ANNUAL REPORT OF THE REGISTRAR GENERAL'S DEPARTMENT

FOR THE YEAR 1957.

I have the honour to submit the following report on the activities of the Registrar
General's Department during the year ended 31st December, 1957. The report is divided into
two sections: Section I deals with departmental activities and Section II is devoted to the
Statistics or births, deaths and marriages.

SECTION I-DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES.
REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES.

2. Registration Districts. In the six administrative districts of British Honduras, i.e.
Belize, Corozal, Orange Walk, Cayo, Stann Creek and Toledo, births and deaths may be regis-
tered. Each District Commissioner is an ex-officio District Registrar, and he is assisted by
deputy registrars in the villages and settlements throughout his district.

3. Marriage Officers. At the 31st December, 1957 there were 64 ministers of religion on
the Marriage Register. These were belonging to religious denominations as follows-

The Registrar General in the Belize District and the 5 District Commissioners in
the Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, Toledo and Cayo Districts, were also competent to
celebrate marriages.

5. Four new names were acred to the Medical Register during the year. The names of
25 Medical Practitioners were on the register at the 31st December, 1957.

DENTAL REGISTRATION.

6. The number of Dentists on the Register at the 31st of December, 1957, was 4.

OPTICIANS REGISTRATION.

7. The number of Optometry Practitioners onthe Register at 31st December, 1957, was
five.
CHEMISTS AND DRUGGISTS REGISTRATION.

8. The number of Chemists and Druggists on the Register at 31st December, 1957, was 29.
Five new names were added to the Register during the year.

MIDWIFERY REGISTRATION.

9. At the 31st December, 1957, there were 197 Midwives on the Register. 15 new names
were added during the year.

COMPANIES REGISTRATION.

10. At the 31st December, 1957, 55 Limited Liability Companies Incorporated in British
Honduras were on the Register. 23 Companies incorporated abroad were registered here as at
31st December, 1957.
BUSINESS NAMES REGISTRATION.

11. At the 3st December, 1957, there were 201 businesses on the Register.

TRADE MARK REGISTRATION.

12. 77 new trade marks were registered during the year and the registration of 39 trade
marks on the Register renewed for a further period of 14 years.

TRADE UNIONS.

13. At the end of 1957 there were 5 Trade Unions on the Register.

REVENUE COLLECTED.

14. During the year 1957 a total of $62,247.57 revenue was collected through this Depart-
ment. The details are as follows:-

SECTION II-VITAL STATISTICS OF BRITISH HONDURAS, 1957
(See Tables 1-12)
POPULATION.
1. The estimated population of British Honduras on the 31st December, 1957 was 85,098
consisting of 41,528 males and 43,570 females. This is arrived at by adding to the population







as ascertained at the Census taken on the 9th April, 1946, the number of births registered be-
tween that date and the end of the year under review, and deducting therefrom the total number
of deaths which occurred in the same period, and by adding the excess of immigration over
emigration during the same period. The distribution of the population throughout the districts
of British Honduras, with the density per square mile is shown in Appendix A.

2. The following table shows the natural increase of population during the year under
review, classified by districts in order of numerical precedence:-

3. The Population to the square mile of British Honduras based on the average population
on the 31st December, 1957 was 9.43.

MARRIAGES.

4. 531 marriages were registered during the year, being an increase of 67 compared with
the preceding year. This gives a rate of 6.34 per 1,000 of the mid-year population. The greatest
number of marriages was celebrated in the Belize District in which there were 263. The Corozal,
Toledo, Stann Creek, Cayo Districts, come next with 64, 60, 54, 46 respectively, while the
Orange Walk District is last with 44.

5. The number of marriages and rates per 1,000 of population for the last five years are as
follows:-

6. The previous civil status of persons marrying is shown in the following table:-

7. Of the husbands 3, and of the wives 119, were minors, that is to say persons under the
age of 18 years.

8. The classification of the marriages according to religious denomination is shown in
table 7.

9. Of the 1062 persons married, 126 signed by making their marks ("X") by way of sig-
nature, the percentage of such mark signatures being 11.9. These figures show a significant in-
crease in both the actual number and the percentage of persons particularly brides making
their marks.







The sex proportions of these who signed by marks were as follows:-

BIRTHS.
10. The births registered during the year numbered 3,615 being 1,836 males and 1,779
females. This gives a rate of 43.25 per 1,000 of the estimated population. These figures do not
include re-registration under section 10 of the Legitimacy Ordinance, Chapter 7 of 1953.

The births for the year 1957 are divided as follows:-Negro, 1,590; Other Races, 904;
Indian, 790; Carib, 331. The racial classification is not accurate, owing to intermixing of the
races.
11. The highest birth rate per 1,000 shown for the year was in the Corozal District; Stann
Creek, Orange Walk, Belize, Toledo and Cayo Districts follow in that order.

12. The birth rate per 1,000 of the estimated population in each district for the past five
years was as follows:-

13. Of the total births registered as legitimate, the males amount 904 and the females 920.
Of the illegitimate births, the males numbered 940 and the females 851.

STILL BIRTHS.

14. The Total number of still births registered during 1957 was 90, of which 51 were males
and 39 females. Of the males 25 were legitimate and 26 illegitimate and of the females 19 legi-
timate and 20 illegitimate.
DEATHS.

15. The deaths of 932 persons were registered during the year, and of these 491 were males
and 441 females, giving a rate respectively per 1,000 of the population of 5.90 and 5.25 and a
total death rate per 1,000 of 11.15. In the preceding year there were 821 deaths with a rate of
9.97. Of the deaths in 1957, 360 were Negro, 255 Indian, 247 Other Races and 70 Carib,

17. Of the 932 deaths registered during the year 598 or 64.2 per cent were certified by
medical practitioners. These have been classified under major heads in Table 11 by the Director
of Medical Services.

18. Of the 932 deaths registered 334 were not certified by medical men. This represents
358.4 of every 1,000 deaths as compared with 39.3 for the previous year. The deaths certified
by Coroners, etc. are shown in Table 11A and the uncertified deaths in Table 1 lB.

INFANTILE MORTALITY.

19. Of the 9932 deaths registered during the year 334 were those of infants under 1 year and
this is equal to a rate of 92.39 for every 1,000 births as against 257 or 69.0 for each 1,000 birth
in 1956.

20. In 1957 the highest death rate of infants under 1 year was in the Toledo District where
the rate was 179.56 per cent and the lowest was in the Stann Creek District where the rate was
67.51 per cent. For British Honduras an increase of 23.4 is recorded.

21. The following comparative statement shows the rate per 1000 children born alive
and dying under the age of 1 year for the past five years in British Honduras and in the Belize
District:-
