HORTICULTURAL TRIALS WITH CELERY VARIETIES
1958 1959 season

Weather conditions. Temperatures during the fall growing season were relatively
high (Means: 73, 73 and 65 F for October, November and December 1958, respect-
ively). Except for October, with 5.18 inches of rain, there were no heavy rains
until December which fell mostly during the first seven days of the month. The
rain and high temperatures during October and December were conducive to a
severe incidence of early .blight which in turn caused yield reduction. During
1959, January had the coldest weather, with several days of freezing tempera-
tures which resulted in slight damage to the celery crop. Temperatures for the
rest of the season were above normal. February was dry and January intermediate,
April had somewhat more rain and March and May were the wettest months of the
season, with 6.37 inches and 7.53 inches respectively.

Location. Planting and Harvesting Dates. Horticulture experiment No. 403-A
was grown on the farm of A. Duda and Sons, field 12E. Seed was sown on the beds
July 2, 1958. Plants were set in the field October 21, 1958. The experiment
was harvested January 26, 27 and 28, 1959, 97 days after setting the plants in
the field. There was more rain on this farm during October, December and part
of January than elsewhere.

Horticulture experiment No. 403-B was grown on Wedgworth Farm, field 9,
West Farm No. 5. Seed was sown on the beds September 12, 1958. Plants were
set in the field December, 1958 and harvested March 9, 10 and 11, 1959, 98
days from setting plants in the field.

How the Trials were Conducted. There were two type of trials: the obser-
vational where a single row 35 feet long was used for preliminary studies and
the "replicated" where the varieties which exhibited the best possibilities in
past observational trials were compared in replicated experiments.

Plots 35 feet long with plants spaced 7 inches in the row and 2 and 2.33
feet between rows were used for experiment 403A and 403B, respectively. A
thirty foot row was harvested containing 51, plus or minus 2 plants. For the
replicated trials, randomized blocks with six replications were employed.

Cultural. Amount, type and time of application of fertilizer was done by the
grower cooperator and seemed to be adequate for good growth of the crop. Dis-
eases and insects were controlled by the individual grower-cooperator accor..::..
to his usual practice. Naban plus zinc sulphate was the standard fungicide wi;h
copper alternating every two weeks. Insects were controlled wN4fL toxaphene

Results

Data for the replicated experiments are presented in Tables 1 and 2, for
the observational trials in Table 3.

Explanation of Headings in the Tables.- Soirces. Institution supplying the

Plant Height. This was obtained by measuring the height in inches of fifteen
plants per replication and variety, from ground level to the highest leaf before
cutting.

Length of petiole from base to first node. Petiole length was obtained by
measuring in inches the distance from the base to the first node of one petiole
of 15 plants selected at random per replication and variety.

Width of petiole midway between base and first node.- These data were taken in
centimeters. The same number and petioles used for measurement of length of
petiole were employed for width studies.

Number of petioles after commercial trimming. These data were obtained by
counting the total number of petioles (separating them with the fingers, with-
out breaking the stalk) of 15 plants taken at random. No effort was made to
count the very small ones in the heart of the plants.

Total untrimmed fresh weight.- This refers to total weight in pounds of all
the celery stalks before cleaning, stripping and topping.

Trimmed fresh weight.- This is the weight in pounds of all celery stalks after
cleaning stripping and topping.

Crates per acre, estimated yield.- Plants were graded into plant size, from
lf or 2 to 6-6 dozen per crate as commercially done. From the number obtained
of each grade, total crates per acre were calculated.

Pithiness at the base of the petiole.- Pithiness is the breakdown of thin walled
cells in the parenchyma which leaves hollow places in the petiole. The data were
obtained by counting in each replication and variety the number of pithy pet-
ioles in 15 selected plants at random.

Pencil stripe or celery "rust".- This appears as longitudinal brown striping
of the petioles. Generally it appears in the heart petioles first, The lesions
are usually small and sometimes rusty looking, therefore the name given by some
growers of "rust". In most cases the very small stripings are transversal to
the stalk and a reunion of many of them together gives the longitudinal appear-
ance. It is a very serious disorder, ruining the marketability of the product









when it is severe. The data were obtained by examining 15 selected plants at
random per plot and variety and recording the number of affected petioles.

Cracked stem.- The main symptom of this disorder is transverse outward peeling
of the epidermis and adjoining tissue, which becomes brown. It appears mostly
at the node of the petiole. Varietal differences to cracking are very striking.
The number of cracked stems of 15 plants per variety and replication were re-
corded.

Number of feather leaf.- These data were obtained by counting the number of
leaves showing discoloration of the leafblade of 15 plants selected at random
per variety and replication.

Incidence of early blight.- Each variety was rated for leaf lesions from 0 to
5 in unsprayed plants by E. A. Wolf. (zero, no disease; five, very severe in-
cidence of the disease or a dead plant).


No celery variety was found with the combinations of all desirable charac-
teristics. Probably the tall Utah types are the most satisfactory for winter
harvest. Utah 135-C1 (compak No. 1) because it is less susceptible to blight
may be tried for late fall or early winter harvest, followed by 52-70. Compak
No. 1 is also less susceptible to bolting than 52-70, therefore should be tried
for May harvest. Green Light and 16-11 Utah type celeries should be tried on
a small scale for winter harvest. These varieties are heavy yielders but their
appearance is less attractive than the tall Utah types. Variety 16-11 showed
in some trials a very severe manganese and magnesium deficiency. EES 148
(Emerald) in these tests appeared to be more adapted to November and early
December and late spring harvest.

Of the 13 varieties or lines compared in the observational trials, XP22
and XP15, Utah 70K and Utah 187A seem to be promising; however before they are
elevated to the replicated trials more testing is necessary.
