behavior of volunteer sunflower plants which came up after int'-ouc-
tions were harvested on 30 July suggest that late plantings on or
about that date will produce a low growth and seed yield suitable to
combine harvest. page 43.

Annual Report 1957. V.N. Schroder, H.C. Harris, and R.L. Gilman.
Sunflower, tobacco, and St. Augustinegrass were grown in nutrient
solution. Organic acids in the citric acid cycle were studied, p. 5L

Annual Report 1964. G.B. Killinger.. Sunflower introductions of 40
USDA-PIs hold some promise as a seed crop for bird seed and industrial
purposes. Dwarf types and Minnesota varieties Arrowhead and Mennonite
may facilitate harvesting of the seed by a combine, page 65.

Annual Report 1965. G.B. Killinger. Forty USDA-PIs and 2 commercial'
sunflower cultivars planted in April developed large seedheads. -ow-
ever, diseases almost eliminated the seed crop before harvest. The
same varieties planted in late August matured a full seed crop by mid-
November with no disease, and the plants were mostly under 7 feet in
height. page 66.

Annual Report 1966. G.B. Killinger. Sunflower introductions from USDA
and commercial varieties appear to be freer from disease when planted
between 15 August and I September in north Florida than when planted
in early spring. Late summer plantings mature seed from 20 October
to 20 November. There is a large market for sunflowerseed as bird feed.

Annual Report 1967. G.B. Killinger. Early August sunflower planting
yielded from 650-2200 Ibs/acre. Major late summer problems are mil-
dew and corn earworm. Insecticidal control is necessary.' page 57.

Annual Report 1968. Sunflower will produce a satisfactory yield when
planted between 1-15 August with a minimum of disease, whereas April
and May plantings are extremely susceptible to disease. In a repli-

cated cooperative USDA test, 17 varieties and breeding lines
produced from 715 to 1825 Ibs/acre of mature seed. Manchurian
and Vostok were the highest yielding commercial varieties. page 37.

Annual Report 1969. G.B. Killinger, G.M. Prine, and F.T. Boyd.
Sunflower was planted in a regional test on Jonesville sandy
loam in March and July. Twenty-four varieties and breeding lines
were harvested with yields of 280 to 1670 Ibs/acre. A severe
drought in April and excessive bird damage in June accounted
for the low yields. page 52.

Annual Report 1970. G.B. Killinger. A replicated regional
sunflower test planted 20 July on Jonesville sandy loam died
from lack of rainfall in late August and September before
maturity. page 52.

Annual Report 1971. G.B. Killinger. A replicated sunflower
test NK-HO-I, Peredovik, and Krasnodarets yielded 2550, 2420,
and 2360 pounds per acre, respectively. page 53. Planted I Feb.

Annual Report 1972. G.B. Killinger. Sunflower varieties planted
7 February 1972 in 4-replicated test yielded 1940, 3130, 2150,
3420, and 3880 pounds per acre of seed for Krasnadorets, Record,
Peredovik, NK 101, and HS52, respectively. Three irrigations
of 0.75 inches per acre were applied in April and May. page 55.

Annual Report 1973. G.B. Killinger. Sunflower can be success-
fully grown in north-central Florida as a late winter or early
spring crop if irrigation water is available. Varieties NK-HO-I
Peredovik, RomanSun HS-52, Krashodarets, and Record yielded 3340,
3320, 2850, 2635, and 2260 pounds per acre. Two irrigations of
one inch per acre each were required in April and May for the
16 February 1973 crop. page 73.

Annual Report 1974. G.B. Killinger. Sunflower cultivars de-
veloped in Russia and Romania for high oil content produced
seed yields of 3250 to 4390 pounds of seed per acre when plaited
on II February 1974 and harvested in late May. page 103.
