A letter from Francis Sampson to his brother John Sampson.

6th June, 1666, from Nevis.

Source :-Calendar of State Papers, Colonial, West India
and America.

Summary.
He states that the ship from Jamaica that took Tobago
was commanded by Captain Steadman and was later taken
by a French vessel of 36 guns off Guadeloupe.
The Frenchman had 400 men while Steadman had
but Ioo ; he was becalmed and unable to escape so he ran
the enemy aboard and disputed for two hours on deck
They were at last overcome and the most part slain.
