FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To commemorate
Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SPARC celebrates a National Day of
Unity, observes Purple Ribbon Week surrounding the Day of Unity and holds a
luncheon to honor those involved in ending domestic violence.
Oct. 3 is the National Day of Unity. This day has become a week of
activities conducted at all levels to mourn those who have died because of
domestic violence, celebrate those who have survived and connect those who work
to end the violence.
During this week-long national observance, SPARC encourages supporters
to wear or tie on purple ribbons to acknowledge and bring awareness to violence
against women and their children. Purple ribbon week is Oct. 3 through Oct. 9.
SPARC's annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month luncheon will be
held Oct. SPARC hosts the luncheon each year to honor those people who
have been involved in efforts to end violence against women. Outstanding
volunteers, law enforcement officers and other outstanding supporters will be
honored for their efforts to end the violence.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time set aside nationally
to mourn the loss of women who were victims of domestic violence
It is also a time to celebrate those who have survived abusive
relationships and pay tribute to those who work with
organizations like SPARC
Statistic show that one out of three women will be sexually
assaulted in her lifetime. A woman is beated every 9 seconds.
Fifty percent of married women are beaten at least once by their
husbands and '24 percent of those women are pregnant. Almost 4
million women are battered annually and about 2.5 million
children are seriously abused by a parent, guardian or others.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an integral part of SPARC
because it is the month where we connect with battered women's
advocates across the country who are working to end violence
against women and their children." said Mary Nutter Executive
Director of SPARC

SUBJECT: Library Mailout
DATE: September 27, 1994
In preparation for October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Governor Lawton Chiles
sent a letter to all Florida's public, state university and community college libraries
requesting their participation by creating public awareness displays. More than 150 libraries
have responded. For your information, I have enclosed a sample packet of materials which
all 150 libraries have received for use with their public awareness displays. We are
particularly excited about the bookmarks.

Dear Library Manager:
More than 150 libraries across Florida will be participating in Domestic Violence Awareness
Month by creating a display in their libraries. We appreciate your support on this critical issue.
Enclosed, please find the following:
1. Two Liz Claiborne posters;
2. Bookmarks listing new statewide toll-free number and information on domestic
violence centers around the state;
3. NCADV fact sheets;
4. Power and Control Wheel handouts;
5. Myths of Domestic Violence flyers;
6. Domestic Violence Awareness Month Calendar;
7. County-by-county listing of statewide domestic violence centers;
8. Bibliography;
9. Ryka Rose pamphlets;
10. "There's NO Excuse" pamphlet;
11. List of videos available from the State Library of Florida.
Please note that these items may be duplicated if more copies are required. Many activities
will be taking place throughout the state. Your local center is an excellent resource for current
information on these activities.
Each library may be as creative as it wishes. For example, the Manatee County Library System
in Bradenton designed a bookmark with a list of relevant books about abuse. They also
arranged for a speaker to present a program on the dynamics of family violence. This is an
especially helpful way to "get the word out." Their flyer is attached.
If the Governor's Office can be of further assistance, please call (904) 921-2168, or contact
Kathy Daniels, The Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence, Room 210, The Capitol,
