SECTION II-VITAL STATISTICS OF BRITISH HONDURAS, 1958.
(See Tables 1-12)
POPULATION.
1. The estimated population of British Honduras on the 31st December, 1958, was 88,156
consisting of 43,025 males and 45,131 females. This is arrived at by adding to the population

as ascertained at the Census taken on the 9th April, 1946, the number of births regis-
tered between that date and the end of the year under review, and deducting therefrom the total
number of deaths which occurred in the same period, and by adding the excess of immigration
over emigration during the year. The distribution of the population throughout the districts
of British Honduras, with the density per square mile is shown in Appendix A.

2. The following table shows the natural increase of population during the year under
review, classified by districts in order of numerical precedence:-

Total Total Resulting

tion on the 31st December, 1958 was 9.94.

MARRIAGES.

the preceding year. This gives a rate of 5.47 per 1,000 of the estimated population,
and a decrease of .87 as compared with 1957. The greatest number of marriages was celebrated
in the Belize District in which there were 234. The Toledo, Cayo, Corozal Districts come next
with 59, 51, 50 respectively, while the Orange Walk and Stann Creek Districts each had 36.

5. The number of marriages and rates per 1,000 of population for the last five years are
as follows:-

10. The births registered during the year numbered 3,988 being 1,971 males and 2,017
females. This gives a rate of 46.80 per 1,000 of the estimated population. These figures do
not include re-registration under section 10 of the Legitimacy Ordinance, Chapter 7 of 1953.

The following table shows the total Births for British Honduras during the last

Creek, Cayo, Orange Walk, Belize and Toledo Districts follow in that order.

12. The birth rate per 1,000 of the estimated population in each District for the past five

medical practitioners. These have been classified under major heads in Table 11 by
the Director of Medical Services.

14. 275 out of the 795 deaths registered were not medically certified. This represents
346.9 of every 1,000 deaths as compared with 358.4 for the previous year. The deaths certified
by Coroners, etc. are shown in Table 11A and the uncertified deaths in Table 1 lB.

every 1,000 birth in 1957.

16. In 1958 the highest death rate of infants under 1 year was in the Toledo District where
the rate was 179.22 per cent and the lowest was in the Stann Creek District where the rate was
55.79 per cent. For British Honduras a decrease of 9.11 is recorded.
