OIL ACTIVITIES IN FLORIDA During 1954 By Herman Gunter Florida Geological Survey Tallahassee Exploration for oil and gas in Florida during 1954 continued at about the same rate as for 1953, with interest intensified to a large degree by the discovery of a new oil field in Florida. A summary of the year's activities is found on page 13. FLORIDA HAS A SECOND OIL FIELD '"\I The year 1954 recorded another oil field for Florida - The Forty-Mile Bend Field, about 42 miles west of Miami on the / Tamiami Trail. The Commonwealth Oil Company, et al., No. 1 M. B. Wiseheart-State Board of Education well, was completed February 6, 1954, with an initial production of 76 barrels of oil per day with gravity of 21. 2 API at 60*. The total depth of this well is 11,557 feet and the producing zone is the Sunniland, at a depth of 11, 322-11, 339 feet. Its total production was 10, 673 barrels of oil, or an average of about 32 barrels per day. A second producer was brought in by the Gulf Oil Corporation the No. 1 State of Florida Lease 340 well, located about three miles east from the discovery well. This was completed April 5, 1954, at a total depth of 11,352 feet. The producing zone, the Sunniland, is from 11,340 to 11,352 feet. The initial production was 112 barrels of oil per day, gravity 21. 7 API at 600. During 1954 this well produced 10, 819 barrels of oil, or an average of about 40 barrels per day. GEOPHYSICAL AND CORE TESTING About all of the southern half of Florida was prospected by seismograph and a portion of this area was also core drilled. The Panhandle section was also heavily prospected, the core drilling program being about as large as the geophysical program. No work was done in counties east of Gadsden and north of Citrus. The Tallahassee Scout Check reports that 429 crew weeks were spent in seismograph work and 220 crew weeks in core drill work during 1954. Two crew weeks of gravity work was done in Citrus County. Included in the geophysical work were 68 crew weeks spent on submerged lands. The Florida Bay area in Dade and Monroe counties and the area offshore from Sarasota County to Franklin County were covered. Eleven oil companies were prospecting the State and four were interested in offshore testing. SUNNILAND FIELD The Sunniland Field continued to produce oil during 1954 at about the same rate as for 1953. The last flowing well was placed on pump in June, 1953, and in August, 1954, the No. 4 Gulf Coast Realty Corporation well was plugged because of depletion, making a total of eleven wells all on pump in the Sunniland Field. The cumulative production from this field since September, 1943, its discovery date, to January 1, 1955, totaled 3, 833, 975 barrels. The crude oil is moved by tank trucks from the field to Port Everglades just south of Ft. Lauderdale where tankers take it to the refinery. The total production of oil from the Sunniland Field and the Forty-Mile Bend Field for 1954 amounts to 3,855,574 barrels.
