en-USThe Daytona Beach Planning Board unanimously en-US approved a large scale comprehensive plan amenden-US-en-US ment for Project Beta as well as a rezoning to en-US planned development March 22, according to Susan en-US Cerbone, city public information officer. en-US Both planning board requests were made by Roben-US-en-US ert A. Merrell III of Cobb Cole, on behalf of John P. en-US Albright, Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co. en-US One of the parcels in the new development is the en-US new Costa sunglasses (Costa del Mar) headquaren-US -en-US ters, Mr. Merrell said. The other ones are not seten-US -en-US tled yet in terms of who the actual users will be.en-US He added one of the parcels in the Beta PD has the en-US Costa site plan, which is being worked on right now. en-US Costa del Mar already has facilities not far en-US away on Mason Avenue. en-US Costa del Mar produces expensive, but en-US popular suen-US nglasses as you can tell from its en-US website.en-US Each naturally hypoallergenic frame is en-US made by hand using five-barrel hinges, first-en-US rate plastic-coated screws, Diamond Cut and en-US Mother of Pearl treated logos, custom topographical en-US etched core wires that allow for an excellent fit as en-US well as complete adjustability to produce premium en-US sunglasses that allow you to ride the tides of life and en-US look gen-US ood while doing it, the website states.en-US Also, Weve devoted our lives to chasing the most en-US remote places that bring us to life. Thats why weve en-US developed the best sunglasses in the world to help us en-US reach en-US these sought-after en-US locales. Because Costas are more than sunen-US-en-US glasses, theyre the badge of the explorer. en-US The 14.65-acre site for the Costa headquarters is en-US generally north of Dunn Avenue and west of Mason en-US Avenue extension and is undeveloped. en-USVolusia County provides a en-US wealth of resources to help en-US others, but those resources en-US are seeing a shortage of the en-US volunteers that make the criten-US-en-US ical services possible.en-US Florida ranks last, 50th out en-US of 50 states, in the country in en-US the area of active volunteers, en-US according to a study by the en-US Corporation for National en-US and Community Services en-US most current available numen-US-en-US bers. As of 2016, just 19.1 en-US percent of Floridians volunen-US -en-US teered their time, leaving en-US about 81 percent of volunteer en-US needs either unfilled or short en-US staffed.en-US One easily identifiable reaen-US -en-US son for the volunteer shorten-US-en-US age is the need always is en-US increasing, said Kim Taylor, en-US who works in recruitment en-US and public relations for the en-US Guardian Ad Litem Program en-US for the Seventh Judicial Ciren-US -en-US cuit. en-US There is an abundance of en-US children in the foster care en-US system right now, (and) a en-US lack of foster homes as well, en-US she said. We just cant find en-US enough people to make the en-US commitment. Its not for en-US everyone -you have to have en-US a real heart for kids. We have en-US so many children that could en-US greatly benefit from having en-US their own Guardian Ad en-US Litem, I cant even express.en-US In an increasingly busy en-US society, time constraints can en-US be a big reason for a lack of en-US volunteers in a time-intenen-US -en-US sive volunteer position, she en-USArea suffering en-US critical need en-US for volunteers en-USPutting a en-US face on en-US homeen-US -en-US lessnessen-USHe is a familiar face at Dayen-US -en-US tona Beach commission en-US meetings, attending every en-US one. en-US And he always has someen-US -en-US thing to say. Yet Doyle en-US Wayne Lewis, 50, is homeless en-US and has been for eight years.en-US He was born in Texas en-US where his mother and four en-US siblings still reside. Divorced, en-US Mr. Lewis spends his nights en-US at any number of 70 different en-US spots over a 35-mile area, en-US generally staying toen-US himself, en-US he said.en-US I moved my wife here en-US (Ormond Beach) during en-US Spring Break in 2004, he en-US said. I had to go back and en-US sell out my business. I sold en-US out a little bit, then I had to en-US go back two years later and en-US sell out the rest. en-US He lost the house in 2010 en-US after he lost the business and en-US Photo by Diane Careyen-USDoyle Lewis, who is homeless, stands outside the en-US Daytona Beach City Commission chambers after en-US a meeting on Wednesday, March 21. en-USSchool board en-US looks at long-en-US term financesen-USVolusia County School en-US Board members and school en-US administrators are working en-US to determine priorities for en-US their five-year capital work en-US program. en-US At a board workshop preen-US -en-US ceding the regular school en-US board meeten-US ing March 27, the en-US district began the first of en-US their 2018-19 budget worken-US-en-US shops.en-US We will focus on the en-US issues we have determined en-US are important and affecting en-US the budget, said Deb Muelen-US -en-US ler, chief financial officer for en-US the district.en-US With tight budgets, the en-US district must focus on the en-US issues that will fund the en-US most-needed projects, Ms. en-US Mueller said.en-US The issues weve identien-US-en-US fied that aren-US e (adversely) en-US affecting our five-year work en-US program (are) funding and en-US costs, enrollment trends and en-US completing priorities, she en-US said in a presentation to the en-US board. The