en-USSomeone needs to lenden-US a hand to Hand Avenueen-USHand Avenue in Ormond Beach is expected to en-US expand west in the future. en-US And, with it, Granada Boulevard should breathe a en-US sigh of relief, or at least people traveling it by vehicle en-US should.en-US Steven Spraker is the Planning Director for the en-US City of Ormond Beach. He said "The general conen-US -en-US cept is to take Hand Avenue where it stops at now at en-US Williamson over I-95 to connect with Timber Creek en-US Road. It is really funding-based. My understand en-US ingis it is an expensive project because it is crossing en-US I-95 and a tributary of the Tomoka River so there are en-US some environmental concerns and some specific en-US ways it would have to be built.en-US The idea isnt a new one," Mr. Spraker said. There en-US are limited corridors to go east to west and en-US basically the design is to take some of the en-US pressure off Granada Boulevard by providing en-US other accesses. It is a relief mechanism to en-US Granada Boulevard.en-US Its a long-range plan, he said. The (Hand en-US Avenue) extension would be in Daytona en-US Beach and unincorporated Volusia County, en-US so there is only so much Ormond Beach can do. I en-US dont know if there is a funding source being identien-US -en-US fied at this point. en-US The plan must first go to The River to Sea Transen-US -en-US portation Planning Organization, which has repreen-US -en-US sentatives from the county and each of the cities.en-US It must be included in the Long-Range Transporen-US -en-US tation Plan, saidLois Bollenback, executive director en-US of the River to Sea TPO. The current long-range en-US plan en-US developed for this en-US area has a planning horizon of the year en-US 2040 and identifies just over $2 billion in funding en-US for roads, trails, transit, interchanges, sidewalks, en-US traffic operations and safety improvements. An en-US extension of Hand Avenue to the west was included en-USIts a challenge for law en-US enforcement officers when en-US they encounter someone en-US with autism.en-US So, the Ponce Inlet Police en-US Department is on a mission en-US to increase autism awareness en-US through training and also en-US putting Autism Awareness en-US Month decals on patrol cars.en-US April is World Autism en-US Month. en-US The Center for Disease en-US Control estimates about 1 in en-US 68 children have autism en-US spectrum disorder. Signs of en-US ASD begin in early childen-US -en-US hood and typically are life-en-US long. People with ASD have en-US problems with social, emoen-US -en-US tional and communication en-US skills.en-US Law enforcement is a en-US diverse duty, and people with en-US autism are part of that diveren-US -en-US sity, a Ponce Inlet Police en-US news release states. On a en-US daily basis we encounter a en-US multitude of individuals in en-US emergency situations. Just as en-US each emergency differs from en-US the next, so do the individuen-US-en-US als involved, especially in en-US regards to individuals with en-US autism spectrum disorders. en-US We are trained to respond to en-US a crisis situation with a ceren-US -en-US tain protocol, but this protoen-US-en-US col may not always be the en-US best way to interact with en-US individuals with autism.en-US Autism awareness is cruen-US -en-US cial in emergencies, accorden-US -en-US ing to the news release. Our en-US mission here is to recognize en-US the symptoms, respond and en-US interact appropriately, ensure en-US the safety of all involved, and en-USLaw enforcement en-US helps autism en-US awareness en-USPrison en-US program en-US has en-US 12 pups en-US graduateen-USPrison Pups N Pals 46th en-US graduation at Tomoka Coren-US -en-US rectional Institute March en-US 29 resulted in all 12 dogs en-US graduating and finding en-US permanent homes.en-US The training they en-US received from Tomoka en-US inmates greatly increased en-US their adoptability from the en-US Halifax Humane Society.en-US It marks a bittersweet day en-US for inmates who spend en-US more than two months liven-US -en-US ing with and caring for the en-US dogs. en-US Officer Gail Irwin runs en-US the Pups N Pals program en-US now in its 8th year with en-US over 500 canine graduates. en-US She said The best thing I en-US see out of this program is it en-US gives these inmates a better en-US Randy Barber/staff photographeren-USInmate and dog trainer James Lambert gets a en-US kiss from Brandy during the Prison Pups-N-Pals en-US Graduation Ceremony at Tomoka Correctional en-US Institution Work Camp in Daytona Beach on en-US Thursday, March 29. en-USCouncil transfers en-US funds to community en-US developmenten-USDuring