en-USVote for your favorite en-US park to get $20,000en-USVolusia County citizens have until the end of April en-US to cast votes for their respective city to receive a en-US $20,000 grant to improve a local park.en-US For the fourth year, the National Recreation and en-US Park Association and The Walt Disney Co. have en-US teamed up to celebrate Earth Month by helping to en-US fund local park improvement projects in 16 U.S. citen-US-en-US ies, with $320,000 to be distributed nationwide. en-US During April, the public will have the opportunity en-US to vote for one of three projects in 15 select cities en-US from around the country already approved to en-US receive $20,000 in grant funding. Voters can also en-US nominate a city or town anywhere in the United en-US States to be entered for the chance to also receive a en-US $20,000 grant that will be used to support a en-US local park within that community. en-US Any Volusia County city or town is thus en-US eligible to win the wild card nomination, en-US which would guarantee $20,000 for park en-US improvements. en-US Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington is en-US hoping Ormond Beach wins the wild card en-US slot.en-US We are excited about it, Mayor Partington said. en-US You can enter once per day and hopefully well win en-US the $20,000 grant, which would be awesome to furen-US -en-US ther enhance our parks that we value so much in en-US Ormond Beach. They are a vital component of the en-US health and happiness of our citizens. en-US Our parks have always been a top priority, en-US whether it is the 120-acre Central Park, whether it is en-US the en-US Andy Romano en-US Beachfront Park, Rockefeller Gardens, or en-US our 140-acre airport sports complex, he said. en-US There are so many things we could do with 20,000 en-US additional dollars in enhancements. So, we are exciten-US -en-US ed and looking forward to participating and hopeen-USen-USVolusia County School en-US District officials are hoping en-US to meet with county and state en-US officials regarding school en-US safety, but they recognize the en-US problem of school violence is en-US a multifaceted issue.en-US Addressing fellow board en-US members during a special en-US workshop meeting March 27, en-US Board Member Dr. John Hill en-US said there are issues that en-US leave the county schools en-US more open to outside threats.en-US Ive been on a few camen-US -en-US puses lately and were not en-US even close to protecting our en-US students. I walked all around en-US a campus recently, and en-US nobody stopped me, nobody en-US asked who I was, he said. en-US The students werent in unien-US -en-US form, and along those lines, en-US the teachers you dont en-US know who they are. Theyre en-US under dressed most of the en-US time, and its not popular, but en-US its a safety issue as well.en-US With adults and students en-US dressed casually and not en-US readily-identifiable, the en-US schools become more vulen-US -en-US nerable, he added.en-US If you can walk on a camen-US-en-US pus and you dont know who en-US a student is or who a teacher en-US is or who an administrator is, en-US good luck -because anyone en-US could walk on, he said.en-US Enforcing dress codes and en-US campus attitude toward such en-US are a direct result of leaderen-US -en-US ship at the school, and prinen-US -en-US cipals need to be held to en-US strict standards by the board, en-US said Ida Wright, board memen-US -en-US ber. en-US The dress code I agree en-US with you. Once you violate en-US the policy, its the culture, en-US and I hold the principals en-US responsible for that campus en-US culture. If they cant fulfill en-US and keep a dress code, we en-USSchool district en-US seeking input en-US on safety en-USPaul Holub en-US discusses Ormond en-US Beach projectsen-USGranada Pointe and en-US Ormond Central are two conen-US -en-US struction projects by developen-US -en-US er Paul Holub of which en-US Ormond en-US Beach residents are en-US keenly aware.en-US Some of those residents en-US vehemently oppose them, and en-US others, including city comen-US -en-US mission and planning board en-US members, strongly support en-US them. en-US Mr. Holub went on record en-US recently to try to allay some en-US fears, while detailing where en-US work stands on each. en-US Granada Pointe remains en-US the most contentious of the en-US two, even spawning a citizen en-US group known as CANDO 2 en-US (Citizens and Neighbors Deden-US -en-US icated to Ormond). It was