Following the discovery of oil at Pollard, Alabama, in the A. W. Moye No. 1 well by the Humble Oil and Refining Company, January 27, 1952, renewed leasing play began in western Florida from Escambia County east- ward to the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers. All oil tests drilled within this area unfortunately were dry and abandoned. In peninsular Florida geophysical exploration received added impetus through refinements in methods of seismic exploration. Because of these developments, geophysical activity was greatly accelerated, actually reaching during the year record heights. This followed a period of discouraging inactivity. As an indication of how widespread geophysical work extended, the record indicates that seismograph or core drill crews were active in twenty-eight of Florida's sixty-seven counties. The accompanying map outlines the counties in which seismic and core drill work was carried on. The year 1945 is so far the record year of geophysical exploration in Florida. According to records at hand, fifty-four crews operated in the State for a total of 1469 crew weeks during the year. The second highest number of crew weeks was accumulated in 1946, with twenty- eight crews operating, putting in a total of 606 weeks. The years 1917, 1948, 1949, 1950, and 1951 witnessed a gradual reduction of crews. Only five operated in 1951. With the discovery of oil at Pollard, Alabama, in 1 Suwannee County Humble Oil and Refining Company L. C. Mercer, et ux No. 1, (Permit #139 approved June 17, 1952, but test was not drilled. Footage drilled in 1952 54,901 feet. Details on Exploratory Activities in 1952 During 1952, test wells were drilled in seven counties: Collier, Escambia, Jackson, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Suwannee and Walton. Three tests were continued in Pinellas County. For details on these activities see tables on pages six through seventeen.