a meeting for legisen-US-en-US lative updates, plans for future en-US programs and county busien-US-en-US ness, the Volusia County en-US Council also did some budget en-US spring cleaning.en-US In an effort to close out en-US grant funding through the en-US Neighborhood Stabilization en-US Program, the County Council en-US approved transferring en-US $300,000 from the NSP1 en-US accounts into the Community en-US Development Block Grant en-US fund.en-US The county has expended en-US all of its NSP1 grant funds and en-US is undertaking administrative en-US steps to close out its NSP1 en-US grant with the U.S. Departen-US-en-US ment of Housing and Urban en-US Development, Dona Butler, en-US county community services en-US director and staff explained en-US within the agenda item. HUD en-US has issued formal written en-US guidance that allows NSP en-US grantees to transfer program en-US income earned and received en-US through its NSP program en-US activities to its CDBG proen-US -en-US gram, rather than using the en-US program income in its NSP en-US program.en-US The program income that is en-US transferred to the CDBG proen-US -en-US gram will still be subject to the en-US regulations governing the en-US CDBG program, ensuring the en-US money is used only for peren-US -en-US missable purposes.en-US Following the housing maren-US -en-US ket crash and foreclosure crien-US -en-US sis, HUD offered the NSP as a en-US non-recurring grant program en-US to address the financial impact en-US on communities nationwide. en-US In addition to being a direct en-US grantee of both NSP1 and en-US NSP3 grant funds, Volusia also en-US is a CDBG-entitled communien-US-en-US ty, according to county staff en-US reports.en-US The funds to be transferred en-US are NSP program income en-US earned from repayment of secen-US -en-US ond mortgages attached to en-US first-time homebuyer properen-US -en-US ties that were resold, Ms. Buten-US -en-US ler and staff said in the agenda en-US item submitted to council. en-US The community assistance en-US division estimates that it will en-USButterfly gardeneren-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USSuzie Shaffer of Ormond Beach looks for plants that attract butterflies en-US during the Seaside Herb Societys annual Spring Herb Faire at Bailey Riveren-US -en-US bridge Park in Ormond Beach on Saturday, April 7. It gives en-US them a whole new life.en-US The program is now in its en-US eighth year and has had more en-US than 500 canines graduate.en-US The five-year-old Paws of en-US Freedom also is part of the en-US ceremony, where some dogs en-US are specifically trained by en-US inmates to give to veterans en-US who may suffer from en-US post-traumatic stress disorder.en-US Brian Masters served four en-US years in the U.S. Navy and was en-US in attendance to see his new en-US dog, Reese, a chihuahua mix, en-US graduate. His new companion en-US was trained by Todd Wilson en-US and Richard Leach from the en-US prison.en-US Mr. Masters felt a dog would en-US help some of his anxiety issues. en-US en-US I came out a couple of en-US weeks ago to see how training en-US was going and I came back en-US today, he said. I am learning en-US (the commands) as he is. He en-US has been doing really well.en-US While Mr. Masters is getting en-US an emotional support animal, en-US he likes that anyone can adopt en-US a dog in the program. I hope en-US it helps the inmates, but I en-US know it has to be sad for them en-US because they get attached to en-US the dogs and then they leave.en-US Its a good program for the en-US inmates, though, Mr. Wilson en-US said.en-US It takes shelter dogs from en-US Halifax Humane Society, en-US brings them in here, and we en-US make them more adoptable so en-US they can get a forever home, en-US the inmate said. We give them en-US basic obedien-USence training and a en-US little impulse control work. It en-US gives me an opportunity to en-US give back to the community. I en-US have always had a love for en-US dogs. It helps me get through en-US the time.en-US Jimmy Lambert trained en-US Brandy, along with Alec Adler. en-US Mr. Lambert said he has been en-US involved with the program en-US about four years and gets en-US patience, a sense of self-en-US worth, giving back; a real speen-US-en-US cial feeling the dogs bring to en-US you.en-US It is bittersweet, he said. I en-US made a lot of mistakes, but this en-US is a way of giving back espeen-US -en-US cially when our dogs go to a en-US veteran.en-US Mr. Lambert also has hopes en-US for a job when he gets out, he en-US said. I was able to get my en-US advanced trainers certificate en-US so when (I) get out of here, it en-US will