FLORIDA ~r'I IIjj JIJJLJJJ ~I JJi~8 - GEOLOGICAL 19.53 T O (I],ni ] cja_..) P0r18 0iJL }])II SURVEY U[f jil gr1lj j}1 ) BY HERMAN GUNTER DIRECTOR TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA JANUARY 1, 1954 COUNTIES AND OFF-SHORE AREAS WHERE GEOPHYSICAL EXPLORATION WAS CARRIED ON DURING 1953 P <9 - C V o " FLORIDA SCALE -4S0 4 MILES I -J, OIL EXPLORATION ACTIVITIES IN FLORIDA During 1953 By Herman Gunter, Director Florida Geological Survey Tallahassee The search for oil or gas in Florida during 1953 has topped the exploratory activities of any previous year. The number of completions exceeded those of 1952 by an increase of 220 per cent; the number in 1952 was 10, the number in 1953 was 32. The discovery of the Pollard Field in Escambia County, Alabama, early in 1952, continued to intensify the interest in activities in northwestern Florida, while the "shows" of oil in the deep tests of southern Florida stimulated activity there, and also with the settle. ment of ownership of offshore tidelands there came renewed activities in that type of exploration. No new field was discovered. In peninsular Florida, however, significant shows of oil have been encountered in at least four tests as follows: 1. The Commonwealth Oil Company et al., M. B. Wiseheart - State Board of Education No. 1, about 42 miles west of Miami on the Tamiami Trail, has given such encouraging drill stem tests that pumping equipment is being in- stalled. This well may prove to be a discovery well in a new field. The productive zone has been determined as the upper portion of the locally termed Sunniland lime. Another well was spudded December 16, 1953, about 4 miles east of this well, on the Tamiami Trail, by the Gulf Oil Corporation, which should give additional information on the possibilities of the area. 2. The Sinclair Oil and Gas Company's H. R. Williams No. 1 test on Key Largo, Monroe County (extreme southern Florida), is reported to have encountered saturated lime in the Sunniland horizon at approximately a depth of 9,974-10,002 feet. The well was decisively tested, drilled to a total depth of 11,968 feet and abandoned. Humble Oil and Refining Company's W. E. Kirchhoff, Jr. et ux. No. 1, about 6 1/2 miles south of Fort Myers, Lee County, recorded a number of cores with oil stains and bleeding oil from depths between 5,488 feet to 12,440 feet. After numbers of drill stem tests and drilling to a total depth of 12,877 feet, the well was abandoned as dry September 9, 1953. 4. Gulf Oil Corporation's Consolidated Naval Stores Company No. 1, about 11 miles southeast of Fort Myers, Lee County, also recorded a number of shows of dead oil, oil stains and bleeding cores from 9,595 feet to 11,774 feet. The well was abandoned as dry at a total depth of 12,865 feet. In the panhandle portion of Florida from the Apalachicola River west- ward there were 26 tests completed in 1953. This exceptional activity in western Florida proved disappointing in that not one of the completed tests recorded any shows of oil or gas. The deepest of these tests was 7,512 feet in Escambia County. All others range from 3,812 feet in Jackson County to 7,000 feet in Santa Rosa County, the latter being the second deepest in the area during 1953. OFFSHORE ACTIVITY Another point of particular interest is the offshore drilling begun in Florida during 1953. The Gulf Oil Corporation on December 1, 1953, spudded their No. 1 State of Florida Lease No. 833 well in southern Santa Rosa County. This first offshore test was actually directional drilling, the rig being located on shore, but the completed hole to terminate at a specified distance from shore. It is anticipated that there will be more offshore drilling since the recent decision on the tidelands ownership. Geophysical exploration in Florida reached an all time high during 1953. The accompanying map indicates the 30 counties in which seismic, gravity meter, core drill, and offshore explorations were carried on. It indicates that approximately the southern half of the Peninsula, western Florida and certain offshore areas were actively prospected, while in the central and northern portions of the State no activity, either geophysical pros- pecting or test drilling, was recorded during the year. According to records at hand, in 1952 there were 23 crews operating for 486 1/2 crew weeks, and in 1953 there were 30 crews operating 700 crew weeks, an increase of 30.4 per cent in crews and 44.0 per cent in crew weeks over the previous year. The year 1946 has held the high score with a total of 28 crews and 606 crew weeks, but now 1953 takes first place over all previous years in this type of exploratory work. SUNNILAND FIELD The Sunniland Field continued to produce oil during 1953 at about the same rate as for 1952. The total from the 12 wells was 541,284 barrels as compared to a total of 591,855 barrels in 1952. The cumulative production from this field since September, 1943, its discovery date, to January 1, 1954, totaled 3,307,753 barrels. The crude oil is moved by tank trucks from the field to Port Everglades just south of Ft. Lauderdale where tankers take it to the refinery. For detailed data on production see Table 1, next page.
