THE TRINIDAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

Publication No. 99.

The Council of the Indies to the AIing.
i5th March 1611. Madrid.

Source : Additional MSS. 36319. British Museum. Published
by courtesy of the Trustees of the British Museum. Translated
from the Spanish.

Summary.-The Council of the Indies refers to the agreement
made with Gonzalo Ximinez de Quesada which was signed
in 1571: and also to the agreement made with Antonio
de Berrio and which was confirmed by the King on 3oth
September, 1586.

The Council reports that 70,000 ducats were lent from
the Royal Treasury to the expedition which left in 1596 under
Domingo de Vera to go to the conquest of Trinidad and
Guayana ; and that the greater part is still owing to the
Royal Treasury.

The Council also states that Don Fernando de Berrio
has given no account of what he has done and that he lives
lawlessly, permits offences without punishment and trades
with the enemy.

The Council recommends that a residencia be ordered
upon Don Fernando de Berrio and that the expenses be
recovered from those found to be in the wrong.