be a good job opportunity. en-US I have almost 10,000 hours en-US already. It is going to be a en-US career you can go out to.en-US Another tiny graduate, en-US Sprout, is deaf. en-US Her trainer, Henry Ortiz, en-US said, You have to have a lot of en-US patience, dedication and help. en-US It was kind of a challenge. I en-US thought it was going to be en-US impossible to train her, but she en-US is highly intelligent and she en-US knows everything by hand sigen-US -en-US nals. I am glad I had her. She en-US shows me a lot of uncondien-US -en-US tional love. en-US Dolores and Bruce Ribisi, en-US who live in Port Orange, got en-US their dog Benji at the graduaen-US-en-US tion. I think it is a wonderful en-US program, Mr. Ribisi said. en-US They train the dogs and are en-US helping themselves to a better en-US life.en-US Benjis trainer, Kenji Leveren-US -en-US ette, said, He has found a en-US home. He doesnt have to go en-US back to the Humane Society. en-US We inmates get a lot from this en-US program. This year, we en-US decided on a radically en-US different route and one that en-US turned out to be very pleasuren-US -en-US able. en-US We began with lunch at the en-US new Jimmy Buffett-styled en-US LandShark Bar and Grill. en-US While still in the parking lot, en-US it was plain to see two old en-US parrot heads were home. The en-US restaurant boasted a big en-US sharks fin high atop the roof en-US and a surfboard with a bite en-US taken out of it on the outside en-US wall. Sharks fins would prove en-US to be the dominant dcor.en-US The bar and grill is large, en-US with plenty of room to stroll en-US about and enjoy the great en-US views and fun signs on the en-US walls. My favorite was one that en-US read: I just want to live happien-US -en-US ly ever after now and then. en-US That is a line from an old en-US Buffett song. en-US For lunch, I couldnt help en-US but opt for the cheeseburger en-US in paradise (here it is called a en-US LandShark burger) while Lana en-US ordered peel-and-eat shrimp en-US in Old Bay seasoning. We en-US both agreed lunch was great. en-US The whole place sits on en-US about two acres of sand atop en-US the sea wall just off the beach. en-US Out back, there is a deck en-US where you can watch various en-US beach games in progress. A en-US short walk through the sand en-US takes you to a big outdoor en-US open-air tiki-hut bar. The en-US place is well done, and the en-US staff was efficient and en-US courteous. As we left, we en-US made plans to return. en-US After lunch, we took a short en-US drive north to the new Hard en-US Rock Hotel. All I can say en-US about that place is WOW! en-US Immediately upon entering en-US that gleaming facility, you are en-US surrounded by memorabilia en-US that is guaranteed to blow the en-US mind of the average fan of en-US rock and roll. I must say that I en-US am not the average rock fan. I en-US am much more hard core than en-US that. What a place! en-US The Daytona Beach Hard en-US Rock has tried to stick to en-US themes that reflect our local en-US heritage. The beach, racing en-US and our own Allman Brothers en-US Band are all well represented.en-US In the lobby, first up was a en-US full body suit worn by en-US Rhianna and then a glittery en-US bikini worn by Taylor Swift. en-US Also displayed is a plaque en-US telling of our past ties to MTV en-US and a Moon Man (the original en-US MTV music award.) Just en-US upstairs, you will see a bike en-US donated by guitarist Steve Vai en-US and walls of photos none of us en-US ever knew existed. One shows en-US the Beatles romping on a en-US beach with The Rolling en-US Stones. Rare pics of the en-US Allman Brothers, Beach boys en-US and lots of others are there, en-US too. My favorite is a photo of en-US the Fab Four in a swimming en-US pool with only their heads en-US showing. en-US There is a full Jimi Hendrix en-US outfit that shows just how en-US flamboyant the famed guitar en-US virtuoso was (and how small en-US in stature.) Guitars adorn the en-US walls everywhere, with my en-US favorites being one signed by en-US Tom Petty and one by The en-US Allman Brothers. There is a en-US jacket worn by Elvis from the en-US movie Speedway, keeping en-US with the racing theme. en-US Later, we went to an outside en-US bar that overlooks a big pool en-US and the Atlantic Ocean. I en-US ordered tequila and passion en-US fruit juice with spices, and en-US Lana asked the female barkeep en-US to recommend something en-US tasty. Her drink came out all en-US red in a tall fluted glass, and I en-US could tell by her first sip it was en-US good. What was the name of en-US that, I asked? I cant rememen-US -en-US ber, she replied. Maybe