TENDERS FOR THE CONVEYANCE
OF MAIL- AND PASSENGERS
TO A FROM BEQUIA.

Tenders will be accepted at the Fin-
ancial Secretary's Office up to 3.00 p.m.
on Saturday 28th May, 1960, for the
conveyance daily with the exception of
Sunday and Public Holidays, of
Mails, including Parcel Post Mails, Pas-
sengers, to and from the island of
Bequia for a period of two (2) years
commencing from 1st June, 1960.
The Contractor shall not arbitrarily
refuse to convey any passenger who
pays or offers to pay his or her fare.
The Contract may be terminated by
one month's notice on either side.
A bond with Government for satisfac-
tory performance of the contract will be
required.
Tenders should state the amount of
subsidy required and must be addressed
to the Chairman, Tenders Board, Fin-
ancial Secretary's Office. The envelope
should be distinctly marked: "TEN-
DERS FOR BEQIUIA MAIL AND
PASSENGER SERVICE".

THE WEST INDIES.

RECRUITMENT OF OFFICERS
FOR NEW FEDERAL SHIPS.

Applications are invited from suit-
ably qualified persons for appointment
as deck and engineer officers to serve on
the two new ships which are being pro-
vided for The West Indies by the Gov-
ernment of Canada.
2. Particulars of the various posi-
tions and the qualifications required are
as follows:-
Master:
Master's Foreign-going Certificate
with at least 2 years in command,
preferably in passenger carrying
vessels.
Chief Officer:
First Mate's Foreign-going certi-
ficate.
Chief Engineer; Second Engineer:
First Class Ministry of Transport
or equivalent certificate with motor
endorsement.
Radio Officer:
3 years experience and over at sea
with First or Second Class certifi-
cate.
Second Officer:
First Mate's certificate.
Third Officer:
Second Mate's certifi- Prefer-
cate. ably
Third Engineer: foreign
Second Class certificate going.
with motor endorse-
ment.
Fourth Engineer:
Uncertified.
Chief Steward and Purser:
Previous experience in passenger
vessels for at least 3 years. Prefer-
ably with Cook's qualifications.
Electrician:
Licensed with 3 years service at sea.
In the recruitment of officers, prefer-
ence will be given to suitable West In-
dian candidates in possession of the re-
quired qualifications and experience.
3. Applicants should furnish parti-
culars of their age, qualifications and
experience, with details of certificates
of competency held and the authority
by whom issued, copies of two recent
testimonials, and the names of two re-
ferees. Applications should be ad-
dressed to the Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Communications and
Works, Federal House, Port of Spain,
Trinidad, to reach him not later than
the 30th June, 1960.
4. Rates of pay and other conditions
of service have not yet been determined
but these are expected to be approxi-

mately at the level of National Maritime
Board scales applicable to British ships.
5. The ships for which crews are
being recruited are each of 1,500 tons,
with accommodation for 50 cabin and
200 deck passengers, and a cargo capa-
city of some 80,000 cubic feet and will
be engaged in maintaining a regular
service between the various Territories
of the Federation. It is expected that
they will be completed around the mid-
dle of 1961.
The Chief Engineer will be required
to assume duty from four to six months
before the completion date, and the
Master, First Officer, Second Engineer
and Electrician to join the ship some
two to three months later. The remain-
ing Officers will probably be assigned
to the ships just before their delivery
to the Federal Government.

DUTY-FREE IMPORTATION
OF GOODS.

Government has recently reviewed the
policy, set forth in the Notice dated 15th
April 1958 with regard to duty-free im-
portation of goods, which has now been
operating fcr two years. It has been
decided that it is necessary further t3
reduce the number of such exemptions,
both because of the need to conserve
revenue in every possible way, an- als:
in view of the general state of the
economy.

The public are therefore advised that
although due regard will be paid to the
conditions listed in paragraph 2 of
the Notice dated 15th April, 1958, those
conditions will not be regarded as auto-
matically qualifying for remission of

considered on their merits, but it is neces-
sary to emphasize that-the-number which
will be approved will be less than in the
recent past.
