COMMONWEALTH DAY MESSAGE.

8th June, 1968.
From HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN
HEAD OF THE COMMONWEALTH
To THE CHAIRMAN
THE JOINT COMMONWEALTH SOCIETIES' COUNCIL
On Commonwealth Day i send my best wishes to all the peoples of the
Commonwealth and I offer my prayers for their well-being in these tense and
anxious days. The yearnings of humanity for peace and friendship are still
overlaid by fears, suspicions and misunderstandings, and these cloud and con-
fuse our minds.

In this perplexing but challenging era it is a help to hold fast to those
intimate associations and shared experiences which bring us together.

We have exactly such an influence in the Commonwealth. When we find
ourselves differing we are grieved. When we agree, we rejoice.
Our relationships will naturally change with the changing times. The
Commonwealth is an inheritance to each succeeding generation who must decide
how they can make it relevant to their problems. But if the spirit persists, such
relationships will respond to the needs of the modern world and will be powerful
in their influence for good.
Let us therefore search for new opportunities and new directions in which
we may further strengthen what we call the Commonwealth spirit-a tradition
of tolerance, forbearance and mutual understanding-to the further benefit of
mankind.