heaven-US -en-US en! en-US What a new and different en-US Easter that was for us. I would en-US urge you all to visit both en-US places and see what great en-US things are happening at our en-US beach. LandShark is at 471 S. en-US Atlantic Ave. and the Hard en-US Rock is at 918 N. They have twin en-US daughters, Courtney, who is en-US autistic, and Cassidy.en-US Ms. Mead brought the decal en-US idea to the department last en-US year after seeing it done at en-US another police department en-US and credits Chief Fabrizio with en-US being all over it. en-US Every person with autism en-US ticks differently, she said.en-US More police departments, en-US such as in Ormond Beach en-US where she lives, have increased en-US autism training for staff, and en-US that it is now mandated in en-US Florida law. The Volusia en-US County Sheriffs Office verien-US -en-US fied that deputies train for en-US autism awareness. en-US Ms. Mead said when dealing en-US with persons with autism en-US never give up, it is not an en-US option. en-US She takes a lesson from en-US Courtney, who lives uninhiben-US -en-US ited the way we all wish we en-US could without societal presen-US -en-US sure. People under stress like en-US with police involvement are en-US going to act differently. en-USOrmond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill A-9en-USRen-USeady to retire? Many en-US people can hardly wait!en-USMaybe you are in en-US your late 50s and know en-US retirement is just around the en-US corner. If youve been a good en-US saver and/or investor, you en-US could be asking yourself if en-US retiring at 62, instead of en-US waiting until your full en-US retirement age, is a possibility. en-US (The earliest you can take en-US Social Security is 62, but, if en-US you wait, your monthly en-US benefit will continue to en-US increase through age 70). en-US If youve already made the en-US decision to retire early, there is en-US an important thing to keep in en-US mind: health insurance is a en-US major expense and rates en-US continue to rise. So, how do en-US you bridge the health-insuren-US -en-US ance gap between an early en-US retirement and applying for en-US Medicare at age 65? There are en-US several strategies; here are just en-US a few:en-US Spouses Plan: If your en-US spouse is still working, you en-US may be able to obtain health en-US coverage as a dependent en-US under his/her employer-sponen-US -en-US sored plan. Make sure to find en-US out the details and cost ahead en-US of time. Depending on the en-US plan, the size of the group and en-US other factors, this could still en-US be an expensive option.en-US Look to the ACA: Regarden-US -en-US less of your opinion of en-US Obamacare, the Affordable en-US Care Act is still in effect and it en-US could provide the answer to en-US your short-term health en-US insurance needs. You can log en-US on to to en-US compare rates and plans.en-US Semi-retire: Many people en-US equate receiving Social en-US Security benefits with a total en-US discontinuation of employen-US -en-US ment. But you dont have to en-US quit completely! If you take SS en-US benefits at age 62, you could en-US opt to work just enough hours en-US to qualify for a companys en-US health insurance plan. Then, en-US at age 65, you could file for en-US Medicare and move into en-US retirement. en-US This could be a great en-US transitional step between en-US full-time work and full-time en-US retirement. The only catch, en-US however, is if you are younger en-US than your full retirement age, en-US and earn more than $17,040 en-US (in 2018), your SS benefit will en-US be reduced by $1 for every $2 en-US you earn over that annual en-US limit. (Beginning in the en-US month you reach full retireen-US -en-US ment age, there will no longer en-US be a reduction in SS benefits.) en-US Line of Credit: If you are age en-US 62 or older, and own a home, en-US you could consider a reverse en-US mortgage line of credit loan en-US (HECM). The borrower must en-US continue to pay homeowners en-US insurance, property taxes and en-US home maintenance, but a en-US HECM could provide the en-US money to pay for expenses, en-US like health insurance, prior to en-US applying for Medicare at age en-US 65. You could also use it to en-US meet your cash flow needs in en-US order to delay taking Social en-US Security payments. (Again, en-US the longer you wait to take en-US Social Security, the larger your en-US monthly benefit will be.)en-US Whether you decide to en-US retire in your 50s, at 62, at en-US your full retirement age or en-US beyond, its important to have en-US a sound financial strategy. Ms Pruitt is assisted by Patient Care Coordinator