This report is the third in a series documenting a field project within the Gulf Islands National Seashore at Perdido Key, Florida. Dredging of Pensacola Pass for the U.S. Navy has provided a large quantity of good quality sand that has been used for beach nourishment on the Gulf of Mexico side of Perdido Key. The nourished area begins at the eastern end of Perdido Key, at Pensacola Pass, and extends westward for approximately 8 km. The nourishment was initiated in November, 1989, and was completed August, 1990, resulting in a typical increase in beach width of 150 m. A later phase of the dredging project will include disposal of dredge spoil in the nearshore zone just offshore of the beach nourishment project.
Previous reports have documented the pre-nourishment survey (Work et al., 1990a), and presented much of the data collected since the initiation of the study in October, 1989 (Work et al., 1990b). Many physical and environmental parameters are being monitored during the course of the study. Hydrographic surveys were conducted in October/November, 1989, and September, 1990, (immediately pre- and post-nourishment, respectively), and will continue annually. These surveys indicate that approximately 4.3 million m3 of material was placed on the beach for nourishment. The actual pay quantity, based on surveys conducted by the contractor during the beach nourishment operation, was 5.4 million m3. It is anticipated that several more limited profile surveys will be performed,

1 INTRODUCTION

This report presents beach profile data comparing the pre- and post-nourishment beach profiles, and pre- and post-nourishment sediment data. Wave, tide, and weather data collected since the last progress report are also included. Annual data reports summarizing the wave, tide, and weather data for the entire year are planned; the first such report is in preparation and will be issued later in February, 1991.
2 DATA COLLECTION
The post-nourishment survey utilized the same equipment and methods as the prenourishment survey of October/November, 1989. Twenty-five beach profiles were surveyed along the same transects as for the pre-nourishment survey. The profiles are separated by a nominal spacing of 600 m (2000 feet), with a 300 m (1000 feet) spacing used near each end of the nourishment area for finer detail. The original plan for the project stated that the nourished area should extend as far west as R-45. This was later modified, and the project as completed extended just beyond R-41, i.e. its length was extended by slightly more than one kilometer. Because of this change, six profile lines not included in the pre-nourishment survey were profiled to wading depth during the post-nourishment survey. Two of these profiles (R-25 and R-29) extended the monitored area to the west, and the remaining four (R-35, R-37, R-39, and R-41) were selected to provide improved definition in areas where rapid changes are anticipated.
Since no overwash events occurred during the time interval defined by the two surveys, each post-nourishment profile commenced at its respective benchmark, and was extended only towards the Gulf of Mexico; i.e. the bay side of the island was not re-surveyed.
A brief description of each data collection technique is provided below. The reader is referred to previous reports for a more detailed discussion of the methods and equipment used for data collection.




2.1 Hydrographic and Topographic Surveys

Each profile line was surveyed to wading depth (-2 m) using standard rod and optical level techniques. A magnetic transit was used to establish the direction of each line, which was marked by a wooden stake. Elevations were then determined along this line wherever there was a change in slope, the assumption being that the profile is linear between data points. Elevations were measured to the nearest centimeter. Distances were measured to the nearest 0.1 m, using a 50 m fiberglass tape. An optical rangefinder was used to measure horizontal distances offshore when distances from the beach to the offshore point of interest exceeded 50 m. The coordinates, elevations, and azimuths for each Florida Department of Natural Resources (DNR) benchmark within the survey area are given in Table 1. Note that not all of these monuments were used during the survey; those used are marked in Table 1 by an asterisk (*).
Because of the relatively large distances between the benchmarks and the shoreline after nourishment of the beach, a temporary benchmark was established near the shoreline for each profile. The microwave transponders for the determination of distance to the survey vessel were positioned at these temporary benchmarks during the survey of the offshore portions of the profile.
The deeper portions of the profile were surveyed by a survey vessel, equipped with an acoustic fathometer, a 'master' microwave transponder, and data recording equipment. The transponder sends a signal to a shore-based 'slave' unit, measures the time required to receive a return signal, and computes the distance between the two units. Two transponders were available onshore; one was maintained as a backup throughout the post-nourishment survey and was not used. The fathometer was calibrated immediately before the start of the hydrographic survey. This is accomplished by suspending a large, flat object at a known depth beneath the fathometer transducer and adjusting the reported depth to agree with the known value.
The alignment of the boat along the survey line was maintained through the use of two large, orange, range markers. Ranges 30-64 were traversed three times, so that the effects

