Introduction
Vegetable crops were planted on 175,769 hectares during the 1978-79
Florida crop season valued at $758,431,000. Statistical information for
weed control costs is not available but has been estimated to range from $8
to $81 per hectare.
The total effect of weeds on vegetable crop production has not been
measured. However, weeds compete for space, light, moisture and nutrients
and if uncontrolled reduce crop yield and quality and increase the cost of
harvesting. Secondary effects of weed damage on crops are often unrecognized.
Weed root exudates or leachates and weed residue can affect crop growth.
Weeds are also hosts for diseases, insects, nematodes and viruses attacking
vegetable crops. A common figure for annual losses due to weeds in agri-
cultural production is 10 percent.
For many vegetable crops, the Florida grower is limited to the use
of either scarce, expensive manual labor or mechanical cultivation for weed
control. Chemical methods have been outlined and are utilized by growers,
however, effective utilization of these herbicides is limited by crop and
soil diversity. Few chemicals were available and even fewer are now
available with the recent withdrawal of a number of the most widely used
herbicides used in Florida.
In an effort to provide Florida's vegetable industry with chemical
compounds that provide adequate control of weeds, and because of the lack of
new compounds available for evaluation, a number of "old" compounds are
being evaluated that might be labeled for use on Florida vegetables as are

any new compounds that are available.
A number of herbicide evaluation trials were conducted during 1980-81
on a variety of crops. The results are included in this report. Each trial
has been reported separately. At the beginning of each section background
information for each experiment is given as are the treatments and weed







species present. All experimental designs were randomized complete blocks
with three replications unless otherwise indicated. A number of rating

systems for weed control and phytotoxicity were used and are summarized for
each experiment.
Results presented include weed control and phytotoxicity ratings at
various dates as well as yield data when taken. Application dates are also
given so days after treatment can be determined. All values with the same
letter are not significantly different at the .05 level by Duncan's multiple
range test. When possible weed control ratings were made for both broad-leaf
and grass weed species. A short summary is given for each trial with sug-
gestions for further experimentation.
A list of the chemicals used, as well as their common names and manu-

facturers are listed in Appendix I. Because most herbicides are affected by
existing environmental conditions weather data is included in Appendix II.
This data was compiled by Dr. R. J. Allen, Associate Professor, AREC, Belle
Glade, FL.

Summary
Kerb at all rates provided 80 to 100 percent control 13 days after
treatment (DAT). Kerb at 5.0 and 8.0 lb ai/A still provided between 70 and
80% control 21 DAT. Kerb applied as a preemergence treatment followed by a
postemergence treatment did not enhance control. Lasso provided excellent

control for 21 days, however, it was phytotoxic at all rates. Lorox pro-
vided control similar to Kerb but was phytotoxic. Lorox applied preemergence
followed by a postemergence treatment enhanced control but was phytotoxic.
CIPC at 4.0 and 8.0 lb ai/A provided good control of grasses for 21 days.
Ramrod and Prowl provided good control of broad-leaf and grass weeds for 21
days but were phytoxic to the leaf crops. Dual provided excellent control
at 3.0 lb ai/A for 21 days and was only slightly phytotoxic. Dual at 4.0
lb ai/A provided excellent control but was phytotoxic to the crops. Vegadex
at 4.0 lb ai/A provided excellent control for 21 days and was not phytoxic.

Kerb and Dual should be examined further for weed control in leaf crops.

Summary
Weed pressure in this trial was due strictly to broadleaf weeds ap-

pearing later in the growing period and consequently weed evaluations were

made only once. Hoelon, BAS-9052 and R013-8895 are grass herbicides but
were still applied in order to make phytotoxicity ratings. Vegadex, Goal,
Kerb and CIPC all provided excellent control, however, CIPC was slightly
phytotoxic and Goal was extremely phytotoxic. All the grass herbicides
were slightly phytotoxic but did not affect quality at harvest time. All

the grass herbicides and Kerb should be examined further.

