20th February, 1630.
The King has been informed that many persons of the
portuguese race have gone to the Island of Trinidad without
his licence and that the Govcnors have given them
encomiendas and allowed tlhm to settle there. This has
caused difficulties and troubles have arisen between these
people and the Spaniards.
The King thereupon orders that no encomiendas are to be
allowed to persons of the portrgucec race Io arc there witLout
his licence. Such persons must forthwith ec required to
leave or be ejected by force.
Similar instructions have Leen sent to the Islands of
Porto Rico and San Domingo.