of any waves on depth measurements could be removed by averaging. Ranges 65-67 were surveyed during conditions of negligible waves and decreasing daylight, so were traversed only twice. Since the depths recorded by the boat must be corrected for tide, a simple stilling well was installed offshore of the Perdido Key Ranger Station, near Range 34. The stilling well has a graduated tape affixed to it; readings of the water level were made visually every fifteen minutes during the hydrographic survey. The tape on the stilling well was levelled to a monument for which the elevation was known.
Wave conditions during the survey were in general quite mild, making it possible to obtain a large number of data points during the wading profiles and to assure that the areas surveyed by rod and level overlapped with those surveyed by boat.
2.2 Sand Samples
Onshore sand samples were again collected at the dune, berm, and beachface along each survey line. These and the samples at the 1 m and 2 mn depths were obtained during the course of the wading profile survey. At each sampling point, a small quantity of sand (typically 200-300 g) was scooped from the upper 5 cm of the beach and placed in a prelabelled cloth sack.
An attempt was made to collect the offshore samples from the same points sampled during the pre-nourishment survey. During the pre-nourishment survey, as the boat gathered bathymetric data, Loran coordinates (latitude and longitude) were stored when the boat reached depths of 5 m and 8 m, or at the seaward end of the survey line if the survey distance limit of approximately 800 mn from shore was reached before the depth reached 8 m. A portable Loran set was used to enable return to these points during the post-nourishment sediment sampling. Table 2 provides the Loran coordinates for each offshore sample. A heavy iron sampler was lowered to the bottom at each sampling point and dragged until it had filled with sediment. It was then hauled to the surface and a small quantity was placed in a cloth sack for later analysis. To address the question of whether any fine material might be lost as the sampler is hauled from the bottom to the surface, additional samples

were collected at five locations by a diver. The diver sampled the bottom using a coffee can, placed a lid over the opening immediately after sampling, and swam to the surface. Figures 3, 4, and 5 compare the samples collected by the bucket and diver techniques. Differences in the sediment size distributions induced by the collection method are seen to be quite small. The D50 sediment size was slightly larger in three of the five diver-obtained samples; however the average difference is only 0.005 mm. This result supports use of the simpler sampling technique.
2.3 Wave Data
A directional wave gage was installed offshore of the Gulf Islands National Seashore Ranger Station on Perdido Key in approximately 7 m of water on January 18, 1990. The gage measures the time-varying pressure and horizontal velocity components, storing the data on a magnetic tape. This allows computation of significant wave height, H.,, representative wave period, T,,,, wave direction, magnitude and direction of any mean current, and tidal stage. The gage does not record continuously, but collects 15-minute bursts of data every six hours. The data analysis procedures are described in Work et al. (1990b).
The wave gage is self-contained, and must be retrieved to allow access to the data. The original package was replaced May 2, 1990, the second unit August 8, 1990, and the third December 6, 1990. The fourth unit, currently in place, should be replaced in early 1991 by a gage that will be hard-wired to shore, allowing more convenient access to, and checking of, the data.
This report includes data (Appendices III and IV) covering the period May 2, 1990 through December 6, 1990. Gaps in the data set indicate either gage malfunctions or periods when magnetic storage was exhausted prior to recovery of the package.

