PRESS RELEASE
COMMEMORAfION OF MEMBERS OF
HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES WHO FELL
IN THE 1939/1945 WAR.
PROPOSALS for the Commemoration of
those members of His Majesty's Forces
who fell in the 1939/1945 war and who
have no known grave are announced by
the Imperial War Graves Commission after
consultation with the Governments of the
British Commonwealth The Chief Naval
Memorials will be in this country linked
with the memorials of the 1914/1918 war
at Catham Plymouth and Portsmouth and
there will be three smaller memorials at
Lee-on-Solent, Liverpool and Lowestoft.
The commemoration of the armies will
be by Campaigns and most of the memo.
rials will be in War cemeteries. In
Europe the sites chosen are Trondheim in
Norway, Dunkirk and Bayeux in France,
Nijmigen in Holland, Cassion in Italy and
Athens in Greece. The Principal memo-
rial in Africa will be at El Alamein. Others
will be at Madjex-el-Bab Hargeisa Port
Sudan Mombasa and Diego Suarez. In
Asia there will be memorials at two ceme-
teries in Iraq and Persia at Beirut at Sin-
gapore and at Saiwan Bay, Hongkong.
The sites for the memorials for the cam-
paigns in Burma and for the Defence of
India have not yet been chosen. The
largest memorial to the forces will be at
Coopers Hill overlooking Runnymede
bearing the names of all those lost during
operations from bases in the United King-
dom and North West Europe. Others will
be in Malta at El Alamein at Singapore

and in Canada. In the South and South
West Pacific eight memorials will com-
memorate together those of the land and
air forces and merchant navies of Austra-
lia and New Zealand. The form and site
of the main memorial to the merchant
navies remain to be settled.

THE Secretary of State for the Colonies
has appointed Mr. G.F. Seel, C M.G.,
Assistant Under Secretary of State, Colon-
ial Office, to be (omptroller, Development
and Welfare, West Indies, and British Co-
Chairman, Caribbean, Commission, in suc-
cession to Major General Sir Hubert
Rance, G.C.M.G., G.B E., C B E. His
Majesty the King is pleased to approve
the promotion of Mr. G.F. Seel to be a
Knight Commander cf the Most Distin-
quished Order of St. Michael and St.
George. Mr. Seel will take up his duties
in April.
Mr. George Frederick Seel was born in
October 1895 and educated at King's
School MACCLESFIELD, and CORPUS
CHRISTI College. Oxford. He served in
the Cheshire Regiment during the Great
War in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine and
in 1922 was appointed an Assistant Princi-
pal in the Air Ministry. He was trans-
ferred to the Colonial Office in 1922 and
in 1929 was Private Secretary to the Par-
liamentary Under Secretary of State for
the Colonies. (Mr. William LUNN).
Mr. Seel was promoted as Principal the
same year and in 1939 became an Acting
Assistant Secretary. He was seconded to
the Ministry of Information at the out-
break of the last war and to the Ministry
of Supply from 1911 to 1942. He was
promoted to be Superintending Assistant

Secretary at the Colonial Office in 1946
and in July of that year became an Assist-
ant Under Secretary of State. Mr Seel
was Secretary of the Rhodesian-Nyasa-
land Royal Commission of 1938-39.