funding and en-US costs result in the revenue en-US allocations and how those en-US have changed for the local en-US capital improvement fund en-US and also our half-cent sales en-US tax program.en-US Costs are escalating, en-US enrollment trends have en-US changed, and we also have en-US competing priorities and en-US choices have to be made, she en-US said. en-US Competing priorities en-US include capacity-related en-US issues; expenditures to keep en-US technology current; increasen-US-en-US ing security needs; repair, en-US purchase and replacement of en-US buses, vehicles and furniture; en-US curriculum-related expenses; en-US athletic facilities mainteen-US-en-US nance and repair; and facilien-US -en-US ties and systems conditions.en-US Other issues relative to the en-US revenue sources include en-US declining impact fees and en-US state funding, which have en-US caused budget constraints, as en-US well as projects that had to be en-USReady, set, goen-USRandy Barber/staff photographeren-USWhile the route was squeezed by high tide, children take off in the kids run en-US during the 51st annual Easter Beach Run at the Bandshell in Daytona en-US Beach on Saturday, March 31. en-USVol. 13, No.12 Your Local News and Information Source www.HometownNewsVolusia.com Friday, April 6, 2018 ORMOND BEACH DA YT ONA BEACH HOLLY HILL inside Searching en-USfor life en-US from other en-US planetsen-US Page A3en-USLand en-US Linesen-US@HometownNewsVolusia @Hometownnewsvolusia @HVolusi Best Dentist 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S 386-944-5001KERRI GRAHAM, D.M.D.802 Sterthaus Drive Suite A, Ormond Beach, FL Trusted, Comfortable & Affordable Dental CareVISIT US AT ORMONDSMILES.COMSee ad inside for more information Need Teeth? Call Today 386-226-9110 S en-USince I was a lad, I have en-US been more than a little en-US interested in the possibility en-US that life forms exist elsewhere in en-US the universe. en-USOh, I dont suppose I really en-US believe there are aliens out en-US there, but I do have an open en-US mind. My wife, Lana, would en-US tell you that in the 44-plus en-US years she has known me, I en-US have often expressed a hope en-US that if there are space creaen-US -en-US tures, they would make an en-US appearance before I check out.en-US As a young boy, I would en-US often go down to the train en-US yards on a clear night to lie en-US atop the cars and stare at the en-US sky. I didnt expect to see en-US anything, but I always enjoyed en-US looking. The curiosity of en-US youth, I suppose.en-US Now, dont get me wrong. I en-US am not a fan of science fiction en-US as portrayed on television and en-US in the movies. To me that is en-US just Hollywood schlock. I was en-US never a Trekkie or a Star Wars en-US geek. What I do enjoy are the en-US things here on Earth that are en-US unexplainable. The 1973 TV en-US series In Search Of Ancient en-US Astronauts touched on some en-US of that, and the shows about en-US prehistoric aliens always en-US fascinate me. en-US Sometime back, my son, en-US Landan, and I were watching en-US The Discovery Channel when en-US something strange appeared. en-US A tiny village in Asia has en-US about a dozen spires scattered en-US about. They are about four en-US feet thick and 30 feet tall and en-US are made from stone and en-US mortar. When the American en-US filmmakers questioned the en-US villagers about the origins of en-US the obelisks, no one there had en-US a clue. en-US You mean to tell me that en-US throughout the years, those en-US people have lived in the en-US shadows of those large stone en-US spires and no one ever en-US questioned where they came en-US from and who put them there? en-US That seems to me to be a thing en-US that would be passed on from en-US parent to child through the en-US generations. Not a soul knew en-US anything about them. en-US That is the kind of thing en-US that sparks my imagination. en-US We have all seen photos of the en-US big land etchings on the en-US mountain plains of Peru that en-US must be viewed from the air in en-US order to see what they en-US represent. Those were en-US obviously done before we had en-US aircraft.en-US Not long ago, my 14-year-en-US old granddaughter, Delayna, en-US went with a group to tour the en-US Kennedy Space Center. For en-US the day, they were accompaen-US -en-US nied by one of the actual en-US astronauts, a fellow who had en-US logged more than 6 million en-US miles in space.en-US Delayna had a great time en-US and couldnt wait to tell her en-US grandpaw of her visit. en-US Apparently, at a quesen-US -en-US tion-and-answer session, the en-US astronaut told the group he en-US was certain there are extra-teren-US -en-US restrials out there. Now, hold en-US on! This guy is the real deal, en-US and he believes in space en-US aliens? en-US To me, that is about as close en-US to proof as you can get. In all en-US those hours spent in space, en-US what did he see? What does he en-US know? The man also told the en-US kids he believes we are the en-US space aliens to other beings in en-US the universe. Now theres a en-US concept! With this mans vast en-US experience, I have to believe en-US him. en-US OK, space aliens, come on, en-US show yourselves! Im running en-US out of time. en-US Dan Smith is on the board of en-US directors for the Ormond Beach en-US Historical Society and The en-US Motor Racing Heritage en-US Association and is the author en-US of two books, The Worlds en-US Greatest Beach and I Swear en-US the Snook Drowned. The student club