creen-US -en-US ated after land was cleared for en-US ten-US he project with former City en-US Commissioner Jeff Boyle as en-US one of its founders. Group en-US concerns include damage to en-US the environment, noise and en-US traffic. en-US The local developer (Mr. en-US Holub lived in Ormond Beach en-US since 1972) has the approval en-US he needs to go forward with en-US both projects. He has extenen-US -en-US sive commercial developen-US-en-US ments in Ormond Beach, en-US having built in the city for 32 en-US years. en-US I will personally do everyen-US -en-US thing I can to get the facts en-US out, he said. Even the land en-US that we donated to St. Johns in en-US the city was all zoned B9 en-US (commercial), a lot of people en-US dont know that. The dense en-US forested area contains no less en-US than 18 historic trees and en-US probably over 1,000 specimen en-US trees. So not only was the city en-US able to preserve land and trees en-US forever, they also removed 10 en-US acres of commercial B9 land en-US from the zoning maps of en-US which I easily and successfulen-US -en-US ly could have developed an en-US apartment project on this en-US land under current codes en-US (which) would have been a en-US huge success.en-US Mr. Holubs company did en-US ask for two uses by special en-US exception, one to allow a en-US Wawa on the property, which en-US was approved. If you are en-US going to have another gas staen-US -en-US tion/convenience store in the en-US area, why not have the absoen-US -en-US lute best, he said. The other en-US special exception also en-US approved is for a restaurant en-US with a drive-through. en-US People will say this gas staen-US -en-US tion will bring more traffic. en-US Thats not accurate. This staen-US -en-US tion will absorb traffic that is en-US already on Granada (pass-by en-US trips), he said. We could en-US have built 231,000 square feet en-US of buildings over all the paren-US -en-US cels. We agreed to reduce it to en-US 130,000. We reduced the en-US building area by 43 percent. en-US We reduced the height (75 en-US feet to 45 feet). It is hard to en-US explain all this at a city comen-US -en-US mission meeting.en-US We did take down the trees en-US because the site has to be en-US filled, Mr. Holub said. Out en-US of the 18, there were probably en-US six or seven that were healthy. en-US Now we are going to fill this en-US to grade and are putting in a en-US massive storm water system. en-US What people dont know is we en-US are going to reforest the entire en-USNever forgeten-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USVietnam veteran Joe Pizzimenti of Ormond Beach salutes as Kayon Jones en-US sings the National Anthem during the POW/MIA Flag Raising Ceremony at en-US Halifax Health Hospices Ormond Beach Care Center on Saturday, April 14. en-US Ms. Jones is the daughter of Devon Jones, the chaplain at the care center. en-US The event was sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America Daytona en-US Beach Chapter. en-USA-2 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USneed to get rid of them, its that en-US simple, Ms. Wright said. en-US Every high school has violaten-US-en-US ed this policy, every single one en-US of them, because theres no en-US repercussion for violating this en-US policy.en-US In addition, Dr. Hill cited en-US high taxes by other taxing en-US agencies make it more difficult en-US for the schools to get additionen-US -en-US al funding for resource offien-US-en-US cers, which are critical, he said. en-US And the legislators simply en-US wants to fix mental health by en-US throwing more money at those en-US and other programs he en-US believes are parental responsien-US-en-US bilities. en-US We are feeding students, we en-US are nursing students, we are en-US mental healthing students en-US we are taking over the role of en-US what parents should be doing. en-US And somehow we are saying en-US we need more and more and en-US more money for taxpayers at en-US the expense of giving the paren-US -en-US ents the OK that they dont en-US have to parent. To me, its disen-US -en-US gusting, he said.en-US Board Membr Carl Persis en-US agreed with the dress code and en-US open campus concerns, and en-US said he was eager to see results en-US from the restorative justice en-US study, which has students en-US serve suspensions in school en-US instead of allowing them to get en-US a free pass to stay home, often en-US unsupervised during working en-US hours.en-US I agree with a lot of