PREFACE

This information has been compiled as a guide to superinten-
dents, principals, supervisors, and teachers of vocational agricul-
ture in providing suitable tools and equipment for effective
instruction in agricultural mechanics. Capital investment in
machinery, buildings, and other facilities has increased to the
point where, in many cases, it now exceeds all other investments
in the farm business, including the land. This mechanization,
increased utilization of facilities, and automation focuses a new
and greater importance on vocational agriculture instruction in
agricultural mechanics. In order for the farm operator and farm
workers to have the knowledge and skill necessary to make deci-
sions regarding the selection, operation, maintenance, and repair
of their machines and facilities, they must have adequate train-
ing.

To provide instruction to meet the needs of future farm oper-
ators and workers in these areas, adequate equipment, tools, and
reference materials are necessary. Instructional programs will
vary from one school to another. This fact makes it almost impos-
sible to publish a basic list of equipment that will be adequate
to all situations. Several factors influence the recommendation
of tools and equipment for instruction in agricultural mechanics.
They are: (1) number of students, (2) available space, (3) local
c budget, and (4) objectives, type, and extent of program being
i offered.

USE OF THIS PUBLICATION
-r
The items in this publication are listed alphabetically. The
description of each item is not, in all cases, a complete specifi-
~ ~ cation so this list should not be copied verbatim. When asking
for bids from suppliers, the description should be studied to ascer-
tain if it is adequate for the item that is being considered. Brand
names are being used as a guide to quality and as an aid to the
buyer and supplier. The use of brand names shall not be construed
as an endorsement of any one make.

Six (6) vertical columns are used to show the item needed in
the four (4) areas in the vocational agriculture program, that is,
Agricultural Mechanics, Soil Science, Animal Science, and Plant
Science. Water Management, though usually in Agricultural Mechan-
ics, is included in with Soil Science due to the close alliance of
the two fields.

Since a great majority of the items will be used in Agricul-
tural Mechanics, this area has been divided into Electric Power
and Processing (electricity, electric motors, materials handling,
etc.), Farm Power and Machinery (tractors, auxiliary engines,
trucks and agricultural field machinery), and Agricultural Construc-
tion, Buildings and Maintenance (carpentry, concrete and concrete

masonry, preserving, fencing, hot metal work, cold metal work,
tool fitting, arc welding, gas welding, domestic water systems
and disposal).

The numbers used in these columns are based on a class of
16 students, working in groups of 4 each. The highest number
opposite an item is the quantity of that item needed in a depart-
ment. For instance, in the case of the first item, "Air, Blow
Gun," 2 is the total needed for a particular department. It is
realized, however, that the quantity needed for a particular
purpose may vary across the State. For example, two-man, 6-foot,
crosscut saws may not be necessary where forestry is not impor-
tant.

The list prices are prices obtained from catalogue and dealers
located in Florida. The prices are subject to change and are for
estimating purposes only. These prices vary in different commun-
ities. Some dealers offer discounts, others do not. Consideration
should be given to whether the supplier will deliver the items set-
up and ready to operate or whether they will arrive in pieces for
the buyer to set-up. Dealer service is also a point to consider.
Firm bids on items should be obtained to arrive at an exact cost.
The prices shown are unit prices.

The "Total" column has been left blank so it can be used for
extensions of the list price (unit price) after it has been deter-
mined if the quantities of a specific item are adequate for a par-
ticular department. The last column, "Notes," has also been left
blank for the use of the individual department.

Tools and equipment purchased should be of high quality and
from reputable manufacturers. Factors to consider in purchasing
tools should include adequate size, adequate numbers, quality,
availability of service and parts, and cost.

A list of consumable supplies is included on pages 39-42, but
no quantities or prices are shown.

The equipping of a shop is only the beginning. It is also
essential to delegate responsibility for proper care, storage, use,
repair, and inventory of tools and equipment.

A very important matter is that of adequate financing for the
shop program. The old recommendation of $5.00 per student and
$2.50 per student for maintenance of equipment is outdated in view
of current cost and program objectives. A more realistic figure
would be $8.00 per student for consumable supplies and $4.00 per
student for equipment maintenance.

On the power tool list, certain tools have been marked as
essential for a vocational agriculture shop. The other power tools
are highly desirable and should be added as soon as possible to
complete the shop. No attempt has been made to make such a dis-
tinction between the items on the tool and equipment list. As

stated before, a careful study of each individual shop should be
made taking into consideration the factors already discussed.

FIELD EQUIPMENT

Field equipment for departments of vocational agriculture will vary over

the state. In all likelihood, no two departments will have the same re-

quirements. With this in mind, considering what will be suitable for pro-

viding sound basic instruction, we have arbitrarily selected a 30 horse-

power, 2-bottom plow tractor upon which to base our figuring and have se-

lected equipment that could be used on this size tractor. Since tractor

prices will vary greatly from locality to locality and since the price de-

pends greatly upon the accessories ordered with the tractor, we have based

the price upon the following general formula: (1) Gasoline tractors @

$90.00 per drawbar horsepower, (2) L.P. Gas tractors @ $95.00 per draw-

bar horsepower, and (3) Diesel tractors 0 $100.00 per drawbar horsepower.

CONSU.I&BLE MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES

Due to the varied nature and scope of instruction in vocational agriculture and the many different
kinds and types of materials available, it is difficult to prepare a specific list of essential items
suitable for all purposes. Some items create storage problems is purchased in quantity. For such items
it is suggested that they be added as needed. However, in most cases, the quantities of consumable sup-
plies and materials needed for one school year should be obtained in the summer before the opening of
school.