en-US has been working with villages en-US and schools in the Caribbean en-US country, constructingen-US water en-US purification systems in cholen-US -en-US era-stricken communities and en-US others with contaminated en-US water since 2010. She said the en-US trip forever changed her life.en-US When the children heard en-US they were going to have clean en-US water, it was like telling them en-US theen-US y were going to Disney en-US World, Ms. Hunt said. It en-US changed my perspective on en-US the importance of small things en-US we normally take for granted. I en-US really enjoyed the ability to use en-US what Ive been learning to help en-US other people and make an en-US actual change in the world.en-US A mechanical engineering en-US senior, Ms. Hunt hopes for a en-US career providing engineering en-US humanitarian aid to developen-US -en-US ing countries. This year, as en-US president of ERAUs Project en-US Haiti, shes turned her aspiraen-US -en-US tions into action. en-US This will be the ninth year en-US ERAU students from Daytona en-US Beach have built clean drinken-US -en-US ing water filtration systems for en-US Haitian communities. en-US In May, a team of 10 stuen-US -en-US dents will install a different en-US type of solar-powered water en-US purification system they en-US designed and built. It will be en-US placed at a school and orphanen-US-en-US age thaten-US serves 235 children in en-US Gonaives, north of the capital, en-US Port-au-Prince. Dr. Marc en-US Compere, associate professor en-US of Mechanical Engineering, en-US and Dr. Geoffrey Kain, profesen-US-en-US sor of Humanities and Comen-US -en-US munication and director of en-US ERAUs Honors Program, will en-US travel with and advise the stuen-US -en-US dents.en-US Many times our classroom en-US design projects, like building a en-US filtration system, are theoretien-US -en-US cal, Dr. Compere said. This en-US project is hands on. It chalen-US -en-US lenges the students to become en-US practical and resourceful while en-US operating in a dynamic, en-US unstructured and unpredicten-US -en-US able environment. en-US On previous trips to Haiti, en-US the team installed ultrafiltraen-US -en-US tion systems, but they learned en-US last year this type of purificaen-US -en-US tion system was unable to en-US remove all salt, sediment and en-US viruses in villages using well en-US water or river water. The en-US Gonaives site has the same en-US problems, Ms. Hunt said. en-US The teams solution this year en-US is to design a system that uses en-US reverse osmosis a en-US high-pressure pump and ultraen-US -en-US fine, semi-permeable memen-US -en-US branes to remove contamien-US-en-US nants. en-USA-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USsaid.en-US We keep seeing kids comen-US -en-US ing through that have been en-US removed from their homes en-US because of abuse and neglect en-US and abandonment, Ms. Taylor en-US said. Yen-US ou have to have the en-US ability to spend 8-10 hours a en-US month getting to know that en-US child. It is a hugely supported en-US system once the volunteer gets en-US involved.en-US According to the CNCS, en-US Florida in general, and Volusia en-US County in particular, have en-US unique challenges when it en-US comes to generating volunteer en-US participation, including diffien-US-en-US culties with transportation to en-US areas of volunteer interest, en-US which may be located quite far en-US away in a large county like en-US Volusia; higher numbers of en-US retired and elderly residents en-US who may be unable to travel or en-US volunteer; school-age children en-US may have difficulty finding en-US age-appropriate volunteer en-US opportunities; and a high en-US number of non-profit organien-US-en-US zations with paid positions en-US that employ people who are en-US likely to also volunteer. en-US Those reasons, coupled with en-US not knowing where to start or en-US what volunteer opportunities en-US are available close to home, are en-US likely at the root of the proben-US -en-US lem. Whether it is working en-US with children, the elderly, anien-US -en-US mals, crime victims, health en-US organizations, parks, museen-US -en-US ums, churches, veterans or en-US other agencies and groups too en-US plentiful to name, whatever en-US your interest Volusia County en-US has a genuine need for your en-US talents and time, and many of en-US those opportunities are closer en-US to home than one might think.en-US United Way of Volusia and en-US Flagler Counties is the point of en-US contact for most local volunen-US-en-US teer opportunities. The agency en-US matches volunteers with nonen-US -en-US profit community agencies. en-US As the Volunteer Center en-US Coordinator for United Way, en-US Francine Martin said volunen-US -en-US teering, at its core, is helping en-US your fellow man.en-US People feel a sense of en-US urgency to help others less foren-US -en-US tunate than themselves. They en-US want to advocate, support or en-US volunteer to make this world a en-US better place, Ms. Martin said. en-US Whether it is in time of crisis en-US like during Hurricane Irma, a en-US special day of service like Maren-US -en-US tin Luther King Jr. Day, or that en-US they want to teach their chilen-US -en-US dren how to give back to the en-US community or because they en-US have retired and find that they en-US have time to follow their pasen-US -en-US sion. It all comes down to en-US helping their fellow man and en-US volunteering helps fulfill that en-US basic human nature.en-US One