what en-US Dr. Hill said. Our schools are en-US just open, and you can walk en-US on. I do the same thing, just en-US walk on, Mr. Persis said. And en-US the dress code, youd never en-US know we had a dress code. Im en-US not saying the kids look slopen-US-en-US py, but theres not uniformity en-US in any way.en-US Board members said they en-US plan to schedule meetings en-US with Volusia County Council en-US members and invite legislative en-US representatives to the forum. en-US No date is yet set.en-US greenbelt and put back in en-US almost 130, fourand five-en-US inch caliper trees, and over en-US 3,000 threen-US eand five-gallon en-US shrubs and over 2,000 en-US one-gallon ground cover in en-US this greenbelt. en-US Mr. Holub said wetland en-US impact for both projects was en-US minimal and was mitigated. en-US His group will be giving en-US $10,000 to the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society along with en-US eight parking spaces to use at en-US The Three Chimneys site. en-US Decorative lights and pavers en-US are also going to be put in.en-US Mr. Holub explained when en-US it comes to requesting waivers en-US from the city, developers are en-US required to provide two puben-US -en-US lic benefits per waiver. His en-US group requested five waivers en-US and provided 19 public beneen-US-en-US fits instead of the mandatory en-US 10. He further stated he has en-US put in much of his own en-US money, including putting in a en-US traffic light on the property at en-US his own expense.en-US Mr. Holub stated city staff en-US reviewed and approved the en-US waivers and his company en-US went above and beyond what en-US was required. He cited getting en-US permission to install a vinyl en-US coated 4-foot chain link fence en-US around the storm pond for en-US safety reasons and getting an en-US allowance for parking at the en-US future grocery store in places en-US other than the back of the en-US building, which is required en-US under the current (land en-US development code). en-US So, the word waiver en-US sounds broad, but when you en-US read each of the items you en-US will see how nominal they en-US are, he said.en-US Besides Wawa, two groen-US-en-US cery stores are being considen-US -en-US ered for the property, a bank en-US with a drive-through as well en-US as a restaurant with a drive-en-US through and a coffee type en-US place. en-US Ormond Central, the other en-US big project, appears to have en-US won some support from en-US neighbors. Mr. Holub said, en-US Every other use that is in en-US Granada Pointe is permitted en-US here, identical, except there en-USwill be no gas station (which en-US he took off the table based on en-US neighbors concerns).en-US He added a grocery store is en-US looking at the property along en-US with reen-US staurants. en-US As to traffic there he said, en-US Anybody that leaves the site en-US and goes down Old Kings en-US (Road) is because they live en-US there and that is the road they en-US should use to get home. They en-US should be allowed to return to en-US their neighborhood on Old en-US Kings. Predominant traffic en-US into this complex will be from en-US average trips that are already en-US on the street every day.en-US We did a lot of things here en-US with privacy walls and landen-US -en-US scaping, Mr. Holub said. We en-US always listen to the neighbors. en-US They have come up with good en-US suggestions. There are lots of en-US things we have heard from en-US them we try to implement.en-US He further stated semi-en-US trucks will not be coming in en-US frequently and the route will en-US be restricted. en-US Mr. Holub said people need en-US to understand the public benen-US -en-US efits and the long process en-US these projects take, which en-US include meetings with many en-US different groups. His hope is en-US that, like his other projects, en-US eventually people will shake en-US his hand being happy with the en-US finished product. en-US Wawa will start coming up en-US in 3-4 months. Ormond Cenen-US-en-US tral is still in negotiations en-US with potential tenants so no en-US construction, yet. Mr. en-USHolub en-US stated for both projects there en-US are different levels of oppoen-US -en-US sition and different levels of en-US support. Call Today for a FREE Estimate! The last one, sound, is what Florida State Hearing Aids specializes in.Owner Julie Pruitt opened Florida State Hearing Aids Inc. in 2004 in order to bring a more affordable and wider variety of hearing aids to my clientele, she said. