Alcantarillados.
PREFACE
This annual publication presents historical data beginning with fiscal year 1940. It
contains important socio-economic variables that can be helpful in analyzing the social and
economic situation of the Island. The data is presented at ten-year intervals until 1970 and
annually from 1974 to 1987.
This publication contains information on: the gross product at current and constant
prices and its components; gross domestic product at current and constant dollars; net
income by distributive shares and by major industrial sector; labor force; basic data on
construction, agriculture, tourism and banking. It also includes the following information:
vital statistics; statistics on private and public education; transportation; communication;
passenger movement; consumption and production of electric energy; and the number of
customers of the Electric Power Authority and the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority. A series
of charts related to the variables are presented for the first time.
Although it would be desirable to present all the data for fiscal years, in some cases,
due to the nature of certain statistics, they are only available for calendar years or for
specific months.
The publication of this volume has been possible thanks to the dedication and effort
of the personnel of the Bureau of Statistics, of the Area of Economic and Social Planning,
the operator of the Varityper composition machine, and all those persons in the public
and private enterprises that supplied the information necessary to compile these statistics.
We hope this document will be of interest and usefulness to all those persons and
entities interested in the economic and social development of Puerto Rico.
