I I

THE TRINIDAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

Publication No. 172.

Report from Captain Juan Calvo to the Governor of Margarita.

Source :-British Museum. Additional Mss. 36321.

Published by the courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum.
Translatedfrom the Spanish.

SAN JOSEF, TRINIDAD,
I6th July, 1684.

I have to notify Your Lordship that on the I2th of this
month by the grace of God, I arrived at the port of this
Island of Trinidad in safety with the men and munitions
in my charge. These I have handed over to the Alcaldes
of this Island who, I understand, have written at length
to Your Lordship.
According to the news which has been given to me by the
Alcaldes, the enemy which invaded the town and country
of Guayana, have retired from that place and fort and
proceeded to one of the mouths of the River Orinoco where
they are making a fort and that they have sent four pirogues
with Frenchmen up the river.
In this fort the Frenchmen have imprisoned the Governor
of this Province, the soldiers and the inhabitants. There
is no other news but this.

May God preserve Your Lordship many years.

JUAN CALVO,
Trinidad,
I6th July, 1684.
