US that Foundation 37 helps peoen-US-en-US ple overcome.en-US The community-based, volen-US-en-US unteer organization is comen-US-en-US mitted to significantly impacten-US -en-US ing peoples lives in Volusia en-US County.en-US Co-founders Maria Mills-en-US Benat and Tony Tucci recogen-US -en-US nized the need to help people en-US ease the stress caused by en-US unforeseen circumstances. en-US The website states that while en-US most organizations help comen-US -en-US munities on a much larger en-US scale, we have decided the en-US missing piece of the puzzleis en-US helpingone person at a time.en-US Ms. Mills-Benat, president en-US of Foundation 37, named it en-US because she liked the idea of en-US giving people a solid foundaen-US-en-US tion. He held it in. en-US Then he ended up going off en-US base at Fort Drum in New en-US York, to his favorite fishing en-US spot, where he took his own en-US life.en-US Another man at the retreat, en-US Kevin Graves, put down his en-US hammer and came over to tell en-US his story. His son, Specialist en-US Joseph Graves, was killed in en-US Iraq July 25, 2006.en-US For me, its extremely en-US important to find a healthy en-US path for grieving, and TAPS en-US provides that opportunity for en-US me, he said. Especially Christmas. en-US But I think he would want me en-US to be here with the fathers of en-US the kids that he could not en-US save.en-US Doug Windley is an Army en-US Chaplain. He is part of TAPS en-US because, he said, My loss is en-US the soldiers. I have the privien-US -en-US lege to officiate at funerals and en-US weddings. This is a chance to en-US give back and invest in the en-US lives of others.en-US Grief can be so internal. en-US Habitat for Humanity allows en-US us to begin giving back, he en-US continued. Grief is different en-US for men. Our style of healing is en-US through working with our en-US hands, shoulder to shoulder en-US with other men. On en-US the way, we stopped for lunch en-US at Alligator Joes. en-US That is an old-time Florida en-US fish-camp-type bar and grill en-US that sits on the shore of Lake en-US Weir just a bit from where the en-US feds shot up Ma Barkers gang en-US in 1935. The place was as en-US funky as the name implies, the en-US food was great and our group en-US of around 30 lingered there en-US longer than we had intended.en-US Once at Big Daddys, we en-US were met by the man himself en-US and ushered into the dragen-US racing area. Club President en-US Roland Via talked with Don en-US about the time he spent with en-US us on the beach for the 2003 en-US racing centennial. Mr. Garlits en-US was as cordial as ever, and as I en-US gushed over him, he didnt en-US seem to mind. en-US When I mentioned the 1904 en-US Peerless he rode on Ormond en-US Beach was a Barney Oldfield en-US car, Don told me Oldfield was en-US his hero. (That prompted me en-US to tell him he was mine.) As en-US always, Don seemed to enjoy en-US talking about the tricks that en-US make racing engines go faster. en-US Our group gathered around en-US the master and hung on his en-US every word.en-US My favorite part of the tour en-US was seeing so many of the en-US dragsters driven by the top en-US performers when I was a en-US young man. Cars that en-US belonged to Connie Kalitta, en-US Cris Karamisenes, Don en-US Prudhomme, TV Tommy Ivo en-US and Cha Cha Muldowney en-US were there along with so many en-US more. Just being close to the en-US dragsters I saw run in my en-US youth made me want to get en-US behind the wheel again.en-US Of course, the Drag Racing en-US Museum is filled with the en-US machines that made Don en-US famous. On display were some en-US of his earliest Swamp Rat en-US dragsters and many of the en-US experimental machines he en-US produced. We saw the famous en-US Mad Dog winged car of Art en-US Malone and visited a replica of en-US Smokey Yunicks engine shop en-US (complete with a statue of en-US Smokey.) en-US The entire facility is en-US accented by beautifully en-US restored engines that sit under en-US glass. One wall has seemingly en-US every type of racing flathead en-US carburetor and head setup en-US ever made. en-US At the Antique Car Museen-US -en-US um we all found our favorites. en-US Big Daddys collection of en-US restored 1930s Fords has to be en-US one of the worlds best. I en-US enjoyed seeing the 1904 en-US Brush, a car that was in the en-US early Chrysler family tree. The en-US museum has everything from en-US a Crosley Hotshot to a en-US gorgeous 1934 Cadillac, and en-US all are perfectly restored. en-US There truly is something there en-US for everyone. en-US President Via announced en-US Don has been selected as the en-US 2019 recipient of the prestien-US -en-US gious Tim Sullivan award en-US given annually by MRHA. He en-US truly seemed honored and en-US promised to be with us for the en-US presentation at The Back To en-US The Roots Celebration at en-US Main Street Station next en-US February. en-US Folks, our day with drag en-US racing king Don Garlits was en-US one to remember. He has built en-US a wonderful facility