THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF TRINIDAD
AND TOBAGO.

Publication No. 267.
A Royal Cedula to Diego Lopez de Escobar, Governor of
Trinidad.
Source :-British Museum. Additional Mss. 36326.

Translated from the Spanish.
MADRID,
17th September, 1640.
THE KING-Don Diego Lopez de Escobar, My Governor
and Captain General of the Island of Trinidad and
Province of Guayana.
By my Cedula of 31st July of 1640, you were commanded
not to leave your government until your successor arrived
who is Don Martin de Mendoca whom I have commissioned
to erect fortifications and dislodge the enemy from the places
he occupies in those parts. To him I have granted the
government after you have completed your term or before
if you wish to leave as is explained by the dispatches
now sent.
It is my wish that you do not leave this government to
the said Don Marcin until he shall first have complied with
the conditions stated in the cedula which I am sending with
him. In accordance with the views and opinions of my
Council of War of the Indies upon the affairs which concern
Don Martin it is decided to order as I do now order, that
Don Martin as soon as he enters the Island shall begin and
proceed with the pacification of the Indians and the defence
of the settlements. When this is completed you may depart
at the end of your term or before as I have approved. If he
find need of your assistance in doing this before taking up
his government, you should give all help and assistance
which he seeks and requires as ordered by my Cedula of
12th July, 1640.
I, THE KING.
By order of the King, Our Lord.
GABRIEL DE OCANA Y ALARCON.
Madrid,
17th September, 1640.
