OIL ACTIVITIES IN FLORIDA

Exploratory activities in Florida during 1956 continued the down-

ward trend set the previous year. In 1954, 31 wells were completed, two

of which were oil producers. In 1955, only 27 wells were completed, all dry

and abandoned. There was a total of 13 dry holes drilled in 1956, eleven of

which were in West Florida. This concentration of drilling activity in the

Panhandle reflected an interest in the potentialities of the Lower Cretaceous

arising from the continued developments at Citronelle Field, Mobile County,

Alabama. Two of the 1956 completions were begun in 1955, and one additional

well begun in 1956 was drilling on January 1, 1957. A summary of test

drilling data and crude oil production is on page 6.


GEOPHYSICAL AND CORE TESTING

Nineteen counties and an offshore area (adjacent to two adjoining

coastal counties) were prospected by geophysical methods or core drilling

in 1956. Southeastern and southern Florida received the greatest emphasis

as measured in crew weeks of work. Panhandle Florida was also substantially








prospected, while central and northern Florida received no exploratory

attention.

The Tallahassee Scout Check reported that six major oil companies

and one unknown company put 12 geophysical and core drill crews in

Florida for a total of 193 weeks during 1956. The crew week breakdown

for this total of 193 weeks is: seismograph 9; core drill 52; refraction 71;

reflection 53, two of which were beyond the 10-mile limit adjacent to

Franklin and Wakulla counties; and, renistivity 8.


SUNNILAND FIELD

Through 1956, Sunniland Field, Collier County, has yielded 4,797, 721

barrels of crude oil since the discovery date, September 26, 1943. From

a total of 13 producing wells, Sunniland Field yielded an annual increase

of oil through 1951. The annual total has declined since 1952, with only

eleven wells producing at this time. From Sunniland Field, near the

west coast the crude oil is transported by tank trucks across the peninsula

to Port Everglades on the east coast. From Port Everglades, tankers move

it to refineries in northeastern United States.