group that relies heavien-US -en-US ly on volunteers, and sees a en-US lack of them because it may en-US not be the first that comes to en-US mind, is law enforcement en-US offices, including the sheriffs en-US department, especially for Citen-US -en-US izens On Patrol, said Clifford en-US Wright, director of the proen-US -en-US gram for the Daytona Beach en-US Police Department. en-US CoPs are a group of dedien-US -en-US cated volunteers who donate en-US their time assisting law en-US enforcement by providing en-US numerous services to our felen-US -en-US low citizens, such as assisting en-US with traffic control at vehicle en-US accidents; crowd control at en-US special events; carrying out en-US extra patrols and house watchen-US -en-US es for residents who are out of en-US town for extended periods; en-US fingerprinting children at en-US community events; and en-US patrolling residential and en-US commercial areas which aides en-US in the safety and security of en-US the community, Mr. Wright en-US said. The Citizens on Patrol en-US are volunteers appointed by en-US the chief of police who have en-US completed the designated volen-USen-USunteer application, successfulen-US-en-US ly passed a background check en-US and have a valid drivers en-US license.en-US The Port Orange Police en-US Department has a similar proen-US-en-US gram with Volunteers in Police en-US Service, which also needs volen-US -en-US unteers. The VIPS fulfill an en-US important support function to en-US the POPD by providing unien-US-en-US formed civilian volunteers to en-US serve functions, such as vacaen-US -en-US tion house watch checks, trafen-US -en-US fic control at accidents and en-US city functions. en-US In addition, they provide en-US services like distribution of en-US animal traps, bicycle registraen-US -en-US tion and child fingerprinting. en-US They also provide clerical and en-US courier services for the departen-US -en-US ment, said VIPS Lt. Bruce en-US Whitcomb.en-US We are presently 35 strong en-US but could use an additional en-US 10-15 candidates, Lt. Whiten-US -en-US comb said.en-US If patrolling and police-asen-US -en-US sists arent on a potential volen-US -en-US unteers list of skill sets, area en-US police organizations also have en-US a need for athletes.en-US For residents who particien-US-en-US pated in sports in their high en-US school oen-US r college days, local en-US Police Athletic Leagues rely en-US heavily on volunteers in sports en-US such as karate, cheerleading, en-US gymnastics, wrestling, basketen-US -en-US ball and more. en-US Sometimes, volunteering en-US can mean just sitting and en-US brushing or holding a homeen-US-en-US less pet, which a volunteer of en-US nearly any age or condition en-US can do, said DeLand resident en-US and Journeys End Animal en-US Sanctuary owner Florence en-US Thuot, who has made it her en-US lifes work to save abused, en-US neglected and special-needs en-US animals.en-US In addition to donating food en-US or funds, there are other ways en-US to help for animal lovers seeken-US -en-US ing quality furbaby time, she en-US added.en-US Anyone can volunteer to en-US come and give the animals en-US brushings, or just to sit with en-US them on the couch and pet en-US them, Mrs. Thuot said. With en-US the number of animals we en-US have, and the amount of work en-US to do, we dont have the time en-US to give them all the level of en-US attention they deserve. You en-US can call us and set up a time to en-US come in and spend time with en-US the animals.en-US Perhaps one of the most en-US underserved and overlooked en-US groups in the county is the en-US non-mobile senior population, en-US and the Volusia County Counen-US-en-US cil on Aging fills those gaps en-US and needs.en-US Budget cuts and increased en-US demands for service, along en-US with the required matching $1 en-US in local fund contributions for en-US every $9 of grant funds, means en-US a growing need for charitable en-US contributions via fundraising en-US and philanthropists and volen-US -en-US unteers willing to donate time en-US and services.en-US Generally speaking, a en-US donor is defined as one who en-US gives, donates, or presents en-US something. A philanthropist en-US is one who makes an active en-US effort to pren-US omote human welen-US-en-US fare, said Sarah Gurtis, CEO en-US of the Volusia COA. Based on en-US those definitions, Id say that en-US every person who donates to en-US COA is a philanthropist.en-US A non-profit organization, en-US COAs services include Meal en-US on Wheels, activities, personal en-US care, guardianship, a respite en-US program and community en-US resources to qualifying county en-US seniors. The recipients of these en-US services, as well as those who en-US are on a waiting list, are often en-US the most frail among us, Ms. en-US Gurtis said.en-US Although some funding is en-US received from local, state and en-US federal matches,en-US volunteers en-UShelp bring a brighter future for en-US area children at local Boys and en-US Girls Clubs of Volusia and en-US Flagler counties.en-US Our kids, who do not have en-US very much, are always giving en-US back, said Robin Markus, en-US development director for the en-US Boys & Girls Club of Volusia en-US Flagler Counties. That in en-US itself says a lot.en-US Of the more than 1,500 en-US youth the club served in 2016, en-US 60 percent were from single en-US parent and nontraditional en-US homes; 90 percent received en-US free or reduced lunch; 95 peren-US -en-US cent received academic