GRAIN SORGHUM! VARIETY TRIALS AT A.R.E.C. BELLE GLADE
FOR 1969 THROUGH 1973

One hundred and one varieties of grain sorghum have been tested at Belle
Glade during the five year period of 1969 through 1973. Seven of these varieties
were tested all five years, ten for four years, eight for three years, twenty-six
for two years, and fifty varieties for one of these years. In 1970 and 1971
trials also were planted at Homestead but were not harvested in 1970 primarily
because of extensive bird damage.

These trials were a part of the state-wide Sorghum Variety Performance
Trials for Florida.


EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

In 1969 and 1970 the grain sorghum trials were conducted by Dr. V.E. Green,
Jr. They were planted at 10 Ib seed per acre in 36 inch rows on prepared Ever-
glades peat soil with good residual fertility. In 1971 the grain sorghum variety
trials were planted at both Belle Glade and Homestead under the direction of the
author. At Homestead on Rockdale type soil, 40 varieties were planted late in
March in cooperation with a commercial grower and the Dade County Extension
Service at approximately 15 lb seed per acre in 3 foot rows. At Belle Glade 46
varieties were seeded in mid-April into a Bermudagrass sod with a Grassland Drill
at 18 Ib seed per acre in 16 inch rows. In 1972 and 1973 the same seed rate and
row space was used as in 1971, but half of each trial was planted in prepared
ground and half was seeded in Bermudagrass sod.


RESULTS

The number of varieties in the trials, the range of yields, and the average
yields for the years grown at Belle Glade, Homestead and the combined north
Florida locations are shown in Table 1.

The great variation in range of low to high yields at Belle Glade as shown
in Table 1 can be attributed to bird damage. In all years the upper half of
the yield range consisted almost entirely of bird-resistant types, while the
lower half was almost completely non-bird-resistant.

The great differences in yield from year to year for the best varieties at
Belle Glade as shown in Table 1 can be :attributed primarily to weather conditions
during the pollination period. In 1969 and again in 1973 very few seeds were
set even though vegetative growth was good. In 1971 exceptionally dry weather
after planting and during the spring growing season caused some thinning of
stand, especially at Homestead, and heading was delayed at Belle Glade a week to
ten days later than in the two previous years. However, this dry weather was
favorable to pollination as shown by the fact that this was the best year at
Belle Glade with 5 varieties yeilding over 4000 lb/A, the only year that this
yield plateau was reached at this location.

The north Florida results shown in Table 1 indicate a much higher and more
consistent yield-than at Belle Glade. In 1969 and 1973 when the highest yields
at Belle Glade were only 880 and 400 lb/A, north Florida highs were 5030 and
5780 lb/A and averages were 4190 and 4750 Ib/A, respectively for these years.
In 1971 when the highest yield of the five year period at Belle Glade was 4800
lb/A, north Florida also had the highest yield recorded at 6550 Ib/A, and the
highest average at 5400 Ib/A. Overall, the north Florida high yields had an
approximate 2.4 to 1 advantage over the high yields at Belle Glade.









In the sod-seeding compared to planting in plowed and harrowed ground phase
of these trials, yields were generally slightly higher on prepared ground but
the weed problem was much greater. If a second or ratoon crop was attempted,
the advantage was usually with the sod-seeded replicates.

A complete listing of the brands, the varieties, and the yields for each
year are shown in Table 2. Also shown are the average yields of each variety
for the years grown at Belle Glade compared to the overall average yields of
the same varieties grown at the three north Florida locations. Other information
concerning these trials, such as days to heading, disease ratings, plait height,
bird damage, extent of lodging, and more detailed reports on sod-seeding compared
to planting in prepared ground, can be found in the state-wide reports listed
at the end of this summary.


SUMMARY

One hundred and one varieties of grain sorghum have been tested at Belle
Glade during the five year period of 1969 through 1973. Seven of these of these
varieties were tested all five years, ten for four years, eight for three years,
twenty-six for two years, and fifty varieties for one of these years.: The results
of these trials clearly indicate that grain sorghum is not well adapted to the
Everglades agricultural area climate. Grain sorghum trials have been dropped at
this station and the growing of sorghum for grain is not recommended.