2.4 Meteorological Data

Wind speed and direction, air temperature, rainfall, and wetness data are all collected by a weather station at the Ranger Station on Perdido Key. Data are recorded hourly, and periodically transferred to a computer at the University of Georgia. Appendix V presents data for the period August-December, 1990.
2.5 Additional Tide Data
A tide gage was installed on the Ft. Pickens fishing pier on Santa Rosa Island on January 30, 1990. The gage mechanically records a trace on a strip chart, providing a time-history of the still water level (i.e. neglecting the effects of short period waves). Fresh recording paper must be installed weekly; the National Park Service has assumed responsibility for this task. Data from the gage are presented in Appendix VI. Several large, temporal gaps are evident, due to both lack of maintenance of the gage and mechanical problems.
2.6 Photographic Documentation
Color slides were taken during the post-nourishment survey to visually document the effects of the beach nourishment project. Shots were taken along each survey line, typically illustrating the views to the east, south and west. Color prints were made from the slides and mounted in photo albums. The photos are not presented in this report; all photographic material is being held by the Coastal and Oceanographic Engineering Department of the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.
3 PRESENTATION OF DATA
The beach profile and sediment data are discussed briefly below with all results organized as appendices.




3.1 Beach Profile Data

Figure 6 presents an example of the pre- and post-nourishment beach profiles for Range 44. Note that the horizontal axis denotes distance from the survey monument in meters, with positive distances indicating points seaward (i.e. towards the Gulf of Mexico) of the monument. The vertical axis indicates elevation in meters relative to NGVD (National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929). The pre-nourishment survey is plotted with a heavy line; the light line corresponds to the post-nourishment survey. In cases where overlap between the wading profile and the boat survey did not exist (e.g. the pre-nourishment survey at Range 32), the missing portion of the profile was interpolated by examination of the adjacent profiles. This is denoted as "constructed profile" and is plotted with a dashed line.
It can be seen in Figure 6 that the beach nourishment project increased the dry beach width at Range 44 by approximately 150 m. This profile is of particular interest because of the large "bumps" that appear offshore. These features were present in each of the three passes across the profile, and are also evident, to a smaller degree, along several other profiles within the nourished area. Inspection of the spatial variation of the D50 sediment size (see Figure 11 and Appendix II) reveals that these bumps correlate well with locations of fine sediment. A number of the offshore sand samples from the vicinity of Range 44 resembled a fine ooze when brought to the surface. They became cemented upon drying and had to be crushed before sieve analysis. Presence of this fine material is not solely a result of the dredging project, however, since several of the pre-nourishment samples exhibited the same properties. It does appear that the dredging has increased the amount of fine material at the 5 m depth, however.
Figure 7 illustrates the change in dry beach width and cross-sectional area along Perdido Key due to the beach nourishment project. To estimate the volume change between two sections, the cross-sectional areas are averaged and multiplied by the distance between sections. Computing volume changes between each pair of adjacent sections and summing

all changes gives the project volume, 4.3 million m3 for this case. This estimate includes only changes between Ranges 42 and 64.
Appendix I presents beach profiles for all 25 survey lines, and the six additional profiles to wading depth that were added for the post-nourishment survey. The discrepancy apparent in portions of the dune profile near the survey monument at R-63 is believed to be due to a slight lateral shift between the two survey lines. The pre-nourishment survey crew was unable to locate the monument, and had to estimate its position. Because of spatial undulations in the dunes, a slight shift can indicate a deceptively large change in the profile.
3.2 Sediment Characteristics
Table 3 illustrates the spatial distribution of the sediment samples collected during the post-nourishment survey. Sediment data are available for 174 sampling points; the six gaps indicate samples that were either lost or not collected.
Some changes were made in the sand sample analysis procedure since anal ysis of the pre-nourishment samples. To improve the resolution of the grain size distribution curves, a total of twelve sieves was used, rather than the previous six. Table 4 indicates the size of each. A more accurate interpolation scheme was used to compute the median grain size. This new scheme was checked against the previously reported median grain sizes from the pre-nourishment survey, and indicated that the old method typically overestimated the median grain size by 0.01 mm, i.e. about 3%. Figures 8 through 11 compare the median grain sizes before and after nourishment of the beach. The new interpolation scheme has been used to generate all values for these figures.
The sorting index, skewness, and kurtosis of each grain size distribution were determined for each of the sand samples. These correspond to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th moments, respectively, of the grain size distribution curve, and were approximated using the relations shown on the following page (Inman, 1952). Note that each parameter is expressed in terms of O-units, where 0 = 1092 D, and D is the grain size in millimeters. The notation used is
