THE WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE PROGRAM

The purpose of the Women in Agriculture (WIA) Program at the University
of Florida is to promote an understanding of gender and its effects on
agriculture in a variety of contexts. The Program aims to support .and to
develop faculty and student expertise related to the roles of women and
intra-household dynamics in agricultural production, research, and extension.
The Program is based on the recognition that women are critical to
agricultural production all over the world. Access to resources and research
technologies may be constrained by gender and may lead to detrimental effects
on the development and implementation of sound agricultural programs. It is
important to understand these constraints and how they vary by region and by
country in order to design and to implement agricultural programs that are
"equitable to participants and that yield appropriate returns to the resources
invested.

Program activities are designed to build on the interest and experience
of a broad, interdisciplinary constituency of faculty and of students
concerned with these topics in both international and domestic contexts. WIA
Program activities for 1985-86 included a major international conference on
"Gender Issues in Farming Systems Research and Extension;" a seminar series of
relevant speakers; strengthening on-campus courses; preparing this
bibliography/database on women in agriculture; and developing faculty and
student awareness and expertise.

INTRODUCTION

The Women in Agriculture Program bibliography/database began in 1984-85
as an inventory of materials in the private libraries and files of members of
the Steering Committee and of materials on file at the Farming Systems Support
Project. The bibliography/database was expanded in 1985-86 to include
materials found through a computerized search of the Agricola and CAB
abstracts. Items taken from this computer search were restricted to those
written in English focusing primarily on women in all aspects of agricultural
production and women in farming systems in developing countries; secondarily,
the topic women in rural development was considered. The abstracts of the
citations from Agricola and CAB are located in a loose-leaf file. Other items
found through this computer search that are not in English or that focus on
the United States, Canada, or Europe, are also available for reference.

Additional items for the bibliography/database were taken from previously
published or circulated bibliographies found in Anita Spring's private
collection and from the Women in Agriculture Library. Again, items selected
for inclusion were written in English and focused on women in agricultural
production, farming systems research and extension, gender issues in
agriculture, and intra-household dynamics, and women in rural development,
primarily in developing countries.

Unpublished items were included in the bibliography/database if they are
located on the University of Florida campus or if duplicates can be obtained
upon request from the collection housing them. Requests for items from the
other bibliographies consulted should be directed to the appropriate library
housing them. A list of the biblographies consulted is including in the List
of Locations.

Items were entered into the bibliography/ database using PFS:file
(Software Publishing Company) on an Apple lie personal computer. The program
is also available for IBM and IBM-compatible computers. Each item was entered
with the following format:

Line #: Category:

1-3: Author (Last Name, First Name, Middle Initial)
4: Date Published or Presented
5-8: Title
9-12: Publication or Presentation Information
13-14: Country (Continent, Country)
15-17: Keywords (Topics)
18: Location (University of Florida campus or Source Bibliography).

Using the PFS:File Program, one can retrieve an item or list of items by
any category or combination of separate categories; items can also be sorted
alphabetically. Lists of locations, countries, keywords, and a keyword
glossary follow this introduction. All items pertaining to Africa and to Latin
America/the Caribbean have been printed out from the complete bibliography/
database and are available at the Center for African Studies, the Center for
Latin American Studies, or the Women in Agriculture Library. Copies of the

complete bibliography/database printout are available at International
Programs, Hume Library (IFAS), Library West, and the Women in Agriculture
Library. Complete sets of computer disks containing the database are available
at all sites mentioned above.

The Women in Agriculture Bibliography/ Database is envisioned as an
on-going project of the Women in Agriculture Program. Use of a computer
database program enables users to continually update and add to the
bibliography. The Women in Agriculture Program would appreciate users sending
in new items for the bibliography/database in disk or printed form as they
encounter them.

Acknowledgements

The Women in Agriculture Program Bibliography/Database has been a
cooperative effort involving much hard work by many dedicated people. Anita
Spring began, directed, and encouraged the entire effort, and lent her
expertise to sorting and classifying items. Susan Poats and Dan Reboussin of
the Farming Systems Support Project made a major contribution through
inventorying and compiling a bibliography of farming systems materials and
women in agriculture. Ann King of Hume Library, with Susan Almy, ran the
Agricola and CAB computer searches. Ray Jones, Colleen Seale, and Delores
Jenkins of Library West provided further consulting on computer searches and
the library's acquisitions in the related subject areas. Lois Stanford and
Barbara Rogers began the process of entering items into the computer. Darla
Wilkes did the initial sort of the Agricola/CAB materials, then assisted in
data entry, printing, and innumerable other ways. Ellen C. Ham and Victor
Marrero helped prepare the CAB/Agricola materials for data entry and performed
many useful errands on behalf of the bibliography/database project. Scott
Owens in the Office of Instructional Resources was in charge of duplication.
