Three wells begun late in 1949 were completed early in 1950 and one well begun in 1945, on which progress has been slow, re- mained active throughout the year. Only nine permits for drilling new wells were issued in 1950. Of these, eight were completed and abandoned as dry holes and one, namely, R. E. Skinner's J. A. Boyd, Block 10, No. 1, in Pinellas County, was drilling at the end of the year. The total activity for 1950 included three completions, the permits for which were issued in 1949, and eight completions, the permits for which were issued in 1950, and two wells drilling, one permit issued in 1945, the other in 1950. Summary: 11 wells completed in 1950 All dry and abandoned 2 wells drilling on December 31, 1950, one of which was begun May 2, 1945. Footage drilled in 1950 68,834 feet. Sunniland Area Collier County The Humble Oil and Refining Company discontinued all developmental drilling in the Sunniland Field, nd in the area surrounding that field, after the completion, as dry and abandoned, of the Gulf Coast Realties Corpo- ration No.17 well, June 14, 1950. This decrease of activities seems to indicate that the Sunniland Field has been outlined sufficiently for the present. Of the twenty wells that have been drilled in the Sunniland Field, thirteen were successfully completed as producing wells, four others had encouraging oil shows but attempts to bring them in failed, and three proved dry. One location, the Gulf Coast Realties Corporation No. 3, one mile east of the discovery well, was never drilled and the location abandoned. In the vicinity of the Sunniland Field, west and northwest from it, four prospect areas have been drilled in an attempt either to extend the Sunniland Field or to make additional discoveries, as follows: West Sunniland Prospect 2 tests Northwest Sunniland Prospect 1 test Southwest Lake Trafford Prospect 2 tests West Harker Prospect 3 tests In the Sunniland Field and the nearby prospects in Collier County the Humble Oil and Refining Company has completed a total of 28 wells. The footage drilled in the Sunniland Field proper totals 234,569 feet and in the four prospect areas 78,748 feet, the cumulative total of 313,317 feet drilled in the immediate Sunniland region, as average of 11,190 feet for each well. See Figure 1 (page 4) for specific location of all of these wells and tables on pages 5 through 12 for additional details. SUNNILAND OIL FIELD AND NEA RBY PROSPECTS COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA R 97 F. REGULATORY MEASURES The Legislature of 1945 passed an Act to regulate and control the drilling and development of oil and gas in Florida, and all wells drilled since have been constructed under the provisions of this Act. One provision of the law requires that samples of the cuttings and of the cores, the driller's and electrical logs, and other records, shall be sent to the Florida Geological Survey. These records are in the Survey offices and are open for reference to any who may wish to study the open files of cuttings, cores, logs and related data. When an operator so requests, however, data are held in a confidential file for a stated period, otherwise the entire well library is available for reference. This well library file of cuttings and cores contains samples from not only the tests drilled for oil or gas, but also of wells drilled in every portion of the State for water. We acknowledge our indebtedness to the water well contractors and drillers of Florida for their cooperation and readiness to furnish voluntarily such complete information on the wells they drilled. These records have enabled the Geological Survey to determine in- formation of the subsurface structure and stratigraphy which otherwise would not be obtainable. DETAILED ACTIVITIES FOR 1950 During 1950 test wells were drilled in ten counties Baker, Collier, Columbia, Escambia, Levy, Monroe, Pinellas, Suvannee, Taylor and Walton - and details on these are set forth alphabetically by County in the tables that follow. All of these test wells were completed and abandoned during the year, except the two in Pinellas County. (See pages 16-25) PROSPECTS FOR 1951 As an insurance against anticipated emergency requirements the petroleum industry will expand its efforts to increase productive capacity during 1951. Oil is a vital necessity during normal times and is crucial when needed for military requirements. It is possible that increased demand for petroleum will be reflected in prospecting in Florida during the coming year. PRODUCTION The production of oil during 1950 totaled 486,021 barrels compared with 441,720 barrels for 1949, or an increase of 44,301 barrels. The total cumulative production of oil from the Sunniland Field from the discovery date, September 26, 1943P to December 31, 1950, inclusive, totals 1,578,571 barrels. The crude oil is shipped by tank truck to Port Everglades at Fort Lauderdale for shipment elsewhere for refining. Table No. 1, on the following page, gives the monthly, yearly and cumulative production since the discovery of oil in the Sunniland Field. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Survey would be remiss if it did not acknowledge its appreciation of the uniform and generous cooperation of all the representatives of the oil companies operating in Florida, the drilling contractors, independent operators, and other individuals. Without this splendid and wholehearted response the efforts of the Geological Survey would have been far less effective and our work much more difficult.