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. It is insulting to todays consumer. FREE or discounted hearing aids for GEHA, APWU, Federal employees, Empire Plan, Epic and local insurances. We also Veterans. A en-USs the persistent march to en-US turn our beach into a en-US private one continues, I en-US am prompted to think back to en-US how all of this began. en-USBy the mid-1980s there had en-US been several attempts to close en-US portions of the beach by those en-US who had bought the dunes, en-US but without much success. It en-US wasnt until the issue of turtle en-US safety came to the forefront en-US that the anti-beach driving en-US crowd could get any support.en-US At that time, our entire en-US country was making a en-US concerted effort to save en-US animals from extinction. It en-US was as though the population en-US was just discovering nature, en-US and, as Americans will do, en-US they rushed into it headlong.en-US Locally, the new environen-US -en-US mentalists nearly fainted when en-US they found out our beloved en-US manatees had fallen in en-US numbers to the point of being en-US put on the endangered species en-US list. Of course, that turned out en-US to be the result of poor en-US methods of counting the sea en-US cows, and once that had been en-US improved, the numbers of en-US Florida manatees shot up. en-US The people who wanted to en-US close down our beach to en-US driving and other peoen-US -en-US ple-friendly things like en-US nighttime access also jumped en-US on the environmental banden-US -en-US wagon. Now they had the en-US turtles to head up their cause. en-US After all, who could argue en-US with trying to protect those en-US cute little baby turtles? Now en-US they could successfully en-US petition the state to begin en-US keeping people and cars off en-US the beach. en-US The problem with that is the en-US turtle hatchlings were, at that en-US time just as now, more en-US protected than at any other en-US time in history. Aside from en-US rare instances of a turtle being en-US killed by a car, it was the en-US influx of population in east en-US Volusia County that saved en-US them by the thousands. en-US Each year in late spring, big en-US sea turtles come ashore, dig a en-US hole and lay their eggs. Not en-US being the best of parents, the en-US mother turtles would leave as en-US soon as the eggs were en-US dropped. Throughout history, en-US the turtle nesting season was en-US looked upon as a chance for a en-US good meal by many wild en-US animals and a lot of people. en-US Our earliest residents, the en-US Native Americans of the en-US Timucuan tribe, would en-US conduct a celebration to mark en-US the occasion of the gathering en-US of the eggs. en-US Bears, raccoons, foxes and en-US other animals would head to en-US the beach to dig turtle eggs. en-US According to the great 1987 en-US book, Tales Of Old Florida, en-US early European settlers who en-US lived a bit inland would come en-US to the beach to set up camps en-US to stay for weeks and harvest en-US the turtle eggs. Indeed, the en-US turtle nesting season was seen en-US as a bonanza of protein for en-US animals and humans alike.en-US When I first came to live en-US here in the late s, there were en-US signs posted on the more en-US desolate sections of our beach en-US warning us to be on the en-US lookout for egg-hunting bears. en-US The black bears were great egg en-US hunters and did not take en-US kindly to being interrupted. en-US Residents who lived near the en-US beach would walk along with en-US a long stick to jab into the en-US sand hoping to find a turtle en-US nest, but the bears could sniff en-US them out with ease. en-US That caused many settlers to en-US follow them and try to chase en-US them away from their find. en-US Turtle eggs were a big part of en-US the diet for all. Once the eggs en-US hatched, scores of predatory en-US birds (and people) would en-US descend on the beach to eat en-US the baby turtles. Even the en-US alligators had caught on and en-US would come down to the en-US shore for an easy meal. en-US Of course, over time, due to en-US the increase in human en-US population, the animals were en-US displaced and became fewer en-US and fewer. Humans found en-US other things to eat and were en-US no longer interested in the en-US turtle eggs. Now the eggs and en-US baby turtles were safer than en-US they had ever been.en-US Naturally, when the en-US environmentalists decided the en-US turtles needed to be