damage caused by hurricanes "Flora"
and "Edith" is not clearly understood
by all and this statement is issued in
an attempt to remove all doubt and
misunderstanding which might exist.
This Government is determined to
ensure, as far as is possible, that the
rate of development of the banana in-
dustry, which is of the greatest import-
ance to the economy and the Welfare
of the people, is maintained and im-
improved. For this reason every effort
was made after the hurricanes to pro-
vide assistance to farmers for repairing
the damage caused to banana planta-
tions. Her Majesty's Government in
the United Kingdom were approached
by this Government and the Secretary
of State has notified approval of assist-
ance making it possible for fertilizer to
be issued to Banana growers for appli-
cations to their fields at one quarter of
a ton per acre for three applications on
the following basis:-

1. First Application.
(a) Farmers who plant less than 50
acres of bananas to receive fer-
tilizer free.
(b) Farmers who plant 50 acres and
more, to receive fertilizer at half
the cost. That is they must pay
half price for the fertilizer re-
ceived.

2. Second Application.
(a) Farmers who plant less than 50
acres must pay one quarter of
the cost of the fertilizer they re-
ceive.
(b) Farmers who plant 50 acres and
more must pay three-quarters of
the cost of the fertilizer they re-
ceive.

3. Third Application.
All farmers must pay full cost for
the fertilizer they receive.
Issues for the first application have
been completed and issues for the
second application are well in hand. Ar-
rangements have been made for stocks
to be available for issues for the third
application and farmers will be notified
of the dates of issue in due course.
All farmers, peasants, large and small
landowners-who grow bananas should
bear in mind that full payment must be
made by them for the third issue. They
should make suitable arrangements to
meet this commitment.

This Government is mindful of Her
Majesty's Government's interest in this,

matter and is most grateful that they so
willingly came to our aid in the emer-
gency.