assisen-US -en-US tance; and 95 percent attended en-US prevention programs, accorden-US-en-US ing to the clubs annual report.en-US The club is comprised of en-US eight clubs spread out across en-US the two-county area, including en-US Edgewater, Harris Saxon, en-US Holly Hill, Lake Helen, en-US DeLand, Ormond Beach, en-US Rymfire and Daytona Beach, en-US which helps eliminate the en-US obstacles of transportation, en-US age and location that often en-US stand in the way of volunteeren-US -en-US ism. services: INCOME TAXES FOR BUSINESS AND INDIVIDUALS, ACCOUNTING, STRATEGIC PLANNING, MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS, DEBT RESTRUCTURING, CONSULTING386.258.3140 | J. Ive never had en-US Wi-Fi. Wanting to acquire Wi-Fi, I signed up for what I thought en-US was a good deal and was told by salesperson it was. I bundled en-US TV, phone and Internet. en-US He asked me what I had been paying and came up with an $8 en-US increase for Internet, which made the monthly charge $128.77. en-US He never told me about a promo for $29 each for phone, TV and en-US Internet and would be $90 a month. This was March 8. On en-US March 15, I received a bill in the mail for $189.87. en-US I called salesperson. Hell take care of it. On March 16, I had en-US payment taken out of my checking for $148. Wrong. Did not get en-US a bill for this amount. Surprised? I called Spectrum. No credit. en-US They dont give credits. Call your bank was their response. en-US I called salesperson. We also have to think en-US about bridges, water, sewer, en-US garbage collection and en-US recycling, electricity and even en-US internet service. Right now, en-US were at an almost adequate en-US stage. Well soon be teetering en-US on inadequate.en-US Maintaining what we have is en-US within the realm of our en-US capabilities, but adding en-US capacity is where we run into en-US trouble. And thats where the en-US really unpopular ideas pop up. en-US Were going to have to approve en-US the half-cent sales tax increase en-US the County Council wants, en-US but, in turn, the council, as en-US well as municipalities, is going en-US to have to increase developen-US -en-US ment impact fees.en-US The increases will have an en-US adverse economic impact, but en-US then so does inadequate en-US infrastructure. Its a difficult en-US balancing act, but one en-US government leaders are en-US elected to perform.en-US Then, of course, there are en-US schools, fire services, police, en-US emergency management and en-US beach services. The extent of en-US concerns that face governen-US -en-US ment, and helping our readers en-US keep up with it all, are en-US mind-bogging at times. But en-US then, thats why I write a en-US business column.en-US ***en-US Were coming out of a slow en-US period business wise, as en-US usually occurs around the en-US Easter holiday. But there was en-US one big move to report. en-US VanTrust, which built the huge en-US distribution center on Clyde en-US Morris Boulevard in Daytona en-US Beach for Braun, wants to en-US build a warehouse complex on en-US the Mason Avenue Extension. en-US The complex would have two en-US buildings, one 263,120 square en-US feet and one 53,700 square en-US feet. It would be next to where en-US a new complex is planned for en-US Costa del Mar and across the en-US road from the Trader Joes en-US distribution center.en-US Thats a lot in a small area, en-US so the county is stepping in to en-US look at the planning and the en-US impact it would have on the en-US existing roadways and more. en-US No word on who VanTrust is en-US building the warehouses for, en-US but its not a company that en-US does anything for nothing.en-US ***en-US One other development en-US went up on the drawing board. en-US A developer wants to build en-US Canterwood Manor, a en-US memory care and congregate en-US living facility, on Dirksen en-US drive, just east of US. 17/92 in en-US DeBary.en-US ***en-US On a final note, Tanger en-US Factory Outlet Center in en-US Daytona Beach is getting BBs en-US Boutique and Uniform en-US Destination. Some en-US of our studies are 12 weeks. en-US Some are one year. Our studies en-US that we have for Alzheimers en-US do involve a study drug. For en-US Alzheimers disease there are a en-US lot of great new things we are en-US exploring in research.en-US But the center is careful with en-US its clients, Ms. Davison said. en-US If sen-US omething happens with en-US somebody ten-US hat becomes serien-US -en-US ous, we stop the study portion en-US immediately, however, they en-US are still looked into medically en-US to make sure everything gets en-US taken care of. Most typical visen-US -en-US its here involve you seeing the en-US doctor. Your health and who en-US you are is more important en-US than anything else.en-US Ms. Davison stressed there en-US are no secrets with the studies. en-US Participants can opt out at any en-US time and all medication used en-US for any of their studies has en-US been declared safe.en-US The medicine that we have en-US now didnt just come put of the en-US blue, it took the research en-US behind it to get where we are en-US now, she said. To move foren-US -en-US ward in medicine, we have to en-US keep looking at these options. en-US What works for one person en-US may not work for another. en-US There is such a wonderful en-US opportunity here not only for en-US themselves but for advancing en-US science, for advancing medien-US-en-US cine.en-US Dr. David McDonald, one of en-US five neurologists with Neurolen-US -en-US