protected en-US from the cars and the people, en-US none of that was ever consid en-US-en-US ered. Turtles were just the en-US excuse they needed to support en-US their own agenda. Sadly, that en-US misguided agenda was bought en-US into by the politicians and en-US continues to gain steam until en-US this day as the greatest public en-US beach in Florida continues to en-US shrink.en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. Rather than en-US aggravated to the point of road rage by way of standstill traffic, en-US how much better to follow the laid-back live-and-let-live examen-US -en-US ple of no-nonsense pelicans. en-US Cooperating with one another despite the awkwardness of en-US heavy nine-foot wing spans, long yellow pointed beaks and large en-US throat pouches, they travel in friendly flocks stopping only long en-US enough to fish and/or painstakingly give birth to and tend to en-US their beloved offspring. Jeopardized constantly by poisons, polen-US-en-US lutants, and parasites, they patiently cope with all that they must en-US in order to make the very most of the beachside they possibly en-US can.en-USMake New Smyrna Beach safeen-USI am compelled to rant because I see the people of New Smyren-US -en-US na Beach arent as safe as they could be. en-US The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department is seriously underen-US -en-US manned. Each piece of apparatus, whether it is a fire pumper, fire en-US truck, heavy or light rescue vehicle, should have a minimum of en-US three firefighters on that piece of equipment. en-US Firefighters are our first responders. They are soldiers without en-US guns. They are ready to save your life or property at a moments en-US notice. City Hall does not allow them to meet the minimum en-US manning requirements. This causes a unit to go out of service en-US during rescue transport calls. The pumpers only ride with two en-US firefighters on them. en-US We cannot compromise public safety due to budget conen-US -en-US straints. This leaves areas of our city vulnerable and unsafe. Our en-US courageous firefighter/paramedics now have the ability to hanen-US -en-US dle most any emergency. They can even get to the hospital faster en-US with their own rescue transport vehicle. Let us help them to help en-US you by giving them all of the tools and manpower they require.en-US According to National Fire Protection Association standards, en-US there is a minimum crew size mandate. New Smyrna Beach does en-US not meet this standard. For the safety of the public and the safety en-US of our firefighters we must insist the city of New Smyrna Beach en-US stop shortchanging out lives, property, and health and welfare of en-US its firefighters. Our firefighters have our backs, we should have en-USBicycle awarden-USPhoto courtesy of Boys & Girls Clubs en-USEarlier this month, eight members of Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler Counties, ages 6-13, were en-US invited to attend an event in Daytona Beach, but were not told why. Theodores question en-US is summarized below:en-US Question: I am age 77, and en-US my wife is age 81. We have en-US $85,000 in savings bonds, en-US most of which have matured. en-US Should I cash these in and pay en-US the taxes or just leave them en-US alone?en-US First, for readers who are en-USunfamiliar with savings en-US bonds, they are securities en-US issued by the U.S. Treasury. en-US Some of the most commonly en-US held bonds are E Bonds, EE en-US Bonds and I Bonds.en-US Introduced in 1941, E en-US Bonds have stopped earning en-US interest as of 2010. They were en-US issued at 75 percent of their en-US face value, which means, if en-US you bought a $100 E Bond, en-US you only paid $75 at the time en-US of purchase. EE Bonds are en-US currently sold at their face en-US value and, as of May 2005, en-US earn a fixed rate of return. I en-US Bonds are issued at face value en-US and earn a combined rate, en-US made up of a fixed rate (at en-US purchase) and an inflation en-US rate based on the CPI-U. en-US Both EE Bonds and I Bonds en-US earn interest for up to 30 en-US years, at which point they en-US mature.en-US So, back to the question. en-US The answer is, Theodore, it en-US all depends. Do you need the en-US money or do you think you en-US may leave it as an inheritance en-US to your heir(s)? If you need en-US the money, the interest will be en-US taxable (i.e. federal income en-US taxes, but not state or local) en-US when you cash in the bonds.en-US Now, nothing