FOREWORD

The ever increasing utilization of audio-visual teaching

aids is another step in providing effective industrial

education instruction.

The rapid growth of industry, tremendous expansion, and

new occupational opportunities dictate that industrial

education teachers must utilize any and all current methods

and devices at their disposal to meet the ever increasing

educational and industrial labor market demands.

This guide was prepared for industrial education instructors,

i .curriculum personnel, and administrators as a composite

source of audio-visual aids. It should save time and pro-

vide immediate information about the aids.
-5'

Periodically, this guide will be updated to include new

audio-visual aids and materials which are not included in

the first Industrial Education Materials Guide.

"The ABC of Internal Combustion" An animated motion picture explaining the
basic principles of the internal combustion engine. One of our most
numerous and common sources of power is the internal combustion engine. This
film shows "what makes it run." In simple language and enlivened with
easily identified animated cartoon characters it shows how the three basic
ingredients.-air, fuel, and ignition--work together to create power.

The film opens with a display of nature's forces at work in a volcano as
a springboard to shpw howman can create and control similar expansive forces
by combustion. The next sequence shows how a piston, connecting rod, and
crankshaft can harness these forces and put them to work. Then, the four-
stroke cycle is clearly and uniquely illustrated and along with that, the
fundamentals of valve operation, carburetion, and ignition timing are explained
in a way that removes the mystery from these operations. The film closes
with a few examples of the many fields in which these engines work for the
benefit of man.

Films: (Continued)

"The Miniature Sphere" The world is growing smaller. With our modern
technology in the fields of transportation and communication, we are only
minutes away from places formerly considered remote and inaccessible.
And as these distances seem to decrease, it has become necessary for some
of the components of these missiles and jets to decrease in size also.

The manufacture of instrument and miniature ball bearings is a specialized
business. Our mental picture of a bearing factory may be shaken when we
realize that we are talking of balls so small that it takes 35,000 of them
to fill a thimble and complete bearings next to which an ant looks huge.
And all of these made to dimensions accurate within millionths of an4 inch.

This film shows how such bearings are produced by GM's New Departure Division.
It illustrates the specialized machines, the numerous inspections and-the
instrumentation developed specifically for this job. Of particular interest
is the dust-free assembly room, where each employee has two "air showers"
before entering.

For engineering classes and others interested in the most up-to-date production
techniques of specialized nature, this is an excellent film.
Bray Studios, Inc,.

"Handle With Care" Color
A color film teaching mechanics how to remove, inspect, service, and install
ball bearings. School automotive classes, dealer service employees, and
others who maintain mechanical equipment, will get the most value from this
film. .Produced by the New Departure division of General Motors, it shows how
to service ball bearings. It emphasizes the fact that ball bearings are
highly accurate precision parts, and though strong and rugged, can easily
be damaged by careless handling.

This film demonstrates the proper way to remove a ball bearing without harming
it, how to clean it and see if it is satisfactory for further use, how to
lubricate it, and how to re-install the bearing so that it can be depended
upon to give good service. Cleanliness is stressed and the techniques shown
apply to the servicing of ball bearings in the shop and out in the field.

While this film is not of general interest, it offers valuable information
in this specialized field of ball bearing servicing. It updates and
supersedes the predecessor film entitled "Service Procedure for Ball Bearings,"
Bray Studios, Inc.

"On The Level" -
This film presents a dramatization of the need and application of the spring-
supported shock absorbers, and shows a new engineering principle for this
type of unit. It is recommended for vocational training classes.

depended upon to give good service.
General Motors Corporation

"Where Mileage Begins" Color
How an automobile engine works and how it is assembled is explained. Brilliant
color photography, easy-to-understand animation, and fascinating stop motion
techniques combine to make this a most entertaining and explanatory picture
on what makes a car go and how its engine is put together.

Cartoon-style moving diagrams vividly explain how fuel and air are mixed and
burned in the cylinder to create a force that acts on the piston and
crankshaft to drive the wheels. The related action of the valves, rocket
arms, camshaft, ignition system, and cooling system also is shown.

Then through the magic of stop motion, the audience becomes more familiar
with all parts that go into a modern V-8 engine and what they do. The
film concludes by showing the location and function of major units in the
chassis. .such as clutch, transmission, drive shaft, differential, brakes,
steering, etc.

workings of the modern automobile engine. This film combines cartoon and
technical animation to illustrate the component parts of an automobile
engine and how they operate.

ignition--are personified as animated cartoon characters. Throughout the
film they are seen performing their individual jobs in making the engine run.

As a follow-up picture to "The ABC of Internal Combustion," this film
goes into more detail regarding the units that make up the automobile engine.
Unique technical animation reveals the function of the carburetor, piston,
piston rings, ignition, cooling, lubricating systems, and all the many other
parts that make up the engines of today's fine motor cars.

This film handles a complex subject in an interesting and easily understandable
manner. (This film will have more educational value if "The ABC of Internal

The hero of this story is the engine which revolutionized flight by making
possible turboprop and turbojet airplanes. The film traces-the development
of how gas turbine engine, tells how it works, and shows how it is used
in aircraft. Working models and animated drawings keep the story clear

"The History of the Helicopter" Black & White; 20 minutes
The story of rotary wing aircraft is excitingly told from the first visionary
drawings of Leonardo da Vinci to today's modern passenger-carrying giants.
At the turn of the century, men who were convinced that rotary wings were
the answer to the problem of flying made fantastic attempts to develop
helicopters. However, their dreams were succeeded by modern applications
of the versatile craft in such diverse work as emergency rescue, crop spraying,
cattle round-up, police patrols, and military operations.
Shell Oil Company

"Transonic Flight" Color; 20 minutes
The second in the series on high-speed flight, this film deals less with
basic principles and more with practical details. It gives an analysis
of technical problems in the transonic range--speeds at which air-flow around
a plane is part subsonic and part supersonic. Sonic "bangs" and the "sound
barrier" are explained. The problems a pilot may meet when flying in these
speed ranges are shown, as are the solutions developed by designers who have
produced types of aircraft that have made transonic flight smooth and safe.
Shell Film Libraries

"Beyond The Speed of Sound" Color; 19 minutes
The last in the three-part series on high-speed flight, discusses the behavior
of supersonic air flow, explains that problems in designing supersonic
aircraft are more straightforward than in transonic planes, and shows how
problems of supersonic flight are being overcome through advanced design
techniques. Design solutions include swept-back'or delta planforms. Vertical
take-off is another possibility for the future' Models of tomorrow's
aircraft--very different from the subsonic airliners of today--are also
shown.