Samantha Carpenter whose job is to schedule patients appointments, pre-authorizations, billing, and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of hearing aids. She has been with Florida State Hearing Aids for six years, working an additional eight years with Ms Pruitt before that. When asked what makes her business unique, Ms. Pruitt said, My business gives individual one on one service to every client. You wont walk in two weeks after you purchase your hearing aids and get a random person that doesnt really care about you at all, they dont know you, they didnt test or fit you, and you feel left out in the cold. There is a lot of competition in the newspapers advertising low, low prices on hearing aids, she said. The problem is in the small print. I dont do bait and switch ads. It is insulting to todays consumer. FREE or discounted hearing aids for GEHA, APWU, Federal employees, Empire Plan, Epic and local insurances. We also Veterans. Since then, sigen-US -en-US nificant development activity en-US has been announced and a en-US variety of road improvements en-US are being considered.en-US The extension of Hand Aveen-US -en-US nue has resurfaced as a needed en-US transportation improvement, en-US she said. But responding to en-US growth and development in en-US the Ormond Beach area will en-US require a variety of improveen-US -en-US ments.en-US Local governments are en-US working with developers and en-US the state Department of Transen-US -en-US portation to use traffic foreen-US -en-US casting models to estimate the en-US road improvements that will en-US be needed, including improveen-US -en-US ments to LPGA Boulevard, en-US Williamson Road, the I-95 en-US interchange at LPGA and en-US other new roads that are being en-US considered.en-US The pace of development is en-US moving more quickly than the en-US flow of funding typically used en-US to support these sorts of en-US improvements, according to en-US Ms. Bollenback. The River to en-US Sea TPO has worked to en-US advance projects that will use en-US state or federal funding.en-US She noted FDOT is studying en-US the potential traffic demand in en-US the area with proposed en-US improvements to the interen-US -en-US change expected this summer.en-US The TPO puts out a call for en-US projects each year, too.en-US Shaun Finley, Ormond en-US Beach deputy city engineer, en-US notes the Hand extension is in en-US the preliminary stage. We are en-US recognizing that development en-US is occurring both here in en-US Ormond Beach and in some of en-US the adjacent communities and en-US we are looking at some differen-US -en-US ent alternatives for handling en-US some roadway capacity, he en-US said.en-US We are going to submit an en-US application for a transportaen-US-en-US tion study with this current en-US call for projects, Mr. Finley en-US said. What are the options for en-US extending it, what are the en-US obstacles, what would need to en-US be overcome, how could we en-US extend it if it is possible. Hand en-US Avenue extension is someen-US -en-US thing that has been talked en-US about since the 1970s. en-US An eventual connection that en-US brings Timber Creek Road en-US down to LPGA Boulevard en-US would create a destination for en-US Hand Avenue that would en-US make more sense than in the en-US past, he said. Also, there is not en-US a good arterial connection en-US west of I-95 right now as Hand en-US Avenue terminates at Williamen-US -en-US son Boulevard, but that can en-US change as things develop. en-US Ormond Beach would have en-US to work with Daytona Beach en-US and the county if the extension en-US is a possibility, Mr. Finley said. en-US He anticipates it wont come en-US to fruition for a decade given en-US the studies that need to be en-US done.en-USAvenueen-USFrom page A1

The breakneck speed en-US of his single-note staccato en-US picking technique and en-US showmanship with the guitar en-US is considered a precursor to en-US heavy metal music, influencen-US -en-US ing guitarists such as Jimi en-US Hendrix and Eddie Van en-US Halen. en-US A surfer, Mr. Dale wanted en-US his music to reflect the en-US sounds he heard in his mind en-US while surfing, and thus en-US became one of the first elecen-US -en-US tric guitarists to use rapid en-US scales in his playing. No, I en-US dont watch people buying en-US food in the grocery stores. en-US It is information and en-US research I gather from a very en-US special group of people based en-US on data from observing their en-US eating habits. Who are these en-US people? What makes them so en-US special? Is the information en-US accurate? Absolutely, positiveen-US -en-US ly yes and here is why.en-US My