requires you en-US to cash in all your bonds at en-US one time. You can certainly en-US spread out the process over a en-US few years (or more). If you en-US plan to leave the money to en-US your heir(s), you might want en-US to contemplate the tax en-US implications even more en-US carefully. Who will have the en-US lower tax rate when the bonds en-US are cashed in, you or your en-US heir(s)? To make sure the en-US most money is retained, the en-US person with the lower tax rate en-US should probably be the one to en-US cash in the bonds.en-US With up to 30 years to en-US accumulate interest, bonds en-US make a great gift for a en-US newborn baby or young child. en-US Some of the perks of bonds, en-US include: 1. They are a conseren-US -en-US vative investment; 2. They are en-US easy to purchase; and 3. You en-US dont pay tax on them until en-US you cash them in. Remember, en-US though, risk and reward en-US travel together. Because EE en-US and I Bonds are low-risk, their en-US interest rates are also low, en-US relative to other investment en-US choices. en-US My source for some of the en-US information here was savingsen-US -en-US The website offers en-US a plethora of interesting en-US information, and, if you own en-US savings bonds, there is even a en-US calculator to estimate their en-US worth. Thank you, Theoen-US -en-US dore for the question! en-US David D. en-USB-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USBen-USeing a chef can be like the en-US character from the TV en-US series Monk, who had en-US outstanding powers of observaen-US -en-US tion he called a blessing and a en-US curse.en-USBeing a chef, I have been en-US trained in the culinary arts, en-US which I take seriously. That en-US has been a blessing for me.en-US Hot food should be served en-US hot and cold food served cold en-US is an important part of that en-US training and that is where the en-US curse comes in. My family en-US does not understand that en-US simple action. en-US People everywhere that love en-US to cook will tell you they get en-US their satisfaction from en-US cooking and watching others en-US enjoy their labors. Unfortuen-US -en-US nately, in creating a great hot en-US meal and then serving it cold, en-US there is no satisfaction. That is en-US the curse for a chef a great en-US meal gone bad. en-US My wife came from a large en-US family and hot food probably en-US wasnt high on the list at en-US dinner, because just trying to en-US get everyone fed was the goal. en-US Serving food at the proper en-US temperature for a chef is a rule en-US that cannot be broken. It goes en-US against all of my training and en-US drives me totally bonkers. en-US Let me give you a few en-US examples. Its time to eat and I en-US announce dinner is ready, en-US then everyone disappears. en-US People are going to the en-US bathroom, going out to get the en-US mail, answering the phone. en-US ITS DINNER TIME!en-US So now I announce dinner 5 en-US minutes early to give everyone en-US a chance to prepare to eat. en-US When I make salad, which is en-US usually every day, I keep it in en-US the refrigerator just prior to en-US eating and not letting it sit on en-US the table for 10 minutes. I also en-US keep the salad dressing en-US refrigerated as well. I have the en-US oven on low to keep food en-US warm, and I place the serving en-US plate in the oven also on very en-US low just prior to eating. Hot en-US food hot plate, its not that en-US hard. en-US Here are a few tips when en-US serving pancakes or French en-US toast. Heat the syrup or honey en-US in the microwave for a few en-US seconds. Next time you make en-US steak or chops and want steak en-US sauce, heat it up in the en-US microwave for a few seconds. en-US If you have a ceiling fan in the en-US dining area, turn it off. It will en-US cool off food quicker. Serve en-US hot food hot, cold food cold en-US and this will make everyone en-US happy, especially me.en-USSweet Potato Soup en-US (SERVE HOT)en-USServes 4-6en-US Ingredientsen-US 1 pounds baked sweet en-US potatoes peeled or (3 3/4 cups en-US canned sweet potatoes)en-US 2 tablespoons butteren-US 1 cup red onions choppeden-US 2 cups celery choppeden-US 2 teaspoons ground gingeren-US 5 cups chicken stocken-US 1 cup half and half creamen-US 1 teaspoon white ground en-US pepperen-US 1 tablespoon honey en-US Directionsen-US Heat the butter in a sixen-US quart pot and cook over en-US medium heat. Add chicken stock, en-US half and half, sweet potatoes, en-US honey, white