Seismograph work ////// Core drill E Gravity FLORIDA Seel In Mile. IoWA ID i, Mautt i OIL ACTIVITIES IN FLORIDA During 1955 By Herman Gunter Florida Geological Survey Tallahassee During 1955 there were 27 wells completed in Florida as tests for oil or gas. Of these, 5 tests were actually begun late in 1954 and completed early in 1955. In 1954 there were 24 tests completed as dry Holes and two wells as small oil producers, as compared with 22 tests begun and completed in 1955 as dry holes and none as producers. On SJanuary 1, 1956, there were three tests drilling. For a summary of activities see page 11. I On the whole, in 1955, interest in the oil or gas potentials of SFlorida compare favorably with that of 1954. Although no discoveries of oil were made, developments at Citronelle, Alabama, bordering Escambia Q County in extreme western Florida, gave impetus to increased interest in That area, and an offshore test in Florida Bay south of Cape Sable held the interest in southern Florida. This test, however, was abandoned as a dry hole November 23, 1955, at a depth of 12,631 feet. FORTY-MILE BEND FIELD ABANDONED A disappointing development in 1955 was the abandonment of the two small wells in the Forty-Mile Bend Field. This field was discovered February 6, 1954, when the No. 1 Wiseheart-State Board of Education well was completed at a total depth of 11, 557 feet, with an initial production of 76 barrels of 21. 2 API gravity oil from the Sunniland zone at 11322-11339 feet. A second producer in this field was the No. 1 State of Florida-Lease 340 well about 3 miles east from the discovery well. This was completed April 5, 1954, at a total depth of 11352 feet and the Sunniland producing zone was at 11340-11352 feet. The initial production was 112 barrels per day of 21. 7 gravity oil. The last production from this field was reported September 1955. The total production is recorded as 32, 888 barrels. GEOPHYSICAL AND CORE TESTING Considerable seismograph, gravity and core drill exploratory work was done in Florida during 1955, particularly in the southern peninsular portion and the panhandle westward from the Ochlocknee River. The accompanying outline map of the State gives the counties and offshore area in which such work was performed. The Tallahassee Scout Check has furnished the information that a total of 361 crew weeks were worked in Florida in 1955. Of this total 98 crew weeks were recorded as core drill. 2. The greater portion of the activity in Florida is being carried on directly by or through the participation of the various major companies long interested in the State. Because of the uniformly disappointing results of the tests drilled activity during the latter part of the year lessened and some of the exploratory equipment was removed from the state. SUNNILAND FIELD The Sunniland Field continued production from 11 wells, all of which are now being pumped. The total for 1955 was 483,365 barrels, or an average of approximately 1324 barrels per day, as compared to 526, 222 barrels in 1954, or an average of about 1442 barrels per day in 1954, being a reduction of 118 barrels per day. The cumulative production from this field since September 1943, its discovery date, to January 1, 1956, totals 4, 317, 340 barrels. The crude oil is moved by tank trucks from the field to Port Everglades just south of Fort Lauderdale where tankers transport it to the refinery. The total production of oil from Florida for the year 1955 is as follows: Sunniland Field (11 wells) 483,365 Forty-Mile Bend Field (2 wells,9 months) 11, 289 494,654 Barrels T n J 7 Permits to drill obtained in 1954, -- tests completed in 1955 as dry holes 5 / ._\ + Wells completed in 1955 as dry holes 22 /---- i F As c , x Locations abandoned 2 7 ! o Permits obtained in 1955, tests not ---- -- completed January 1, 1956 3 Ti . ^ j,---1 ,was .. .........