ogy Associates, has been there en-US more than 20 years. en-US We try to get studies that en-US hopefully will work on diseasen-US -en-US es that we doen-US nt have good en-US treatments for like Alzheimers en-US dementia, Dr. McDonald said. en-US The meds we have in the en-US studies will hopefully slow en-US down the disease because the en-US meds that are out there dont en-US have the capability of slowing en-US down the disease. As the term implies, en-US umbrella insurance is an added en-US layer of protection over and en-US above homeowners and en-US automobile insurance proden-US -en-US ucts. Therefore, to be eligible en-US for a PUP, you must already en-US have a certain amount of auto en-US and homeowners insurance in en-US place. en-US Heres a simple scenario. en-US Lets say Bobs auto policy en-US covers him for $300,000 in en-US personal liability, and someone en-US brings a lawsuit against him for en-US an accident that was his fault. If en-US the claimant is awarded en-US $500,000, Bobs auto insurance en-US would pay $300,000 and his en-US Umbrella Policy would kick in en-US the additional $200,000. With en-US the PUP, he would not be en-US out-of-pocket the amount (in en-US this case, $200,000) over and en-US above the auto insurance en-US policys limit. en-US Umbrella Policies can be en-US purchased from a property and en-US casualty insurance agent or en-US from a personal line insurance en-US agent. Coverage limits are en-US usually quite high $1 million en-US is the low end of the spectrum en-US and, generally, coverage en-US amounts go up in million-dolen-US -en-US lar increments. The premium en-US cost increases with the en-US coverage amount, as you would en-US expect.en-US If you dont have an automoen-US -en-US bile, or any property, this type en-US of insurance probably isnt a fit en-US for you. However, if you do en-US have a home and vehicle, and en-US you were to lose a large liability en-US lawsuit, it is always possible en-US your wages could be garnished, en-US if you dont have enough en-US money to cover the judgment. en-US Umbrella insurance can also en-US pay for legal defense. Keep in en-US mind that some of your assets en-US can have a level of protection en-USinherently built in. An IRA en-US account or a life insurance en-US policy can have greater en-US protection from a claim than en-US cash in a bank account. en-US Protection varies by state, too. en-US In Florida, for example, en-US homesteaded property carries en-US a greater level of protection en-US from claims.en-US If you are concerned that a en-US liability claim could ravage en-US your lifes savings, added PUP en-US insurance might be a good en-US solution. Or, you may want to en-US work with an attorney and en-US financial planner to restrucen-US -en-US ture your assets to afford the en-US most protection possible. en-US Of course, nothing is en-US bulletproof, but Umbrella en-US insurance, along with good en-US planning, can certainly make en-US you feel less vulnerable should en-US the threat of rain turn into a en-US downpour or even hail!en-US David D. Thats en-US when I found out what the en-US local bankers and the local en-US market and the Realtors were en-US doing. And I am a homebuilden-US -en-US er. I have been building houses en-US since 1980. My professional en-US background is putting people en-US in wonderful homes with peren-US -en-US fect colors wherever they are, en-US which blends into the neighen-US -en-US borhoods. en-US He is familiar with drafting en-US and auto cad systems.en-US The reason why I am still en-US homeless is if you get told no en-US too many times, you become en-US homeless and that is why en-US (homeless) are there, Mr. en-US Lewis said. Every single one en-US of them has been abused by a en-US family member and it has en-US some kind of medication issue en-US with it, because when you get en-US older you get on medications en-US and they affect your mind.en-US He denied having a mental en-US health or substance abuse en-US problem, but admitted he does en-US drink some alcohol. I know a en-US lot of rich people and they en-US have the same addictions, they en-US just hide them better, he said. en-US Mr. Lewis is a big fan of the en-US proposed First Step shelter en-US being proposed by the City of en-US Daytona Beach, saying, I en-US would be the first one there.en-US He had high praise for city en-US officials as well as Volusia en-US County Sheriff Mike Chiten-US -en-US wood and Daytona Beach en-US Police Chief Craig Capri. en-US I think (Chief Capri) en-US knows the area very well, Mr. en-US Lewis said. I think the new en-US sheriff and he had a good team en-US and that is why they are where en-US they are now.en-US He acknowledged homeless en-US people are afraid of other en-US homeless people. To be safe, en-US be your own advocate. Dont en-US invite trouble into where you en-US sleep, he said.en-US The entire reason I come to en-US these meetings is to make sure en-US they (city officials) know you en-US are here, he said. en-US Online communication isnt en-US as effective as face-to-face. The en-US reason he dresses up for meeten-US-en-US ings: I wear a suit because I en-US want to be a lawyer. The best en-US thing to do is to show up for en-US the job that you want, dressed en-US like the ones that are already en-US doing it.en-US Safety is a big issue for him, en-US he said. No one knows when en-US their last day is. I have lost a lot en-US of young people that thought en-US they were going to live a long en-US time. All