ROAD TRAFFIC AUTHORITY
Owners and drivers of all motor vehicles (except drivers who
purchased licences after May 1st, 1959) are reminded that their
licences and the licences of their vehicles expire on December
31st, 1959.
Commencing December 1st, 1959, The Road Traffic Authority
will inspect and licence vehicles and issue drivers licences for
the year 1960, at their offices on Fort Charlotte Grounds.
Vehicles will be inspected on the inspection grounds, Fort
Charlotte from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Fridays
and from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays. The office of the
Road Traffic Authority will be opened from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. Monday through Fridays and from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon on
Saturday.
To avoid waste of time and inconvenience resulting from
having their vehicles rejected, owners are advised to have them
checked before bringing them in for inspection. See that the
vehicle and all its fittings are in proper working condition, paying
particular attention to brakes and lights; the latter must be in
good focus and deflect downwards and to the left when dimmed.
To obtain a licence you will be required to produce:-

(a) 1959 licence.
(b) Certificate of Inspection.
(c) Certificate of Insurance.
(d) Motor Vehicle Registration Cards.
If needed, duplicate Registration Cards can now be obtained
from the Road Traffic Office.
THIRD PARTY INSURANCE
No vehicle will be licensed for 1960 unless it is covered by
Insurance (Third Party Risks) as is required by the Road Traffic
Act 1958.
The owner of a vehicle applying for a licence will be re-
quired to produce a certificate of Insurance. This Certificate
will be issued by The Authorized Insurance Company writing the
Policy.
Owners of vehicles already insured should apply to their
Insurance Agents for a Certificate of Insurance for each vehicle
insured.
PUBLIC SERVICE VEHICLES
Owners of Public Service vehicles (Tour Car, Taxi-cabs,
Self Drive, Livery, Bus) wishing to renew their Public Service
Vehicle licences for 1960 are required to produce their vehicles
to the Controller during the month of December within the in-
spection hours.

On the occasion of the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph
on the Library Green on SUNDAY, 8th NOVEMBER, 1959, the
following traffic arrangements will be made.
1. PARLIAMENT STREET between BAY STREET and
SHIRLEY STREET will be CLOSED TO ALL
TRAFFIC and PARKING will be prohibited from 11:45
a.m., until the end of the ceremony at approximately
12:45 p.m.
2. BANK LANE will be closed to THROUGH TRAFFIC
and will be utilised for the parking of vehicles of Officials
and others attending the ceremony.
Members of the Public not taking any official part, but who
wish to attend the ceremony are requested, if they use their cars,
to park them as far along Bay Street and other authorised park-
ing sites as possible and proceed to the Library Green on foot,
as the parking space in the vicinity of the Library Green is
strictly limited.
There will be no restriction on traffic proceeding East along
Shirley Street EXCEPT that traffic in the vicinity of the Library
Green will be held up during the Two Minutes Silence which
forms part of the ceremony and drivers of motor vehicles are
requested to switch off their engines if so held up.
The co-operation of all drivers of motor vehicles is requested
to avoid, as far as possible, driving along Shirley Street in this
vicinity during the service.

COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP
PLAN
Under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
the United Kingdom offers for immediate competition up to 250
Scholarships tenable in the United Kingdom from the beginning
of the academic year in October, 1960. The Bahamas have been
allotted one, or perhaps two of these scholarships.
Scholarships are for two years, but in certain cases one or
three year courses may be considered. They are primarily for
postgraduate study, but may also be held for undergraduate study.
Scholarships are open to men and women under 35 and pre-
ferably between 22 and 28 years of age. Candidates must be
normally resident in the Bahamas.
Further information and forms of application may be ob-
tained from the undersigned with whom a personal interview
should be arranged by telephone (No. 2878). No enquiries by
post, except from Out Islands, will be considered. Applications
will close on 30th November, 1959.

RECRUITS WANTED
THE BAHAMAS PRISON SERVICE
Applications are invited from those who wish to enlist as
Overseers in the Bahamas Prison Service.
Pay and conditions of service are attractive with the security
of a pension after 21 years service.

Minimum requirements are:-
British subject by birth.
Age 21 to 30 years.
Education Not less than Grade VI Standard.
Height 5'9" in bare feet.
Chest Not less than 36 inches (expanded).
PAY
General Duty Overseers 590 x 30 720 plus 2%% of
salary as a temporary allowance.
Normal working hours approximately 100 per fortnight.
Overseers shall be appointed for 3 years and may re-engage
for further successive periods of 3 years. During the first 6 months
an Overseer shall be on probation.
Free uniform and medical attention are provided and there
is an annual vacation leave of 21-28 days, according to grade, on
full pay. There are free quarters for a limited number of men.
Housing allowance for those who do not enjoy free quarters, is
granted at the following rates:-
General Duty Overseers Unmarried ..... 24 p.a.
General Duty Overseers Married ....... 48 p.a.
Applicants shall be required to sit for an educational examin-
ation, both written and oral, and be passed as physically fit by
the Prison Medical Officer.

Made Under
THE ROAD TRAFFIC ACT 1958.
In exercise of the powers conferred upon them by the Road
Traffic Act, 1958 the Road Traffic Authority with the approval
of the Governor in Council hereby make the following Regula-
tions:

1. These Regulations may be cited as The Motor Vehicles
Insurance (Third Party Risks) Amendment Regulations, 1959.
2. The Schedule to The Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third
Party Risks) Regulations, 1959 is hereby repealed and replaced
by the following:
"Rule 3 SCHEDULE
FORM A.
The Road Traffic Act 1958 and
The Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party Risks)
Regulations 1959.