to honor en-US the sport he loves so much. It en-US sits right off of I-75, just south en-US of Ocala, and is well worth the en-US time for any lover of speed or en-US automobiles. Actually, there is en-US so much to see, it is difficult to en-US get to it all in one day. Do en-US yourself a favor and stop in.en-US While we were there, we en-US had fun watching the tourists en-US who had pulled off the en-US interstate for a quick look, en-US never expecting to see Mr. en-US Garlits himself. Thousands of new jobs would be available for inspectors en-US of cars and for inspector stations. en-US We used to have inspections. Wouldnt it be nice if we knew en-US the other drivers who share the road with us have automobile en-US insurance. Auto inspection stations would cut down on accien-US-en-US dents and prevent deaths. Read this article Gov. Scott. en-USThanks for Good Samaritansen-USMany thanks to the two male Good Samaritans who literally en-US pulled the door off its hinges to get my husband out of the car en-US after his accident due to a medical emergency on Monday, April en-US 16, at 13th and Atlantic avenues. en-US I want to thank you both personally. With all of the negativity en-US in the press, people like you restore our faith in humanity. My en-US gratitude cannot be adequately expressed. en-US For ethical reasons re: Facebooks data sharing behavior, I en-US deleted my account. However, I was dismayed to hear from en-US friends of ill-informed posts about the accident, some from peoen-US -en-US ple I knew. Such posts added to the pain of an already traumatic en-US situation. I hope people will consider that knee-jerk comments en-US they make on social media may be about their friends and add en-US to the trauma of horrible situations. en-US Again, in my mind those two young men are as great heroes as en-US are the fireman who pulled the woman out of the window and en-US rendered aid on Southwest Airline. Im sorry they dont get the en-US same national acclaim.en-USStill no strawberriesen-US en-USI would like to add my two cents about the Strawberry (less) en-US Festival in DeLand a couple of weeks ago.en-US We (my family, including a toddler) walked there from the en-US Plant Fair, which was pretty far, and were met by a gentleman en-US who said we had to pay $27 and could not enter that way anyen-US -en-US way, but had to go all the way around to the opposite side.en-US The indoor portion had not one free thing and was just like an en-US outdoor farmers market with hot sauce, jams and jellies, and en-US homemade items. There was a childrens play area with inflaten-US -en-US able toys and little tents.en-US The food with strawberry-themed items were expensive. The en-US ATM didnt work.en-US Outside there were overpriced food truck items and face en-US painting at $5 each. The soft serve ice cream was pre-made and en-US frozen solid.en-US Finally, and this is what sent us directly out no strawberen-US -en-US ries! Thats right, a strawberry festival with no fresh strawberries en-US at all!en-US When contacted, the company that ran the festival said there en-US were none because the strawberry season was shortened because en-US the weather had been too warm. Which meant, of course, there en-US were no strawberries at the festival in Barberville the following en-US week either. But the folks up there had yet to find that out. Billen-US -en-US boards on State Road 44 and U.S. 92 advertised these events en-US heavily so I feel like we were suckered. en-USThanks to hard-working nursesen-USI was in Halifax Hospital two weeks about on the bottom floor, en-US F section.en-US I want to give a special special shout-out to the nurses on the en-US floor, Kristi, Christina, Brandy, Mary Anne and Kemper. Retail en-US jobs were up 600, which is en-US surprising given the number en-US of store closings as brick and en-US mortar stores struggle to en-US compete with Internet sales.en-US But where the report goes en-US off the rails is in listing en-US business and professional en-US services jobs down 1,500 and en-US government jobs down 900. en-US Thats a lot of jobs to disapen-US -en-US pear over the past 12 months en-US and I thought maybe I missed en-US some big layoffs.en-US So, I went to the folks who en-US deal with the unemployed the en-US most, Career Source of en-US Volusia/Flagler. en-US We have not seen any en-US major layoffs that would en-US account for such a downward en-US spike in jobs, Christine en-US Sikora, a Career Source vice en-US president wrote in an email. en-US With lower unemployment en-US numbers and less people en-US looking for work, many en-US businesses have chosen ways en-US to become more efficient en-US without hiring new workers. en-US This would not be uncommon en-US in this type of labor market.en-US But, she noted, In the last en-US month, we saw 1,347 en-US job-seekers, which is the en-US lowest number we have had en-US register with us in over 10 en-US years. en-US Not exactly a ringing en-US endorsement of the non-ag en-US jobs report. The report is en-US supposed to be based on a en-US