I want to do is help en-US the homeless to have a safe en-US place to sleep and not have to en-US worry about another homeless en-US person abusing them. en-US Mr. Lewis said he wont turn en-US down work, but he is selective en-US about the type of work he en-US would like to do, with working en-US at First Step being something en-US he is definitely interested in. en-US He gets food stamps and en-US financial assistance from famien-US -en-US ly and friends. en-US The commission meetings en-US also are important to him en-US because he thinks many homeen-US -en-US less dont know what they need en-US and dont know how to get out en-US of being homeless. en-US The very first thing someen-US -en-US body does is judge them on en-US what they wear, their tennis en-US shoes, is it a name brand, is it a en-US cheap brand, too many wrinen-US -en-US kles, he saiden-US They judge en-US every single thing even though en-US they say they dont.en-US He also would like to see an en-US improved bus system along en-US with the new shelter, so the en-US homeless could have better en-US access to job opportunities, en-US Mr. Lewis said. You can stick en-US them somewhere but then en-US they cant do anything.en-US As far as homeless people en-US not wanting to go to the shelen-US-en-US ter, he said, I have had lots of en-US friends pass away on the street en-US by using too many drugs. You en-US still need help, but you have to en-US help yourself. They do want en-US help, they cant stay focused. en-US You have to have good ideas to en-US help people and have follow en-US through, because if it is a good en-USidea, it will have follow en-US through.en-US Walk in my shoes and see if en-US you can do it, he said. I am a en-US very good person. en-US A typical day consists of en-US picking up litter in his travels en-US or helping friends as he can.en-US You have to make your suren-US -en-US roundings look great for you en-US and everybody else, he said. en-US When asked what he wanted en-US people to know about him, he en-US said, then-US at I am real. en-US Mr. Lewis has a mailing en-US address at Halifax Urban Minen-US -en-US istries, which also provides en-US meals. He has a new drivers en-US license, but uses his bike for en-US transportation (and keeps his en-US belongings with his bike). en-USGardener to discuss en-US toxic plantsen-USSue Valez, a master gardener en-US with the Volusia County en-US Extension Service, will discuss en-US toxic plants in the home and en-US yard at 10 a.m. Wednesday, en-US April 11, at the Ormond Beach en-US Regional Library, 30 S. en-USB-4 Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach/Holly Hill en-USEen-USarlier this week a special en-US event took place; Florida en-US Day Pascua or Feast of en-US Flowers Day. en-USIt is the day Ponce de Leon en-US landed in Florida in search of en-US the Fountain of Youth, but, en-US instead, he changed its food en-US history forever. The Timucua en-US Indians inhabited the coasts of en-US Florida at that time and they en-US enjoyed the local bounty of en-US seafood, bear, deer, turkey and en-US alligators. The Spanish called en-US them dragons. en-US Their most popular and en-US plentiful source of food must en-US have been oysters, because of en-US the number of oyster shell en-US mounds found along the coast en-US with many more than 40 feet en-US high. Oysters were so plentiful en-US the state used ground oyster en-US shells to build the highway en-US system. en-US Cooking was done over an en-US open fire that had crisscrossed en-US strips of wood resembling a en-US grill. They were called en-US Barbacoa. Meats and fish were en-US smoked on the wooden grills. en-US This cooking technique en-US developed over the years to be en-US called BBQ. Caribbean pirates en-US used the Barbacoa to cook en-US their food when on land; oh, en-US and drink their rum yo-ho, en-US yo-ho! Some historians en-US believe that is where the term en-US Buccaneers came from. en-US Now what about the en-US Spanish and food? It all en-US started when Columbus first en-US came to the New World and en-US introduced foods from Spain en-US and Europe. He also gathered en-US foods from local natives in the en-US Caribbean as well as from en-US Cuba. All this bounty was en-US brought to Florida with Ponce en-US De Leon. en-US Local natives grew potatoes, en-US corn, melons, a type of wild en-US celery, and onions. Are you en-US ready? The Spanish introen-US -en-US duced pigs, goats, lamb, chicken-US-en-US ens, horses, and beef cattle. en-US Thats not all. They also en-US brought olive oil, wine, en-US cheese, tomatoes, peppers, en-US lemons, oranges, peaches, en-US basil, oregano and thyme. The en-US Spanish introduced wheat en-US bread to Florida. Since wheat en-US couldnt grow here, they en-US copied the local native corn en-US fritters, which eventually en-US became known as hushpupen-US -en-US pies. en-US While the Spanish explored en-US Florida, the soldiers would eat en-US oranges they had brought with en-US them spitting out the seeds as en-US they walked. Throughout the en-US state there are pockets of sour en-US orange trees growing, left over en-US from the Spanish soldiers. en-US Maybe you have one in your en-US yard. We do!en-US They also turned the cattle en-US loose to roam the state. en-US Florida is the second largest en-US producer of cattle in the U.S. en-US During the late 1700s, cattle en-US ranching took root. Men of en-US Scottish decent were recruited en-US from Georgia and South Caroen-US-en-US lina to find