HORTICULTURAL TRIALS WITH CELERY VARIETIES
Spring and Fall, 1959

Weather conditions.- During the past years most of the variety trials were
carried out during the winter months; thus, records on performance of var-
ieties under South Florida winter conditions were adequate. The tests
reported here were intended for variety evaluation during the hot, rainy
weather which prevails in most of our fall and spring months. Both tests
were conducted under adverse weather conditions, especially thetone carried
out during the fall. Table 1 indicates the average temperatures prevailing
and the amount of rainfall during the test. The spring test was conducted
under relatively good weather conditions. Temperatures were high, but
rainfall was not excessive. In the fall trial, high temperatures and heavy
rainfall occurred from the beginning of the experiment and represented
severe adverse weather conditions for the growing of the celery crop. In
addition to the inclement weather, diseases and insects were difficult to
control, because of the washing action of the pesticides by the rain and
rapid dissemination of blight under optimum temperatures and humidity.

JLocation-Planting and Harvesting Dates.- Horticulture Experiment No. 403-C
was grown on Evans and Rogers Farm, field 7-W-G, South Bay. Seedbeds were
sown December 1, 1958. Plants were set in the field March 5 and harvested
June 1, 1959. Mean temperature for this period was slightly above 70oF and
rainfall was over 16 inches; thus, the experiment was conducted under re-
latively warm climate and medium to heavy rainfall.

Horticulture Experiment No. 417 was grown on the farm of C. A. Thomas,
South Bay, field 3W-3rd South. Seedbeds were sown May 20, 1959. Plants
were set in the field August 27 and harvested November 30, 1959. Mean
temperature was 760F and rainfall 29 inches. This experiment was carried
out under warm and heavy rainfall conditions.

How the Trials Were Conducted.- In each experiment, there were two types of
trials: the "observational", where a single row 35 feet long was used for
preliminary studies and the "replicated", where the varieties which exhit
bited the best possibilities in past observational trials were compared in
replicated experiments.

In the replicated trials randomized block design with six re _ckll N
was employed. Plots 35 feet long with plants spaced 7.5 and 6. lces h
the row and 2 and 2.33 feet between rows were used for experim 403-C V, \
and 417 respectively. A thirty foot row was harvested contain 51, plu.gf
or minus 2 plants, for both the observational and replicated

The rainfall and temperature data were taken at the Everglades Station.
Although wide differences could exist in total amount of rainfall between the
Station and the experimental fields, it seemed that only slightly more rain
fell in the experimental fields, especially during the fall growing season.


Cultural. Amount, type and time of application of fertilizer was done by the
grower cooperator and appeared to be adequate in amount and formula for the
celery crop. For the control of diseases, Naban plus zinc sulphate or Dyrene
were the standard fungicides with copper alternating every two to three weeks.
Insects were controlled with toxaphene and parathion. Weeds were controlled
by mechanical means in Experiment 403-C. In Experiment 417 Vegadex was applied
as post-transplanting treatment at the rate of 4 pounds/A. Since the two
experiments were conducted during most of the hot rainy season, the control
of diseases, particularly in Experiment 417, was only moderate.

In Experiment 417, the same varieties and accession numbers were used,
except that variety 10 was Emerald from Ferry Morse and variety 11 was Emerald
from Asgrow Seed Company. In addition, two more varieties were included in
the observational trials: 25, a new selection of Green Light fror J. H.
Harris Seed Co., and 26, a new selection of 52-70 from Abbott and Cobb.

Results

Data for the replicated experiments are presented in Tables 2 and 3, for
the observational trials in Table 4.

Explanation of Headings in the Tables.- Sources. Institution supplying the

Plant Height.- This was obtained by measuring the height in inches of fifteen
plants per replication and variety, from ground level to the highest leaf
before cutting.

Length of petiole from base to first node.- Petiole length was obtained by
measuring in inches the distance from the base to the first node of one
petiole of 15 plants selected at random per replication and variety.

Width of petiole midway between base and first node.- These data were taken
in centimeters. The same number and petioles used for measurement of length
of petiole were employed for width studies.

Number of petioles after commercial trimming.- These data were obtained by
counting the total number of petioles (separating them with the fingers,
without breaking the sta3l) of 15 plants taken at random. No effort was
made to count the very small ones in the heart of the plants.

Total untrimmed fresh weight.- This refers to total weight in pounds of all
the celery stalks before cleaning, stripping and topping.

Trimmed fresh weight.- This is the weight in pounds of all celery stalks
after cleaning, stripping and topping.

Crates per acre, estimated yield.- Plants were graded into plant size, from
1 or 2 to 6-8 dozen per crate as commercially done. From the number ob-
tained of each grade, total crates per acre were calculated.

Pithiness at the base of the petiole.- The data were obtained by counting
in each replication and variety the number of pithy petioles in 15 sele4Ce
plants at random. Pithiness is the breakdown of thin walled cells in the
parenchyma which leaves hollow places in the petiole.

Pencil stripe or celery "rust".- The data were obtained by examining 15
selected plants at random per plot and variety and recording the number of
affected petioles. Pencil stripe appears as longitudinal brown striping
of the petioles. Generally it affects the heart petioles first. The
lesions are usually small and sometimes rusty looking, therefore the name
given by some growers of "rust". In most cases the very small stripings
are transversal to the stalk and the union of many of them gives the long*
tudinal appearance. It is a very serious disorder, ruining the Market-
ability of the product when severe.

Cracked stem.- The number of cracked stems of 15 plants per variety and
replication was recorded. The main symptom of this disorder is transverse
outward peeling of the epidermis and adjoining tissue, which becomes brown.
It appears mostly at the node of the petiole. Varietal differences to
cracking are very striking.

Number of feather leaf.- These data were obtained by counting the number of
leaves showing discoloration of the leaf blade of 15 plants selected at ran-
dom per variety and replication.

Incidence of early blight.- Each variety was rated for early blight lesions
from 0 to 5 under sprayed and unsprayed conditions, in cooperation with
E. A. Wolf (zero, no disease; five, very severe incidence of the disease
or a dead plant).


Experiment 417, carried out during the fall of 1959, received approxi-
mately twice the rainfall (slightly more than 29 inches) than experiment
403-C. Under moderate rainfall, and with good cultural practices and ade-
quate insect and disease control, the Utah types of celery are as good or
better than the Summer Pascal types, such as 259-19, 375 and 137-D5 and
as good as the Everglades line.: such as Emerald. Under heavy rainfall,
the Utah types in general produced a sharper decrease in yields than the
Summer Pascal 259-19 and 375, but the yields in terms of crates per acre
were still as good or better (Green Light vs. 259-19) than the Summer
Pascals and one of the Emerald selections. "Green Light", a Utah type
celery, under heavy rainfall conditions seems to outyield 52-70, 135-C1
(Compak 1) and 143-D2 (Compak 2). It should be pointed out that the
appearance of Green Light is inferior to that of 52-70 and Compak 1 and
2, but will produce larger size plants under relatively adverse growing
conditions.

The Everglades lines seem to offer some advantage when bacterial
blight is not present, and are definitely cheaper varieties to raise,
since spraying for early blight control could be curtailed materially
as compared with the Utah types. However, during the spring test, the
148 line tended to present severe stem cracking, and during the fall
"Emerald" showed more pithiness in amount and severity than usually is
expected in thids.variety'.' To decrease cracking of the stem, boron
in the fertilizer and especially in the spray should be used.

In the observational trials, the new selections of Green Light and
XP22 seem promising for yields and appearance.