survey of employers and en-US applications for unemployen-US -en-US ment compensation, but en-US apparently something in that en-US got way out of whack.en-US On the other hand, the en-US unemployment report, based en-US on a survey of households and en-US the unemployment apps, is en-US more of what youd expect. en-US The number of unemployed en-US workers went down (below en-US 10,000 in Volusia for the first en-US time in a while) and the en-US unemployment rate was at 3.9 en-US percent. The same as in en-US February, but down from 4.3 en-US percent in March 2017.en-US So, I wont be using the en-US non-ag report for my column en-US any more, which is just as en-US well, since it includes Volusia en-US and Flagler, and I dont really en-US keep up with whats going on en-USwith our neighbors to the en-US north. en-US ***en-US After taking a few days off en-US for my sons wedding, Im a en-US little behind on the individual en-US deals going on around the en-US county, but Ill include as en-US much as I can. en-US An Orlando couple bought en-US the Night Swan B&B and en-US adjacent properties in New en-US Smyrna Beach for $1.7 en-US million. I dont need the en-US money. Is it better to sell it, give en-US it to my kids now, or leave it to en-US them when I die?en-USThis excellent question was en-US posed to me by Jack between en-US dumbbell curls at the gym. It en-US provides a great example of en-US how taxes and investing can en-US be interrelated. The correct en-US answer will depend on each en-US persons individual situation, en-US but here are some options for en-US Jack to consider:en-US No. 1 Sell it. There would en-US be a $40 per share capital gain. en-US I dont know the specifics of en-US the stock transaction, but lets en-US assume Jack purchased 1,000 en-US shares, at $10 a share, five en-US years ago. That would mean a en-US $40,000 long-term capital gain en-US to report on the sale. en-US The amount of tax due en-US would depend on a variety of en-US factors, including: Jacks other en-US income, his marital status, and en-US whether he has any capital en-US losses to offset the gain. For en-US example, if Jack is married, en-US has no losses to offset the gain, en-US and has at least $77,201 of en-US taxable income for 2018, hed en-US owe 15 percent tax ($6,000) en-US on the $40,000 of capital gain. en-US No. 2 Gift it. Now, if you en-US give an appreciated asset to en-US someone else during your en-US lifetime, the recipient will use en-US your basis (what you paid for en-US it) when it comes time to en-US figure what they owe in en-US income taxes (like in option en-US No. 1). So, if Jack gives the en-US stock to his son, who later sells en-US it for $100 a share, the son will en-US have a $90 capital gain per en-US share. Hed still use the initial en-US purchase price of $10 per en-US share when he figures his gain en-US and how much tax he owes.en-US No. 3 Leave it. An en-US interesting wrinkle in the en-US U.S. tax code is that, if you die en-US owning an asset (like stock, en-US per this example), the basis en-US gets stepped-up to the value en-US of the stock on the date of en-US your death, not what you paid en-US for it. So, if Jack kept the en-US stock, died, left it to his son, en-US and then the son sold it, the en-US son would only pay tax on the en-US gain above what the stock was en-US worth on the day Jack died. In en-US effect, both Jack and his son en-US escape the capital gains tax.en-US Please note federal income en-US taxes and federal gift and en-US estate taxes are two separate en-US taxes. Some people pay one or en-US the other or both. The last one, sound, is what Florida State Hearing Aids specializes in.Owner Julie Pruitt opened Florida State Hearing Aids Inc. in 2004 in order to bring a more affordable and wider variety of hearing aids to my clientele, she said. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. It is insulting to todays consumer. FREE or discounted hearing aids for GEHA, APWU, Federal employees, Empire Plan, Epic and local insurances. We also Veterans. Catch of the Week en-USOen-USne of the great things en-US about fishing is that en-US each trip is different. en-USOn a recent morning I went en-US north to launch my kayak west en-US of High Bridge just as I have en-US told you about so many times en-US before. The morning began a en-US bit cool, but as soon as the sun en-US came up over Coquina Island, en-US the temperature began to rise.en-US Once I had the Green en-US Peanut about a mile back into en-US the mud flats, I began to cast en-US my famous chartreuse jig en-US mounted on a 1.8 oz, lead en-US head painted white. My rod en-US was a seven-foot medium en-US action Shakespeare and the en-US reel a number 25 Quantum. en-US That reel is produced by the en-US Zebco Co., noted for their en-US smooth drag system. en-US The tide was going out, but en-US at the end of the cycle and en-US barely moving. The kayak en-US began to drift eastward, but en-US ever so slowly. Working my en-US favorite trout hole produced en-US nothing and, after a half hour, en-US I sat