brother-in-law is the en-US special weapons instructor at en-US the U.S. Naval Academy at en-US Annapolis, Md., and each en-US year, at Spring Break, he takes en-US the Combat Arms Team to en-US compete in several events on en-US the east coast. The last event is en-US in Volusia County, so he en-US always brings the team to our en-US home to spend the night, and en-US I feed them dinner and en-US breakfast the next day. en-US For years I have fed them en-US meat and potatoes, prime rib, en-US pork roasts, potatoes and no en-US vegetables with brownies for en-US dessert. Breakfast was biscuits en-US and gravy, bacon and eggs, en-US and more bacon. Not this year. en-US Yes, I had the prime rib, but en-US they requested roasted en-US chicken, salmon, fresh salads, en-US gluten free bread and lots of en-US fresh fruit. en-US Now these 12-14 college en-US students, ranging from en-US freshmen to seniors, repreen-US -en-US sented a cross-section of en-US America. Each year they en-US would normally eat two prime en-US ribs, a beef brisket, 20 pounds en-US of roasted potatoes, five big en-US loaves of homemade bread, en-US five pounds of cheese and 50 en-US brownies. This year they ate en-US six roasted chickens, two en-US salmon slabs, 3/4 of a prime en-US rib, a large salad, and I mean en-US large, little bread, 15 brownies en-US and all the fruit in the house, en-US which included more than six en-US flats of strawberries, six flats en-US of blueberries, five pounds of en-US grapes and two dozen en-US oranges. en-US The next morning I made en-US eggs and bacon, and some en-US shrimps and cheese grits, and, en-US yes, more fresh fruit. They ate en-US the eggs and bacon, all the en-US fresh fruit plus five gallons of en-US orange juice, little shrimp and en-US grits. en-US Yes, times are changing and en-US so are the eating habits of the en-US country, because I have the en-US facts to prove it. I am afraid en-US they missed out on a great en-US Southern treat, but you dont en-US have to. Here is my New en-US Orleans style cheese shrimp en-US and grits recipe. Its still worth en-US trying.en-USShrimp and Gritsen-USServes 6en-US Ingredientsen-US 1-1/2 pounds medium en-US shrimp, peeled, halved en-US lengthwise and deveined if en-US you wish en-US Juice of 1 lemon en-US 1 teaspoon Tabasco or other en-US hot pepper sauce en-US 1-1/2 teaspoon salt or more en-US to taste en-US 1-1/2 cups stone-ground en-US grits, not instant or en-US quick-cooking en-US 6 thick slices bacon, en-US chopped en-US 2 cups half and half cream en-US 2 tablespoons unsalted en-US butter en-US 2 cup grated medium to en-US sharp Cheddar cheese en-US Directionsen-US Combine the shrimp with en-US the lemon juice and a couple en-US of generous splashes of hot en-US pepper sauce; set aside. Add en-US grits, half and half cream, en-US butter, and salt into a two en-US quart pot. Simmer over en-US medium heat stirring slowly en-US until grits are tender (addien-US -en-US tional cream may be needed), en-US about 5 -10 minutes.en-US In a separate saut pan cook en-US bacon until slightly brown. en-US Then add shrimp and cook en-US until pink. Add bacon and en-US shrimp to cooked grits. Add en-US cheeses and mix well. Desi Releford, who also en-US had a major league career, will en-US be the new bench coach. en-US This years roster features en-US Scott Moss, a left-handed en-US pitcher from Deltona, who en-US says he likes to throw fastballs. en-US I went to Deland High School en-US and then I went to University en-US of Florida for college (he is en-US working on an economics en-US degree). I played in Dayton, en-US Ohio, last year, Mr. Moss said. en-US We basically all traveled up en-US together through the system. I en-US think it is going to be a really en-US great year.en-US I have been with these guys en-US now for a year and a half so far, en-US and we have become a close-en-US knit group, he said. I know en-US all the pitchers are very close en-US and the position players are en-US close as well. We all mess with en-US each other, but, at the end of en-US the day, we know we are going en-US to do good together. en-US He added his mom was en-US happy to see he would be in en-US Daytona and he is living at en-US home. en-US Although last years record en-US showed more losses than wins en-US (one factor was eight of last en-US years players moved up to AA en-US ball during the season), fans en-US remained loyal. For example, en-US when the team was struggling en-US in July and August, Mr. Keur en-US in a previous interview said en-US attendance was at an all-time en-US high. en-US Even if we are losing on the en-US field the fans are still coming en-US out and supporting