Summary
Kerb provided 70 to 80% control of both broadleaf and grass weeds 15
DAT when applied early postemergence to the weeds and was only slightly

phytotoxic. Lasso provided only poor control at low rates and 70 to 90%

control of both broadleaf and grass weeds at the highest rate but was

phytotoxic. Lorox provided excellent control of broadleaf weeds but was
highly phytoxic. BAS-9052, R013-8895 and Hoelon provided 90 to 100%

control of grass weeds and were only slightly phytotoxic. Kerb and the
grass herbicides, BAS-9052, R013-8895 and Hoelon should be examined
further.

before or after seeding as a preemergence treatment. It provided very
little control if applied as a postemergence treatment to weeds. Basagran,
RH-0043, and RH-0265 all provided excellent control of broadleaf weeds,

however, they were extremely phytotoxic resulting in loss of stands.
Caparol did not provide consistent results. BAS-9052, R013-8895 and KK-80
all provided excellent control of goose grass (>87%), with few or no indi-
cations of phytotoxicity. KK-80 is no longer available for experimental

purposes. BAS-9052 and R013-8895 should be examined further.

Summary
All the compounds tested, BAS-9052, R013-8895, KK-80 and the two formu-
lations of Hoelon, provided 90 to 100% control of goosegrass, the primary
grass species, whether applied as an early or late postemergence treatment.
Only the standard treatments of Vegadex and Caparol provided adequate control
of broadleaf weeds, except the Hoelon formulations, however, these results
were inconsistent. Caparol used as a late postemergence treatment was phy-
totoxic. BAS-9052, R013-8395 and KK-80 were slightly phytotoxic. General-
ly, phytotoxicity was reduced when the compounds were used as a late
postemergence treatment. Hoelon 1 was only slightly phytotoxic at low rates
but phytotoxicity did increase with rates. Hoelon 2 was severely phytotoxic.
All the compounds should be examined further.

Summary

The plots were infested with goosegrass and crabgrass for the most
part. A few broadleaf weeds emerged later on in the growing season.. Weed
control ratings were not made after the 15th of January because the freezing
weather had killed the weeds. Lorox provided 70 to 80% control of the
grasses and excellent control of broadleaf weeds. Vegadex provided about the

same control as Lorox but was less phytotoxic. Blazer provided excellent
control of broadleaf weeds and less than adequate control of the grass species.
It was also phytotoxic. Goal provided excellent control of all weed species
but it too was phytotoxic. However, the celery did grow out of the phyto-

toxicity and the yields at the low rates were not significantly different
from the checks. All the grass herbicides, Hoelon, BAS-9052, and R013-8895,
provided excellent grass control with little or no phytotoxicity. All the
grass herbicides and Goal should be further evaluated.

Summary
These trials were conducted very late in the season and it was diffi-
cult to evaluate phytotoxicity of the compounds. However, no visible signs
of phytotoxicity were observed. All compounds provided greater than 90%
weed control 14 DAT except Prowl and Dual at the low rate. Thirty DAT Prowl
(2.0 lb ai/A), Dual (3.0 lb ai/A), Vegadex (4.0 lb ai/A), Ramrod (4.0 lb ai/a
ai/A),Caparol (1.5 lb ai/A), Bolero (4.0 lb ai/A) and Goal (0.5 lb ai/A)
still gave greater than 85% weed control. Forty-five DAT these compounds
still provided between 73 and 97% control of broadleaf weeds and 78 to 95%
control of grass weed species. Kerb provided excellent control for 30 days
but'this control dropped drastically in the next two weeks. All these com-
pounds should be examined further.

Summary
This trial was conducted during the winter season and very few weeds
were present, consequently, no evaluations as to weed control were made.
All the compounds were phytotoxic. However, Vegadex (2.6 lb ai/A) applied
as a preemergence treatment to both the crops and the weeds and Vegadex (2.0
lb ai/A), BAS-9052 and R013-8895 applied as postemergence treatment were
only slightly phytotoxic. Only BAS-9052 applied to the variety Red Devil
provided yields that were not significantly reduced from the checks.
BAS-9052 and R013-8895 should be further evaluated especially with respect
to varietal differences in phytotoxicity.

Herbicide Trials in Radishes II


Summary

Only broadleaf weed control ratings were made because the plots had no
grass weeds present. All the compounds provided greater than 77% weed con-
trol 10 DAT. Only Dual at both rates and Ramrod and Sonalan at the lowest
rate provided less than 70% weed control 17 DAT. At harvest, Prowl and
Sonalan still provided more than 70% weed control. None of the compounds,
except Kerb at 5.0 lb ai/A, were more than slightly phytotoxic to the crop.
There were no significant reductions in yield due to treatments except Kerb
and Prowl at the highest rate.