pepper, ground en-US ginger and cook over low heat en-US for 2 to 4 minutes until hot. en-US Place soup in a blender or use en-US an immersion blender and en-US mix until smooth. Not pictured was Ben Herstein.en-USI en-UShad scored a big zero in my en-US last spotted sea trout en-US expedition near High en-US Bridge, so this time I took The en-US Green Peanut a little farther en-US north.en-USI live pretty close to the en-US Flagler County line, so it is not en-US much of a stretch. Aside from en-US being territory I dont often en-US fish, the fact an angler may en-US keep five trout instead of the en-US four we are allowed in Volusia en-US County is an added draw. en-US If you are fishing the en-US northern Halifax, you will en-US know you are in Flagler en-US County when you pass the en-US first condos to the east. From en-US there, you will want to head en-US west into the tangle of creeks en-US and mangroves that are part of en-US a large swamp. en-US As soon as I cleared the en-US river, I began to cast my jig en-US about, but for the first 45 en-US minutes I had nary a hit. Just en-US about the time I began en-US thinking of the fishermans en-US favorite excuse line (just en-US happy to be on the water), a en-US stout fish took the jig. At the en-US net I could see it was a beauty en-US of a four-pound sea trout. en-US Before I could congratulate en-US myself too much, it ejected the en-US hook with one last tail flip. en-US Oh well, at least it was en-US promising. en-US I paddled further west with en-US the intention of riding the outen-US -en-US going tide back to the Halifax. en-US I was in a narrow stream of en-US say 60 feet in width and I soon en-US found out there was a deeper en-US channel along the south side en-US of that creek. I found out, en-US because thats where the fish en-US were. Sitting in the deeper en-US water, waiting to ambush en-US anything that was being swept en-US out by the current. en-US My action picked up as I en-US drifted along. The trout were en-US not holding in a tight school en-US as they normally might, but en-US were scattered all along the en-US stream. Nice, fat fish of two to en-US three pounds began to come en-US in. Well some of them came en-US in. I missed as many as I en-US caught. The action was so en-US steady that before long I could en-US see getting my five-fish limit en-US was not going to be difficult. en-US With that in mind, I began to en-US release fish I would love to en-US keep on another, less producen-US -en-US tive day. en-US I hate to preach, but if you en-US have attended any of my talks en-US and seminars, you know I en-US believe you catch more fish by en-US casting into the current and en-US allowing the bait to wash back en-US toward you. All feeding fish sit en-US looking into the current for a en-US meal. Sure you can catch fish en-US casting against the current, en-US but you must know your bait en-US is mostly coming up behind en-US the fish. en-US On this day I was letting my en-US kayak drift backwards en-US downstream so I could cast en-US into the current. Once the en-US Peanut reached the river, I en-US turned to paddle hard back en-US into the swamp to take that en-US drift ride once more. en-US On the second drift, I was en-US about halfway through when I en-US had a hard hit. As I said, the en-US creek had a deeper channel en-US near the shore and I was en-US letting the chartreuse jig drift en-US with the current when it came en-US too close to a downed tree. en-US Out from under that tree a big en-US snook took it and streaked off en-US on a long run that made my en-US little #25 reel sing. en-US The fish headed across the en-US stream and when I pulled back en-US hard to stop it, the snook tried en-US to jump. I say tried, because it en-US was too fat to clear the water. en-US The fish was at least 36 inches en-US long and weighed probably 12 en-US to 15 pounds and I knew I was en-US in trouble. A kayak in swift en-US water is no place to play a fish en-US like that.en-US After a bit, the snook en-US headed up stream and I was en-US getting a ride. The kayak was en-US being pulled against the en-US current by that strong critter. I en-US could only sit there and regain en-US line when possible until the en-US inevitable. The line popped. en-US I had to smile. What a en-US battle. Actually, what a trip. I en-US landed 12 nice sea trout and en-US had played a horse of a snook. en-USFlagler will see me again. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years.