the cattle. They en-US were not called cowboys, but en-US cow herders. They were also en-US called Florida Crackers, which en-US is a Scottish term for someone en-US who likes to play jokes and be en-US rowdy.en-US Florida has so much food en-US history and much of it is due en-US to the Spanish. Here is a en-US simple seafood chowder en-US recipe the Spanish and early en-US Florida settlers made. It is en-US very, very good and healthy, en-US too.en-USFlorida Chowderen-USServings 6-8en-US Ingredientsen-US 1 pound hard shell clams, in en-US the shell place right into the en-US pot en-US Several types of seafood; en-US whatever you can afford en-US Two filets of catfish, farm en-US raised, 1/2 pound shrimp in en-US the shell, 1/en-US 2 pound raw en-US oysters en-US 2 ounces salt pork, minced en-US (optional)en-US 1 tablespoon olive oilen-US 2 teaspoons minced thymeen-US 1 teaspoon dried basilen-US 1teaspoon dried oreganoen-US 3 cloves garlic, minceden-US 1 bay leafen-US 1 red bell pepper, minceden-US 1 large red onion, minceden-US 3 plum tomatoes, choppeden-US 3 cups fish or chicken stock en-US store-bought, add enough en-US liquid to cover product if en-USneededen-US 1 pound B-Red potatoes, en-US peeled and cut in halfen-US The early Floridians liked en-US hot peppers. He will en-US attend Clemson University in the fall.en-USSportsen-USFrom page B7 en-USI en-USanswer fishing questions for en-US new arrivals on a weekly en-US basis. en-USMost are repetitive, but I en-US dont mind. When I began en-US this column over 11 years en-US ago, it was my intention to try en-US and help folks catch more en-US fish. Often I am told the en-US pilgrims arent catching much en-US of anything. Well, if that is en-US true of you, your time has en-US come.en-US The swarming hoards of en-US bluefish are now in the surf en-US and the rivers and will hit en-US most anything. To begin en-US with, bluefish are seldom en-US blue, but instead are olive, en-US shading to white below. They en-US have a forked tail and a en-US mouth full of nasty teeth. en-US If getting accustomed to en-US Florida fishing has you en-US befuddled, you are part of a en-US very large group. In 1969, not en-US long after I first arrived here, en-US I was walking on the Sunglow en-US Pier when a kindly gentleman en-US asked if I wanted the nice en-US bluefish he had just reeled up. en-US I did and when I lipped it the en-US way you might a largemouth en-US bass the blue chomped down en-US on my finger. I gave it a sling en-US and the blood flew. The en-US wound was nearly large en-US enough for stitches. That was en-US my first experience with en-US bluefish and a valuable lesson en-US learned. en-US I found out bluefish en-US migrate along our coast each en-US spring and fall in big numen-US -en-US bers while hunting in packs en-US not unlike wolves. Over the en-US years, I have caught them by en-US the thousands and have loved en-US every minute of it. Not many en-US fish are as easy to catch as the en-US chopper blues. They will bite en-US shrimp (alive or dead), fish, en-US shellfish or most any type of en-US lure. en-US If you want to catch them en-US on a pier or in the surf, you en-US cant do better than a en-US Seahawk type lure. That en-US heavy little pencil shaped bait en-US is easy to cast great distances en-US and is fairly inexpensive. en-US There are many varieties of en-US that clothespin type lure, but en-US it was actually invented right en-US here. en-US Back in the 1940s, lure en-US maker Richard Porter, who en-US was a regular on the Daytona en-US Pier, began to experiment en-US with a weighted lure that en-US would stay down on the en-US retrieve from such a high en-US platform. A lead-filled en-US chrome tube did the job and en-US a new bait was born. Soon the en-US other pier and surf fishermen en-US wanted one and he was in en-US business. I dont know for en-US sure, but I would guess the en-US bluefish had a lot to do with en-US that invention. en-US At this time of year, watch en-US the waves, birds and the en-US dolphins to find the blues. en-US When the water is clear, you en-US can see them in each breaken-US -en-US ing wave. At times they can en-US be very thick in numbers. en-US While bluefish are not the en-US most delicious fish in the en-US ocean, they are edible. Keep en-US them fresh and, if at all en-US possible, eat them the same en-US day they are caught. They are en-US easy to filet and, when you en-US are cleaning them, take a few en-US seconds to cut out the dark en-US streak. I like to give mine a en-US buttermilk bath before frying en-US them in crushed corn flakes en-US that may have overstayed en-US their welcome. Serve them up en-US with fresh prepared horseen-US -en-US radish and you will have en-US some pretty tasty eats.en-US Bluefish make the best en-US smoked fish around and each en-US spring they are highly prized en-US for that. Years ago, my cousin en-US Randy and I would catch 50 en-US or 60 in the surf and give a en-US fellow half to prepare them en-US for us. It didnt take too long en-US for us to invest in our own en-US smoker. Now, each spring I en-US am on the beach to gather en-US some to smoke. en-US Blues are a lot of fun to en-US catch, too, but be sure and rig en-US with a steel leader. They put en-US up a great fight considering en-US ours average around two en-US pounds. I once caught an en-US 8-pounder in Sebastian Inlet en-US and a 6-pounder in Matanzas en-US Inlet, but those are exceptionen-US -en-US al. This spring dont miss the en-US action.