their en-US team, he said. We cant conen-US -en-US trol what happens on the field, en-US win or lose, but we can control en-US that people have a good time en-US when they are here.en-US He added they have the en-US opportunity to activate the en-US ballpark 365 days a year. One en-US initiative is to try and figure en-US out how to capture the en-US non-baseball fan, to use the en-US ballpark as a venue. He said en-US almost every weekend someen-US-en-US thing will be going on, whethen-US -en-US er the team is in town or not. en-US The calendar is full of events.en-US The Tortugas prided themen-US-en-US selves on being the best en-US dressed team in baseball last en-US year with a variety of unique en-US jerseys worn during Friday en-US home games. The trend will en-US continue this year with superen-US -en-US hero jerseys, a new Star Wars en-US jersey and others.en-US A large video board has en-US been added to the ballpark in en-US left center field. It will feature a en-US kiss-cam, player shots and en-US entertainment between en-US innings. en-USB-8 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USAen-USfter dropping my 17-foot en-US Polar in at Tomoka State en-US Park, I took a quick spin en-US around the northern edge of the en-US Tomoka Basin. en-USNot actually fishing, but just en-US hoping to spook up a few big en-US red drum so I could return en-US later in the morning. Nothing en-US showed itself. No matter, my en-US target on this day was to fish en-US the Tomoka River to try and en-US have a little fun with some of en-US the snook my buddy Norm en-US had been bragging about.en-US Norm lives on the river and en-US had reported catching and en-US releasing over 80 in just over en-US six weeks. Thats right 80. en-US How could I ignore something en-US like that? en-US I began just after 8 a.m. with en-US a full tide that was just en-US beginning to ebb. My plan was en-US to cast the mouths of the en-US creeks that feed the river. I had en-US two rods on board, both en-US baited with MirrOlures. The en-US first with my standby red and en-US white twitch bait and the en-US second with an old blue en-US MirrOlure Jr. I have had for en-US decades. en-US I began with the first. There en-US was no visible bait in then-US e en-US water and nothing was en-US feeding, but on my fifth cast a en-US nice snook hit and took off on en-US a long run. A stout fish. As the en-US fight wore on, I began to en-US worry. My snook did not en-US jump or roll even though it en-US was near the surface on a en-US couple of occasions. As it en-US came near the boat, I stopped en-US worrying as it began the en-US telltale headsen-US hake of a jack. en-US Not what I hoped for, but still en-US good fun. en-US The jack was bright yellow en-US and gold as it flashed through en-US the brown water, the red plug en-US stuck to the side of its face. A en-US pretty fish that was clearly en-US unhurt as I released it. The en-US jacks are a worthy opponent en-US and this one at five to six en-US pounds had stretched my en-US 10-pound line near capacity.en-US Now fishing with the blue en-US lure, I soon had another hit en-US and this time my fish acted en-US just the way a snook is en-US supposed to. The pretty snook en-US was only 18 inches long, but en-US strong enough to give me a en-US few minutes of pleasure. Next en-US I threw the red and white to a en-US nice 17-inch spotted sea trout. en-US That was a welcome surprise.en-US Now I was nearing the U.S. en-US 1 bridge and suddenly en-US something began feeding en-US along a sea wall. I am well en-US aware of the habit of the jacks en-US pushing their potential meal en-US up against the concrete before en-US gulping them down. Still, I en-US will never run from a fight, so en-US I made the cast. Bam! As soon en-US as the lure hit the water, the en-US fish had it and streaked out en-US into the center of the river. en-US When I pulled back hard to en-US turn it, a nice snook jumped. en-US My jack turned out to be a en-US 22-inch snen-US ook. A day of en-US surprises. For the rest of the en-US morning, small snook kept me en-US busy as I landed two and en-US missed four. Once or twice I en-US saw a larger one feeding, but en-US could never get into position en-US to make the right cast. Still, on en-US the ride home I had to smile. I en-US had not caught the numbers en-US Norm had spoken of, but they en-US were there just as he had told en-US me. en-US After such a cold winter, I en-US was pleased to know we still en-US have a healthy fishery of en-US young snook. That bodes well en-US for the future. en-US Dan Smith has fished the en-US waters of Volusia County for en-US more than 40 years.