pondering my next move. en-US I had to decide whether to en-US move along or stay until the en-US incoming tide began to get up en-US to speed. en-US Justen-US then Ien-US spotted someen-US -en-US thing in my peripheral vision en-US off to the right. It was a mullet en-US hurtling toward my head. Not en-US a finger mullet, but a fat roe en-US mullet of nearly two pounds. I en-US ducked and twisted hard left en-US as the fish hit my shoulder en-US head first, slapping my ear en-US with its tail. en-US Dodging a mullet in my en-US little kayak was not the thing en-US to do. I found that out quickly en-US as I fell out of the boat, en-US turning it over. en-US The water was en-US about eight feet deep and en-US chilly. Luckily the stream was en-US narrow and with a couple en-US strokes I was able to reach en-US shore, my rod and reel still in en-US hand. en-US With no current in the en-US water, my kayak stayed put en-US and I was able to right it and en-US pull it ashore. My landing net en-US and cushion floated and my en-US tackle pouch was around my en-US waist, so nothing was lost en-US except my dignity. en-US I had been clocked by a big en-US mullet and was cold and wet. en-US Nothing left to do but go en-US home. As I paddled back to en-US my truck, I thought about how en-US many times I had a mullet en-US jump into the side of my boats en-US or even inside, but never had I en-US taken a hit from one. Why do en-US mullet insist on jumping all en-US the time? en-US I thought about the video en-US we have all seen of the leaping en-US carp in the fresh water hitting en-US people and jumping into en-US boats. If you are fishing a en-US place like that, you might en-US expect it, but here I did not.en-US As I have often mentioned en-US my kayak is unstable and in en-US order to fish it, I must en-US concentrate on keeping myself en-US centered. The reason I picked en-US such a small craft is I often en-US must carry the kayak a long en-US way to reach the water as I fish en-US some of the more out of the en-US way places. The Peanut is en-US perfect for that, weighing only en-US 35 pounds. en-US One thing is for sure when I en-US retell this story to some of my en-US fishing buddies, I will not let en-US on that I en-US was hit by a mullet. en-US No, that fish will have to turn en-US into a big fierce game fish bent en-US on destruction. Perhaps a en-US 100-pound tarpon or maybe a en-US big snook. (My fishing en-US buddies can all read, but most en-US prefer not to.) Anyway, I will en-US never again admit to being en-US ejected from my boat by a en-US lowly mullet.en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia Coen-US unty for en-US more than 40 years. en-USB-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USTen-UShe Cambridge Dictionary en-US defines this statement as, en-US too many people en-US involved in trying to do the en-US same thing, the final result will en-US not be good. en-USSorry Cambridge, not being en-US a chef, you got it all wrong. In en-US the professional kitchen, chefs en-US work together as a team to en-US produce great meals. Let me en-US enlighten you on the real en-US problem and where it origien-US -en-US nated. en-US It is in my home kitchen en-US and I am sure my home is not en-US the only one where this en-US problem exits. It has nothing en-US to do with cooking soups or en-US anything. It has to do with the en-US kitchen organizational set up. en-US Thats right, who decides how en-US the kitchen is set up is the en-US problem. en-US In my home, too many en-US cooks is fine except they en-US reorganize the kitchen every en-US day. Two weeks ago my wife en-US decided to reorganize the en-US kitchen to help me. She went en-US out and bought open shelving en-US so you could see everything en-US stored just by looking around. en-US She organized all the cooking en-US pots and pans under the open en-US work tables. It was a spectacuen-US -en-US lar job. People visiting come en-US into the kitchen and comment en-US how great the setup is. en-US I agree. I really love what en-US she did. The only problem is en-US she organized it and knows en-US where everything is, I dont. A en-US location chart would have en-US been nice. Each day I find en-US new surprises where things en-US are stored. en-US All kidding aside, I am so en-US fortunate she redid the en-US kitchen and her main purpose en-US was to make it easier for me to en-US cook in, not to change wall en-US paper or hang knick-knacks en-US on the wall. It was designed to en-US be functional and a place to en-US create great meals. en-US Wait a minute! Sometimes en-US I forget just how smart my en-US wife really is. Thats OK, I love en-US cooking for her and once I en-US find everything it should be en-US easier.en-USFeta Cheese Mousse en-US12 servingsen-US Ingredientsen-US 4 ounces heavy creamen-US 6 ounces feta cheeseen-US 2 ounces olive oilen-US 2 teaspoons fresh lemon en-US juiceen-US 2 teaspoons sun dried en-US tomatoes in olive oilen-US Salt and pepper to tasteen-US Directionsen-US Place all ingredients in the en-US blender.
