SECTION II-VITAL STATISTICS OF BRITISH HONDURAS, 1955
(See Tables 1-12)
POPULATION.

1. The estimated population of British Honduras on the 31st December, 1955, was 80,888
consisting of 39,785 males and 41,103 females. This is arrived at by adding to the population
as ascertained at the Census taken on the 9th April, 1946, the number of births registered be-
tween that date and the end of the year under review, and deducting therefrom the to, al number
of deaths which occurred in the same period, and by adding the excess of immigration over
emigration during the same period. The distribution of the population throughout the districts
of British Honduras, with the density per square mile is shown in Appendix A.
2. The following table shows the increase of population during the year under review,
classified by districts in order of numerical precedence:-
Total Total Resulting
Districts Births Deaths natural
1955 1955 increase

Belize .. .. .. 1,46 417 1,047
Corozal .. .. .. 359 89 270

3. The Population, to the square mile of British Honduras based on the estimated popu-
lation on the 31st December, 1955 was 9.12.
MARRIAGES.

4. 411 marriages were registered during the year, being an increase of 70 compared with
the preceding year. This gives a rate of 5.08 per 1,000 of the estimated population, and an in-
crease of .71 as compared with 1954. The greatest number of marriages was celebrated in the
Belize District in which there were 212. The Cayo, Stann Creek, Corozal, Orange Walk
Districts, come next with 50, 47, 36, 35 respectively, while the Toledo District is last with 31.
Following the steep rise in 1953 and the decrease in 1954, this figure of 411 now approaches
the average number for previous years.
5. The number of marriages and rates per 1,000 of population for the last five year are
as follows:-

Year Number Rate per 1,000

1951 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 492 6.95
1952 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 430 5.88
1953 .. .. .. .. .. .. 539 7.11
1954 .. .. .. .. .. . 341 4.37
1955 .. .. .. .. .. 411 5.08

6. The previous civil status of persons marrying is shown in the following table:-
Divorced
Spinsters Widows Women Total
Bachelors .. .. .. .. 381 7 1 389
Widowers .. .. .. .. 10 6 1 17
Divorced Men .. .. .. 5 5

7. Of the husbands 1, and of the wives 94, were minors, that is to say persons under
the age of 18 years.
8. The classification of the marriages according to religious denomination is shown
in table 7.
9. Of the 822 persons married, 55 signed by making their marks ("X") by way of signa-
ture, the percentage of such mark signatures being 6.7. These figures show a significant de-
crease in both the actual number and the percentage of persons particularly bridegrooms
making their marks.
3

The sex proportions of those who signed by marks were as follows:-
Bridegrooms: 19 Brides: 36 Mean: 28
BIRTHS.
10. The births registered during the year numbered 3,463 being 1,724 males and 1,739
females. This gives a rate of 42.81 per 1,000 of the estimated population. These figures do not
include re-registration under section 10 of the Legitimacy Ordinance, Chapter 189 of the
Consolidated Laws, 1953.
The following table shows the total births for British Honduras during the last five years:-

Cayo, Toledo, Corozal, Orange Walk and Belize Districts follow in that order.

12. The birth rate per 1,000 of the estimated population in each District for the past
five years was as follows:-

rate of 11.22. Of the deaths in 1955, 363 were Negro, 210 Indian, 216 Other Races and 69

the rate was 13.73 per cent and the lowest was in the Cayo District where the rate was 6.60 per
